Broken by Him

A Dark Sci-Fi Romance

Grabbed off the street, locked in a cell, and falsely accused of a terrible crime, Tara thought they had taken everything they could from her. But she was wrong. Terribly wrong.

They plan to take her modesty, her dignity, and her free will itself. They intend to break her.

Breaking women is Doctor Mark Kilroy's job and he does it well. Tara will be stripped bare, thoroughly humiliated, and punished harshly for the slightest hint of disobedience. Her body will be pushed to its limits with pleasure so shameful and intense it will shatter her ability to resist his demands. When Mark is finished, he will not need to force himself on her. She will beg for it.

But Tara is not like any other woman Mark has broken. Even as her body surrenders to his mastery, her mind refuses to yield. Worse still, he finds himself yearning to cast aside protocol, abandon his duty, and claim her for himself. When the time comes for him to complete his task and put Tara's conditioning to the test, will her defiance end in catastrophe for them both?

Publisher's Note: Broken by Him includes spankings and sexual scenes. If such material offends you, please don't buy this book.

Intelligent Erotica

I’m a huge fan of dystopian romance and I thoroughly enjoyed “Broken by Him”. I believe what made the story resonate so well with me are the elements presented that exist within society today. Anytime a fictional story effectively delivers plausible or truly possible concepts, it has my full attention. “Broken by Him” certainly conveys a feeling of the “here and now” which makes the reader pause to contemplate “what if?”. Beyond the backdrop, the story is thoroughly engaging, fast paced, intriguing and professionally written. The characterizations are quite complex given the story length and the intrigue as well as the plot twist, very well done. Loki Renard has an incredible talent with words and is immensely creative. Her stories are woven in such a way that readers easily develop vivid mental images providing complete narrative immersion. The intimate scenes are also incredibly well done, flow with the story-line and are exceptionally steamy. “Broken by Him” is such an imaginative, well written story with extraordinary characterizations, I would enjoy a sequel and I normally don’t read sequels or serialized novels. I consider Ms. Renard’s novels intelligent erotica but it is important to heed the publishers note, “Broken by Him” does contain scenes of domestic discipline.

Children 18 and over only due to sexual content and domestic discipline!

I was looking for something short dark and dirty.

This book met most of those expectations but not all. It wasn't really dark, there was some spankings. And I am not sure why it is classified as sci fi. Nothing about it was sci fi to me.

What really drew me in was the concept of the world this author created because of all the possible post apocalyptic worlds created, the one in this book is more likely.

Without giving too much away I will say this, in this future world the world is run by companies and average citizens are called consumers and they are paid by how many "friends" they have and theory have social media quotas they have to meet.

Very intriguing..

SHE WAS A PAWN IN HIS PLAN--SHE COULD SENSE THAT

I found this unique story to be a spell-binding, page-turning, and a dark and dirty psychological-thriller that will take place in a dystopian world that is controlled by a government that has taken away free-will from the people. People are mindless drones that have become so conditioned to propaganda; they don’t think for themselves. The brainwashing of this new Sugarhill government starts from the time you are born and is drilled into you everywhere you go, in everything you see and hear.

Tara Tanner will leave her family home and move to New York to attend college with the goal of getting an elusive government position. People no longer own property, are told how much of their pay must be spent back to support the economy, and unless you work for the government, you have little. Everyone is cookie-cutter replicas shaped into complacent sheeple.

“Faith in friends. Freedom in faith. Friends in freedom.”

Mark Kilroy is part of the resistance against the Sugarhill government and will be asked to accept Tara for reprogramming before she starts working for the government. The resistance brainwashes individuals and in doing so, can manipulate individuals to do their will by using keywords. The one thing that must be taking into account is to avoid an individual becoming disconnected.

“Disconnection meant having your social ID removed from all networks. You would not be able to share your short thoughts, you domestic pictures, your moments of video. You would not be unable to view the thoughts and images of others. You would be, to all intents and purposes, an un-person.”

The plot will have Tara snatched off the streets, and things don’t go as planned, causing issues, but things that Mark will attempt to use in his favor. The methods of retraining include punishment, humiliation, sensory deprivation, and keeping her on edge. It will also use sexual responses and have the subject begging for release. She will question him, and he will allow her thought to believe he is with the government since that is what she assumes.

