Sectors New Allies #2

Mateer: Badari Warriors

Rate this book
Megan Garrison, a doctor at the Sectors Amarcae 7 colony, goes to sleep one night as usual only to wake up in her nightgown, strapped to a table in an alien lab, destined to be the subject of terrifying experiments. Granted a brief reprieve, Megan and the other kidnapped humans are released in the middle of a forestlike enclosure on this unknown world and told to survive as best they can for now.

Her only hope is Mateer, the genetically engineered alien warrior imprisoned with the humans. He knows more than he’s sharing about this planet, their captors and the fate of other humans, including perhaps her own sisters. Turns out everyone from her colony has been kidnapped by the Khagrish, a ruthless race of alien scientists. Working for enemies of the human-led Sectors, the Khagrish have created the Badari to be super soldiers.

Mateer, a tough Badari enforcer, now a rebel, is captured while infiltrating the lab to help his pack bring it down. He’s also been ordered by his leaders to search for Megan and save her life at all costs. Tortured by the enemy, he’s offered one chance at survival – convince Megan to become his mate and assist the Khagrish with further experiments.

As the situation at the lab grows worse, Megan struggles against her deep attraction to Mateer, while she does her best to shield the other humans from the terrible Khagrish experiments. For his part, Mateer knows she really is his fated mate and despairs of being able to keep her safe, as the rebel attack is delayed and she fights the truth of their bond.

Will they be able to work together to defeat Khagrish plans and preserve human lives until the promised rescue happens? And what of their future together – will Megan accept Mateer as her true mate, or walk away if she’s freed?

This is the second book in a new scifi romance series and each novel has a satisfying Happy for Now ending for the hero and heroine, not a cliffhanger. Some overarching issues do remain unresolved in each book since this is a series but romance always wins the day in my novels!

Picking up right where Aydarr left off, this latest Badari Warriors story follows Mateer, the beta of the pack and his venture back into captivity to help find his Alpha mate’s sister and free more humans from the labs.

I enjoyed being back into world of the Badari and The Sectors in this spinoff series. While much about Mateer is similar to the first book, I appreciated that Veronica Scott gave the hero, Mateer, and the heroine, Megan, different personalities from the first pair so their romance had a different tone and pace. It helps that Megan is a doctor and fierce about doing what she needs to do to help her patients in the face of the menacing alien scientists doing experiments on the humans and Badari. Mateer respects Aydarr’s leadership, but now he understands the mate pull and the need to be with her even as he tries to be patient for both Megan to adjust to him and waiting for the rescue plan to kick in.

Interesting extra details that come out about the villain alien plans and what happens when a human gets a Badari blood transfusion. I enjoyed this couple and the blend of alien world, action, and romance. Looking forward to what comes next in the series. Though this series can standalone, I do recommend that sci-fi romance lovers start with The Sectors so the mentions of the backstory for the humans make sense.

My full review will post at Books of My Heart on June 28th.

Boring

2.75 Stars

This is the 2nd book in this series. Both have the same problems.

1st they are boring. Was a good premise but the execution is sorely lacking.

We never fully understand why the experiments are happening. What they are supposed to accomplish. And most make no sense at all.

For a short story of about 150 pages it really drags. It's very hard to connect with the characters.

While there is some interesting bits it isn't enough to keep my attention or make me care.

DNF at 59% page 93.

I will not be continuing this series.

I read Mateer as a buddy read with Sophia Rose and had fun returning for book 2 in this series. Mateer has a similar premise to Aydarr, the first book in the series. In both books both the main characters are captured by aliens and become the subjects of their experiments. Despite the similar set up I thought the author did a good job making Mateer a different story than Aydarr and I liked how the plot and romance felt different enough.

With Mateer I had the same issue as with Aydarr in that I struggled with the prison setting. Both characters are subjects of horrifying experiment, although I appreciate that we don't see a lot of that from their point of view, it is clear what a horrible situation they're in. And it just doesn't make for the most fun or romantic setting and could be tough to read about at times. The plot is a bit less action packed than the first book due to how things progress which made sense. Although I would've liked if there was more they could do as they have very little control about their situation for most of the book. The ending felt a bit fast, but I liked how things ended for this couple and look forward to reading more of the series.

Despite the prison setting, I quite liked the romance between Megan and Mateer. I liked the way they quickly catch the other up to speed about what they know when they meet and get to know each other. I liked the way their connection deepened and thought their romance was well written despite the prison setting. I just would've liked to see more of them together while they're being free. I thought they made for a great couple and enjoyed reading about them.

