Aveline got what she deserved. An unlucky thief, she’s been caught and imprisoned on the Interstellar Penitentiary System station. For the rest of her natural life, she’ll be an unwilling subject in whatever experiments the psychopathetic Earth government scientists choose to use her for. But Aveline’s luck is about to change. When a wormhole opens near the space station, Aveline is sucked out of hell and into a world she never knew existed—Sonhadra. And she’s not alone. Locked away by a species known only as The Creators, the Ventos, a race of air elementals, have lived a half-life—alive but unaware of the passage of time, or who they are. Until Aveline arrives. The last four Ventos in Sonhandra, Aaddhar, Branesh, Ettan, and Thanasis, are awake now, and Aveline holds their hearts in her thieving little hands. Faced with a world utterly changed and unfamiliar, they decide to forge a new one. Together, they’ll create world of freedom and joy, and if the five of them are the only ones who enjoy it, that’s fine with the Ventos. But Aveline didn’t arrive alone. The person at the heart of her downfall, the one who pushed her onto the path that led to loss and pain, has fallen through the wormhole as well. And she threatens everything Aveline and her Ventos have created. Will they be strong enough to survive the threat they now face? Or will the Ventos be sent back into oblivion and Aveline into hell?

Confusing but okay

The beginning was okay, same beginning theme of ladies being used as science experiments. Then the crash...that’s where it became confusing. I’m guessing it was supposed to be an amazing description of the world building and another amazing buildup of how she meets her future men, but I was plain confused. Couldn’t visualize what the author had written out. Once she ran off, I finally got an understanding of what was being said and described. Was able to finish the book without confusion from that point on. To be honest, I push on and finish only because it was a part of the series. The books before was good (IMO) and I’m hoping the ones following will be good reads too.

It was okay, even though it was a short read, it felt much loooooonger. The book started promising (a brave, tortured heroine meets 4 pleasant guys), but it was all hot air (literally!). One detail bugs me: I just do not understand why the brothers call Aveline a warrior? A survivor – yes, but a warrior – why? I do not get it.

All backstory and world building

The author spent a lot of time describing the world and what was going around the characters. Generally, I would say that’s a good thing. However, it was too much in this case.

Each chapter seemed to be dedicated to describing uninteresting things that didn’t move the story along at all. For example, chapter 2 focused on wind blowing on and around a building structure. I couldn’t help but wonder when the chapter would end or something interesting would happen.

Other things didn’t make sense... like air creatures becoming tangible or intangible at will but having to worry about manually taking off or putting on tangible clothes.

I’m also not sure how penises came into play. The air spirits had never seen humans before. They were unfamiliar with the inner workings. Yet they appeared to be fully functioning human males when they took of their extremely tangible clothes to lay around.

Despite the short length, this was a long boring read. I probably should have tossed it as a DNF.

Nice story, entertaining enough but not as much as the previous ones.

The Valos were interesting characters but I feel like they lacked something to give them more depth. Aveline was a sweet and meek character. The only thing that was frustrating about her is the fact that she held one to the notion that she was a criminal and didn't deserve any happiness. Girl ! You were just a thief and you only stole for survival and others. You didn't hurt or kill anyone , so the fact that in her mind she deserved what was done to her was just plain stupid in my opinion.

The fact that the Valos called her a warrior was a bit far fetch. Survivor ? Yes. Warrior ? Far from it... but anyway...

ALL IN ALL,
* Would I recommend this book ? Not really but it passes the time.

* Will I reread it ? No.

* Will I continue this series ? Absolutely. Just because some authors stories don't fully satisfy me as much as the others doesn't mean I have to give up on the series. The first books were better in my opinion because there was some humor in them but it fell away with the other authors who opted for a more serious tone.

However I'm still disappointed that there is no meeting between all the surviving Valos we've met so far. I wished they all started a big community of survivors together, it would be awesome, so many different types of Valos in one place. Could be interesting.

