Winning the Battle for Your Mind, Will and Emotions

Rate this book
The most important battle you face is the battle for your mind, will, and emotions. Why? Because it greatly determines how much of God and his kingdom you will experience while you're on earth. The thoughts we entertain, the words we speak, and the choices we make shape and influence not only our reality, but all of creation.

The enemy loves to highlight our temporary challenges; poke at our feelings and stir up fear, frustration, doubt, and self-pity; and get us mired in murmuring and complaining.
Yet the Bible shows us that all of heaven is available to us right now.

In these pages you will discover the secret of the incredible power of Christ in you . When you learn how to access his ever-present power and goodness, feelings and fears will no longer control you. You
will go from being overwhelmed to being an overcomer.

Heaven is only a decision away. How will you choose?

WHY I CHOOSE THIS BOOK:

The more studying I do, the more I realize how important my thoughts and emotions are. This seemed like a great book to read to get a better grasp on the subject.

WHAT I THOUGHT OF THIS BOOK:

I have mixed feelings about this book because there was a ton I liked a lot, but then some stuff that annoyed me a bit, so I thought I'd do a Pros and Cons list.

Pros:
-This book is full of really good information that I think a lot of people really need to implement into their lives
-The author uses examples from his own life which makes it feel authentic and relatable
-For the most part he has what seems like a balanced view with the things he says
-He backs up his claims with the Bible, which is something I really look for in Christian nonfiction
-The points he makes are really solid and (for the most part) are statements I can get fully behind and support

Cons:
-The first half of the book felt redundant. I'm not sure if that's because I already knew a lot of the information or if he really did say basically the same thing over and over again in slightly different ways
-There were several interpretations from the Bible that he made that I didn't fully agree with
-He was more adamant about various other things than I feel like is supported in scripture, and while I think most people do that (me included) it rubbed me the wrong way

CONCLUSION:

After I got through the first (redundant) part of the book I found it to be interesting, thought-provoking, note-taking-worthy, and to be full of information that I'm now taking steps to implement in my life.

Also, cool note: The author describes a "mysterious illness" throughout the first part of the book and I kept being like "Oh yeah, he has Lyme disease." And, yup. That's what it was.

RATING:

I'm giving Winning the Battle for Your Mind, Will and Emotions 4 out of 5 Stars and recommend it to people who want to grow closer to God and realize that what we say and think really does make a difference.

Yo folks, I got this book free so I could write this review. But yeah, all thoughts and such are my own. ;)

I liked most of the teaching in this book. Hotchkin says that we are designed to be in harmony, body, soul and spirit in relationship and agreement with God. Whether that happens depends upon the soul. We choose to follow God's ways or not. It's all about choice.

He introduced a new concept to me in that our born again spirit is perfect. It is always in harmony with God and submitted to the leading of the Holy Spirit. We face the choice of having our body and soul is alignment with our spirit. We much choose what is in alignment with God's Word. That's where the enemy attacks, to get our soul to make choices not agreeing with God's Word.

I like his idea of the “divine setup.” God allows us to experience adversity to point out areas where we are not in line with His will. I like his teaching on the power of the will as well as his chapter on emotions. It is all about choice, such as choosing to have joy in the midst of adversity, just like Paul did while in jail.

I like that Hotchkin has included Battle Keys at the end of each chapter. They are practical ways to apply the truths of the chapter to life.

There is one area in the book with which I had difficulty. I understand the importance of the words we say but I think Hotchkin goes way too far with the concept of the power of human words. He writes, “You are made in the image of the Great I AM, so you should never make an “I am” statement about yourself that you would not make about Him.” (196) Oh, so I should never say that I am human or that I am so many years old? Our words do carry power but I think we need to be reasonable in this area. Certainly there is a difference between the creative words of God and our words.

There is a good deal of helpful teaching in this book. I would just offer a bit of caution when it comes to the teaching on the power of human words.

Food for thought: “Choosing to live in victory is choosing to focus on the Good News, even in the midst of challenging circumstances. “ (213).

