Daisy James loves writing stories with strong heroines and swift-flowing plot-lines. She especially likes to create sunshine-filled settings in exotic locations - the Caribbean, Tuscany, Cornwall, Provence - so she can spend her time envisioning her characters enjoying the fabulous scenery and sampling the local food and drink.

When not scribbling away in her peppermint-and-green summerhouse (garden shed), she spends her time sifting flour and sprinkling sugar and edible glitter. She loves gossiping with friends over a glass of something fizzy or indulging in a spot of afternoon tea - china plates and teacups are a must.

5☆ A Scrumptious  Feel good read

Sunshine and Secrets is the Perfect feel good read that will leave you feeling very hungry and wanting to run off to St Lucia and join the Paradise Cookery School.

I adore Daisy James books and when I see Sunshine and Secrets I couldn't wait to get my hands on a copy. It has 3 of my favourite things, A gorgeous cheeky Pup, Scrumptious mouthwatering food and Chocolate. What more could a girl want!

When Celebrity Cookery book writer Claudia Croft needs help overseeing her brand new project the Paradise Cookery School.
There was only one person ideal for the job  Millie - a Cordon Bleu trained Chef. Set up by her Sister Jen.

So off Millie goes to mend her broken heart and set off on an adventure.
But things don't quiet go according to plan with plenty of mishaps and mayhem.
Arriving in a liquid weather rain storm as the locals call it things don't get off to a great start.

I adored all of the characters I loved Millie and Ella's relationship. Ella has been sent by Claudia to help Millie with the recipes and the locals. Ella is a force to be reckoned with. But has a heart of gold.

Sunshine and Secrets has plenty of fun, Frolics and Mayhem. A sprinkling of romance, lasting friendships, Scrumptious mouthwatering food, memorable Characters, Mystery, a cheeky loveable pup.

It really is the Perfect feel good read.
So snuggle up and be prepared to be whisked away to the breathtaking St Lucia and to be part of the Paradise Cookery School.
But be warned... DO NOT READ ON AN EMPTY TUMMY!! You will get the rumbles!

Thank you to Canelo for this copy which I reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

Millie Harper is at the airport waiting to check in for her flight to Nice in France, when she receives a phone call from her sister Jen. An opportunity has arisen to oversee the renovations of ‘The Paradise Cookery School’ in St. Lucia, as the owner, TV Chef Claudia, has broken her leg and Jen has put Millie forward for the job.

Unsure at first, Millie agrees to go. All she has to do is go to the Caribbean and make sure the workmen get the kitchen ready on time for the guests, as well as taste testing the new recipes. Unfortunately nothing is ever that simple, starting with a delayed flight and arriving to a downpour, in which she has to walk to the villa as the taxi driver refuses to take her all the way.

This is just the start of what turns out to be an eventful time for Millie!

‘Sunshine and Secrets’ is a fun, energetic novel that whisks you away to a gorgeous sunshine filled island and has you engaged in one of the most interesting characters lives I’ve had the pleasure of reading this year.

This is a book for the senses. Not only are you dazzled by the St. Lucian scenery, you are also treated to some of the most delicious food I’ve read about. There was definitely plenty of mouth-watering moments.

It was a pure joy to read, and is as good on the inside as the outside looks.

This is a heartwarming, tasty treat from Daisy James. There’s beautiful imagery painting pictures of the location, characters and events, bringing the story vividly to life in the reader’s imagination. One of my favourite examples is:

"Here in St Lucia, the Pitons wore nature’s cloak of dappled sunlight, their lush flanks shimmering in the breeze like an emerald waterfall.”

WOW - hope that helps you see what I mean!

