Interesting tale

Although this story had an intriguing plot, I found myself unable to relate to the main character of Lucie. I wanted to like her, even came close a few times. In the end, she was just someone that I did not like.

At first, I wasn't sure I liked the story or any of the characters, but as I continued, I found it to be a very skillfully written book, with flawed characters who find out how to be better people. The h is a prisoner on a spaceship that crashes. She's guilty, tortured by her actions, and wants retribution. The H's are emotionless, barely living and when the h opens a vault, she gives them what she intended to keep. They come to life but it is not a quick fix, for any of them. They are all damaged, they try to do the right thing, but continue to suffer emotionally and physically. Very interesting writing and so wonderful to see the h and her lovers, learn the value of forgiveness. Very clever, slow burn story with wonderful characters.

The Valos of Sonhadra series is a Sci-Fi alien romance with each of the 9 books in the series being told by a different author. If you have a favourite author of the bunch and don't want to read them all don't worry, each book can be read as a standalone. The background story for each book is the same, the heroine for nefarious and various reasons has been locked away in a prison ship and being experimented on by scientists. The experimentation changes each of the heroines in some way, which becomes massively useful when the prison ship crash lands on an unfamiliar planet. That's when the heroine starts to meet the natives. Sonhadra, the planet they have landed on, is inhabited by different factions of valos. The valos all have unique abilities and appearances...and most of them haven't seen a female in a long long time.

Wins the Award for Best Redemption of the Series

I hadn't read Nancey Cummings before, but after reading Blazing I am definitely going to check out her other work. In some ways Lucie had it the worst, forced into helping the scientists experiment on the other prisoners, she is hated by her fellow prisoners and by the guards and scientists...and by herself.  So, when she crash lands on Sonhadra and fines a place with three hot (hehe) fire valos she wants to help the other survivors. I really liked this story, Cummings does a great job of imbuing the three heroes with character and gives Lucie a chance to redeem herself.

Overall thoughts: A great read, not as sexy as some of the others, but I liked Lucie's story.

Strange, but enjoyable.

It’s getting to be a bit much that each heroine, is coincidentally, mutated to accept each different alien species. Even still, I enjoyed the story, the characters & the romance.

I wasn't sure how lava aliens would work with a human heroine. Nancey Cummings made it make sense.

Lucie was a very flawed heroine who experienced quite a bit of personal growth during this story. Watching her gradually change and then make a decision to do the right thing, even if it was hard and not appreciated, made me like her more. What she endured at the hands of the doctors and guards on the prison ship reinforced her negative personality traits. Being freed by the crash didn't magically make her into her best version. She had to work for that.

Her three Valos - Asche, Ertale, and Sarsen - were all designed for different purposes. These design differences were also shown in their personalities and behaviors. If I only had to pick one, I think I'd choose Ertale but it would be a tough choice. Lucie doesn't have to choose, thankfully.

What happens with Halliday is shocking and I wish it had been sooner. The guards on the ship were almost all awful human beings.

I do like the epilogue. Will there be a sequel? I hope so!

Escorting her to the lab of the space station, the guard shoved Lucinda (“Lucie”) hard in the back, hoping to be amused by watching her fall. The test subject, Lydia, was brought in and Lucie prepped her. Lucie was a nurse, captured and blackmailed to do this for the prison doctor’s research; otherwise her brother and his family would be killed. The last experiment Dr. Sobin had tried, creating gills on the test subject, failed when the woman extracted water from the air and drowned. This latest one was to be turned into a human fireball – if she lived. Dr. Sobin was most definitely insane.

But as Lucie started to inject the serum as ordered, there was a severe shudder in the room and she accidentally stuck herself with the needle. When the lab shook again, she fell forward, further pushing the needle into herself and she felt the terrible burning. The entire lab was on fire, but she sat in the only non-burning spot and the fire didn’t seem to hurt her. However she had to get out before the fire suppression system locked her inside. She coughed and knew she needed air. But she couldn’t escape from the blazing room and fell unconscious.

Lucie woke up at the prodding of the cruel prison guard, Halliday. He told her they had crashed. He forced her to open the pharmacy cabinet and put all the meds he could sell in a sack.

Sarsen, Ertale and Asche, who were Fire Valos living on this planet, had seen what looked like a star falling from the sky. They thought it could be the cruel Creators returning and they needed to investigate. Their heartstones had been hollowed out of emotions and free will a thousand years ago, so they felt none of the emotions they should normally have felt of anger, rage, or dread. They had to return to the Forge when it was time to renew their fire or they would die. Then each went out to do their assigned task in case the Creators had actually arrived. But as Asche neared the forest, he knew something else, besides the usual beasts, was in there too.