“She was a pawn in his plan; she could sense that.” –Tara

“We’re working on compliance, obedience, and submission. Workers in the state system must master all these skills. –Mark

The story will take the reader through the various stages that Mark will use on Tara as he breaks her down to build her back up to the resistance standards.

“She held onto him as though she were clinging to a raft in a storm. He was the storm, but he was also her safety, her guide, and as his palm rained down on her bottom she held on, gasping and whimpering and crying out until finally the storm abated and there was a calm in which she was held tenderly, pulled against his chest and cradled tightly.”

Not everything works as planned and there are some unexpected surprises in the works. The story has explicit dominance/submissive scenes that include non-consensual and dubious consent, unequal power-exchange, punishment, humiliation, exhibition, the use of probes, anal, oral, medical play and more. Taking the subject to the point of no return and begging for release as part of the training.

"All she knew about him was that he was what to her. And to her, he was fast becoming the source of all things. All pleasure, all pain, all attachment.”

“He would be the oh so dominant to her not so submissive, and it was all she needed in the world.”

Loki Reanrd's latest is a dystopian romance that features a future government employee, Tara and a resistance fighter, Mark. This story had significant world building of a future where everything is controlled by the government from your thoughts to the food that you eat. Mark wants to "recondition" Tara in the hopes of creating a sleeper agent to aid the resistance fight. Of course, this reconditioning involves breaking her mind which can only be done sexually. There were loads of very steamy intense scenes throughout the story as Mark conducted his training. Really enjoyed this story, especially the twist at the end.

Loki Renard has created a spellbinding, erotic, dystopian story as timely as 1984, Brave New World, or The Handmaid's Tale!

In a not too distant future, life as we know it has disappeared. Individual freedom no longer exists. The government? Bought and paid for. Constant bombardment by government propaganda, nonstop mandatory social media interaction, technology recording every moment of every life are the norm. This is Tara Tanner's existence. Her ambition? To win a coveted government position, her only way to become one of the elite. For years, she's worked every angle, taken every chance. Her success is all but assured. But one reckless decision by a total stranger in a dark alley may destroy it all. Drugged and kidnapped, she awakens to a bizarre nightmare that's all too real. Confined in an anonymous cell, accused of the unthinkable, she comes face-to-face with a nameless, indifferent, gorgeous man. Dr. Mark Kilroy is the infamous "Marquis of Mayhem" of the underground resistance. Tara's totally unaware of his identity. She thinks this is all some loyalty test to prove her worth. She soon learns nothing could be farther from the truth. Mark has a cold-hearted, chilling agenda, and he intends to strip Tara of everything. Her life and memories may be left intact, but her body and soul lie in his very capable and unrelenting hands. Reprogramming her is paramount, and anything goes. Breaking her is Mark's sole objective, and he'll use any method at his disposal. But Mark's never had to contend with a subject like Tara. Something's off, missing. Mark doesn't have all the facts. And there's something about Tara, a magnetism, an irresistible pull, that draws him to her in ways he's never known. This is no game. Lives hang in the balance. He can't afford the slightest mistake. Is Mark slipping? Has he lost his touch? Or is Tara truly beyond his abilities to condition? Failure's not an option. As Tara and Mark reach a final showdown, both learn that nothing is as it seems. What's real? How much is lies? Can either escape unscathed? Can any of this work? One thing is certain. If Mark is wrong, both his and Tara's lives hang in the balance, and nothing will ever be the same!

Loki Renard is phenomenal. She's one of the very few authors who's an automatic buy for me. This book surprised me on so many levels. The premise is intriguing and, at times, hits far too close to reality for comfort. The characters are charismatic and beguiling. Tara seems a total innocent with only one goal. Get the coveted government job and help her parents. And Mark? His intentions are all too apparent. Break Tara, strip her of all that makes her unique, and remake her for the resistance's purposes. I loved the incredible interactions between Mark and Tara. Their chemistry is off-the-charts hot! But Ms. Renard has also woven layers upon layers of intrigue, hidden agendas, and unknown secrets into a tapestry of incredible depth. The truth is inextricably blended with so many lies that everything is in doubt. This is truly a masterful work that hooked me from the very beginning. Loki Renard has created a story that could be pulled from the headlines of today's news. That ability is incredibly rare. In my opinion, this is one of Loki Renard's best books. I want to give this book ten stars! It's just that fantastic. Congratulations, Ms. Renard, for giving us such a rich and captivating reading experience!