Millie Harper has had a dramatic break up and is still suffering from the fallout when she’s off to holiday with her Mum. Whilst waiting at the airport she is contacted by her sister and asked to travel to St Lucia instead to oversee the setting up of ‘The Paradise Cookery School’. This is a chance in a lifetime and she jumps at the opportunity. However, being dropped off by taxi at the bottom of a hill to climb to the School in the ‘liquid sunshine’ makes this a somewhat soaking wet introduction to the locale! Then get ready for the local workmen to have a somewhat relaxed idea about actually working and you’re in for some hilarious, heartwarming events in a superb setting and with many fantastic characters. Add in the mystery of appearing and disappearing crates of cocoa pods and the drama filled encounters with the estate manager and she’s in for an interesting stay! Can she get the school ready on time? What is happening to the cocoa pods? Is she ready for a new romance?

I thoroughly enjoyed escaping into this luscious story. The descriptions of food had my mouth watering, the beautiful landscape had me dreaming of warmer climes (it is snowing here at the moment!) and the mystery was perplexing! There are also elements of suspense, just to add to this delectable recipe for a fun read set in paradise. I thoroughly enjoyed it and can’t wait to read more in this series and by this author!

I requested and received a copy of this novel via NetGalley. This is my honest review after choosing to read it.

Millie lost her dream job after her boyfriend broke her heart. She worked as a chef at a Michelin-starred restaurant and he was her colleague. Food is her biggest passion, but she couldn't stay at the restaurant. Because she needed friends more than anything she now works in a small patisserie in London instead. Her sister thinks Millie deserves a break and arranges a two week job on the stunning St. Lucia. Millie has to direct the kitchen installment and recipe testing for the new business of a famous chef who's temporarily incapacitated. She's starting a cookery school at her villa, but can't be there to oversee the work that has to be done. It's the ideal job for Millie and she gets to spend time checking out a beautiful Caribbean location.

The villa is at a cocoa plantation and chocolate is an important element of the menu. Millie has help from a local chef, so she can learn more about the cuisine of the island. The estate also comes with a manger, Zach. His welcome isn't kind, but when Millie gets to know him she finds he's actually more helpful and friendly than she thought. Cocoa pods are disappearing. Who's taking them and why? While Millie is trying to solve this mystery, she's desperately encouraging the staff to finish the kitchen on time. Will she pull it off or will she fail at her job, so everything is in chaos when it's time for the first guests to arrive?

Sunshine & Secrets is a wonderful delicious story. Millie is a talented chef and I absolutely loved her passion for food. It was incredibly fun to read about her creations, the way she tastes things and her interest in recipes and ingredients. She's a true chef, which is something that completely endeared me when I read her story. She has a broken heart, but sunshine, making new friends, delectable food, lots of Caribbean cocktails and gorgeous men are helping her heal really well. I loved the sunny atmosphere of the story, while the mystery of the disappearing pods, political issues and finding love is giving it a nice amount of depth as well. Millie has a fabulous adventure and I enjoyed every single page of her marvellous journey.

Daisy James has a great heartwarming writing style. It's clear she knows what she's writing about and that makes her story very fascinating. I was entertained, charmed and captivated. Sunshine & Secrets made me smile and I was curious, so couldn't stop reading, which is an ideal combination. Daisy James combines this with a magnificent setting that she describes in a fantastic vivid way. I love it when a story brings so much joy and can't praise Daisy James's feelgood factor enough. She's found the exact right balance between cheerful and serious and the result is a terrific story I highly recommend.

I loved every page of this book.
Millie takes a last minute job to oversee the finishing touches to a new venture. The Paradise Cookery school in St Lucia. The owner has had an accident and is unable to get the school up and running before the first guests are due to have an out of this world culinary experience.
She is in charge of a group of builders who don't have the 'urgency' gene in their repertoire. She also has to test the new recipes with a wonderful sounding character Ella. I wished I could have sat in on their practice sessions, enjoying the delicious sounding food and enjoying a lovely new friendship. There is also the hint of romance in the air and the setting just makes you lose yourself totally in a wonderful new world of the Caribbean whilst suffering the frosty weather we've been experiencing here. I was sad to leave them!