I received a complimentary egalley of this book from the publisher. My comments are an independent and honest review.

This book blew my mind. He described me in ONE SENTENCE. I liked his take that we are three-in-one since we were created in the image of the Three-in-One. He isn't saying we are God, but made in His image. Soul, spirit and body. That's how we can be so disjointed, if our mind isn't one with the body and the soul, or if any one part isn't lined up properly, we aren't happy, whole or one with the Creator. I never thought of it in that way before, but it makes so much sense to me.

I honestly can't say enough positive about this book and how it hit me. This is a purchase, book-book, keeper and gift to others for me.

5, I don't want to ruin it for the reader of my review, just get the book and read it, stars.

My thanks to NetGalley and Chosen Books for an eARC copy of this book to read and review.

I am highly interested in the topic of this book, as my own book "Transforming Your Thought Life: Christian Meditation in Focus" will be published later this year. This book is a powerful resource for transforming your thoughts and learning how they affect all parts of your being.

Robert Hotchkin writes from a somewhat charismatic perspective in this book. It's different from what I normally read as a conservative Christian, but I found his insights to be practical and rooted in Scripture. In each chapter, he carefully unpacks his main point and how it applies to your thought life, leaving you with a strong takeaway.

He shares personal testimonies of how God helped him overcome chronic illness and other struggles by refocusing his mindset. I found his stories to be uplifting and inspiring. One story I enjoyed was when Robert was at a photo shoot. He doesn't particularly like having his photo taken, and he was in a grumpy mood which was showing on his face. The photographer then asked him to think about his wife, which totally changed his demeanor. He writes:

"The only thing that changed during that photo shoot was the kind of thoughts I allowed to fill my mind. The lighting...backdrop...clothes...photographer...camera did not change. My thoughts changed. And that shifted everything."

This story is a good example of how Robert uses a practical example to make a spiritual point. I highlighted many key teachings in each chapter, and I think you will also find helpful applications from this interesting book.

Favorite Quotes from Winning the Battle:

If God seems to be taking longer than expected, it is simply because He is about to exceed our expectations.

The divine setup of His shakings helps reveal any inferior systems we have come into agreement with, so that they can be removed and replaced with His truth.

In His goodness, He wants to help you see anywhere that you are believing, agreeing with or relying on an inferior system of self, as opposed to resting and trusting in Him and His eternal Kingdom.

Not many books rock my world, but this one has. I am so much more aware of my thoughts and feelings and questioning why I am reacting the way I do. Why am offended? Why am I irritated? What good does it do?

None.

I have the power to choose how I react and feel, but I am giving my circumstances power and they really have none.

As I read this book I often found myself in tears as God revealed new truths to me.

Here are a couple of quotes from the book and reached out and grabbed my heart:

“I was irritated because I was choosing to be irritated. I was feeling powerless because I was not exercising power over myself.”

“God shakes what can be shaken, so that His unshakable Kingdom that He has given you in its fullness can be revealed not just to you, but for you.”

“God’s promise to you is that He will shake what can be shaken so that it can be replaced with something greater, more glorious and divinely certain.”

Love this!

A copy of this book was given to me. All opinions are my own.

I read this book right on time! One of the fiercest battle anyone goes through is the battle of the mind, will, and emotions. It taps into your inner being and causes you to really dig deep in self-reflection. Hotchkin does a great job of providing practical ways to apply truths which he calls battle keys after each chapter. Some chapters also include some biblical affirmations to remind us of our identity in God, for example, "I am made in the image of God."

This will definitely change your perspective on how to confront your daily spiritual battles! I highly recommend this book for family devotion time, men, women, & young adult ministries. My opinion if the reader is truly willing to be open to the writing in conjunction with the Holy Scripture this book will bring a personal revival that will pour out onto others!

I received a copy of this book by Chosen publishers in exchange for my review, all opinions are my own.

I wanted to read this book because the description said you will learn to stop your feelings and fears from controlling you. I do not feel I attained that skill from this book. There were some beneficial insights, just not what I was looking for.

I received this galley from NetGalley.
