1 grumpy bear 2 uninvited skunks 3 mice throwing a party
. . . and it only gets worse from there.
Long-suffering Bruce once again contends with an increasingly crowded household, this time in an original board book where young ones can count the never-ending party guests. Full of fun characters and humor, 1 Grumpy Bruce is just right for our littlest readers.
This is one adorable counting book. I read it to my 2 year old grandson and he giggled the whole way. He was counting with me and loved the silly geese. It's a great book and a wonderful addition to any child's library.
Oh, Bruce, I adore you! Your grumpiness makes you even more endearing to me, and this is how a board book should be--simple text and illustrations that complement the text. Thank you!
One grumpy bear and a crowded house of animals. Can Bruce learn to have fun? The illustration are cute and reflective of the Bruce books. The text is simple and does a great job of introducing young children to numbers 1 to 10. A fun read aloud for bedtime or anytime, parents and young children will enjoy reading this together.

First sentence: 1 Grumpy bear, 2 uninvited skunks, 3 mice throwing a party, 4 geese helping...
Premise/plot: BRUCE is ONE grumpy bear. He is NOT having a good day. Will he still be grumpy at the end of the book?!
My thoughts: I loved, loved, loved Ryan T. Higgins' Mother Bruce. If you haven't read that picture book, you should seek it out. It's WONDERFUL. I really enjoyed revisiting this character in this counting board book. Bruce is a FABULOUS character. The illustrations are super-fun.
I personally thought this book about a grumpy bear enduring multiple different animals was enjoyable and that the lay out was perfect for young readers. It has a whimsical art design that captures the comical antics of the animals as they try to bring joy to the grumpy Bruce. It is a simple book meant to help teach young children how to count, but along with the numeral values, the author is still able to add characteristics to the animals with little additional text that makes this story entertaining for even adult readers.

AUDIENCE APPEAL: HIGH
Yeah Bruce! Higgins dives into a fun counting book that also manages to tell a simple, very Bruce story along the way. I can’t get enough of Bruce, myself, so I was delighted to see him this way.
The most lovable and huggable grumpy bear, Bruce, is back in two new stories. In both 1 Grumpy Bruce and Santa Bruce, Ryan T. Higgins uses his signature laugh-out-loud humor, amusing storytelling, and engaging illustrations to charm and excite little readers. Bruce and his furry companions are a wildly fun and unforgettable bunch!
A counting book featuring the characters from the Bruce books, starting with one grumpy bear, Bruce himself.
I don't know how much you'd get out of this if you weren't familiar with the Bruce books, but for those who do know the Bruce books this is an adorable and fun counting book. The four page with the geese all over Bruce was my favorite.
That grumpy bear, Mother Bruce, is back in this amusing board book, resisting all efforts to get him to join the fun. As the counting kicks off with "1 grumpy bear," a series of animals appear, all joining the party started by the three mice (naturally). At the end of the book however, the reader still encounters "1 grumpy bear...."
Having enjoyed all eight of the large-format picture books about Bruce and his family of goslings and mice, I picked up 1 Grumpy Bruce: A Counting Book with some anticipation, sure that (if nothing else) I would appreciate author/illustrator Ryan T. Higgins' droll artwork. Happily, I can report that this is in fact the case—as always, the visuals here tickle my funny bone, as Bruce resists all efforts at getting him to be less grouchy—but I was also amused by the text itself. I don't think I've seen a counting book before that starts at 1, and ends up at 1 again, at the conclusion. That device allows Higgins to tell a little story, in a simple board book that might otherwise only be about numbers and counting. Recommended to fans of Bruce and his adventures, and to those looking for fun counting books for babies.
It's just a counting book, but with all the cast of characters from the Mother Bruce series whom you already know and love. Bruce is a grumpy bear after my own heart, so anytime I can read him, I'm happy. And I always love Ryan T. Higgins's illustrations.
Being just a counting book, I'd keep this for my younger storytimes (numbers, parties, woodland animals, off the top of my head), but recommend it for older readers starting to read on their own who might enjoy it too.
Read this with my 7 week old. I can’t wait to go through this over and over. Yes, it’s about counting, but: every page is a different color, so we can go through it for colors. There are wildly different animals in there (woodchucks and porcupines are very exotic for a board book, and now my daughter has heard of them!). And I know that when she’s older and can sit through Mother Bruce, she will know the characters!
1 Grumpy Bruce is about a grumpy bear counting all the animals that are showing up for a party! I choose this book because I liked that it was a counting booking and the items that they choose to be counted are illustrated very well and would be easy for kids to point out and count themselves if they would like! This is a board book!
1 Grumpy Bruce is similar to other basic counting books, but I like how it includes different adjectives/verbs for the different woodland creatures that are in the story, and Bruce’s reactions were fun to watch!
