Here's the thing I'm not a huge fan of Mark Bautista, I've heard some of his songs and saw Lastikman when I was little but that's it. I'm not even aware of the rumors about him until I read this book, you can say that I live under a rock for not hearing those, or maybe I wasn't just paying attention. But either way I enjoyed reading his story. The way he told them got he hooked, to the point I decided to finish reading and sharing my thoughts about this at 2AM. I kind of wish that this book is longer than 120+ pages, there are stories that maybe he could have gotten deeper, like maybe his relationships with his family and friends, I just wanted to know more. I do think Mark Bautista is brave to write and release this, not everyone, especially in the entertainment industry here in the Philippines would have the courage.
I loved this book because it was easy to read (though I noticed some typos, missing words, and grammatical errors towards the end of the book) plus there were some important life lessons in there.
That being said, I believe that all of us are fighting our own private battle, it's up to us to win it and in this battle called life, I must say that Mark Bautista emerged victorious. Here are some of my favorite quotable quotes from the book:
1- But it's not even about that anymore. It's beyond labels and stereotypes. It's about understanding the complexity of humankind. You go beyond that because sometimes things in life are incomprehensible so it boils down to just love. You hold on to that. I think that's where acceptance comes in and then peace.
2- Everything will happen at the right time and place. If not, then obviously, it's not meant for me. So again, snap out of it and move on. There's so much to do in life. Lahat ng pangyayari sa buhay ay isang malaking panaginip lamang, so 'wag masyadong seryosohin pag may mga ganung problema. Live life to the fullest.
3- When I'm alone, my mind is busy.
4- Love begins with love for one's self. I need to love myself first before I can truly love others without reservation.

I've been reading a lot of memoirs lately, so it's a little difficult not to compare the quality of Mark's book to the ones I've read recently. I understand that he is not a writer, but an amazing singer and theater actor, so that comparison might be a little unfair. However, I still feel like he could have been guided better by his publisher/agent/editor to write this in a more extensive and profound way than like a compilation of short personal essays. (I think it's important to note that I read this entire book in two hours. And I'm NOT a fast reader.)
The book, without a doubt in my mind, was written solely for Mark's coming out. The topic was strategically placed near the end, but it was also the main topic for the interview in the last chapter. I won't blame Mark for this intention, since that's really a big revelation for someone who works in his industry, but I was hoping that he'll have more stories to share about himself than what was already shared. Again, I felt like these are short personal essays than a good memoir to know and learn from someone with his talents and experience. It still felt like I was looking at him through a glass window—so near, yet so far with a barrier between us.
All in all, I learned that Mark is a good person who had an incredible life journey so far. Maybe he'll release a better written memoir one day. Who knows, right? But for now, I think you can watch youtube clips of his interviews and you'll get the same gist as what's written in the book.