In comparison to the first book there are less side characters here and the main characters spend more time of the book together, which made me feel this romance more strongly than in book 1. With less side characters I also felt the focus was a bit more on these two getting to know each other and not much about other side characters. The romance progressed a bit slower than in the first book, although still pretty quick. With a lot of the plot and world established in the first book there was less of the heavy lifting this book had to do in that regard. I liked how things develop in this book and I am looking forward to the rest of the series.

To summarize: This was a well written science fiction romance book. The prison setting doesn't make for the most romantic setting and could be tough to read about at times, but despite that I liked the romance between Mateer and Megan. While it has a similar set up as book 1 there are enough differences for this book to feel fresh. The focus is on the romance and the two main characters and I enjoyed reading about them. I disliked how little control they had over their situations and I feel I'll be able to enjoy the rest of the series more once they're all free. There were some interesting developments in this book and I liked seeing things play out. There was less action than the first book, but I liked how there was more time and focus for the romance.

The second book in the Sectors New Allies series by Veronica Scott. Jill's sister, Megan, wakes up to find herself still in her jammies in a strange lab. There are many more humans there and not all survive. But as a doctor Megan feels the need to help those she can. Then Mateer, an enforcer of the Badari, is caught when he infiltrates the facility. The Badari were prisoners of the Khagrish but rebelled and escaped.

This book begins shortly after the first book and continues the storyline. I am really enjoying this series and can't wait to continue on to the next.

Just binge-read both Badari Warrior books

I had never read one of Ms. Scott’s books, but saw a blurb on FaceBook and tried the first one in the series: Aydarr. I was hooked from page one. One of my favorite genres is alien abduction romance, and I read a lot of them, so I thought I’d seen all the plot twists there were. I was wrong. Ms. Scott’s premise is unique, with many, many layers of characters and plots. Her heroes: Aydarr in book one and Mateer in book two, are just what you’d want them to be - strong, honorable, smart, protective, but willing to recognize the strength of their heroines. The heroines, Jill and Megan, are smart, savvy women, with skills and compassion. I loved the first book so much I immediately bought and read the second, Mateer. It was just as good! My only complaint: I already read a couple dozen series. Now I’ve got another must-read to wait for!

Evil alien experiments, action and romance.

Quibble: A little too similar to book one for my tastes. It's so hard with series--you want it to be similar enough to book one to still appeal to the same readers, but not too similar. Probably if I'd waited a little longer between books it wouldn't have tripped me up.

Veronica Scott has another winner. A species of part-human warriors were imprisoned by their sadistic creators. In the previous book, they escaped, leaving human prisoners behind. Knowing what will happen if he's caught, Mateer volunteers to rescue his alpha's mate's sister. Megan is a doctor. Like the others, she's captured by the Khagrish, the nasty creators. A chance encounter in the hall and Mateer knows he's found the sister. His determination versus the Khagrishs' cruelty. Megan tries to provide medical help to the injured and sick. But is she willing to go along with a sick experiment?

Strong characters and a tense plot equal a real page-turner.

Megan Garrison wakes up a captive of the Khagrish. Mateer is captured when trying to set up a rescue of the humans held by the Khagrish. Megan and Mateer become a team as they try to keep the other humans alive until they can be rescued. This is a typical alien mate story. It does tie in to the previous Sector books. This is not a trope that I really like so even though it is setting up a new story line it just is not my favorite. That said I will continue to follow the series.

**MINOR SPOILERS**
This series is fairly large and has connections, I think, to other series. The books are set in the same universe with different planets and different species. This is the middle book of the story of three sisters. After that, the series focuses on others.
The Badari are a group of enhanced soldiers that have had animal DNA spliced into them. Various experiments have been performed on them over the course of several generations. There are no female Badari. The doctors, aliens called Khagrish, have done the experiments are generally sadistic in a way that is reminiscent of Nazi Germany.
Megan, the female main character, is the sister of the female main character in the previous book. Like her sister, she was abducted and brought to a new planet to undergo experimentation. Megan is a doctor and tries to help the other people who were abducted. Megan is feisty.
Mateer is sent to the lab where Megan is being held (along with many others) in order to try to do some reconnaissance and to set up a device that can be used to hack their systems. He is captured and put with Megan and the other humans. He falls immediately in love with Megan and is quick to be open with his feelings. He was very sweet and loving towards her.
Megan is a little more hesitant because of her abduction and because her world has been turned upside down. She does not deny the attraction but wants to move slowly. While understandable, her hesitancy makes Mateer feel worried that she will not reciprocate his feelings.
The Badari are an alien species that have been experimented on in the hopes they will become super soldiers. Each 5 years, a new group of cadets is created and Mateer, the male main character of this book, is part of the 8th generation. Following that logic (and the way older generations are killed), , Mateer would have been about 20, but the way his character and that of his pack was written, he seemed to be a bit older.
Mateer and his pack have fangs and claws. They also can communicate telepathically with each other. Spoiler… when Megan receives a blood transfusion from Mateer, she is able to communicate with him as well. They have been kept in line by the Khagrish because of their concern for the younger soldiers or cadets.
The story was split between Mateer and Megan’s point of view with perhaps a little more from Megan’s.
The story happens over a short period of time. There is insta-love between Megan and Mateer. Part of this is because of a mate bond that might come from Mateer’s animal side.
There was a delay in a rescue that was not explained.
I plan to go on to read the third book in the series which is about the third and last sister. The series continues with other characters from the series. It is not a perfect 5 star book but I rounded up.

