What reviewers “A holy, rolling, nerve-wracking thriller, and whodunit!” “Lovable characters that you can identify with.”
I enjoyed this book! It’s an entertaining mystery novel with a twisty plot and well drawn characters. Light on the “gritty realism”, but not what I’d call fluff. An Austin, Texas catholic priest and his housekeeper/ assistant are caught up in the murder of a parishioner and the long-time feud that parishioner had with another parishioner. No cats are actually harmed!
The characters are well drawn, and the plot is suitably entertaining. I did figure out the villain’s identity before Father Melvyn or Mrs B. And I’m reasonably sure the author has cats. The title feline behaves like a real animal, not common in books in my experience.
This is a definite 4.5. Lady D said "If you like Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum mystery novels then you will love this one! Easy read, engaging from the beginning to the end, with twists and turns that a good mystery novel should have. Lovable characters that you can identify with. Another successful book written by F. Della Notte. Looking forward to the next book in The Housekeeper Mystery Series. Well done!" Ditto from me on her review. I would just add that if you don't particularly care for Evanovich's Stephanie Plum(as I am not a big fan), then this is definitely better. This is the best new cozy I have read in an age. No silliness or over the top cuteness. Good solid writing.
Even though it was hard to keep up with the numerous characters, especially the "bad ones ", the author kept the plot moving and the characters interesting. The reader eventually finds out why murderer wants to kill the cat. The chapters are broken up by the days before Lent, since one of the main characters is a priest. I recommend this to anyone who enjoys a light murder mystery with delightful felines helping to make the story better.
Did not care for this book. Although I'm sure it's a good mystery, I just couldn't finish it. It seemed to drag and I got really tired of the constant "irritability" of all the characters with everything.
LaLa is not part of a melody but a murder! Poor Father Melvyn, head priest and confidant of all. He and his former housekeeper always had a very abrasive relationship . Imagine his delight in discovering she has retired and conveniently picked a new replacement to save him the trouble. Well after another less than satisfactory housekeeper threatens to quit, he accepts her retirement on the spot. Yep, she placed an ad for a replacement and Father Melvyn insists he will do the interviewing. Fellow priests, Declin and Joe, are aware of the situation but they do an enormous amount of legwork and reap the benefits at mealtime. Mrs. B. is quite the opposite of the former ladies, cooking Italian gourmet meals, excellent scheduler, secretary to the church, and a compassionate assistant at awkward times. Velma, a rich dowager and Mary, a not very rich member have carried on a raging feud for years, even in public places! Each threatening to either kill one of them, or Mary insisting she will kill Velma's cat LaLa! Mary holds a grudge against the cat because her own dogs scared it and the cat ran between Mary's legs. A broken hip later, the feud reached a new level. Velma is devoted to her cat, and any threats against it are serious! Velma is found dead behind the church wall in the midst of winter. Then the ugly secrets start to shed light on scandalous behavior, illegitimate offspring, mob-related debts that are long overdue. Together, this charming group of people learn secrets, and interrelationships that were not expected, the value of friendship and trust, before the solution is revealed. Very good read, story keeps leaping into all directions as clues are revealed to change the focus of the case. Once you start reading, it is difficult to stop!
A very well paced and enjoyable read. Murder mystery with plenty of twists and clues. A good plot involving the Catholic rectory priests and housekeeper. Brief historical intro as to how the team was built and how they worked together. Mrs B (Sammie) was most of the glue keeping things running and a bit of the stickie in the cogs for the bad guys. Both cats and dogs play parts in the story so there is an animal theme present. I look forward to reading book 2 and will look for other books by the author.
I liked this cozy mystery. Although the murder-complications-solution plot is very familiar, there are enough unexpected twists and turns to keep the reader engaged. Also the setting of a Catholic parish in Austin, TX, and the characters - three priests and their housekeeper - make for an unusual cast. Add in the unearthing of long-buried secrets and evil doings and the plot helps readers move quickly through the book.
“I’m going to Kill That Cat” by F. Della Notte is a cozy mystery and a very old feud between two members of the Catholic Parish in Austin Texas. The characters were very likable and human, the action was fast paced and the plot grew throughout. I liked that clues were available within the story and easy to solve, unlike many mysteries where the solving is near to impossible.
This is a fun cozy mystery and I will certainly read the next installment of the series. The reason I rated this book with 4 stars instead of 5 was that I found the punctuation and grammatical errors frustrating. I do hope the next book will be thoroughly proofread and edited.
I’m Going To Kill The Cat was a fun read. The interaction between the characters was believable and witty. I especially liked the relationship between Mrs B and Father Melvyn. The cat, LaLa, was also a charming character. The mystery was interesting and all the loose ends were tied up by the end of the book. Worth your time.
The characters are great, there are animals too and that’s a plus. The editing is pretty bad - lots of missing or repeated words, and misplaced sentences.
The plot is good. It was a good read but I probably won’t read any more in the series or by this writer due to the really poor editing.
A cozy mystery in an unexpected setting. Cats, dogs, priests, housekeepers, illegitimate children, decades old bitterness....makes for a bit of escape on a long ride. I enjoyed it and will follow the author.
I enjoyed this wonderful mystery. It took several chapters to figure out who the 'watcher' was. The setting, characters, and storyline are original. A great read. I am looking forward to the next murder at St Francis.
