A stunning photographic journey to the world's most iconic walking destinations.
Discover the epic drama of mountain trails, windswept coastal paths, dense forest walks and the immense canyons, glaciers and ocean vistas only your feet can take you to.
Vivid essays introduce the world’s best trekking regions – from the Himalayas to the Andes, the wilds of the Scottish Highlands to the dusty Australian Outback – exploring the challenges of walking these paths, the history of their formation and the sense of exploration and wonder to be found along these distinctive routes. Each route is accompanied by stunning photography, showcasing the variety of terrains and their magnificent vistas.
Trekking Beyond: Walk the World’s Epic Trails features the inviting photographs of Alex Treadwell, though three authors also write invitingly, even deliciously, of trailss I would like to visit or revisit in the next couple years or so, including The Nordic Trails in Sweden, Norway and Finland. Of course I’d like to hike again anywhere in the Alps; I’ve definitely set a goal to walk the Camino de Santiago in Northern Spain, a bucket list item. Wow, there are a lot of beautiful trails in this book, which a friend recommended to me. Bill Bryson would also advocate, as they do, for the Appalachian Trial (it’s been a while for me, and I only hiked two different parts of it), and Cheryl Strayed would concur with their suggestion to trek The Pacific Crest Trail, of course.
Winter is the time to plant the seeds of wanderlust, of course. And wandering on foot! An enticing book.
"I go to nature to be soothed and healed, and to have my senses put in order." -John Burroughs
The men in my family are in love with long hikes in the woods, sometimes on man-made trails and sometimes just exploring on their own. I initially bought this book for my husband but I fell in love with the gorgeous photography and then ended up reading it. Now more than ever, I am inspired to take a family trip to some of these famous hiking trails. The essays are well-written and informative. We had done some hiking in beautiful Scotland highlands and it made me want to go back.
The book covers famous long distance walks/hikes around the world: USA (Zion National Park, Hawaii both the Muliwai trail and Kalalau trail, Appalachian trail) Europe( The Haute Route) India (Himalayas) South America (Inca trail, Fitz Roy trek, Andes) and many other countries. I really enjoyed the way this book was designed and laid out for the reader. It was very thoughtfully done. I highly recommend it for inspiration for your next trip. Over 200 excellent photos in color.
The blurb promises stunning photography and it is absolutely breathtaking. I lost count of the number of ‘Oh wow!’ moments. I was particularly wowed by the scenery in Europe, India and Canada. Initially, the inaccuracies in the writing annoyed me. A dale is a valley, not a hill, and William Wordsworth didn’t ever take opium. The author thought he was being witty but witty only works when you get your facts right. I only skim read the rest of the descriptions, partly because of that, but mainly because most of the treks are familiar to me so I didn’t really need to read them and also because I didn’t want to waste any time reading that I could spend looking at the fantastic photographs. This would be a great present for a keen walker.

Trekking Beyond is a beautiful book that will have you packing your hiking boots and making plane reservations. I’ve been lucky enough to do several of the long hikes described in Trekking Beyond, including Kilimanjaro, parts of the Everest Base Camp trail, the Pacific Crest and the Inca Trail. I’ve got definite plans for others described in the book. But this is a book to stir wanderlust in anyone’s heart. This "look book” is intended to whet the appetite. It is no substitute for the planning guides of anyone serious about walking the trails. But what a “look book” it is. The beautiful photography and tempting descriptions of these walks is mouth-watering. I was doubly pleased to be introduced to some new trails as well as being reminded of some old favorites. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I suppose on many bucket lists (mine included) is the aspiration to visit and and trek some of the incredible places contained in this collection of the world's most famous and iconic walking destinations. I sadly assume that for the majority of us those bucket list wish items will remain unfulfilled but if that is sadly the case we now have the consolation of being taken on a journey via the stunning and gorgeous collection of over 200 images found in this book. This in many ways represents the archetypal coffee table book with the truly sumptuous photographs by leading photographer Alex Treadway complimented by expert narratives provided by leading trekkers, Billi Bierling, Dave Costello and Damian Hall. Along with the photographs there are maps charting the routes.
Covered here are treks that range from a day to half a year. On some you will encounter many fellow trekkers and others you will not see anyone for days. We learn of treks that can be comfortably tackled by a novice and those to be attempted only by the most experienced. With trekking routes taken from across the world from mountains to canyons, from coastal paths to forests there is a whole variety of vistas to be seen. Just to name a few the following destinations are covered, The Appalachian Trail, The Great Wall of China, Kilimanjaro and the Inca Trail. If these destinations seem too exotic and out of reach there are treks covered that are nearer to home including the The West Highland Way.
If you want to spend a couple of hours losing yourself in the wonders of the natural world that this book will be for you.
Wow, the photography in this book is truly stunning! The treks are grouped by region and include information about the area and a bit of history accompanied by gorgeous photos. My list of places I'd love to see in person someday just grew immensely!

