Never explore an ancient Egyptian tomb. That was the first rule of adventuring. It was right before never, ever pick up the ancient artifact inside and quickly followed by don’t get sent back in time. Luke Peters did all of those things. Now, this college student turned magic-flinging werewolf has a choice. Will he use his newfound powers to stop a gang of escaped mummies, rescue a priestess and the goddess she serves, and defeat an ancient evil from taking over Egypt? Or will he leave the world to its fate? Yeah, he didn’t think it was much of a choice either.
When New York Times Bestselling author, J. A. Cipriano was in second grade, his teacher gave everyone in class a journal to write down whatever they wanted. Their first subject was to write about something they didn’t like. J. A. chose to write about why he didn’t like writing. His reasoning was simple. He had bad handwriting. Even then, he was destined to be an engineer due to his messy scrawl.
Unfortunately, he found through the course of this little adventure that he actually liked writing. That year was sort of the high point for his writing career because he won a writing contest for the state. He got to go to a big dinner and his teacher was all dressed up.
He kept writing little stories, year after year, and in sixth grade, won another contest. In seventh grade, he broke his arm and got the cast signed by both Dean Koontz and Stan Lee. It is, by far, the coolest cast he’s owned. That was about the time he found video games and anime. His writing turned mostly toward fanfiction until about ninth grade when he wrote his first novel, a small book about twenty thousand words called Revelations. In sophomore year, he wrote two more books to complete the trilogy because he saw Star Wars that year and learned trilogies were the cool thing to do.
He rewrote Revelations during his senior year, and his wife swears it is the best thing he’s written. J.A. is not so sure. Every time he reads it, he cringes, but then again, he hates everything he writes, so there is that.
It was about that time, he got heavily involved in a fanfiction writing group, but that isn’t one hundred percent accurate. It was a world based on a popular anime but everything was created especially for this world. It made it so that every story someone wrote was unique.
Imagine writing a Star Wars novel set 1,000 years after A New Hope, where everything that happened was a distant memory and you get the idea. You have the force, some distant memories of the past, and that’s pretty much it.
He wrote about a million words (863K to be exact) for them before he decided to do his own thing. He wrote another novel. He put it in a drawer. He wrote another one that eventually became the basis for The Hatter is Mad. His next novel was Kill It With Magic, his first real novel. It’s not bad, but it’s bumpy. This is unfortunate because the books get loads better as the series progresses.
Since then, he’s written six more novels, four of which are in the Lillim Callina Series, and one in the Abby Banks series. The other is stuck in a drawer for time undetermined. He’s writing his next book now which is about werewolves fighting mummies in Ancient Egypt. After that, he will move onto Abby Banks 2. The Spy Within will come out in June or July.
J.A. also has three chinchillas. Two of them are grey, and because of this, they are named Slate and Cadmium. The third is named Jet because he’s black, and Jet is old English for black. See, creative. He also has a cat named Turtle. This does pose problems for his two-year-old from time to time.
King of Gods by J.A. Cipriano is a fun fantasy book! The first page started out so serious and then the next page got me laughing. The book was both humorous and scattered with suspense. Loved this book. Great fun dialogue topped it off!
This story had a frenetic funky freshness that I found charming. I liked the side characters though our time with them was brief, I liked the world though at some points it felt a little random. This was a nice read and was over before I could get tired of it. Like having a well apportioned candy bar, sweet but not so big that you'll start to get sick of it.
Sadly disjointed and could have been fleshed out so much more. If this was the rewrite then I shudder at what the original must have been. Keep writing and I’ll keep reading...but probably not this series.
The first part of the story is of fixing a error that the main character caused accidentally and then correcting the issue and as part of that learning about his new abilities. (A plot that I have seen before.) The story then turns and follows a different path to a resolution with a opening to a next book. I enjoyed the story.
So, I rather liked this book. It wasn't IMO better than the builder series, but it was pretty damn good. I'm looking forward to the next installment in this series. FYI, this book has adult themes in it. Nothing explicit but heavily implied. So it's SFW. For the most part.