Sunshine and Secrets was a great story and it made want to hop on a plane and go to St Lucia. She told us a heartwarming story and I felt like I was there in that beautiful country. Who wouldn’t want to have the chance to fly over there and help with a cooking job?? Me me me! (That is, if I could cook more than the basic stuff i can cook now. Lol) Thank you for this complimentary copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Sunshine and Secrets by Daisy James is a wonderful, feel-good read. I couldn't resist it. Being auto approved by Canelo, I downloaded it immediately and was taken in by the excitement of starting somewhere new and the travel bug. It is a read/listen you will not want to finish!.

Sunshine and Secrets captures the beauty of the Caribbean. Despite never having been to St Lucia, I could practically taste the food and rum, the descriptions were so vivid. I did not like Zach at first, but warmed to him as the story progressed. I liked Ella a lot, and also Millie.

In Sunshine and Secrets, Daisy James creates a wonderful portrait of what life can be like if you take risks, and shows that there is often more than one route to happiness.

Despite the small cast of characters, they are extremely well fleshed-out and realistic, and I felt like I knew them well by the end of the book. In fact, everyone in the book helped to represent the reality of life on a small paradise island.

The book sparked welcome memories of a holiday I had to Barbados, and I was pleased to be able to draw on my own experiences of the Caribbean climate, customs food and people.

I did feel that some of the secrets and scandals could have been explored more, and that the book's ending was quite abrupt. That said, I can see scope for another book on St Lucia with the same characters, and hope there will be one! The book has such an undeniably wonderful, feel-good, "holiday" feel that you will want to read it all year round. I wanted to listen to it again as soon as I'd finished! Sunshine and Secrets deserves 5 sparkling stars!

The cover is beautiful, too!

Thanks to Daisy James and Canelo for my ARC in exchange for an honest and voluntary review.

At long last, I've read my first (but definitely not last) Daisy James book. If ever a book should be read on holiday, it is Sunshine and Secrets but for those of us who don't have sun-friendly skin it's a perfect getaway to distant lands we can only dream of from the comfort of our favourite armchair.

Amelia (known as Millie) Harper has just the right thing to take her mind off her broken heart: an opportunity to set up The Paradise Cookery School on the Caribbean island of St Lucia. As if Millie's wet welcome to St Lucia wasn't funny enough, her drenching leaves her with big hair akin to Monica Geller when the Friends go to Barbados. Picturing Millie like that was enough to get me sniggering like a schoolgirl.

description

As well as trying out gorgeous recipes, Millie has to try to get the local laid-back workmen to stick to their schedule, which is easier said than done with the sun blazing down and the ripples of the swimming pool causing a temptation that's impossible to resist. Local cook, Ella, and Estate Manager, Zach, are on hand to help Millie and, after a stand-offish start with Zach, Millie finds her pulse racing - Zach could be the perfect cure for her broken heart.

What really surprised me about Sunshine and Secrets was the added mystery of the disappearing cocoa pods. Rather than succumb to the easy-going pace of the Caribbean vibe, it made me look at the characters a little more closely as I tried to gather clues.

Sunshine and Secrets is so full of sunshine that I needed my Factor 50 on just to read it. I felt as if I was on St Lucia with Millie, sitting drinking an Andy's Blast cocktail in the beachside Purple Parrot cocktail bar. Naturally, I didn't want to leave, although in real life I would have been burnt to a crisp!

I chose to read an ARC and this is my honest and unbiased opinion.

This has been a treat of a read! Full of fun, romance and those feel good vibes that make the world a happier place!

Millie isn't in a happy place as she's recovering from a broken heart. But she has her love of cookery to help distract her. Her sister Jen is also on hand to try and help her move on and what better way than springing a surprise on her at the airport! She thought she was going to spend time with her mother, but Jen has recommended her for some work in St Lucia to help out the celebrity cookbook writer Claudia Croft who is setting up a Paradise Cookery School over there and needs some help. How could she say no?!

When she arrives over there she's quite low on confidence and is a little daunted by what she faces but with stunning views and friendly locals, she soon settles and finds herself enjoying life once more! Even the daily downpours don't seem to dampen her spirit.

