Tolpuddle: A Novel of Heroism

Rate this book
1833 How long can George Loveless and five other farm workers from Tolpuddle continue to work long hours for low pay? To survive, they must improve their pay and working conditions. Risking the wrath of their non-caring employers, the six ‘Martyrs’ dare to set up a farm-workers’ trade union. The aristocratic establishment claims that this is illegal and put the six unionists on trial. They are found guilty and transported to Australia for seven years. There they are forced to work in slave-like conditions. Back in England, huge processions and petitions are organized to cancel this verdict. Will their supporters succeed in overcoming this blatant injustice and bring the ‘Martyrs’ back to England?

Based on a true story, this novel describes how these six simple but savvy men take on the British government to fight for their liberty and better conditions for the working-man.
