This book is meant for teens to older adults of all educational levels who aspire to spiritual growth; it's also a great aid for parents and grandparents who need help in teaching children and young people how to grow in God. There are many Catholics who are not familiar with having a plan of life that includes these basic elements. Many Catholics would like to grow spiritually, but don't know where to start and welcome this kind of practical, doable approach
I enjoyed this book and found it helpful in thinking about a rule of life. It's full of practical ideas and very encouraging! Great book to start the year with!
As Taylor Swift reminds us (and thanks for the original quote, Ben Franklin): “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.” I’m grateful that a priest recommended this book to me, a simple yet effective practical guide to spiritual growth. The main idea is that, like with any goal planning, one must actually take the time to reflect on where their relationship with God is right now, and about what real steps they can take to grow closer to Him. I would recommend this book to all Catholics, especially those feeling lukewarm and in need of concrete ideas for incorporating faith into their lives though daily, weekly, and yearly habits.
The book reads very easily and Landry's approach is direct and compelling. It's a bit of a "Seven Habits of Highly Effective People," with a focus on building a religious life. Like any self-help book, it emphasizes good time management, prioritization, and routine.
Has reading this book helped me adopt better routines in my life (and made me aware of my spiritual shortcomings)? Absolutely, and for that it should be lauded.
But the one area I grapple with regarding the "Your goal should be to get into heaven; let's reverse engineer how to get there" style books, is that I cannot help but feel spiritual growth is not so formulaic. There is no factory approach to creating Saints. The book focuses on routines intended to bring you closer to God, yet how many people end-up finding a different god (i.e. routine). My sense is that Jesus' message cannot be so easily boiled down to a Visio workflow diagram.
That said, it did allow me to question my prioritization in life, and for that, I think this book is effective. Just like with exercise, there's 100 excuses not to pray or go to church or go to confession, etc. The book made me question my time allocation (Why can't I say a daily Rosary? Can I not devote 15 minutes a day to meditation/prayer? What else am I doing with that time?)--and I think all those questions are good. For that, I give this book 5 stars.
Simple yet has great transformative potential. I read this book at the perfect time in my life. I’m considering buying this for every graduating senior who doesn’t go on to do ministry full-time. Would highly recommend!
An excellent guide for those who want to start a serious prayer life or an excellent refresher for those who might be feeling a bit stale in their daily prayer. Father Landry gives you step by step activities to help yon your way. This is my second read of this book, perfect of Lent, and it’s a must add to your spiritual reading library!
Important little book about possibilities in spiritual growth toward an intimate relationship with GOD out of which flow our true identity, mission and destiny. It presents a genuine training plan for holiness.