Another set of otherworldy hunks. I'm IN! This time, we're meeting the air elementals and their, well, kinda sad existence. I mean, ALL the Valos have pretty crappy existences, so that's kind of a given, I guess. Still. It's gotta suck being confined to your elemental form and unable to feel, right.

Until a certain thief falls into their path, that is. Then it's all smoldering anger and sexy times. I mean, eventually it's sexy times. You have to sort of work up to that, you know.

Speaking of pretty crappy existences (which I kind of was up there somewhere), Aveline does not have an easy time of it on the prison ship. Again, while everyone aboard (excluding the sociopathic doctors and guards) have to deal with some pretty terrible things, Aveline's getting it from both Doctor CrazyPants and her not-so-great sister she's imprisoned with.

We're seeing more of the world, meeting more of the Valos, and learning getting another glimpse into the tragedy the Creators, err, created. I'm enjoying this series a lot and can't wait to see what the next set of Valos will bring.

Aveline endures. She's a survivor. She's a protector by taking the bad things that happen for her sister. The prison ship, for Aveline, is horrific. There is pointless torture by a prison doctor.

When the ship is split open, Aveline gets sucked out of it and lands in a weird world. Clouds that are solid? Clouds that move against the wind or are the wind? Clouds that change color and chase her?

The Ventos are creatures of the air of Sonhadra. They've never seen anyone like Aveline except for bad creatures called Creators. The way they discover that she isn't a Creator and how they deal with the fallout from that discovery are also the path of the romance.

Aveline needed all the men and they needed her. Her experiences with her sister and the prison doctor help her understand what the Ventos have been through and the opposite is also true. They understand her.

It is a satisfying romance to read. I was happy for them as they found each other.

Lacking

Lacking is the best word I can think of to describe this one. The guys always referred to the girl as a warrior, but I saw nothing that made her a warrior. She was a very insecure survivor, but surviving cruel medical procedures does not make you a warrior. She never actually fought for anything. Her and her sister stole for a living. Not once did I ever hear that either of them tried to find a job. Can you tell I have no respect for those that take from other who work hard for what they have? I also get that everyone has an insecure inner voice that tells them they aren't good enough, but this girl constantly whined here aloud. Again no respect for someone like that. It was also far too instant that you're the one was determined. About an hour after meeting. Maybe it's because I just did not like the mc, that it felt forced. There one sexual encounter seemed insubstantial and poor Ettan didn't even get any. They never worked out how to feed and water her, how they would work out each getting quality time and not being jealous. They just never really melded as a RH. For an RH to really work, the group has to be a solid unit that flows around each other without jealousy. The unit never really came together that we could see anyway. I just wasn't impressed with this offering in the series.

This RH paranormal is wonderful. It's like a Sci-fi fairytale. Different from everything I usually read. I want to give spoilers to explain how different, but I really don't want to spoil your entertainment. Aveline the survivor meets her guys. Even though they are different they are hot.

Unfortunately did not bring me rainbows of joy. The "air" descriptions were unique but kind of confusing to follow. Short story, insta- love, heroine is a sucker for her sister which bites her in the end.

The Valos of Sonhadra series is a Sci-Fi alien romance with each of the 9 books in the series being told by a different author. If you have a favourite author of the bunch and don't want to read them all don't worry, each book can be read as a standalone. The background story for each book is the same, the heroine for nefarious and various reasons has been locked away in a prison ship and being experimented on by scientists. The experimentation changes each of the heroines in some way, which becomes massively useful when the prison ship crash lands on an unfamiliar planet. That's when the heroine starts to meet the natives. Sonhadra, the planet they have landed on, is inhabited by different factions of valos. The valos all have unique abilities and appearances...and most of them haven't seen a female in a long long time.

Wins the Award for Worst Sister of the Series

This is the first book I have read by Ripley Proserpina and although I would try her again as their were aspects I liked, I didn't fall in love with this book. The first part of the book felt a little confused and I found the heroes lacklustre. I did like the heroine in the story, she had been through a lot and I wanted to finally have her happily ever after.