When Lucie has to defend herself against Halliday, killing him, his blood caused the heartstone vault to open. She found 3 brightly-glowing crystals in a pile of darkened ones and when the stone creatures approached, she held out a crystal to each which they placed in the hole in their chest. By that action, Lucie restored the emotions and free will back into the heartstones of the alien men. But her blood also created a bond! All she wants is to return home to Earth and never leave! But now, they can’t let her go. Will she be able to convince them to let her leave? Or will they convince her she is finally where she belongs?

This book had some incredible world-building! Lucie was a very admirable character, doing what she had to do to survive. She cared about others, even though they might have doubted that. Even as a prisoner, she had been the corporation’s scapegoat and not really deserving of her sentence. Kindness was her first response. I loved the story line of this book also. It was very original and intriguing. I definitely recommend this book! It was an excellent read!

Book 3 in the valos of sonhadra series.

Lucie is a prisoner on The Concord, a flying prison, it houses some of the worst criminals from earth... it also shouted some of the most innocent and selfless people accused of crimes they did not commit.
Lucie is is not innocent, she made choices and suffered the consequences in the Concord for years... her penance for those choices is ongoing, with medical knowledge... she is made to assist the sick and twisted doctors aboard the Concord with their experiments on its captives... she is ‘lucky’..

Until the ship is dragged through a worm hole and crashes on a strange planet. Being dragged by a guard, Hamilton...as a shield from any beasties... he will use lucky till there is nothing left of her.

What he and lucky don’t expect is to meet 3 fire valos... when lucie accidentally restore their heart stones, they know she is part of their triad... for lucie, it’s another test. She has so much to atone for and her mind is set on focusing on making amends with the other survivors and getting back to earth. Even if it means going back to jail.

Fantastically written, as we do meet lucie in the other books, it was great to get her 'story' and perspective on what was happening on The Concord and how she got to be assisting the doctors. I knew it wouldnt be for stealing kittens...Dayumm!!!

I loved the interaction between lucie and her 3 very very different fire valos. A total mix bag of interactions and emotions was wrung out of me but by the end of the book the most resounding one was of happiness.

This one was far better than the other 2, imo. Not only were the characters likable, the author used lava men.... L A V A men... seriously unique.

I have read Paax by this author and another... not sure why I never marked it read but I did enjoy led it and I look forward to seeing what else this author has. After I finish this series.

this book was sorely lacking compared to the first 2. there were so many inconsistencies that I had to keep re-reading everything. the heroine left much to be desired. her personality was all over the place, I just gave up on trying to relate to her. the story plot itself was interesting and that's the only reason I gave this book a star at all.

Ooof~ Not sure what I'm unhappy about most: The bad story or the fact that I paid for this. Out of all the books in this series, only this author isn't on KU, and it wasn't worth it.

First, there were so many contradictions in the story. The author did a bad job of setting up the FMCs backstory. Kept most of the details tucked away. So at first, the FMC says they're "just a nurse", so I thought that's what she was. Then found it strange that she was involved in a big scandal of releasing a drug that wasn't fully approved that lead to deaths blah blah blah....but later she says she was a biochemist. Which, like, I guess those two can be connected but what a stretch. It doesn't help that the FMC didn't exhibit any signs of curiosity that I'd expect from someone in such a field who found themselves in a new world with new things to explore.

But the one that bothered me the most? We knew Sarsens (or w/e his name is) mate was dead. The FMC was told that the old mate was dead, as in did not survive the transformation, - not once but like at least twice - yet wakes up from her coma or w/e and is greeted by a female Valos. FMCs reaction? "omg what if this is Sarsens mate?! I can't share him!!" Seriously. SERIOUSLY. How stupid was that reaction. How ridiculous is that plot contradiction.

The -only- interesting thing about this book was -maybe- the smut....that you get to experience once at like 75% of the way through the book. Which was actually mediocre smut at best. The rest of the story is the FMC being unlikable, stupid, talking about crap that DOES NOT MATTER, and wanting to assuage her misplaced guilt. The few times "relationship stuff" happens we are told about it afterwards and in passing. Literally, the whole book is the FMC trying to save other humans or get home so how she somehow falls in love I don't even know. No chemistry, no relationship growth, no -real- story line.

Overall: No bueno. I saw she did another book for this same shared world, but I'll be skipping it. If it's anything like this one, it won't be worth paying for.

