Second-Chance Dogs: True Stories of the Dogs We Rescue and the Dogs Who Rescue Us

Rate this book
Everyone loves an underdog, and nothing gives us warmer feelings than seeing someone get a second chance in life. A problem pup who flourishes under the right kind of training. The struggling veteran who finds unconditional love wiggling around at the end of a leash. The lonely child who finds comfort in the steady breathing of the warm, furry friend at her side. Each of us needs to be rescued from something--and each of us has the capacity to rescue someone, or something, else.

This collection of more than thirty contemporary, true, feel-good stories spotlights the beauty of being rescued--dogs rescued by people, people rescued by dogs, and even dogs who rescue other animals. It's the perfect companion--well, besides the four-legged, tail-wagging kind--for your morning cup of coffee or an evening curled up on the couch. Contributors include Susy Flory, Dusty Rainbolt, Lauraine Snelling, Melody Carlson, Wanda Dyson, Suzanne Woods Fisher, and many more.

I found myself savoring this book, of course I am a dog lover, and at this time have two rescues, so I read one or two at a time, and not in a particular order.
They sure do find a spot in our hearts, and a few of these people were not dog people, but not for long.
A sweet book that will make you smile and your eyes water, and page turning to read the next.
I loved this collection as the dogs touched each of their lives!

I received this book through the Publisher Revell, and was not required to give a positive review.

I am one of those people who always roots for the under dog. I also love animals so Second-Chance Dogs looked like a book I would enjoy. It did not disappoint me either.

Second-Chance Dogs is a book full of real-life stories about dogs who got a second chance, one way or another. This is a feel-good collection of stories of all kinds of dog situations and all kinds of dog owners. One thing all of these stories had in common is that they tugged on my emotions. A few of them made me giggle and more than a few of them touched my heart strings and I shed a tear or two. I imagine any reader who likes dogs would also be touched by these stories. I enjoyed all of the stories in Second-Chance Dogs.

I would recommend Second-Chance Dogs to any other animal lover out there who likes to read and likes to see dogs and humans be rescued. I have to be honest, some day soon I am hoping we can have our own real life rescue dog story as we find a dog we can rescue--or maybe it will rescue us. I have sent up a few prayers so we will see how God works in our lives--and hopefully the life of a dog somewhere out there who needs us.

Cleanliness: Very Clean (Topics to consider: abuse, still-birth, disease, religion, and death.)

This book really hurt. It really, really hurt, but that's mostly on me for bad timing. I guess hurting is not a bad thing because it can ultimately lead to healing. I lost my 14-year-old baby, Pogo, a few weeks ago. Reading this brought so many memories to mind. Second-Chance Dogs is packed full of stories of love and loss. Even though they were a little hard to read, there were lots of uplifting, sweet, and beautiful stories.

If you like Chicken Soup for the Soul books, you will absolutely adore this book! I could definitely believe it was one if I didn't know otherwise.

Warning: reading this will make you want to rescue a dog! By the time I was done, I had a major urge to visit an animal shelter. I totally recommend Second-Chance Dogs to all dog lovers! It may make you sad, but it will also make your heart happy.

Well shoot. Now I want a puppy. This book was a collection of dogs that were either rescues, or rescued their owners, put together by over 30 people.

The stories were all really adorable, and really sweet, some more than others, of course, but all super heartwarming and darling! The stories range from sad, to ordinary, to sweet, to fulfilling, but I enjoyed them all. They were all short enough that I could finish in a handful of minutes, which was really helpful.

I was not the biggest fan of some of the writing styles of several of the stories and some of the content from the stories felt a little bit flat, but overall, it was a really enjoyable series that I enjoyed!

This is a super precious book. Every dog lover should read this. Every single one. What a wonderful collection of stories about dogs who are rescued, then turned around and rescued their owners. And each story is absolutely true. Stories that will make your heart feel near to bursting with emotion, this one is for the keeper shelf of every dog lover.

*My thanks to the publisher for a copy of this book. The opinion stated here is entirely my own.

Second-Chance Dogs: True Stories of the Dogs We Rescue and the Dogs Who Rescue Us is the latest in animal anthologies compiled by Callie Smith Grant. The stories in Second-Chance Dogs are entertaining and I'm sure the book could have included many more. (Another book, please!) There are thousands more stories out there and hundreds of thousands of dogs in holding facilities that need to have their happily-ever-after story unfold (and told). I highly recommend reading all of the books compiled/edited by Ms. Grant.