Overall thoughts: I thought this was one of the weaker books in the series, however, it was a sweet story and I would read this author again.<.b>

This wasn't as good as other stuff I've read by this author. It had an interesting concept, but I'm not sure how much of it can actually be attributed to this particular author because of the number of authors involved in the series. I didn't dislike this MC, but she wasn't as engaging as other MCs from this author, in large part because this book is missing the humor present in her other books. I gather that this series doesn't have a particularly light tone, but I still missed the humor that the author is capable of.

I was also underwhelmed by the harem members, even though they had sweet moments. They had different roles and abilities, but their personalities were fairly interchangeable. I also wasn't into the air sex. It made sense because the men aren't human, but there's a problem if the best thing that you can say about a sex scene is that it makes sense.

It's a little thing that isn't the author's fault, but it bothered me that the cover artist went through the effort of including one of the scars on the MC's face (an effort I appreciate) but didn't portray her damaged eye, which seems to be the MC's most noticeable physical characteristic. The book also had a somewhat distracting issue near the end. The author talked about the sunlight hitting a character's throat, but they were inside. I had to go back and check whether they were outside after all. It's possible that the light came from a window, but that should have been specified to ground the readers in the scene.

Nope and more nope. There were times where I was so confused about what was happening that I would reread the passage again and again and again. And then I would give up and move on, hoping the more important parts would be covered again later. Sometimes I couldn't even keep up with how many people, um... beings, were involved. It was usually an action scene and all I really needed to know was who won the skirmish, but it kinda ruined the whole point of reading a book instead of, you know, a summary or something. This is my first book by this author (and my last), so I don't know if she generally has trouble describing activity, but this was unreadable.
Now, usually I would give an author a second chance to see if was just a fluke. But I didn't like the heroine, either. There's being independent, and then there's stupidly throwing away needed resources just because you are being stubborn. The men were okay, but I didn't like them all equally, which is a death knell for a reverse harem book. There wasn't much of a plot beyond Aveline resisting her attraction to the men and then falling into bed with them. Which, again, got confusing as to who was doing what occasionally. Then we got a very tropey, but somehow not really sinister final confrontation, and an HEA.
So, nope. No more.

p.s. My one star ratings are only for books that are especially heinous or make me mad. This one was just garden-variety bad.

Aveline is a thief. Caught, she and her sister are serving time on a penal ship where Avaline was the subject of a sadistic doctor who wanted to answer the question of how much damage could be inflicted on the human body before it could no longer heal itself or respond to medication. Daily experiments proved that her tissue and muscles could regrow, her skin could repair itself although she was left scarred, and she was left blind in one eye when it couldn't heal. The daily torture she was subjected to was what she deserved for being a criminal, for being bad. It also made her feel as if she was protecting her sister and family is everything. When the penal ship tears apart Aveline is sent hurtling through space finding herself on a planet of color and clouds. The foreign planet appears abandoned. Escaping from a "nebula" Aveline crashes through a building and receives a stone that when it breaks apart finds its way to form 4 men/Ventos, beings of the air. Thanasis, Ettan, Branesh, and Aaddhar are brothers, possibly the only remaining survivors of their planet. Aveline helps to bring them back to life as their world also starts to come to life again. She is quite different from the men, but they each feel that she is a warrior, that her life and all she survived led her to them, made her perfect for them. She is their one. Can she forgive herself for her past and let go of her shame in order to let down the walls and accept these men? Will her past catch right back up to her before she even gets a chance at a better life?

Please allow me to gush for a minute over this author. Ripley Proserpina is masterful at worldbuilding. Once again she has created a new world with such vivid descriptions that it comes to life in front of your eyes. This planet is so picturesque. Each striking color of the clouds, the land, the men themselves paint a picture that makes each word stand out intensely. The history is detailed and rich, the characters complex. The relationships, although sudden, are realistic and believable. They are also sweet and sexy! I am in awe of this author's creativity and originality. She is one of the more talented authors writing today. She takes this setting, these characters and then weaves an enjoyable story. It was so satisfying; Kharma can be wonderful.