The estate manager, Zach Barker, is there to watch over here and their first few meetings don't go well but it's nice to see how their friendship develops despite their clashes.

Even with some mysterious goings on happening that seem set to test her , she finds the challenge she faces with the school is just what she needed and her love of cookery is easy for all to see and a helpful way into the hearts of the local community!

This was so much fun to read with a lovely cast of characters in a paradise setting!

A dazzling foodie escape in St. Lucia!

Another 5 star novel from Daisy James. Packed full of flavours, scenery and scents to tantalise every one of the senses, Sunshine & Secrets is also a page-turner of a romance. Add to that a pinch of grit and drama and you have a story that's as sumptuous as a Purple Parrot Mojito. To find out what one of those is, you'll just have to read the book!

Heading off on holiday with her mum, Millie is looking forward to her break until her sister Jen ropes her in to help author and creator of The Paradise Cookery School, Claudia after she falls I'll. So, pastry chef Millie diverts her travel to St Lucia and her time to oversee kitchen unit fittings, chocolate making classes with the assistance of fellow chef Ella and grounds master Zach, whom teases her like crazy since her accidental first encounter with him.

All the time whilst creating her delicious bakes, with all locally sources fruit and cocoa beans, it's a therapy of sorts to her mind and thinking as she hashes over her past with Luke and their more simple life before the shocking revelation came and turned her life into what it is now, living in London back home while taking chances abroad.

With secrets to discover and uncover, new friends and a fresh chance at love, we follow Millie through her heartache to possibly discover her future and further adventure awaiting her.

A perfect summer read and full of dreamy sweet treats it's enough to keep you hooked as I devoured this book in one sitting!

The story flowed and the plot kept you guessing about the couples who would work out as well as if the actual cookery school would get up and running in time, a gripping treat.

Perfect for fans of Jenny Colgan and Cathy Bramley.

Many thanks to the publishers for allowing me to review this book for them!

Tomorrow morning, I plan on introducing you to the delights of Castries market. You need to touch, squeeze, sniff, as well as taste the sensational produce we St Lucians take for granted before we begin to test out their ability to merge with the spices in our recipes.

After experiencing heartbreak, Michelin-starred chef Amelia Harper eagerly accepts a job to oversee the establishment of The Paradise Cookery School by the famous celebrity cookery book writer Claudia Croft. She leaves London and her painful memories behind, travelling to a picturesque cocoa plantation in St. Lucia. However, the idyllic setting presents unexpected challenges. With just two weeks to complete the kitchen installation, missing cocoa pods, and laid-back island workers, Millie realises she needs assistance. Enter Zach Baxter, the gruff yet charismatic estate manager, who is more than willing to share his insights. But he is friendly, organised, reliable and sarcastic. As their fiery personalities clash, they must stay focused on completing the cookery school on time. I liked the relations and friendships narrated in this novel - Millie, Jen, Zach, Ella, Henri, Lottie and Dylan.

Some lines from this book -

However, reality always lurked in the wings, waiting to push its unwelcome nose into her fantasies.

We mould our own destinies, formulate our own dreams. If we don't chase them with single-minded determination, how are they going to come true?

Have you followed your dreams? I have. But don't go thinking it's been an easy route. The path to contentment never runs smoothly. It's scattered with boulders the size of pumpkins!

Everyone is searching for their own version of paradise, but for different reasons and with myriad expectations. It takes a long time to understand the truth – that change is internal.

Before you can fly off to new beginnings, you first have to jump! Show the world what you're capable of. Don't let yourself be defined by one unfortunate incident months ago. I know you can do this. I know you'll be sensational.

This is the first book by Daisy James that I've read but it certainly has a winning combination; what could be better than combining food and the Caribbean? The setting is exquisite and even though I've never visited Saint Lucia, this book transported me there and to be honest I was sorry to leave. The descriptions of the food are just as delicious and gave me cravings for the rest of the day. Of course, there is romance too as well as drama in the form of a last- minute rush to complete the renovation of the kitchens before the guests arrive. A lovely escapist read!

