Miss Grace Thackery never believed that she would marry because she thought she was too plain. When a friend gives her a copy of Matrimonial News, Grace has hope that she might find a husband who is not focused on outward beauty, but instead can appreciate the other qualities she possesses.
After corresponding with a man, Grace agrees to move to Montana to get married. However, when her future husband asks for a picture, Grace worries that he will cancel the engagement when he sees her photograph.

An acquaintance convinces Grace to paint her face, add some padding, and wear a wig to alter her beauty for the photograph. Reluctantly, Grace agrees, but harbors a great guilt over being deceitful.

When she arrives in Montana, the man she is supposed to marry leaves her at the train station when her appearance does not match the picture she sent. Alone and scared, Grace does not know what to do next.

Hope is not lost… Grace meets a man that appreciates her looks and her character, but she also knows that allowing herself to have feelings for him will come with many challenges. Will Grace ever have a second chance at happiness?

From the very start, "Finding Hope", from the well renowned historical author Ruby Hill, the Mail Order bride journey in this novel was anything other than a fairytale. The process of the Mail Order Bride, and what could go wrong in the process, terribly wrong, made for a very emotive story. Ruby Hill captures readers with her original and romantic story lines, memorable characters and Happy Ever Afters. A book that is hard to put down, captivating from the very start.

"Finding Hope", the 1st installment in the Brides and Promises series by Ruby Hill, is a book that easily rated 5-stars for many reasons, including:
*In many stories available, the Mail Order Bride process is written with romance and the chance to find true love and live happily ever after. However, the approach that Ruby Hill takes in "Finding Hope" portrays a very different story, bringing out the "warts and all" so to speak of the mail order bride process. As at the time in history, acquiring a mail order bride was the current fashion in the way to find a wife when women where scarce in their town. In this story though, the emotional impacts on women were clearly depicted through the new-to-be bride Grace Thackery. This made the story feel much more realistic, and much more compelling to read. The story brings on a flood of tears with the horrible rejection and humiliation that Grace had to face alone in a new town. The many unexpected twists to the plot keep the story alive and entertaining, seeking a HEA!
*The character of Grace Thackery depicted in "Finding Hope" is one that easily invokes an investment in the hope of a HEA. Even when rejected and alone, Grace remains strong and determined to start a new life with a helpful and lonely older woman. As the plot continues to develop, the character of Grace continues to grow. As her self confidence and happiness grows so does our want in her finding her happiness and for her a husband. Her second chance man (no spoilers!) was very much more agreeable than the first rude arrogant one and definitely worthy of being swooned over! After all, no matter what the time period, its all that anyone really wants - to be loved for who they are, A reason this story is so captivating and emotionally charged.
*The attention to detail of many of the historical facts, settings and behaviors at the time makes it feel like being flashed back in time. From details of the mail order bride process and it's emotional effects that it would have on women giving up everything to find a husband half way across the country alone, the etiquette of the time and what behaviors were polite and looked upon, the process of taking a photograph, travelling by train and its vast timelines, farming procedures and rural settings, romance and what was considered appropriate, plus much more, gave readers who love historical romance a glance at life in that time.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading "Finding Hope" by Ruby Hill and look forward to reading the next book in the "Brides and Promises" series. Best of all, the stories in the series are stand alone, so it doesn't matter what order they are read in. I recommend this story to all lovers of historical romance who enjoy reading about Mail Order Brides, and prefer a clean and sweet romance.

I reviewed this book voluntarily after receiving and advance copy from Booksprout.

Miss Grace Thackery was alone in life. Without family. And now, her last single friend, Clara, was getting married and leaving the town.
Grace's biggest dream was to have her own family, a husband and children, but there was a problem with her.

Grace was not a pretty woman. Looking at herself in the mirror, she saw a plain-looking woman with straight brown hair and a face with no big attractions.
She was a fine cook and seamstress, and maybe that's how she could find a husband, but not in that little town she lived in.

That's when Clara sends to Grace by letter a magazine called The Matrimonial News, with several ads of men and women looking for husband or wife.

Grace makes an ad and gets an answer from George Stubbs.
When George asks her to send a picture, she worries that he will reject her and does a trick: she takes the picture with a wig, makeup and makes curves around her body.
When Grace travels to Montana to meet her future husband, a nightmare falls on her. Feeling deceived, George Stubbs rejects her at the train station, abandoning her.
With nowhere to go, Grace is welcomed by Mrs Mary Stevens.

