Ghosts from the past. Visions of the future. A priest on a doomed mission to a heathen island, a painting hidden from public view for seventy years, and a Fiat Punto full of rotting groceries. Love, loss and loneliness are the themes that unite these eight stories, five of them translated from their original Gaelic by the author.
A series of short stories that vary in quality. I found that I quite enjoyed the story that was entitled 'Reflection' and 'The Road Home'. The best was the the book's title, which was really good and could have been extended. As with many of the stories, it lacks a real punch and an ending that has a 'Twist' or indeed a more formal denouement, which is a shame. Its an okay, kind of read ... short and sweetish.
I love short stories as I believe that a good author can tell a wonderful story with a great theme, a short but complete plot and a memorable main character in few words. Although these stories vary in length and some were more interesting than others, all were well written. The ones that made a real impact with me were The Back Of Her Head, Doppelganger and the Portrait of An Unknown Woman (the latter which could have been extended into a novella)
