Contained in the pages of this book are the stories of city lives. They are ordinary people on one level, high flyers on another, but all of them have something in common - their lives have been changed by an encounter with Jesus.
You'll be introduced to lives from the Premier League to Parliament, fashion to finance, music to the military, baking to business and more in this book.
Each story of faith has something different that may intrigue, surprise or shock you, but each will share with you how Jesus radically changed their life.
Marcus Nodder is senior pastor of St Peter's Barge - a floating church in London's Canary Wharf. Based on a converted Dutch freight barge moored on West India Quay, the church has two main operations - a Sunday church for those who live in the Docklands area, and a midweek church for those who work in the Canary Wharf offices. He worked briefly in banking before training for Christian ministry at Oak Hill College. He is married to Lina and has four children and a beagle called Sally.
Have you ever wondered if you are the only Christian in your office? Or have you ever heard that Christianity is only for those who are weak and need a crutch through life? Or are you wondering how to respond to some difficult questions that people might have about Christianity?
If so, here is a good book for you to read. Marcus Nodder has drawn together the testimonies of people from all areas of city life and put together City Lives.
This book is a great way of dealing with difficult apologetics questions, whilst listening to someone’s story along the way. Unlike other apologetics book it is not full of facts and statistics, but is instead full of the impact that the message of Christianity has had on people lives. You’ll read of sports professionals, medical professionals, law professionals and a contestant from the Bake Off.
This book contains 14 accounts of how the good news of Jesus has changed people’s lives. If you’re looking to be encouraged in your faith, or if you’re searching for answers to difficult questions, or even if you want to have an easy give a way book City Lives would be a good start on all fronts.
This book was really a breath of fresh air. It contains different testimonies of people who have 'worldly careers' coming to Jesus. It was given to me by the loveliest lady while I was at a youth gathering.
While I have never read a book like this before, I think it lacked diversity. There were only three testimonies about females and I do not feel there was enough age or ethnic diversity. As a young person, I would have liked to read more about people my age or slightly older I would have also liked to read about how these people do mission in their daily lives. I felt like most of the testimonies were simply about people who had encountered difficulties in life and had turned to Jesus but there were no stories about those who had not but came to Jesus anyway. I think it is important to let readers know that not all testimonies of coming to Jesus have pain and suffering behind them, but that those without are just as important.
(4.1) A great book to give to an unbelieving friend. City Lives tells the true stories of people whose lives have been turned around by Jesus Christ.
The particular emphasis of this book is that these people were/are often rich, successful and famous. The stories vary between those who have followed Jesus as long as they can remember and those who turned to Him much later in life.
What works really well about this is that it shows that following Jesus is not a magic secret to make you successful in life, neither is it a psychological crutch for those who are at their lowest. Many - although not all - of the interviewees in the book, were riding on a (worldly speaking) high when they became Christians. All of them confess that they came to Jesus, yes in spiritual need, but quite simply because they believed the testimony about Jesus to be true.
The epilogue is excellent, arguing logically just why belief in God and Jesus is not a psychological crutch.
Also a good book for believers to be reminded that Christianity is not for the weak, dim or irrational, but for all people from all walks of life.
Particular gems are the chapters about Jonathan Aitken, John Lennox and Yvonne Edwards.
This book contains fourteen biographies of Christians, some of whom are well-known celebrities. I was a bit taken aback by the book's use of third-person narrative for each of the biographies, rather than being direct accounts by the people who they are about, but this was the same format used in similar books I've read by D.J. Carswell.
The stories I enjoyed most were where was detail about how each individual became a Christian, rather than the story setting out that they were Christian from an early age, and the first story, about paralympian Steph Reid, particularly gripped me as it told of how she converted after getting her life-changing injury while out swimming.
I’m not overly religious and I’m not sure what I believe but I picked up this book and another similar one just by looking at the covers. This book is so interesting, I think that even for someone who doesn’t believe to at least understand where and why people find their religion before branding them as crazy or delusional people. The stories are from influential people in worlds where it doesn’t always benefit them to believe in god but I’m glad that people can be proud of their religion without being scared of judgement.
The 14 mini-testimonies of men and women from all walks of professional life are insightful as to how different people, from different backgrounds and with different circumstances all come to the same point ... their need of and then belief in Jesus!
These stories will amaze you, increase your wonder at the variegated grace of God and make you thankful for the letter 'M'! (see 1 Corinthians 1:26!).
Has great evangelistic potential (I have already given several to friends) but also edifying for one's self!
A short series of biographies about Christians in the workplace, and their journey to faith. Written to appeal to seekers who want to find out more about what Christian life looks like, and I can see how it could be helpful for a seeker. It is also very easy to read, and the writer has been careful to remove various bits of standard religious jargon that may be off-putting, whilst genuinely explaining the gospel and how it has changed people. An encouraging read for the believer, and hopefully stimulating for the non-believer!
This is just fabulous. I thoroughly recommend this book for anyone wanting first hand testimonies of lives transformed by the God of the Bible. Each is different, though what they have in common is that they work in high level/ powered jobs (London). Hugely encouraging. Some actually made me a bit teary.
Encouraging book containing accounts of people from different walks of life, some high flyers or well known, and their life changing encounter with Jesus. Reminds us that whoever we are and whatever our situation God is greater. Extremely well written by Marcus Nodder. Helpful narrative and summary. Superb.