I've never read the previous books in thus series but I have read other books by this author before, who is totally awesome by the way! And what's even better is that Whirlwind can be read as a Standalone, and i still enjoyed it and understood it.

We start off with Aveline in some pretty horrific circumstances. She is on a prisoner ship, hovering over Earth. And some very wrong things are happening to her, mainly very sick and twisted experiments (pretty much being cut open and put back together) causing pain and scars by a prison doctor. Why is she going through this? Because she's a thief and got caught. Who got her to steal? Her ungrateful sister who got her to steal. Who she can't say no to. Who is also on this prison ship. But is not going through the same stuff. Shes CLEANING. And still putting the blame on Aveline.

So when she gets sucked out of the ship and into the wormhole to Valos I'm cheering inside. But there's so many unknowns. The air is thin, the clouds are solidish and there's coloured clouds chasing her!

She ends up freeing these Valos from a half life, that they were trapped in, by the Creators (bad bad peoples) and the guys, brothers are very different, being solid and randomly turning into air when things are too emotional or intense *cough* very hot scenes *cough* and you can see their emotions in the different colours they portray. Very hot very awesome and different. May have to read the previous three books in this series!

Aveline, Aaddhar, Ettan, Branesh, and Thanasis.

Aveline was raised in an orphanage along with her sister Marisol. When they aged out of the system, they were on their own with no means of support. Aveline worked when she could, but stole other things in order to survive. Marisol was the brains behind the thefts while Aveline was the one who did the work. When they got caught at a financial institution, they were sent to Concord prison. But only Aveline was experimented on, not Marisol, because Aveline stepped forward to get the scientists eyes on her not her sister. Aveline was experimented on with pain and healing.
When the ship entered the wormhole, Aveline was sucked out into space and landed on a cloud. She then noticed a city. As she went towards the city she was buffeted and then chased by different winds. She went into a sort of building where a gem appeared then split into fourths. Smoke exited the gems and then men formed out of the air.
Aaddhar, Ettan, Branesh, and Thanasis are Ventos. They were already elementals of the earth and air before the Creator's changed them and used them. These four are the last of their kind.
There is betrayal as well as acceptance in this story. This is also a little different because they were Ventos instead of tribe members before they were changed. I am enjoying the journey that i am taking through each of the books in this series.

Aveline is a prisoner on a prison ship orbiting earth. As such she has been stripped of her rights and become a medical science experiment. The cruel Dr. Bates keeps “breaking her” to see if her body can fix itself and has stripped her of vision in one eye. Her life is thrown upside-down when The Concord is sucked into a worm hole and breaks up in Sonhadra’s atmosphere.

Aveline accidentally brings 4 brothers back to life: Thanasis, Ettan, Branesh, and Aaddhar. The brothers are Ventos, beings of the air. They can take the form of a man or ride the winds of their planet, Sonhadra. Now they need to figure out what Aveline means to them, try to heal her, and decide what to do with the rest of their lives.

I found Whirlwind a very sensual reverse harem read. I definitely would love to read MORE about these characters! The brothers each have different roles as Ventos such as Healer, Guardian, etc. This is book 4 of the Valos of Sonhadra Series and can stand alone. There is much more to this story, so you will have to read it to find out! Aveline is quite enamored with her 4 new mates. I’m sure you will be, too! I definitely would love to read MORE about these characters in a future novella!

4 stars for Whirlwind by Ripley Proserpina.

A kinder, gentler genie

The Ventos reminded me a bit of genies, hence the title.

