The Demon Fighter’s Council bastards locked me in a Prague dungeon awaiting trial on trumped-up charges. The only human being willing to bailing me out is the Mayor, and we all know he’s not doing that just because he’s a swell guy.
He needs money, and there’s a vampire who can turn metal to gold.
These are the terms of my release: capture the undead alchemist and learn his secrets or else Nic and Kisho get dusted. Either way, I end up in research lab because the Council chuckleheads think I’m not human.
I’m not even sure this alchemist is such a bad guy.
Can I escape the Council, out-trick the mayor and save the three of us?
Join Clem, Nic and Kisho in an adventure filled with wacky shenanigans, surprise liaisons and shock twists. Oh, and they eat some cake, too.
I’m a digital nomad (well I was until 2020 happened), although I hate that term because it makes me sound like a wanky hipster. Which I’m not. Okay, I am a bit snobby about coffee and I sometimes wear twee vintage dresses but that doesn’t make me a hipster.
On my travels, I love visiting weird and macabre places. Mummified hands that remove curses, museums of infectious diseases, collections of taxidermized frogs riding Penny Farthings - hell yeah!
Oh, and that profile photo isn't me, it's my rapscallion Bishon Frise called Hamish. Both of us highly motivated by treats.
I will start by saying that this was one of the funniest books in the series, which is good because the events were quite dire on personal level for Clem, Kisho and Nic. This was also my favourite book in the series. The whole book plays out in Prague because Clem was taken into custody by the Council, and forced to conduct an investigation for them. Besides our three heroes, the Mayor is there as well, what a surprise. The Mayor somehow finds a way to involve his greedy self in every piece of proverbial pie there is. Sometimes he is helpful, if it suits his purposes, and sometimes he is blatantly working against them. Although there is an unforeseen, very funny development regarding the Mayor. Very funny and unexpected. Clem is fabulous as ever, although we get to see the more vulnerable, not yet uncovered side of her. And there are some even more unexpected developments in her regard. Apparently the Council knows more about Clem than anyone else. Oh, and Council is insidious. Regardless, Clem does not back off and she always finds a solution. And there is cake, of course. Kisho and Nic are their wonderful selves. It was really great to have a book with just the three of them and with all of their interactions. And fights about cake, of course. There are some very interesting characters in this book, especially the Alchemist and some of the Council leaders. But what I liked most of all were the descriptions of the city, places they visited, tours they followed, food they ate. I know that the author spent some significant time in Prague doing the research for the book, and it shows. It is demonstrated in every single description, as she conveys the atmosphere of the winter in Prague, tourists and the attractions they visit, as well as slightly less popular locations. There are detailed descriptions of cakes, of course. Reading order is: Sex Demon (Clem Starr: Demon Fighter #0.5), which is the same as Incubus (Clem Starr: Demon Fighter #0.6), Demon Child (Clem Starr: Demon Fighter #1), Moonlight Virgin (Clem Starr: Demon Fighter #2), Vampire Prince (Clem Starr: Demon Fighter #3), Merry Clem-mas (Clem Starr: Demon Fighter 3.5), and Undead Alchemist (Clem Starr: Demon Fighter #4).
I love that this is set in Prague. Of all the places to visit on my 'bucket' list, this is at the top.
Clem, Kisho, Nic and the mayor are involved in some truly ridiculous capers around the Czech Republic, chasing after an alchemist who is single-handedly abducting tourists and causing a real nuisance to 'The Council' - An organisation that don't pull their punches. Clem also starts to find out that she may be more than human after all....
Along the way, Clem and company encounter some wonderfully colourful characters, and Clem invents some spectacularly appropriate nicknames for them. There are abductions, fights, secret lairs, romantic intrigues and so much cake that you could get diabetes just from reading this story!
Kat Cotton has a knack for taking a bunch of unusual characters and getting you to instantly love them all whilst simultaneously laughing your head off at their brutal sarcasm and jibes at each other. At the same time, she is also able to create a romantic bond that is quite warming without becoming mushy and there are some truly poignant moments within this book. Such a human way of portraying the bond with inhuman creatures is such fun that you can't help but love this series.
I defy anyone not to be hooked and look forward to the next book.