To return the gentleness, Grace offers to be the cook at Mary's ranch, and that's when she meets Mary's nephew, Thomas.

Thomas Stevens was a hard worker. He had acquired part of his aunt's ranch and tirelessly made the lands thrive, but it was still very early on.
He and Grace get along, and soon Mary realizes that something good can happen in that friendship.

But one not very good day, Thomas hears from George the Grace's mistake, and that makes the image Thomas had of her - almost a saint! - collapse.
Grace's chance to marry and have her family once again escapes from her hands.

Having judged Grace so harshly, Thomas discovered the truth about her, and from there, he would have to prove to her that her true beauty was beyond physical.

The book is sweet and romantic. Without eroticism (meaning: sex scene), it brings a female character without great physical attractions.
In fact, I even thought that the author exaggerated to repeat so many times about the character's lack of beauty, even though I understood her purpose with it.
For readers who want a good romance story with HEA.

This was an excellent reading. I enjoyed it very much. The pace of the book was good and at no time did it feel rushed. I also thought it ended well. I enjoyed the characters especially Grace Thackery. I liked it that she wasn't for the most part physically attractive; although like many women I have known was probably prettier that she herself actually felt that she was. The most important thing about Grace is that she has a good heart. George Stubbs the guy she went out to Montana to meet and marry was a jerk. And, he wasn't any more honest about himself then Grace was with the picture she sent to him. Thomas Stevens for the most part is a good man; but even he on a couple of occasions was a bit of a jerk. But one of the most important messages of this book is the power of forgiveness. Not only to forgive others; but to forgive oneself. I also liked Mary Stevens and what a good friend she is to Grace. It was a very good story that I was proud to read. I hope to read more of this author's books. This book goes to show you that a clean romance can still be a good read. Loved it.

I thoroughly enjoyed this sweet mail order bride romance with great characters, romance and intrigue. Mary was a single woman in a small town with few men and her last friend had married and moved away. The friend sent Mary a marriage publication for mail order brides and she mailed to one man with small kids needing a wife with no love expected. He asked for a picture and she had to go to the next town to make it. A woman there put on makeup and fixed her hair and padded her clothing to look better. When she got off the train the guy would not accept her since she didn't look like the picture when he said he was just looking for a hard worker and mother for his kids. She was left alone devastated at the train station. An older woman rescued her and took her home to live with her. The woman's nephew came daily and he and Grace were falling for each other, but then there were complications and she was going to run away. He caught her and the ending was great. I can't wait to read more boost from this author. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy.

Finding Hope

This was a sweet, clean romance. Grace watched as one by one her friends married and moved away. Her best friend Claire being the last.

Claire encourages Hope to become a mail order bride. Finding an advertisement that sounded like a good man she wrote to him. He replied but asked for a photo be sent back. Taking the stage to the next town to have a photo taken she confides her fear of rejection because she isn’t pretty. The woman convinces Hope to allow her to add padding in areas to make her look more attractive.

When Hope arrives at her destination the man “George” is furious because she deceived him regarding her looks and was plain. He told her he would not marry her and left her standing at the train station.

A kind woman sees Hope crying and after Hope explains everything the woman offers her a position helping her as she is older and needs help with chores.

This woman just happens to have a nephew.

To enhance her chances of being accepted as a mail-order bride, Grace “cheated” and made herself more pleasing to the eye for the picture her future husband asked for. When she arrived at the train station, the farmer is not pleased with her actual looks and left on the spot… without her. That’s when Grace met Mary who offered her to stay as her companion and help her and her nephew out on the farm.
Well, there is a reason why nowadays most women wear make-up! We are not all blessed with exceptional looks and sometimes need a little help. Thankfully, since it’s widely accepted, we don’t have to face the rejection Grace was submitted to. But finally, Grace found people who loved and accepted her for who she was, which is a gift not all of us can brag with. The sweet lesson Grace had to learn the hard way was very encouraging: everyone has self-worth and there’s nothing better than staying true to oneself.

Grace was so alone and never thought she would find a spouse. She feels very plain and unattractive. She gets the idea from a friends to try to be a mail order bride. Another person suggests she pretty herself up for the photo. When she arrives, her groom is unhappy to see she doesn't look like the photo and leaves.her. Luckily a kind person offers her another chance and there she encounters a man that she truly wants as her husband.