Avaline only stole to feed herself, but much like Aladdin, was condemned for it. Her sister was just unfortunate enough to be along on this run. Both of them were sent to, the now infamous, space prison. But only 1 sister went under the scalpel of the not so good doctors aboard the station. Avaline traded her pain for her sister's safety. When the prison crashes on an alien planet they are separated and Avaline doesn't know if anyone else made it. Trapped in a city of clouds and air she stumbles across not 1 but 4 genies, er, um, Ventos. They don't grant magical wishes, but will they make her dreams of peace and happiness come true?

This author has a much softer writing style than the previous 3 do in this series. The 1st 2 need to be read together but the rest can be read as standalones. Although, I recommend reading the while series. It has been interesting so far. I do see a lot of correlation between Aladdin and this story but I think that was maybe luck of the draw?

Ambivalent

I don't know if the writing style or the subject matter had the most impact. This fourth story in the series was more difficult for me to read. I loved the first chapter in all its horrifying gruesomeness. But the fall from the ship and all the subsequent events of Aveline, the MFC, falling into the cloud city was both brilliant and confusing. The author, a writer I've never read before, did some serious manipulation of word choice to make the visualization of the scene be as clear as it was. Still the whole scenario with the temple and being shoved into it was slightly out of focus for me. In addition, I couldn't completely connect with the characters. With Aveline, I felt an affinity to her immediately, but with her Ventos guys, not so much. They are elementals of wind and air. It was hard to wrap my head around that concept. Ultimately, I awarded 4 stars for the difficult nature of the subject matter. All confusion being due to my inability as a reader and not from the writing.

Confusing world building even after reading the other books.

They describe her as blind in the beginning, then maybe it’s just peripheral vision loss, then its one whole eye. Weird inconsistencies like that exist in the whole book. The experiments on her seem particularly pointless compared to the other stories in the series.

I’ll keep reading in the series, but this one could probably be skipped.

Overall my first impression of this book was that I didn't think that I'd like it. Personally the start was a little slow but did help with world and character building so it was worth it. The more I read the more I fell in love with the characters and their world. This story is really well developed but I am giving it a 4 star review because personally I wish the story had been longer. when you're reading it, it doesn't come across as really fast or anything but once you're done I found that it wasn't as satisfying as it could have been or that I didn't connect as well with them just because the male characters were not as explored for the readers. Meaning we got small parts of them but nothing that really shows you who they are.

Overall for a standalone story It was a great sweet romantic read that wasn't too heavy in any given area.

Just like I have found in previous stories by this author 'Whirlwind' soars with creativity. An alien race whose emotions are broadcast by the colors showing on their skin and whose physical composition can be changed from air to solid? Superb. And even though I always struggle with the injustices done to characters - and Ms. Proserpina always does this to me with her characters! - that theme in this book is an interesting component to the story. I love sexy times in reverse harem stories, and there is a nice group scene in this story (I want some in The Searchers series too!) but I find it and the romance of the story overall to be very sweet.

I think I would have enjoyed the story better if it was longer, allowing more time to develop the emotional connection between the characters, and to delve deeper into their experiences on the planet, but I still really enjoyed it.

Whirlwind: Valos of Sonhadra is book 4 of the series but I have not read any of the others and this read fine as a standalone. This is a reverse harem romance but also has plenty of other things going on in it. A complex storyline that creates a unique world and the engaging characters that populate it make for enjoyable reading. Aveline is so strong and you will really hurt for her when you are shown the incredible pain and suffering she has had to endure. Thanasis, Aaddhar, Branesh, and Ettan are very unique heroes and I loved the sweetness they showed Aveline. In all a enjoyable sci-fi romance. I would have loved a longer book to provide more depth to the story and the emotions that you knew were brewing between the characters and from Aveline ordeal. I am posting an honest review after reading an advance copy of this book.

the Tao of menage

Whirlwind is a lovely, hopeful, love story of the menage variation - and author Ripley Proserpina infuses it with lyricism, poet descriptions, and a mystical flavor. I enjoyed the way she let her characters show us who and what they were in their own time. Aveline in [articular was very realistically portrayed as a girl who grew from accepting an undeserved victim's mentality to a forgivinging and generous, almost goddess-like woman bound heart and soul to four loving Ventos air elementals. Each of the four male Ventos has a distinct personality and a unique contribution to the relationships, yet they fulfill a united purpose in the story. Themes of loss and compensation, moving on, and restoration weave through the book, giving it an enchantingly uplifting mood. Just wonderful.