Kat Cotton has done it again with the Undead Alchemist it’s a really fantastic read. Clem is in Prague and she is arrested by the council, seemingly they know a lot more about Clem than anyone else. Clem needs a human to get her out but she doesn’t have any human friends so the mayor steps in and gets her out on the condition that Clem retrieves the Alchemist. Nic and Kisho are back and I had a really good laugh with Clem and Nic fighting over cake, they act like such kids it’s hilarious. Another fantastic book added to this series, great descriptions of the places it made me feel like I was actually there. As always I love the characters and Clem is still a sassy kick a$$ woman. I’m going to read this series from the again from the start I just love it. I love a book that can make you laugh and this book certainly did that. I highly recommend this book it’s definitely well worth the read and it deserves more than 5 ⭐️.
This is another fun book with Clem at her snarkiest. She has been locked up and needs a human to come get her out. It makes her realize how few humans she actually knows. The Mayor is designated to be her jailer so to speak and the fun starts.
I love Clem and Nik's relationship. They fight like toddlers over cake and love to torment each other. Kisho is still such a sweetheart and puts up with both of them. Clem loves to have a hold over Nik and really delights in Nik's romantic exploits.
I highly recommend the series if you love a mix of humor with your fantasy. There is plenty of action and romance and the characters are so much fun.
Good cheer to all, as the extraordinary, the sublime, Clem Starr is back. Yes, I’m a bit biased here as books 1 to 3 of Kat Cotton’s Clem Starr: Demon Fighter series were just soooo great. Not a problem though, as book 4, Undead Alchemist, keeps to the high bar that’s been set. If you want a gritty urban fantasy that’s better than Butcher, with a wonderfully snarky kick-a** heroine that can’t be beat, then look no further. Read the publisher’s blurb. If it’s at all vaguely appealing to you then you’re virtually guaranteed to love this book or, even better, to love this series as - trust me - the “smart money” bet here is to start with book 1 and just have fun going along.
Wow, this series is so damn good and this book certainly brought a smile to my face and took away the stress of everyday life. Reading is my way of relaxing. And I love getting lost in a book and this is one of those books that you get lost in and forget your troubles. The main character Clem is just hilarious and the dynamics between her and the other characters Kisho & Nik is just genius. This is one of those books that I just want to write so much about but I know it would spoil the story for other readers and I hate when reviews do that. So if you enjoy urban fantasy with a mix of humor, and great twist along the way, then you will truly find this is a great read.
Once again we return to Clem Starr, Kisho and Nic. This trio of fighters never cease to amuse this reader. This book focuses on Clem association with the Demon Council. All is not what it seems within those walls.
There will be a few small surprises concerning Clem’s past that were not quite expected but will round out her character just a little bit more. Boy oh boy Nic takes a step to the scary side and Kisho is growing up.
These characters are evolving more with each story and I love it. Can’t wait to see what happens in the next book.
Kat Cotton is an amazing story teller, and this book showcases her vast amounts of imagination! Clem, Nic, and Kisho are fantastic characters, and the dynamics between them are fabulous. Especially the cake! Clem is still the snarky, kick-a** chick I have come to love, and the situations she continues to find herself in are full of danger and humor. Saying those two things together sounds a little strange, but trust me, that's what these books are all about. If you haven't started this series you are missing out on some of the BEST urban fantasy stories out there.
Clem, Nic, and Kisho are back and just as funny as the other books. This time they are in Prague and it is well written that I felt I was there too, eating cake of course. Full of funny scenes, Clem being Clem, and the random craziness, I was caught from the beginning and read it all at once. Just a good book. The "good" guys and "bad" guys show up and the Mayor too just because a Clem story cannot forget him too.
I started reading this series and immediately loved the main character Clem Starr the demon fighter. Her personality is loveable along with her two companions Kisho the living vampire and Nic the undead vampire. In this 4th book Clem is under scrunity of The Council and is to undergo trial and sentenced.
Things are starting to get more complicated, the council almost caught them all, Clem’s powers are making themselves known and I am dying to find out what they are and if Kisho has also shared them as he is feeding off Clem, and of course Nic is as sexy and snarky as ever.