This is what I'd describe as good old fashioned light-hearted simple reading.

What Daisy James has created is a story that is heart warming and entertaining. An easy read that is filled with humour, romance and good vibes.

This is one of those novels that you want to take on holiday with you and read whilst relaxing by the pool. There is a cast of quirky characters with a believable dialogue that will have you chuckling away.

I dare you to read this book without a smile on your face!

Thank you to Netgalley, the author and the Publisher, Canelo for this review copy given in exchange for an honest review.  Also thank you to Ellie from Canelo for organising the blog tour.

Chef, Millie Harper, is offered a last minute job overseeing the setup of The Paradise Cookery School in St Lucia.  It should have been her sister going, but unable to go she asks Millie to take her place.  Millie, newly heartbroken and on her way to visit her mother, figures she has nothing to lose!  When she arrives on the beautiful Caribbean island, she realises things are going to be as easy as she thought.  There is a lot more work that is needed to be done and she also has to contend with the Estate Manager, Zach Baxter, who she seems to have got off on the wrong foot with!  Can she get the cookery school finished on time?

What better time of year to read a book based on a sunny Caribbean Island!  To be honest though, when Millie arrives she does seem to have arrived during a heavy rainfall, which is definitely more like the British weather!  The name of the cookery school is also so enticing – The Paradise Cookery School – you can understand why Millie decided to go!  Millie’s character is lovely!  Being a Michelin star chef, Millie is more than capable of organising the completion of the cookery school.  She does, though, seem to run into problems with the lack of urgency of the St Lucian workmen and clashing with the Estate Manager.

I have to admit, you know where this story is going to go right from the beginning, but it was a delightful story getting there!  It was a nice quick read with wonderful characters and a beautiful setting – you couldn’t really ask for anything more from a book!  It would appear that this is the first book in the series, so I certainly look forward to the next instalment!

What a fab start to a brand new series! I couldn't help but lose myself in 'Sunshine & Secrets' straight away - the storyline was so appealing, whetting my appetite as much as a big slice of cake.

Millie really annoyed me at first because she came across as such a wet blanket, making some of the other characters seem more of a main character than she was. Millie did end up changing my opinion a little bit towards the end, but I really do hope she finds more inner strength as the series progresses.

Aside from that, I thoroughly enjoyed Zach and Millie's banter! It kept making me laugh out loud, making the vibe of the storyline even more relaxed than before. I thought the story was very well paced, full of the right amount of drama, laughter, and diversity to keep my attention until the very end.

My only big issue with 'Sunshine & Secrets' was the fact that it had to end! I was so getting into what was happening with the cookery school and learning more about Zach, when the book decided to end - how rude!! I cannot wait to read the next instalment of this series, and I really do feel that Daisy James has started her new serial off with a bang or, in Millie's case, several dozen cupcakes!

Such a cosy, relaxing and colourful story to tickle your taste buds, whet your appetite, and get you prepared for even more tantalising recipes as the series progresses. Love it

It seems an odd time of year to be reading a book set in the Caribbean, but I guess with the snow outside a burst of sunshine is most welcome! Sunshine and Secrets begins as Millie Harper has fled a failed romance and her dream job to live quietly as a pastry chef. Her sister is having none of this and manages to get her a job testing recipes for a new celebrity cookery school on a cocoa plantation in St Lucia – despite many reservations, Millie agrees.

From then on, this book is a whirlwind of exotic locations and descriptions of spices that you can almost taste, and a lovable cast of characters who both inspire and infuriate Millie in equal measure. From beach bums to love-sick gap year students, there is definitely a character that everyone will love, in addition to a sneakily included mystery plot that will keep you guessing.

