On a night like this, magic can happen. Seven couples. Seven stories. One night. A night for love.
Steve Colvin, ex-reality TV star, is trapped in a world of his own making. Refusing to let himself be outed on television, he has lived a lie ever since. It doesn't help that his brother is also gay, out and proud with a drag queen boyfriend to boot. Logically, this should make coming out easier, but it doesn't.
His self-defence mechanisms are wearing down, and Steve is in danger of losing everybody close to him as he shuts them out. But Dev, the kind-hearted nurse, keeps sticking around. And he’s the one Steve is most scared of losing, although he doesn't want to admit to himself why….
Sean Kennedy lives in the second-most isolated city in the world, thinks there are thylacines still out in the wild, and eagerly awaits the return of Twin Peaks in 2017.
I hated Steve in the other book and let me tell you he doesn't redeem himself here at all. He is a constant asshole and he knows he is which makes it worse for me. He doesn't really have a good excuse either because he has awesome people in his life. He loves his best friend but constantly fucks others guys and tells him about it all the while treating him like a whore. Dev is a doormat too which I didn't like. Just unlikable situation as a whole, I hope Connor gets his story and it's better than this one.
This story in the series centres around Steve, who we've had glimpses of in the other two stories. I think it was alluded to the fact he was in the closest in those books, so I was glad to see him get a story, and we could take his coming out journey with him. Boy, was it a journey. Steve was so far into the closet and showed all the classic signs of a closeted homophobe. I had wondered where it would take him as he wasn't in a good place. The characters were well rounded, but I couldn't like Steve as much as the others because of how he treated other people, especially those closest to him. It did feel a little clichéd in places, and the book was over too soon, but overall I enjoyed the story and the characters and looking forward to more within the series.
So this was an ok read, even though Dev is a doormat and Steve is an ass, until it all went to shit for me. It was bad enough their was a bunch of sex with Steve and someone other than Dev, BUT THEN Steve goes and has sex with this other person, then goes to Dev’s place (no shower between as far as I know) and has sex with him. YUCK, no no no. Couldn’t get back in to it after this happened. I quite like Sean Kennedy’s humour and writing style, but this was a big miss for me. Can’t recommend.