The book started off interesting with Aveline on the prison ship being tortured, once the ship starts to crash and Aveline gets sucked out into a cloud city is when the author lost me.  Who was attacking her at this point and why?  I never did understand how she wound up in the temple or where the heart stones came from.

It was all confusing.  I even went back and re-read it and was still confused.  Later in the story when her men tried to explain what happened, I still didn’t get it.  There was just a lot of overall confusion in the story.  Which just got frustrating.  Proserpina’s vision just didn’t translate for me onto the page, and I couldn’t see what she was trying to depict.

I wanted to like this book, but I couldn’t get a grasp on it.  Because of that, I am giving it 2 Boundless stars; it could have been a lot better.

Really enjoyed this story. Aveline is a very sympathetic character not so much her sister Marisol who is selfish as well as mean to her. While she is experimented on by Dr. Bates a psychotic man who enjoys causing pain but he does not touch Marisol who only has housekeeping duties. The ship crashes on a planet and the sisters are separated and Aveline is carried to the ground by wind and clouds. Aveline ends up meeting four humanoid natives of the planet. Branesh, Ettan, Aaddhar and Thanasis. Slowly speaking to each other they end up understanding each other. Really liked these four guys and they were attracted to Aveline besides her scars. There is torture and betrayal but the four make up for her previous life.

I really love how different the men were in this book. They were air people, and they could become solid and then air in the blink of an eye.

I also liked Aveline. She was very sweet. A very pure soul, despite the life she lived through, she retained an innocence about her.

The problem I think I have with this series is, first off, I’m not a huge RH fan, but RH in a short story feels too rushed. I always end up favoring on guy and one guy always seems to have less of a connection or less scenes with the heroine. I don’t know. I enjoyed the story, but I’m. It sure I’m going to finish the series.

DNF @ 75% This is usually a pretty decent author but I don't know what happened here, but it wasn't good. The set up wasn't bad - tortured FMC, which a controlling sister, and a heart of gold. However, it fell apart after the crash to the new planet. There's confusing descriptions of the surroundings and the Velos, and also that sister....almost never mentioned again. Things happen rapidly, like all within a day so this is a short read with no relationship build up at all. The one who was mean and standoffish just flipped a switch and was her first sexual encounter but...it was confusing and lacking.

I really have nothing good to say about this book unfortunately. Not her best work.

it’s a fluffy one

Well paced and the author gives us two spicy scenes one of mild spice 🌶️ and one of moderate spice 🌶️ 🌶️ 🌶️. The fmc in this one leans towards meek and docile, she’s a very doe eyed character, as a result the experimentation on the prison ship leans very dark for her, which is kinda nice in that it makes sense. It’s like mild dark horror for the first 20 pages. The m/m/m/m mcs are interesting in anatomy and since they’re mostly elemental (wind) there isn’t lots of fluids to discuss, which may or may not suit your ick. Anyways it was fluffy, mild spoiler: idk how you have an air baby but I do think she will eventually 😂

An emotional whirlwind it is!
Concord Prison is a space ship circling Earth. Aveline and her sister were thieves, now condemned to endless experimentation. When the ship is battered, shattered, Aveline falls through clouds, blown about by winds.
Aveline shows amazing strength and bravery, honed by her experiences. The beings she finds are quite unique; their personalities, as they are revealed, are very appealing. Evil-doers are quickly put in their place. Oh, the adventures! A very enjoyable addition to an intriguing set of stories! I voluntarily reviewed an author’s copy of this book.