Thank you Quatro - White Lion Publishing and Netgalley for this ARC.
This is a beautiful book with amazing photography and details of many treks . It is perfect as a coffee table book and of course to inspire the reader to explore and complete some beautiful treks.
Trekking Beyond Walks across the world's epic trails by Dave Costello, Billi Bierling, Damian Hall
Gorgeous Photos! Made this couch potato almost want to get fit enough to trek some of the trails mentioned in this book.
In addition to the beautiful photos each trail and area is discussed with information including distances to be covered, historical information, what might be seen, days it takes to cover the distance and more.
As I looked at the photos and read about the locations and history I thought of characters in novels and movies as well as historical figures that no doubt would have trekked the trails of this book.
This is a book I would love to have as an addition to my library.

Trekking Beyond is filled with breathtaking images showcasing the best trekking regions around the globe. From the Scottish Highlands to the Appalachian trail, the images in this book will tempt the reader to visit the globe's gorgeous landscapes.
This book includes maps for each region and offers useful information about the area. It covers interesting topics such as its history, the region’s weather and flora. It also includes the best trekking seasons, trek duration, and advice on accommodation. Highly recommend.

Whether you're a seasoned & well travelled walker, or just enjoy exploring via an armchair, Trekking Beyond is the book for you. Sure to inspire and evoke wanderlust, this book strikes the balance between description, information, and visuals perfectly.
In this coffee table travel book we traverse the world on foot, exploring some of the most well trod treks and trails, as well as those that see barely 100 hikers a year. You'll find 40 walks within Trekking Beyond, with them being split up and grouped together based on location. I found the formatting of this really well done, and was impressed with the variety of destinations included.
I couldn't share my thoughts on Trekking Beyond without mentioning the stunning photography that runs alongside the text; stunning is an understatement to be honest. My reading of this book was done via an e-galley copy, however I will definitely be adding a physical copy of Trekking Beyond to my own book collection; it is one of those books I see myself picking up and poring over time & time again.
Full of history, knowledge and expert insight, Trekking Beyond is an amazing catalogue of awe inspiring adventures.
Packable guide to get you where you want to be? Certainly not. Pleasantly readable summary of the world's regions with one-page introductions to some of the more famous (and outright best) distance hikes? Yes. Coffee-table book filled to bursting with the best scenery on offer in resplendent visual form? Certainly. I doubt even these contents will get some people off their couches and down the shoe shop ready for a trek, but it may have some influence. Otherwise, this is just a gift book for the explorer in your life who's never actually at home. A small audience, then, but boy this was a pleasure.
Great photographic book about the most iconic treks around the world. The photography is really beautiful and we mostly look at the pictures only! This is a great book for travellers and above all trekkers.
A beginner-level introductory book into some of the best-known hiking trails in the world.
It's not a great information source on the actual trails represented, just a brief intro into each and every one. In essence it's a coffee-table or a waiting-room book, to keep your guests' minds occupied.
Also, while the images are of high-quality, each trail is only represented by 1-2 pictures. I would have preferred to have a greater number of images per trail, rather than just 1-2 oversize ones.