(Warning, Sermon follows)

I love dogs. I have my Shorty Jack Russell Terrier sleeping on my lap as I type this. I've had four rescues already and every one of them has been a delight.

I'm glad that there are several websites that showcase strays and unwanted dogs at shelters across the country.

Some of these dogs might need more understanding and and persistence to train. Others might have special needs. Many were loved but were simply given up because of a death in the family or a move to a care facility or no-pets-allowed rental. Some are abandoned when there is a new child in the family and they become 'too much work'. Perhaps their owner worked too many hours and the dog lacked attention, possibly spending its day in a kennel. Sometimes their human became homeless and couldn't feed them any more. And then there are the dogs liberated from puppy mills. –– Please visit your local shelter or go online to look for your own 'story-to-be' furry animal. Recommended websites are PetSmart Charities, AdoptaPet, Petfinder, Petango, PetHarbor, RescueMe.Org, or a "Breed Rescue".

(End of Sermon, with apologies (and thanks) to those who already have brought home their own rescued pet.)

I obtained this book through a Goodreads giveaway from Revell, a division of Baker Publishing Group. I thank them for this review copy but receiving it from them in no way affected my rating or review.

This review and many more are available on my blog, Read Till Dawn .

I'm a huge sucker for sappy stories about amazing animals, especially about dogs. That's why I always jump at the opportunity to review books like this, which tell stories about great dogs.

What this book does different from similar books I've read, however, is it focuses on sweet redemption stories about dogs who were rescues or rehomed, showing how they went on to live rewarding lives or help a human through a rough time in their life. There are no stories about dogs saving their families from fires, or preventing snake attacks. These are stories instead about dogs who helped their family deal with grief (after the loss of both human and canine family members), or became constant companions to lonely people, or simply added a bright spot to someone's life.

On one hand, I really like these more humble, personal stories. These are the stories of dogs like my own Daisy, a Boxer who passed away a few months ago. Daisy was no miracle dog, she never saved any of us from anything worse than a baby bird she once accidentally caught (and then immediately released), but she was a smart and loving member of our family and we all miss her very much. Some of the stories of the dogs in this collection made me tear up a bit, actually, because either the dogs reminded me of Daisy or their loving stories reminded me how amazing it is to have a dog in your family.

My only real complaint about the book is that, at times, the stories are so everyday that I almost began to wonder why they were published. And a few of the dogs didn't really seem like rescue dogs–they were adopted as puppies off the internet, or from friends who had planned to buy them but had plans fall through at the last minute. I think the author wanted to include stories from as many famous people as possible, whether or not their stories really fit the narrative of the book or not. I don't mind too much, since the stories are still pretty sweet, but it's just something that stuck out to me while I was reading through them.

There are flashier books out there, but if you're looking for a collection of sweet stories about sweet dogs, then this should be right up your alley.

That Dog of Mine!

PLEASE READ THIS REVIEW ON MY BLOG: http://bookreadingtic.com/2018/10/02/... THANK YOU!

Have you had a dog touch your life in a way that you will never forget? Those are the experiences that are shared in this collection of thirty-six reminiscences about dogs and the people who loved them.

I felt a kinship to the story-tellers because many of them write about a dog smiling. Growing up with dogs, I had often seen a dog do that. Later, I was unprepared for the blank looks I got from people when I mentioned a dog’s grin. But in this group of stories, the authors often refer to a dog’s smile.

One of the story’s reference to Gotcha Day reminded me of the time a little girl was adopted by my good friend’s family. Until then, I hadn’t known “Gotcha Day” is the term used for the actual day the judge grants the adoption, and makes everything legal. Because of its importance that date is often celebrated yearly, just like a birthday. When I saw one of the stories entitled Gotcha Day, I immediately knew how special, and important, it was to that family to have their dog join them.

Every story in Second-Chance Dogs is clean, and some mention faith. The tales range from the family dog, to soldiers and their canine comrades, to rescue dogs that help in a variety of situations. None of them take more than a few minutes to read. Some will make you laugh and others may bring a tear to your eye. I do wish a larger size font was used for the text, but it doesn’t take away from these heartfelt stories. Any dog lover, or fan of true stories, will appreciate this book.

Callie Smith Grant has edited a number of animal books including: The Cat on My Lap, The Cat in the Window, The Dog Next Door, and The Dog at My Feet.