I have made no secret of the fact that I really enjoy the way Mr. Cipriano writes. I just like the fun and joy that seems to be present in the books he writes. This book was no different. Luke (how does everyone know his name? A book inside joke…) discovers something on his archaeological dig, and soon he and his new friend Aziza go for a ride through mythology and time. I loved these two characters, and I loved the fun they had, and the people they meet on their run to stop mummies, gods, and fantastical creatures. All the while, Luke’s powers grow to help stop an upcoming big-bad. I do have to admit there was a couple writing bumps but nothing distracting; besides, I read for fun and entertainment, and this author’s books never disappoint. If you like adventure-type urban fantasy, you will love this one! Highly recommend! Thanks to the author for the e-book which I reviewed voluntarily.
Is more of a 2.5 rating because as though it was an ok read I didn't really liked it. Don't get me wrong is not that is a bad book is just not to my liking, there was a big dissonance with the characters here, for example Aziza she was a disembodied spirit for I am going to guess century’s trapped to an specific desolated ruin, with no contact with the modern world, but still acts like a 21st century young girl even using pop culture references. I don't know it felt out of character for her to do that, and she wasn't the only one. But is not all bad really the power scales are decent and not to OP to damp the story, the pacing as well is really well executed, even the introduction of all the deity’s and great beast was fun. So as a light read with not much in-depth into characterization it was a decent book.
Ok, the book was well written, it’s just that the MC made me want to throw my tablet across the floor. He is surprised by supernatural stuff after just having seen a bunch of it. However I could put that to the MC being in shock. However his level of knowledge jumps around, to the point that it’s pointed out by side characters. He starts out on a dig in Egypt with his class, so you assume he has some knowledge of Egyptian myth, and at points he does, then he fails to recognize the name of major deities. This just pulled me out of the story, and made me feel like it wasn’t well thought through.
Ok, I have only 3 things that I didn’t ABSOLUTELY LOVE about this book & even then it is actually after some very anal nitpicking. I honestly love 99.99999% of this. First thing that I don’t absolutely love is characters physical descriptions are kinda vague; which is fine but I just personally prefer some more details about the characters build and height. Second *Spoiler alert* I would have loved to be able to read the adult interactions between Luke and Bast *Spoiler over*. Lastly I would absolutely love to know who or what Tom is, not in a Spoiler way, but honestly Tom pretty much just came out of left field so I would like some backstory to understand what is with the character Tom, even if it was just in the glossary.
I thought this book was going to be good from the cover. Even from the beginning it started off good. But then all of these things started happening and it seemed like the scenes were only half written and half thought out because they made NO SENSE! There was no reason that I could see why Like should be bowing to the God of Chaos if they were in an Isis tomb or why Aliza was a mummy. That was as far as I got because I couldn’t take the confusion anymore.
This seemed like a good story from the intro I read but did not live up to it ,...there was no intro to the character just a few paragraphs here and there..the story did not flow very well it went from one thing to the next...could be a good book but just not as it written
I gave the book a four star rating because I enjoyed the book, but I thought it had a slow start. The slow start made it difficult to get in to the story. When they entered ancient Egypt, the quickened considerably. From there til end ,the story became more entertaining and engaging. I look forward
Written in true Cipriano style, King of the Gods is a great read. From modern Greece to ancient Egypt, Lucas' journey begins when he uncovers an ancient Egyptian artifact. Before he can even begin to question why an Egyptian artifact is buried in Greece, the action takes off! And never stops. Well written, with a great plot and characters. I hope this turns into a series!!
There really is no descernable plot. The story meanders all over the place and the plot mechanics continuously fall apart. This book would probably be enjoyable to pre-teens or those who enjoy r.a. salvatore stories. The MC is ridiculous and there are no good character building mechanics. For me it was boring and very transparent. I do not recommend this one.
Dude you seriously need to stop writing so many Cool books. I'm about to lose track of all the series I'm reading lol. Anyways great book with Egyptian lore love it. Reminds me of Rick Riordans Kane chronicles series. Excited to see what Luke and wepawet are up to next.
Luke was digging for Egyptian artifacts to earn a college credit but what happened to him when he finds one is unbelievable and transforms him into something not of this world. Try to work with the Gods and their prejudices and problematic differences are always at a impasse and then there are always pretty girls(beings). Good storyline, good book. I received a complimentary copy of this book.