One final note. Be an informed reader! This is an ADULT book. It contains explicit language and sexual scenes. If you don't enjoy this genre, this may not be the book for you. There are book synopses and reviews available on Goodreads and all booksellers' websites. Use these resources. DON'T LEAVE A NEGATIVE REVIEW WHEN YOU KNOW YOU WON'T ENJOY THE BOOK. It's not fair to the author. She works very hard to provide a quality work product. If you know you'll object to the book's subject matter before you buy it, you're doing yourself and the author an extreme disservice.

Thanks for reading my review and happy reading

This is one Ms. Renard's dystopian books (well, I guess really they're all dystopian) set on a futuristic Earth where consumerism, capitalism, and big tech have taken over the world (uhm, did I say the "future?"). To infiltrate the government controlling all this, resistance leader Mark must program new government hire Tara so that she'll actually be working for them, even though she won't know it. As they bond over her "conditioning," the master manipulator never once catches on to Tara's big secret...

I had very mixed feelings about this book. On the one hand, Ms. Renard, as always, writes well-described kink scenes underpinned by some serious socio-political critique and featuring strong heroines. On the other, this is really a cabin romance and neither character is interesting enough to sustain that amount of the Forced Proximity trope. Indeed, given that Tara simply submits to everything he does to her, there's zero tension. The big twist towards the end could have provided necessary conflict, but at that point the book just ends.

Finally, though I always enjoy Ms. Renard's satire, I often feel that she doesn't see it through: interesting issues are raised, only to be either contradicted, underdeveloped, or forgotten. This means that we often get an incoherent worldview and that has happened here. The resistance's conditioning is no different from what the government does. And while Mark realizes that, he never challenges it. Since I saw no distinction between the rebels and the government, I rooted for neither side -- another reason why I felt no tension in this book.

3 stars. Middle-class white people depicting UBI as the slippery slope to hell makes me cranky; as do men making women feel guilty for defending themselves.

Wow, this was hot. But it also ticked me off, outraged me. And then I got happy towards the end. It has a twist at about 80 percent of the story that had me yelling "YES". I hate spoilers so that's all I'll say about it. I really hope Loki is planning a series for this, (begs pretty please with a cherry on top.)

Let’s start with the fact that, YEP we are all electronic junkies. We seem to forget to lift our heads up from our devices to look around us. That is what starts this change of events. Let’s start with our unknown “Shadow man” if you will. He is skilled at what he does. He is actually the one that came up with the technique for “reconditioning.” Did I mention he is also part of the Resistance?

Tara is a spit fire. She may have been blinded by the “electronic leash” but she was no fool. She was packing. Unfortunately, THAT is what changes things for her. Our “Sir” must train Tara. He breaks down some of the walls but things aren’t adding up. What he read in the file should be cut and dry but aren’t. I honestly had a feeling something was not quite right. Her life too neat. But he makes a mistake. And the story Tara tells should have popped the light bulb in his head. They do learn a great deal about one another. I would say this is more sensual then anything. And funny in a way. You have to read to see.

I don’t envy this world that is depicted in the book. It is cold and heartless; like what we are in now. Where our government seems to be just as this is written. But let us hope that this stays in the fictional world.

Wow. Tara Tanner, an innocent citizen in a regulated society with dreams of becoming
a part of the powers in control, finds herself suddenly attacked and enslaved. Tara must
do everything her trainer/conditioner orders her to do in exactly the way she is told. This
is part of her conditioning to obey without question or thought. Her trainer, Dr. Mark
Kilroy is the master trainer of the resistance and he is very good at what he does. Mark
is known as The Marquis of Mayhem for his brutally exacting process of conditioning
his trainees, and uses sex to drive their will to obey and to control them with denial of
what they desire if that is what's needed at any given time. Tara must be trained in order
for her to survive the direction she must go in, to live after her disasterous abduction.
I can't really say too much as the latter part of the story has a surprise in store for us
that you won't even see coming.
I definitely enjoyed the interaction between Tara and Mark, it was erotic and terrifying at times
but kept the sexy, hot experiences coming.

I love Loki Renard’s books and I was really excited to read this next offering from her. It was very well written and edited. The characters were fully fleshed out, the sex scenes very hot, and the world building was excellent.
I gave it only 4 stars mainly because I had trouble with how the storyline seemed a bit light. I was very confused about the story until the middle and the conclusion of the book. Although I loved the various plot twists and turns.

