In the great city of Catifornia, the Meofia are by far the most feared of all the felines. At home, their baby sister Kat is enslaved under lock and key. Done with the constant abuse, she escapes, embarking on a perilous journey far beyond the land of cats.
Lost at sea, Kat is captured by a ruthless gang of notorious pirate dogs and forced to the depths of the ocean in search of treasure; where she discovers an ancient city, lost in time.
Here, Kat comes to terms with who she truly is – gaining the courage to fight for her life and freedom, to fulfil an ancient prophecy that she inevitably finds herself entwined with.
Kat lives on the island of Catifornia. She is a slave to her seven brothers, all members of the much feared Meow Meow Meofia. Kat is never allowed to leave her house, only to catch fish for her brothers’ dinner. When Kat dares to defy them they beat her. She spends her time watching Loose Flea movies and reading an old book given to her by her mother. The book was about an ancient city called Purtopia and it was the land of Kat’s ancestors.
Kat gathers the courage to escape along with her best friend, a rat named Pea. Kat soon learns that the world is a dangerous place and she can’t trust anyone. Her only escape is to leave Catifornia and travel across the sea. After many harrowing weeks on the ocean they are picked up by a band of pirate dogs. The dogs were from the island of Gnawbonia which was in a bad state and the dogs were starving. Kat usues her wit and expert Kung Fu moves to save her and Pea’s lives as she fights the pirates, goes under water to discover the lost city of Purtopia and fights a giant squid. She may just be the one to save the dogs on the island of Gnawbonia.
This is a memorable tale of good triumphing over bad and of long held prophesies fulfilled. A story of being brave in the face of adversity! There is animated violence and plenty of breath-holding adventure. The occasional toilet humour will have readers giggling. I read KAT: THE LEGEND OF GNAWBONIA out loud with my five-year-old son Riley and was really impressed with how it held his attention. From start to finish he sat captivated. It took about an hour to read all fourteen chapters, but you could break it up into multiple reading sessions if need be.
The story follows Kat as she tries to escape her abusive brothers, running as far away as she can.
Cue a whirlwind adventure involving a bounty being put on Kat’s head, fearsome pirate dogs, a lost kingdom hidden underwater, unexpected allies and a monster of the deep.
The story finishes with Kat having taught some old dogs new tricks, gained new friends, a new home, and freedom from her brothers. Fantastic. I love a good underdog story, or in this case an undercat story.
I asked Riley if he liked the story and would like to read it again some time. He replied “yeah” with a big smile on his face.
I asked Riley what his favourite part of the story was and he replied “when the cat got into the ocean and caught the octopus”. He then went on to ask me what was my favorite part was, to which I replied ”when Kat triumphed over the mean pirate dogs”.
KAT: THE LEGEND OF GNAWBONIA reminded me a Dreamwork movie, but in print. The story and art had humour sprinkled throughout for the adults as well as the kids, and then there’s the resounding message of never give up.
I finally got to read this book and wished I read it a lot sooner.. An imaginative tale about a cat who triumphs over turmoil.. an amazing storyline, impressive illustrations.. a book that would definitely be fun for the whole family to read together.. I liked how the book was curated - very artistic and creative, parts were story, parts read like a graphic novel, other parts were a picture book. Suitable for a younger audience probably minimum age of 4-5 years old. With special thanks to the author for sending me a copy of this wonderful book!!!
This book was so fun, it was an experience, not just a book. Firstly, it's an illustrated novel about an adventuring cat. Secondly, part of the proceeds from the sale of the book goes towards organisations that promote ethical farming practices. Very cool.
The artwork was really fun in this, it was super bright and the colours were fantastic. But it was the small touches that made this book incredible. Firstly, there is a little mouse to find on every page which just made the book more interactive. I also really appreciated the puns and pop culture references hidden in the illustration which were very funny. If you spend the extra time on each page you'll find that there are so many little gems that make the book extra special.
It's a story of adventure and good triumphing evil. The characters are brave and clever and very very lovable. The plot was really great, I feel like anyone from middle grades up, would enjoy this. I personally would suggest older middle grades as there are some slightly brutal descriptions for younger kids - however this isn't a book aimed at kids and as an adult I would definitely get this book as a gift for my adult friends. This is the first book in the series and the world building was done really well.
The writing was a little clunky and abrupt in places but I think that just comes with writing such an action packed story in so few words.
I really enjoyed this book, it was a proper reading experience, which was really great. It covered important issues, the artwork was beautiful and the story was really fun. I had such a fantastic time reading this book and I cannot wait to see where this adventure goes next.
I love this book, fabulous for all ages and a fantastic gift for someone who has everything. My 3 nieces and all 5 of their children absolutely love the story and the graphic concept, especially when Daad reads it to them.
The writing is a little clumsy at times but it’s a great story and the artwork is superb. It’s fun to look at the little details (full of cat puns and other famous cats and dogs).