Alongside the romantic storyline, I loved the foodie aspects of this book. There are lots of descriptions of the recipes Millie is testing, and traditional St Lucian food, plus in the scenes where Millie is cooking or baking, and when she explores the market, you can almost see and smell the spices and cocoa – definitely mouth-watering!

Ultimately, this book is just good fun and it would be a great addition to your summer reading pile – but whatever the weather, it’s guaranteed to bring a bit of sunshine into your day.

Well this was a sunny delightful read! Food and sunshine what more could you want?

You always know what you’re getting from Daisy James and her delightful books but there’s always a few surprises as well and this book set in St Lucia was a lovely surprise!
description

link: Visit the locations in the novel

I was salivating throughout much of the book – well that name – the Paradise Cookery School sounds delicious in itself. I’ve never been to the island of St Lucia but with the descriptions in the book I did feel I was there . The heat, the food…oh my the food, and the sun and promise of romance was just delightful!

Daisy James always delivers on a great story and sumptuous locations and this is no exception. Characters were funny and well developed with some funny quirks I smiled at. I particularly enjoyed getting to meet Binks the dog.

Yes – this little jaunt to St Lucia really made me want to start speaking in nothing but French, wearing flip flops and eating cake. Warmly recommended!

I do love a good location in a novel, and that is exactly what enticed me to want to read this book.  St Lucia is the most luscious of back drops for this story, and it provides exactly the kind of escapism that both Millie Harper and the reader need.  Set on a hilltop cocoa plantation, you can imagine the greenery, the warmth and you can almost smell that amazing aroma that you only find on a Caribbean island following the afternoon rainfall.  Daisy James captures all of this perfectly, and it really does add to the story.

Now to the story itself. Millie Harper is heartbroken, and despite being a Michelin-starred chef, she finds herself working in a little patisserie in London as she tries to forget her heartache.  When the opportunity arises to oversee the set up of The Paradise Cookery School, a new cookery school being set up by the celebrity cookery book writer Claudia Croft, Millie jumps at the chance to leave behind her those painful memories, if only for a couple of weeks.

The two weeks that follow involve sun, rain, some very relaxed workmen, a lot of cooking and the mystery of cocoa pods disappearing from the plantation. Millie finds herself working far harder than she expected whilst trying to ensure that The Paradise Cookery School is in a position to be the roaring success she knows it can be. Plus, what would a novel set in such a beautiful location be if there wasn't a hint of romance thrown in for good measure?  With both Zach, the estate manager of the plantation and the handsome Marc capturing Millies attention, could there be romance on the cards for her?

I really enjoyed Sunshine and Secrets.  There was beautiful scenery, a great main character that was definitely relatable and just enough intrigue and mystery to make you want to keep reading.  It is the perfect story to read whilst laying on a warm beach, or cuddled up under a blanket whilst its snowing outside, imagining the warm St Lucian sun on your face.  I highly recommend this novel if you're looking for a little escapism as it will draw you in and get you dreaming of balmy days in St Lucia.  I will definitely be reading the next instalment in this series, Confetti and Confusion, as soon as I can get a copy!

Thank you to Daisy James, Canelo and Netgalley for providing me with a copy of this novel in exchange for my honest review.

This is a perfect romance after a heavier read. I've been in the mood for more romance this year and this one totally fit the bill. The food descriptions were amazing, and I was sad that there weren't recipes to go along with them! I am excited to see that this is the first book in a series and I will definitely be reading the next one to find out what happens to Millie and the Paradise Cookery School!

As always, I love a new Daisy James book. And this one just looked so inviting I couldn't resist! The book is set in the stunning St Lucia and if you don't finish this book wanting to visit this place then you are crazy! It sounds absolutely beautiful and I really loved reading it.

I didn't realise at first that this novel was going to be quite so short but I believe that there are different parts following up so hopefully we hear more about this story! The cover is totally beautiful and extremely inviting. I love the bright blue sea, the pretty flowers either side and the huge house in the background of course! It all stands out and makes you want to read it.

