Two of Charles Dickens' ghost stories from 1866 and 1865 respectively, are reprinted in this volume, both retold by FH Cornish in easy to read text designed for ease of understanding for younger readers. But the tales lose nothing in being so told as Dickens' majesty in putting across fright to his readers is admirably retained.
In the 1866 'The Signalman', a feeling of something strange occurs almost at once as a visitor to a signal box next to a railway tunnel is immediately alarmed by what he sees. He subsequently befriends the signal man and visits him daily but after a few visits he is faced with a bizarre situation, which he goes down the embankment to investigate. And the suspense is maintained to the very end of the story.
'The Ghost at the Trial' features George Fotherley who spots two apparent strangers in a crowd of passers-by as he looks from the window of his apartment. Little does he know that they will reappear in unusual circumstances.
George is called for jury service at a trial for murder and when he is selected to serve on the jury there is nobody of the 12 jurors who wants to be the foreman. Much to his surprise, George feels a nudge to his arm and suddenly he has the urge to become that foreman. And he is led into a very strange situation, arguing with some of the other jurors and then feeling unseen pressure to take some action. Once again Dickens, and thus FH Cornish, maintains the suspense to an astonishing conclusion.

Do you think that you want to still work? :No, because I do not like ghosts and I do not fun.
I like this series since I read a christmas carole. I want to continue to read it.
I remember reading this in year 10 or 11 English Literature and didn't realise quite how basic and childishly written it is. Both stories in it, however are good enough reads in themselves and I shall be saving this book to read to any children I may have in the future. Morbid Dickens ghost stories are perfect bedtime reading for young children......aren't they?!