The Valos saga fires up

Lucie, the most unluckily know Lucky, has had it rough. Her parents died to a home fire when she was younger, duped by her company to be the scapegoat for a wrongful death lawsuit and then sentenced to life on an orbiting prison. A prison where, due to her medical knowledge, she becomes the unwilling accomplice to the inhumane experiments on the convicts. Dubbed Lucky by a sadistic guard she tries to keep her head down and ignore the horrors going on around her. Her scars are a partial shield from unwanted advances but leave her vulnerable to emotional attack. As the prison crashes she becomes the latest lab rat from an accidental needle stick. As fires consume the prison ship, she is left unscathed. Her nightmare guard finds her to use as a further guinea pig to test local flora and fauna for his safety and abandons her at the 1st sign of trouble. Namely, a giant alien monster. Rescued by 3 Vulcans (reference to volcanoes not the Star Trek race of beings) she accepts their help and worries about the other prisoners. Did anyone else survive? Will they accept her assistance?

Each new author has a tone. It works because each prisoner has their own story to tell, too. There were some inconsistencies. You could tell the 1st 2 authors collaborated more, but they told stories about siblings so that may be why. There were also some typos, small grammatical errors that threw me but an enjoyable read nonetheless. Lucie may have been unlucky, she may have been a victim and an unwilling accomplice but she didn't give up hope. She worried about the other prisoners and tried to help them.

Sarsen, Asche, Ertale, and Lucie

Lucinda "Lucie" was on the prison ship because she unintentionally killed sixteen people. She was a bio-engineer who worked for a pharmaceutical company. She did as her boss asked and lied on some of the testing paperwork which caused the deaths. On the ship, she had to assist the doctors with their experiments on the other prisoners. So she was hated by all.
She was helping to make a human torch out of one of the prisoners when they crashed. She accidentally invested herself with the serum.
One of the bully guards took her from the crash. He had mistreated her constantly but she couldn't do anything or her brother and his family on earth would be hurt. After the crash, he treated her the same. He tried to get to higher position up a mountain to use his radio to contact other survivors.
Sarsen, Asche and Ertale are rock like people who are made with fire. The creators did experiments on them and now they have to renew themselves in the forge of volcano fire or the will die. The Creator took their heartstones and placed them under the forge and only her blood could retrieve them. But the creators left a thousand years ago.
This was a good book that worked through the guilt felt by a couple of them. The fire calls did not have any feelings until the got their heartstones back. This is a slow growing relationship instead of insta-love, at least on Lucie's part.
I am truly enjoying the different authors grows on this world. I love Nancy Cummings other books as well. Give them a try, you will love them too.

I started this series a couple years ago. I liked the first two books, but I had a hard time continuing because it all started the same, and I already knew the first part. The ship goes through a wormhole and crashes and then they run from beasts. Anyway, I just had a hard time reading the beginning all over again.

So I figured enough time has passed, I wanted to find out what happened to some more of the girls on this prison vessel. This was about Lucie. She meets volcano men. They are sort of like rock men with internal fires. Sort of. Except they aren’t mad of rock, they just look like they are.

Anyway they take her in and keep her alive and help her try to find survivors.

That’s really all I have to say. This story was bad or great.

I didn’t really feel connected to the characters. I didn’t feel much for any of the characters except Ertale. And that was because he was mute. I was more attracted to his story, but it was never really explained.

I didn’t think the relationship between the 4 of them grew. It was just all the sudden there.

Eh.

This one fell in between books 1 and 2 for me. I thought it did a better job at world building and explaining the lore than book 1, but not as good of a job at character development as book 2.

I found Lucie’s character interesting as she wasn’t blameless, but wasn’t a bad person either. This book barely interacted with the planet and other type of Valos, but more with the other humans.

I wanted more character development with the guys and Lucie.

Steam: not a ton of scenes, a few were group but no crossing swords, I wanted more steam and spice

Let love blaze into your heart

Wow! I enjoyed this book. It was an interesting concept to think of these men as fire beings, and I certainly felt for them. To have merely an affinity and talent for fire, and then be changed into beings that need magma to continue to live was a very creative way to create alien beings. I also felt for Lucie. She really was the scapegoat. She wasn't the one to ultimately make the decision to put the drug on the market. Too bad she had to pay for greedy pharmaceutical company higher ups. And what she did in prison wasn't really her choice as well. Sure, it wasn't good, but if she didn't do it, they would have found someone else. At least she was willing to help others. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book, and I borrowed it through the Kindle Unlimited program too.