Onto the story itself, it follows main character Millie, who was asked to overlook some building and recipe work at a new up and coming cookery school: The Paradise Cookery School. As Millie soon learns, it's not plain sailing and there's enough action to rival a mystery novel! It was totally gripping and I couldn't put it down. I always love reading Daisy's novels but for me I think that this was one of her best.

There was quite a bit of humour involved and I loved that. It made me smile throughout and made me want to read more. I loved getting to know the new characters, they were really interesting and seemed really friendly. The location is of course another reason why I enjoyed this story so much. The descriptions of the weather, the sea, the forest, all sounded so beautiful and I was tempted to look up holidays!

Of course, one of the very main reasons why I loved this book was - obviously - the food. The food! It all sounded mouth-wateringly good and so delicious! If you're not hungry when you start reading then you will be by the time you're finished! Millie and new friend Ella had to do menu tasting and this just sounded sooooo nice! The dishes and recipes which Millie and Ella were creating were very high-class (I didn't know what half of them were but they equally sounded lovely) and I enjoyed reading and learning about foods and spices.

It was a brilliant way to start a new series and was really enjoyable. I can't recommend this book by the lovely Daisy James enough. And if you don't believe me, I'm sure the other bloggers on this blog tour will manage to convince you!

I loved the characters in the book and I have to say that I thought that the plot was excellent and it is a very easy book to read and now I really want to visit St Lucia! It is heart warming, entertaining and I loved it.

Four stars from me, really enjoyable read and highly recommended!

Enjoyable story but found parts of the descriptions a little long winded. Ideal book for those who want an easy read.

Travel to St. Lucia to escape all your problems in this book and enter the Caribbean and all its life and food. That’s what main character, Millie did! She escaped the fact she has a broken heart after newly breaking up with her boyfriend Luke. The original destination was Nice, France, until such a great opportunity in St. Lucia, she was persuaded not to pass up on came her way.
There is a new cookery school is opening up at Claudia’s villa in the hills overlooking the bay at Soufrière in the south of St Lucia. She won’t be alone though as she meets other people inhabiting the island. The characters are all well written and really fit well into this book. They are all characters that I found I wanted to read about and I am sure other readers will want to as well.

I love the descriptions of the setting and the warmth that oozes from them as they will take readers on a journey in such a way that anyone can delight in being able to picture themselves there and basque in the warm glow. There’s also tenderly written romance and broken hearts and thoughts of past love in the paradise that is St. Lucia. There are also twists and turns along the way and paradise isn’t all what it always seems to be as well as lots of food.

Firstly, when readers encounter the new cookery school, the kitchen has to be installed and there are emails that need tending to with what is to be expected. The emails are well thoughtout in their font as it is different from the rest of the type in the main story, so they stand-out well.

There are plenty of food and recipes being created within this book, which makes it different and quite fun, especially if you like reading or eating food, or both. The food is so well written that any reader will be able to imagine what it could actually taste like, its a treat for the senses.

It isn’t just people who work around the cookery school and the cocoa plantation, which is also owned by Claudia. There is also Henri, who is a journalist in St. Lucia, when readers meet this character. He would enlighten any reader as he talks about whatelse goes on this seemingly paradise island, such as drugs and corruption. It’s clever of the author to point this out I reckon and it prevents the story from being whimsical as well as informing readers that all is not always as it first seems on this island as there is a darker side to the paradise backdrop.

This is an excellent, effortless read to escape into for awhile, where the story glides across the pages at a good pace. It’s warm, it’s scenic, it’s got some twists as secrets are uncovered, it has emotion. It is also a delicious read with all that food, to make you end up with an appetite of your own. With all that going on, it’s a well thought out, well written and paced book that is thoroughly enjoyable. I very much recommend this book.