Revell Publishing has provided bookreadingtic with a complimentary copy of Second-Chance Dogs, for the purpose of review. I have not been compensated in any other manner. We cannot deny that pets play a larger role in the lives of Americans now than they did at any earlier time. Childless couples refer to them as their "fur-babies." And if you are a frequent HGTV viewer like I am, you've seen countless people select a home because it meets the specific needs of their pet, whether it's a large backyard, a quick walk to the dog park, or large windows for Miss Kitty's daily sunning. A decade ago, courageous people might try taking their animals on a camping trip, but seldom on any other vacation. Now hotels promote being pet friendly and many pet owners would never leave Rover behind. Just a few days ago my husband and I took a fall color tour from Wisconsin through Michigan's UP across the big bridge and out to Mackinac Island. On our ferry were several dogs, including a young puppy with the softest fur -- definitely a loved and pampered "fur-baby." It is only natural then that people sharing their pet stories has made its way into the publishing field. Callie Smith Grant has gathered a delightful assortment of tales about how owners found their dogs (or vice-versa) and how that event changed everyone's lives. Now, I always pack several books when I travel and besides SECOND-CHANCE DOGS, I took two novels on this short trip to Michigan. Although I tried, I could not make any headway in either of the novels, despite one author being a favorite of mine. SECOND-CHANCE DOGS was a different story. Reading this book was like opening a bag of potato chips. I planned to "eat" just one or two entries, but soon found that I had read for over an hour and totally missed going to the hot tub. This would be a wonderful gift book for any dog lover. And the book transcend age levels. A good solid middle school reader would delight in some of the stories. But if they cry over every sad dog movie like my two middle school granddaughters, they may shed a few tears. But mostly they will grin and perhaps enjoy their own pet relationship more than before. And older adults, like me, will reminiscence about all the family pets they've had.

Most people in life are either cat people or dog people. I always thought myself a cat person until an unfortunate event happened in our life. One night while the kids and I were gone and my husband worked out of town we were robbed. We knew it was by local kids, but it was still unnerving. I told my husband that night I was going to the shelter in the morning and bringing home the biggest dog they had. I saw a rottweiler on their website, but when I got there they didn't have one. I asked them to show us the biggest dogs they had and one of the first ones we saw was the one we brought home. We were told he was a Sharpe/coon dog mix, but most people think he has more German Shepherd in him. From that day on our house because a cat AND dog house. It's so sad to go to the local shelters because they are so full of animals waiting to be adopted. I see posts every day that sadden me of all those needing forever homes!

Thankfully Second-Chance Dogs by Callie Smith Grant brings the more joyful side of those animals in shelters. This book is full of 36 TRUE stories of the dogs that have been rescued and how more often than not they rescue us. Many times we are sad or lonely and an animal can make a huge difference in our lives. Just having someone to come home to and that depends on us can often turn our lives around. These stories made me laugh as well as cry and hope that one day there won't be any animals sitting in shelters waiting for homes.

Callie Smith Grant is the author of several other books. The Cat in the Window: And Other Stories of the Cats We Love, The Dog Next Door: And Other Stories of the Dogs We Love, The Cat on My Lap: Stories of the Cats We Love and The Horse of My Heart: Stories of the Horses We Love I think anyone that loves animals would enjoy Second-Chance Dogs or any of the other books written by this author. This are the feel-good type of books that you can curl up with a cup of tea on a cold day and enjoy.

This book is a collection of 36 stories by multiple different authors about dogs that they had, many that have been rescued and about how their owners lives were changed or saved because of those dogs.

There are all kinds of stories, all about dogs. There's a story about smuggling dogs home after war, a story about the only real dog in the world, a story about the dog who only pointed once, a story about a guardian dog, about energetic dogs, life-giving dogs.

I had no favorites. They were all really good, and best of all, true. They all involved dogs and they were all heartwarming. I do have to warn you though. If you only like reading sci-fi or horror/thriller, you may not be fasinated with this book

I do have to mention one story by name, being, ya know, hard of hearing and also an ASL lover, it's my duty. "Two Rotties and a Toddler" (page 81) almost made me cry, watching the little girl make that connection between sign language and communication. The picture in my brain of two Rottweilers listening to this little special needs girl absolutely melted my heart, just like it will melt yours when you read it.

Becaue y'all are going to read the book. Even if you don't like reading (first off, this post requires reading AND it says book review at the top so good luck explaining that to me) or don't think that you have time for another book (they are all short stories, just read one a day for your daily dose of happy), you will read it. I command you to.

Also, just a heads up, Revell Publishers sent me a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. The views expressed here are completely my own.

That being said, my rating is this: 5 out of 5 stars.

I love inspiring stories, especially when they are true.  That being said, I’m also a BIG dog lover having only gone a few weeks of my entire life without a canine companion.  “Second Chance Dogs”, then, was an easy choice of read for me, as it is a feel-good collection of true stories of “the dogs we rescue, and the dogs who rescue us.”