Ridiculously sweet heros

Lucie has done some bad things in her life. She never meant to hurt anyone, but it still got her to the Concord prison. When the ship crashes, a manipulative guard “helps” her escape, for a price. Forced to loot the ship, and denied being able to help any more survivors, Lucie and the guard make it off the ship. They come face to face with an alien world, and attempt to find a safe space. Lucie looses the guard and is protected by three alien lava-men. Lucie eventually confessed to her past wrongs, and tries to make amends with survivors of the concord as her aliens try to save their own race. Eventually everything comes together for a sappy sweet ending you can’t help but love.

Getting together

Lucky Lucky Lucky.... Oh boy do I have a lot to say. First I don't really blame her for her actions I got where she came from. However, her taking responsibility for her actions really did help me identify with her more and show compassion towards her struggle. I get why the others reacted the way they did and to some extent I agree to the anger. But to cut off your nose to spite your face is a little extreme. Lydia ended up proving to herself and others that she was a good person just the situation proved to be bad. I liked that she swallowed her pride and took the beating. The guys really supported her and helped her deal with her situation aboard the ship.

Overall okay

This was more a 3.5 story. I wasn't crazy about the main character. She was a real selfish and petty person for too much of the book and the fact that she just made the decision to change and did was a bit unrealistic. Change that drastic takes a lot of time and a lot of driving forces to create it. Anyways, it just missed the mark a little for me. It wasn't bad though and I was going to give the authors other series a try, but her books aren't on KIndle Unlimited they will remain unread by me. KU keeps me on a book budget so I know every month what I am spending. Anyway, this was worth reading if you are going with the series, but I wouldn't start here.

Remade with fire

Some parts were excellent others could have been refined.
Did not like how Lucie didn’t except responsibility for her actions but put blame on others. I believe we all are responsible and should hold ourselves for our actions and what we fail to do. In her case deifying orders of superior. As well her complying with ships doctor, etc.
Felt like the lava creatures made absolutely no sense, should have removed them.
Besides that I enjoyed the characters and story. Did wish the epilogue was a little smoother.
I am intrigued and want to know more of the people of the planet so will be reading others.

I enjoy her character driven stories.

I enjoyed the honest presentation of a negative character under a lot of stress. We are not at our best and sometimes just cannot forgive ourselves the crap we do to survive. I ended up really liking the h. The way the guys were written it was a given I would like them, and the world b okuilding made sense to me. We got the history of this alien world from traumatized survivors of slavery and genocide. It's realistic that they would have gaps in understanding. The story flowed for me and I found the character development engaging and deeply entertaining.

I started this series with this book, so I had no idea what I was coming into. The beginning was really boring, though. Nothing made sense and the writing was very technical as opposed to detailed or intriguing. After a few chapters, however, the writing became more appealing and I began to enjoy the story. Probably not enough to immediately go back and reread, but perhaps after a few months.

I would recommend this story to other readers and possibly look into other stories written by this author.

Good addition to series

A good addition to Valos of Sonhadra series. The blackmailing of the prisoners were a bit confusing to me. They were prisoners, wouldn’t torture and surviving be enough as motivators? The guard’s fixated obsessive behavior came off forced to me, but it moved the story along. I liked her three guys a lot and their love for each other was touching. I’m off to the next book!

DNF

Cummings is a Favorite author of mine to read, but this one was not one of my favorites. Lucie just did not have my empathy, and the Valid were not ones I really liked reading. It really was a miss for me.

One extra note, Lucie comments early on about her translator, but when she picks up the native language, she's constantly asking how, going beyond that saying "that's not possible." I didn't see any grammatical errors, but flow and consistency needs some attention.

Blazing

Loved the Valos men and Lucie became a better person at the end. Love love this world with all the different types of Valos people. Wonderful continuation from the first two books. Some differences noted but otherwise the cohesiveness of the books was great. Now I am on to the next in this series. I would recommend this book.

Entirely Enjoyable

So creative! Fire Valos renewed in magma. A city built in an active volcanic caldera. Methane creatures. And love, acceptance, unity. These are the elements that make this story a unique reading experience, along with the yum of physical love. Such a sense of contentment upon finishing!

This was cute.

MC was flawed which I loved but I had to take 2 stars off for those first 60 pages cuz boy... did they drag

(If she wasn't acting dumb about the serum in her body, she was acting dumb about halliday-- if she wasn't acting dumb about Him she was acting dumb about going back to earth)

All that time wasted on a bad guy&her feeling sorry for herself could have been used on the romance imo.

The harem was fantastic&funny&I enjoyed them together.

I'll give it a 3.6 or 3.7 out of 5 🤓