Heartbroken Millie Harper is about to set off to France for a holiday with her mum, when sister Jen asks if she’ll fly to St. Lucia and oversee the installation and recipe testing for new cookery school for famous chef Claudia Croft instead. Being a Michelin-starred chef Millie is keen to develop her skills and jumps at the chance to spend time learning about a different cuisine and in such a fabulous location, what could be more perfect.
Millie’s idea of a tropical paradise is soon ruined when she’s left in the pouring rain on arrival and then met by grumpy estate manager Zach Baxter who doesn’t offer her the warmest of welcomes. With kitchen fitters that have a much more laid-back way of working than Millie is used too, missing cocoa pods and disastrous dates can Millie get the cookery school up and running in time.
Sunshine and Secrets is a book filled to the brim with delicious food descriptions, in fact 70% of the story probably revolves around food so if you’re not a fan then this is maybe not the book for you. I love food so really enjoyed all the food descriptions, especially those relating to chocolate, only problem was it left me very hungry. I also loved all the descriptions of St. Lucia, Daisy James has done an excellent job bringing this part of the world alive for me.
Millie was the perfect main character for this story as her passion for food is so contagious that she had everyone around her excited to be involved with the school and the chocolate recipes. This passion helps Millie to gain confidence and with more than one handsome man showing her some interest it’s the perfect place for her to forget about her heartbreak from ex-boyfriend Luke.
This was quite a short read with many characters being introduced, perhaps too many as most of the book is spent getting to know the characters and the main action in the story takes place quite near the end and felt very rushed. I was also a little disappointed with the ending as the story just kind of stopped. I think if the book had been a little longer with the ending drawn out a bit more it would have made the book more enjoyable for me. It does leave the story open for a follow-on book though which I would like to read.
Sunshine and Secrets is the perfect escapist read to a tropical paradise where food, flirting and fun are part of everyday life and is a great book to welcome summer into your life.
Thank you so much to Canelo and Netgalley for sending me a copy to review and inviting me to be part of the blog-tour.

I loved this read as Millie Harper hops a plane and heads to London to get The Paradise Cookery School running! Her sister’s friend has asked Millie to take her place as she has broken her leg and is in the hospital. Millie has just broke up with her boyfriend and needs a change of scenery so she jumps at the chance at going to a beautiful place for somewhat of a vacation/work holiday! She tests recipes with Ella a friend of the owner of the Cookery School. They have a blast trying chocolate recipes and tasting their baked goods. She has the experience of a lifetime in St. Lucia !

She has two weeks to get it up and running, while the staff hired tend to show up late and sleep when they are supposed to be working! St Lucia in the Caribbean is where the story takes place, where it is so beautiful but at the same time it rains every day at approximately the same time. She arrives in the pouring rain and is drenched by the time she finds her condo, the cab driver drops her off at the top of the hill and she has to make her own way thru this rain! She wonders if she made a big mistake coming to this place to work...Her first encounter with Zach the grounds keeper isn’t the best, but they make up for that later thru the story. She makes friends with the locals and has a great holiday/work trip in this beautiful place! In the end she sets out to do what she came for and all is well! Take a chance on this book you won’t be disappointed!

We are introduced to Millie rushing to the airport thanks to her friend and colleague Jen to make a flight whilst reassuring her sister Jen she will make it on time. She is asked to run a cookery school as the main woman Claudia is awaiting an operation. The cookery school is in St Lucia (a country in the Caribbean, one of the Winward islands) I googled it and it looks like paradise. So Millie is at the airport, having to go from a planned airplane ride to a new destination to house sit initially as she thought she would not be running the cooking school. I would love if that type of situation happened to me!

Oh my. The taxi man’s name is my blog name without the proper pronunciation; Clavie whilst I am CLaVie, as in C’s Life. When Millie arrives at the villa we meet Zach the estate manager who is full of personality and wit. We then get to find out a lot about coco beans – which is interesting however it’s a lot of information about a topic when I just want to get on with the summery light plot.

Warning, do not read this novel whilst you’re starving for some food as it goes into details of delicious combinations that makes my stomach more hungry.

However this novel did not hold my attention enough to properly be engaged with it, therefore it gets one point for actually being a holiday read as I did like the idea of it.