I also feel It might useful/good to put a Content Warning/Trigger Warning for consent-no consent, sexual assault, and mind-f*@kery/tampering somewhere in the blurb or introduction just letting people know.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and gave an honest review.

This book was great! I loved Tara she was so badass and sweet at the same time and Mark's history was so sad and cool at the same time. The book kind of reminded me of the Uglies series by Scott Westerfield except with sex. Just the whole futuristic everyone is the same type vibe. The mindfuck was interesting the world was cool, the sex was hot and the story was interesting. This was a really entertaining book to read and the ending was unexpected and kind of made me wish that there might potentially be a sequel. A very fun read.

A new book by Loki Renard which takes place in the not so distant future. Companies have taken over the government and the people are nothing more than consumers.. being in the government means you are set for life. Resistance is alive.

This is the world where Mark and Tara meet. The contact between the two of them is very intense. It is just them, two strong wills battling it out. Both have pasts which have shaped them. There is a lot of Fireworks but also tender moments. Tara made me laugh.

There are some surprising twists and turns.

I received this book from Stormy Night Publications as an advance review copy

Kidnapping Tara

An interesting story of conditioning and behavior modification, Tara is kidnapped by a group of rebellions against the government, President Sugarhill. Tara was completing school for employment by the government. She woke up in a grey, blank room without windows where she meets Mark, a trainer for the rebellion, who refuses to tell her his name and why she is there. He starts his agenda telling her to undress, redress, and undress again and again because she has not followed only what he tells her. He wants her to stop thinking for herself and only do what he tells her. Besides repetitive orders and is spanked. She is slowly stripped nude and subjected to several probe insertions into her vagina and anus, and giving him oral intercourse. She responds positively to her sexual manipulation by focusing on Sir, Marks name to her, and his touch which can be hypnotically pleasant or painful. She also relives earlier nightmares of childhood. She increasingly becomes very submissive to Sir and very sexually aroused, begging for intercourse with Sir. Her past life has been a rejection of submission. Mark deviates his agenda by having full sexual contact, vaginal and anal, which results in his being called to report to the rebellions general. Her training is completed and he takes her back to her apartment, but discovers her conditioning did not work. She joins the rebellion but refused to follow other trainers at the rebellion school. Mark returns, punishes her, and convinces the General to place her under him lead. Mark and Tara are in love and about to parachute with a group of rebellions soldiers attacking a government stronghold.

Manchurian Style Resistance

This is the second book I have read by this author and I must admit that I find her stories to be very intriguing. This story takes place in the future, after the world has been overtaken and is being run by five major corporate entities. Citizens are connected through their smartphones and are required to communicate regularly, in a variety of ways, to the government. The most prized positions are governmental. There is a resistance group that has figured a way to infiltrate the government by brainwashing and manipulating female governmental officials, causing them to become puppets of the resistance.

Mark Kilroy is a high echelon member of the resistance. He developed the program for the brainwashing and has since passed its implementation on to another person. The problem is that this other person was just killed while attempting to kidnap the newest subject, Tara Tanner. With Tara in their custody and time of the essence before the government notices she is missing, Mark is now required to implement the procedure on Tara.

I think this story addressed the flaw I found in the first book I read. The characters were very well developed relative to the storyline. It is clear that even a relatively short novel can be substantially fleshed out to be complete. Although I have to admit I'd have been more than happy to follow their story further.

This gets a good solid 4.5.

Loki Renard has given us an incredibly dystopian world that is fascinating to read. In this world, you have a country where corporations have taken over the country. You have to be everyone's friend, spend money, and spend plenty of time on social media. Everyone is monitored and you either work for the government or you are nothing.

Tara is bound and determined to get a job in the government. Her parents worked hard to save what money they could to send her to a good college. Tara has done everything that she possibly can to be good enough to be in the government. That all changes one day when she's kidnapped in broad daylight.

Mark is a member of the resistance. He has learned how to break and train people so that they are secret weapons. Usually, he does this to guilty or powerful people so that they can be useful. When Tara gets brought in, he's put into a position where he may have to train someone who is completely innocent of everything. His choice is to train her or have her brain wiped, which could really wipe out everything. He makes the choice to train her.

This book is so hot and fascinating. Loki has given us a story that both makes you feel and makes you think. There are some real twists and turns in here that I completely didn't expect. This is a yummy little dark treat.