This story really touched my heart. I felt her pain and loneliness so strongly. I was happy to see her meet a man like Thomas. He is a good man and he really appreciates Grace. They have a genuine connection and it is very heart-warming. The past catches up with her and they have to work thru some real issues to find happiness. You know they both deserve happiness and want your happily ever after.

This was a good "Mail Order Bride" book, a little different from others I have read.

Grace was more of a plane girl instead of pretty and the man she went out to Montana to meet left her at the train station.
Along came Mary, a wonderful lady that needed help with her ranch.
Mary had a nephew that lived close by and when he met Grace, he seen beyond her outer looks. He seen her inner beauty, her gentleness, and her wonderful way of helping others.

There were problems, but everything worked out and there was a happy ending.

This was a good book. I thought I had rated it a five star, but when I clicked onto this, I see I put a four. I meant a five star.
My first book by Ruby Hill. She is a good author. I will read others.

As I read this book I kept feeling like I had read it before, if so I never added to my Goodreads list, if not there is another book with a similar story floating around out there that I have read. Either way, this was an enjoyable read. Being considered plain and homely is difficult, especially with all of the insecurities that come with it. Resorting to becoming a mail order bride is understandable, choosing to deceive a possible match, not the best choice, even if made thinking looks didn't really matter to the other person. Some of the thoughts and actions of the main character frustrated me a bit, but not enough to keep me from enjoying the story. Looking for the beauty within and placing its importance above outer appearance is the theme of this book, which is one I appreciate.

Finding Hope: Mail Order Bride, by Ruby Hill is a sweet, emotional story. Grace is not a pretty woman, according to the description of her. She is living in a small town with little chance of finding true love. As a result, she answers an ad for a "mail order bride". Can Grace find love in a town thousands of miles away?

This is a very emotional story. I felt the pain, the hope, the frustration and the love that Grace experienced. This is a sweet, clean romance that will warm your heart. This is a great book to read while sipping hot chocolate in front of a fireplace. A great story for Valentine's day!

married and moved from the small community. Her friend sends her a newspaper
which has adds for mail-order brides.

Grace decides to answer one of the ads. She finds herself moving to a new area at the

her.

with her as long as she wants. Grace meets Thomas, Mary's nephew.

Absolutely beautiful. A true tear-jerker, I found myself having to stop often to wipe the tears from my eyes. Such a beautiful story of true love, this book would melt anyone's heart. Miss Grace may not be the most stunning woman in town, but she definitely has a heart of gold. The tale of the ugly duckling comes to mind as I read this book. Ms. Hill has a true gift and will take your heart on a wild roller coaster ride as she brings to life, Miss Grace and Thomas, and their journey to discover true love, even though it was through shear chance. I'm sure Fate had role in this.

True beauty comes from within

Some men never see the goodness and compassion within a plain woman. And so it is, a young woman is passed over as all her friends wed. In desperation, she becomes a mail-order bride: allowing herself to be falsely presented in a picture to a prospective groom.

Deserted at the end of her journey, she is in despair until help comes from an unlikely source. Ah, the twists and turns this delightful tale takes. Read this uplifting story concerning the endless possibilities of the future, if one is willing to step forward with courage.

Finding Hope is a sweet story about a young girl named Grace who is not 'beautiful' in appearance, but lovely in character. She finds love, but it nearly gets destroyed by the fact that she made a desperate choice because of fear. Thomas has his own struggles and isn't sure what to do. Terrific ending. I loved the way the author handled the mistakes of both Grace and Thomas. Terrific, innocent story.

Wonderful! Stories like this are why I love the mail-order bride and historical romance genre. "Grace" is the perfect name for Grace. Characters like her give me strength. And men like Thomas, with their morals and compassion, Mary, her generosity and insight. This was a quick read, great editing, even with me reading and re-reading some pages and paragraphs because of the beautiful writing.

A nice clean romantic story! I enjoyed the history thrown in here and the setting. There is good characterization and its really for that time when you're feeling like a sweeter love story with all the romantic feels but nothing too gorey in the sexy department.

When Grace has to send a picture to her prospective husband, she unwisely allows an acquaintance to make her look less plain. Of course, George rejects her. Grace becomes a companion to Mary who gives Grace a home. Mary's nephew Thomas lives nearby and visits often. Will Grace and Thomas find a HEA? Well written story about outer vs. inner beauty. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Sweet Grace,
There is so much more to beauty than just the outward appearance.
And you are truly beautiful.
Just when you’ve decided you will always be alone…
Love makes a place for your heart to belong.

Bottom line: This story is beautiful, sweet and so good. 5 stars.