With short chapters, this book is great to just pick up and read for a few minutes when you have the time.  Each chapter is a different story from dozens of contributors including Melody Carlson, Lauraine Snelling, and many more.  Some stories are humorous, others touching, and all will bring warmth to your heart.

So far, I have not read all of the stories in this book, but I am glad to say that I have not yet come across one with a sad ending.  I often stay clear of sad animal stories as they are, for me, just too painful, which makes the feel-good vibe of “Second Chance Dogs” all the more appreciated.

My favourite story so far is called “A Racer’s Second Chance”, about a former racing greyhound.  I love how the contributor’s strong connection to animals shone through very obviously in this story of a dog who can outrun horses.

“Second Chance Dogs” is a great choice for any dog-lovers bookshelf.  It would be a great book to set out on your coffee table too, as long as no wagging tails sweep it onto the floor!

Second-Chance Dogs
True Stories of the Dogs We Rescue and the Dogs Who Rescue Us
Edited by Callie Smith Grant

Everyone loves a good dog story or at least I do and this collection of stories offers several that will warm your heart. Second-Chance Dogs is an offering of dogs who are offered a second chance at life and a home. But these delightful new additions also offer their new families a second chance as well.

All too often after the loss of a beloved friend, one declares that they can't take the heartbreak of another pet but somehow these four-legged bundles of life manage to make a place in hearts that are hurting.

I really like that each story is a quick read and takes under 10 minutes. Some of these stories will bring tears while others will make you smile as you are reminded of the antics of your beloved furry friend. I highly recommend this book - it would be a great gift for the dog-lover in your life. Another possibility for this book is if you volunteer with seniors is this would be a great group read-aloud book that could be read a story at a time.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book by Revell with no expectation but my honest opinion - all opinions expressed are my own.

If you like a good dog story, then you are going to love Second-Chance Dogs, a collection of personal stories that share special thoughts about rescue dogs. And when I say rescue dogs, I mean more than a shelter dog. Yes, all of the beloved dogs in the more than 30 stories started their second lives as rescues, they did a lot to rescue their humans. In this book you’ll meet Rusty Dog who brought two people together and taught them to love and trust again. There’s also Jazzy who taught her human about God’s great gift of rest. And there are so many more heartwarming encounters that are found within the pages of this book. Each story is just a few pages, but the messages will stay with you for a long time. I think Second-Chance Dogs is the perfect book for family reading time. You will probably find yourself talking about more than the dogs highlighted in each story. And don’t be surprised if you and your family start longing for another faithful member to join you! 😉 The book is great for when you have limited reading time, but be prepared for one more story.

Recommended.

Audience: adults (but good for family time too)

"True Stories of the Dogs We Rescue and the Dogs Who Rescue Us."

I love the subtitle of Second-Chance Dogs: True Stories of the Dogs We Rescue and the Dogs Who Rescue Us, edited by Callie Smith Grant. Why? I love it because it holds more truth than we can imagine, or even contemplate by those who've never had a dog. Just merely two years ago, I would be in that camp, that is, until my Gabby and Reagan came into my life. My two puppies have given me much joy, and in many sense, rescued me with their unconditional love. That is what these stories in Second-Chance Dogs are about. It's about second chances for us, as well as for many of these dogs, and I love how each story is different with the same underlying theme.

In all, Second-Chance Dogs will tug your emotions, bring laughter to you and warm your heart to know that there are others who feel the same about their pups. There's an overall message that just about hit home when it comes to the idea of love.

This is a heart-warming book containing more than 30 short stories written by several authors about dogs. In Second-Chance Dogs, you will read about the different ways in which dogs have made an impact in the lives of their owners and others. I love dogs so I appreciated these warm stories about how God can and uses dogs in daily life. Sometimes, our teachers are animals themselves and as these stories attest, dogs can play vital roles in our healing.

I enjoyed the different stories contained in this book, written from several perspectives and from all walks of life. The only draw-back is that I wish it would have been more Christian in nature. God is hardly mentioned. For a Christian book, it was very low in Christian content. After all, if God created dogs He can definitely use them to be companions and helpers to humans, I just wished the writers would have given God all the credit due to Him, and not just the dogs themselves.

Who doesn't love a dog story? Well, how about thirty-six true stories? These stories touch my heart, maybe because they're about rescue dogs. Usually, you think of rescue dogs as ones we get from a humane society or one of the rescue societies. This book is a little unusual that way because it's also about some dogs who rescued their humans in one way or the other. Five stars!