This book was seriously weird! When I started it I was thinking to myself how is the considered Sci-fi? It's futuristic of course it set in 2080 something I think but what really got me was it's like the author took some ideas from that movie Jim Carrey starred in The Truman Show, what made me think that was when it was mentioned about the Sugarhill group watched people, listened through devices, so on so forth. I'm not saying it is a rip off but it just reminded me of that movie. Basically everyone in the future is a bunch of mindless zombies walking around with their phones in their faces 24-7 because that's what the world's about no longer are you judged by how much money you have, it's about what your social profile is like. When the girl gets snatched by the rebel group that tries to fight the Sugarhill group while she's sitting in the room she has to sit on her hands because her hands are automatically pecking at thin air where her mobile device should be, that tells you how bad they and I really and truly believe it could get that bad in our near future cause heck were bad enough as it is now. Anyways this book was really not worth the read the relationship if you can even call it that between her and Mark is bland and boring even their so called brainwashing sex therapy was snooze worthy I really don't recommend this one.

Different and still Great

This book has to be read intensively with attention to detail. The author makes many points on our current society and how our government has deteriorated. It is a story set after 2028. And our entire society almost, is brainwashed. Everyone is monitored by their phones and social media. You’re identified by a social id number which the government can deactivate and you will be unable to function normally. Speaking out against the leaders is strictly prohibited and illegal besides. Other people can rate your behavior which affects your social life and status. The resistance is composed of an intelligent few who recognize that the current way will not work and so they choose the ones to be deprogrammed. Tara was chosen to be broken and her handler was Mark. This was a great book. I enjoyed reading this throughly.

Tara or Brat

Tara was kidnapped and held in a small room. She was supposed to be getting ready for a government job. Mark was to train her and then program her. But they fell in love with each other. It was the first time to either of them. But when the time came, !ask convinced himself that he wasn't good enough for Tara. So, he took her back home, prepared to rave her behind. But he got the surprise of his life! But you will have to read the book to find out what and why he calls Tara "Brat"! This is definitely an Adult Only book. The warning for this book is absolutely true!

This book didn’t work for me though the beginning seemed somewhat interesting. The beginning sounded like a subversive article against Trump and also the current social media platforms. However I just couldn’t see why Mark, a very experienced trainer, would develop strong feelings for Tara. She is young and apparently quite innocent and I can see why the training, although it isn’t as severe as other training stories, would make her attached to him. Then Tara has her metamorphosis and it becomes less likely that she would fall for Mark. I couldn’t feel any real emotion developing during this story and that is why it fell flat for me.

Excellent story

This was imaginative, creative and fun. My only qualms with this book was the authors need to repeat herself. I loved Taras character she was funny and intelligent but also a loveable brat. Mark or "Sir" was strong, dominant and sexy. Though their love was quick, it was believable which in most books it is not. The futurization was pretty cool and the descriptive content wasn't overly done. The sex was hot and realistic. The domintaion wasn't oveer the top or brutally harsh. All in all this was a good read.

Dark Conditioning

I loved this book. It is a dystopian novel (maybe, sorta) and the relationship between Tara and Mark has so many twists and turns it made me dizzy, all concluded within less than a year of story time. Most of that story time happened between the two characters and one small room. It almost felt like a play, with excellent and convincing dialogue. It was well written, well edited and OMG, the characters in this play slowly slid into my heart, head and psyche, making it an infinitely satisfying read.

Spanking Dystopia, More Bark than Bite

Okay. I didn’t see how the little the hero did to the heroine “conditioned” her. It was pretty soft conditioning, as it goes. Interesting world, based firmly on what’s going on currently, with elements of 1984, Animal Farm, etc. The use of the internet got my attention - kind of cool. And, if you like spanking, this is the dystopia for you. ;-). Also, look up “Kilroy”. Nice meta reference.

Good read

I enjoyed this book and read it in one night. I was a bit worried as I thought it may be a bit too dark based on the title and synopsis, but it wasn’t. I liked the way that the internal narrative explained the conditioning process, my only criticism is that it came to a brisk end...... maybe room for a sequel

This was a refreshing read

Smart and witty heroine - targeted to be conditioned
A dominant handler who has to make a choice wipe her mind or attempt to program the subject
What follows is a sweet and at times shocking romance that leaves the reader with vs case of the warm fuzzies
Adult material