Mateer (Badari, Aydarr’s lead enforcer) & Megan Garrison (doctor, specifically a trauma surgeon, Jill’s younger sister).

Didn’t expect to love these books as much as I am. They are a good combination of the “one couple per book” style with a strong through-line connecting the books. Start with Aydarr and read them in order.

Mateer, Aydarr’s lead enforcer, is jealous of what Aydarr has found with his mate Jill. As second in command, he feels like he ought to be paired with Jill’s sister Lily, but it’s clear the passion isn’t there on either of their parts. So when Aydarr proposes a small team assault on one of the other labs, to rescue the humans, Mateer volunteers.

Jill’s sister Megan wakes up from stasis strapped to an examination table. They are awakening the humans en mass, but with the typical Khagrish sadism. Only half of the humans are given the recovery nutrients, the other half are left to fend for themselves. That doesn’t sit well with Megan, a doctor. She convinces the scientists to give her recovery materials for all those who survive long enough to be transferred to a cell.

Security measures have been beefed up and Mateer, who entered the facility on his own is captured and tortured. While he’s being transported via an antigrav stretcher, he comes upon a group of humans newly released from stasis, among them a woman he initially mistakes for Jill’s sister Lily.

The guards bring all the humans outside, telling them they are to be released into the Preserve for 14 days. Mateer, still injured and unconscious, is given to them. The scientists hope to repeat the mating between Aydarr and Jill with Mateer and Megan.

Once recovered, Mateer guides the humans to food and shelter, but it’s clear his priority is Megan. Not only because that is what his alpha wants, but because the lack of chemistry he felt with Lily only emphasizes the chemistry he feels with Megan. When Megan is bitten and is beyond any medical attention they can provide, he takes her back to the lab, surrendering himself so that Megan may be saved.

Unable to cure her another way, the Khagrish scientist decides to try giving Megan Materr’s blood, as the Badari have an immunity to the insect bites that are killing Megan. The transfusion takes, with a welcomed side effect. Megan can now communicate with the Badari telepathically.

They are put in a cell together, with the hope that they will breed. While Megan is reluctant to give into the mate bond Mateer feels, she is willing, even eager to have sex with him. When they wake in the morning, Mateer tells her Megan is pregnant. Apparently the transfusion counteracted the injection she received before being abducted.

The scientists are pleased with the pregnancy. Unfortunately, they are determined to separate the pair, mates or not, forcing Mateer to impregnate other women.

The countdown is on. Aydaar’s rescue attempt is imminent. But can they get everyone out before the experiments on the humans begin?

Mateer by Veronica Scott

This was Sectors New Allies Series book 2 and it was well written as the first one was. The story had all the elements of drama and just the right amount of romance. Megan is a doctor captured by aliens who is trying to do the right things to survive. Mateer is a Badari Warrior who escaped from the alien keeping his people in prison. They meet and click right away.

Deja Vu

I thought it was smart that even encampment and surrounding areas were the same. But different to with so many people taken, I was wondering if any investigation was going on to track the missing. I would like to see the 3 difference group of species get together and drive the diabolical scientist off the planet. Can't wait to read the next story of this series.

Love that this second chapter in the series takes off right where the first book ends. There is a little flash back but just enough to keep the story moving. Love the story line and new characters! I felt at times I was right in the lab with them. I have read other series but this one holds its own.....A+

Another really great sci-fi romance! I really liked that they established really wary on that Mateer didn’t feel anything for Megan’s twin sister. I liked that the two of them had a real conversation that seemed to spark their interest in each other, and that it wasn’t just a physical thing. Great continuation to the series!

This is the second book in this series and I enjoyed it. There’s action, and drama and a few twists that keep you flicking pages.
The world building continues and the characters are more defined and their individual personalities well developed and easy to distinguish from each other.