Dogs seem intuitive when their humans are upset or sick or needing something more than a cup of coffee or a satisfying meal can bring. A lot of us have stories, and these thirty-six writers shared stories of hope and healing. I know with my own dog, she really helped me through the grieving period after my husband died. She still does on those missing the hubby days that still occur.

If you've ever loved a dog, you know what I mean. The book is available from Amazon and Barnes and Noble.

I received a free copy from one of the writers, but my opinions are my own.

I cried happy tears and found unexpected twists along the way! Whether I read with my morning cup of coffee, turned pages during an afternoon rainstorm or curled up on the sofa (with my own furry best friend by my side of course) and an adult beverage, the stories made me feel good and warmed my heart for the humanity I don't see on the evening news. Dogs that saved people, people who saved dogs and dogs who saved other animals. True stories that make you smile and give you back your faith in mankind! I highly recommend this book, and not just because one of the stories are mine. What the others writers shared touched my soul.

Love dogs? This is the heart-warming collection of dog stories and the people who love them! Most of the stories are about rescued dogs - some “designer” dogs (one of a kind mixed breed dogs – used to be known as mutts!) and others purebred dogs – but there are also stories of therapy dogs, seeing eye dogs and plain ordinary dogs who love their humans. These dogs add so much to our lives and the stories showcase just a few of them. I particularly liked the story of the rottweilers who took care of a little girl. I am grateful to have won my copy of Second-Chance Dogs, and loved the stories of how pet parents are those who are actually receiving a "second chance." My hope would be that the publisher could solicit more stories from everyday folks, rather than "professional writers" whose purpose seems to be building resumes. (I read many of the bios of the contributors, pages 203-211.) While moved by a few of the stories, some were lacking true sincerity/heart. (Maybe it was just the chosen style of writing.) However, any time animal rescues can be the focus of a book, I am a fan!
Again, thank you for my copy!

Second-Chance Dogs: True Stories of the Dogs We Rescue and the Dogs Who Rescue Us by Callie Smith Grant is a must read for all animal lovers. The short stories show us the joys of love and kindness. It made me laugh and cry. Definitely, a sweet collection that swept me off my feet and into the lives of the animals mentioned. There's a bond that forms between the humans and the dogs. A great collection of true stories about dogs who were rescued by humans or had rescued their humans. My favorite stories were the WWII story about how the American soldiers rescued a bunch of strays in Europe, drugged and smuggled them into their bags, and brought them to America by ship to find good homes, as well as the Greece story. Dogs are such intuitive creatures, knowing when you are sick or down, or when you need to be rescued. The book did a great job of showing that.

Not a book just for dog lovers but all animal lovers! You will find your heart over flowing with this wonderful collection of stories. Each dog was given his/her second chance but as you will see so were their owners. I 'am a true believer that God puts angels in our lives in many different forms, pets being one of them. This is a quick uplifting read that's sure to make you give your dog an extra snuggle, or perhaps rescue one who needs a second chance. I highly recommend you fetch this one right up!

So this book is a collection of true short stories by various writers about dogs. The arrangement of stories flows so well from one story to the next. What I liked the best about it is that the stories are each unique, be it how the dog came to the owner, if the dog “rescued” the owner or the owner “rescued” the dog, or just generally the sweet connection you can feel between the humans and dogs in the stories. Even for “non-dog people” I highly recommend this book for the touching messages of these stories! They are quick reads and you can easily pick it up and finish it! Great read!a

True Stories of the Dogs We Rescue and the Dogs Who Rescue Us

This book is a compilation of 36 dog stories. Most of these dogs were dogs that were rescued, either from the side of the road, a foster dog system, etc. The stories then go on to show how they helped their owners, either by just being a companion when they most needed one, saving their lives in a literal physical sense, or just being a big help in alerting them to trouble, etc.

I found the stories quite interesting: the lengths people go to save dogs that have been abandoned. I don't think I had any idea that there was such a thing as a foster dog system. I especially liked the stories of the dogs who were active physically in protecting their owners or the dogs who overcame their own fear when it was to help their owners.

While I am not a dog person, as in kissing and petting and hugging and having a dog in the house, etc. I was a little saddened that people would just abandon their dogs to their own fate, whatever that might be. That is mean. And while I am not likely to ever adopt a rescued pet, I have respect for those that do.

If you have a dog lover in your family, this would make a good gift for their birthday or Christmas. It's nice in that it is a lot of short stories so you can pick up and read for five minutes and read a full story or two.
