Interesting new reboot here. Harvey Dent is pretty scary and the Batman very badass. The particular edition with the Director's Cut of notes while Snyder and his team write the scenario helps to tie the pieces together. Looking forward to see where they take this. Also appreciated the b&w artwork!

Good art work. Great story lots of action. Batman "trying something new". A genuine OMG moment on the last page. The psychology game between Two Face and Batman. A great start to the series.

Harvey Dent’s split personality might be cured if only the Dark Knight can get him somewhere fast before his evil side dominates. Except Bruce is too late - Harvey’s taken a hit out on him and every crazy is crawling out of the woodwork to claim the reward. It’s a race against time on the road trip to hell for Two-Face and the Goddamn Batman!

Heh, just kidding, there’s no Goddamn Batman moment in All-Star Batman - if only! Where’s nutty ol’ Frank Miller when you need him, eh?

Scott Snyder returns to Batman without his usual partner-in-crime Greg Capullo for a new series with the new art team of John Romita Jr, Dean White, Danny Miki, Declan Shalvey and Jordie Bellaire - with even more to follow! After the disappointing end to his more-good-than-bad New 52 Batman run with that Bloom nonsense, I was hoping All-Star would be a return to form… and unfortunately it’s not.

Thankfully the status quo is reinstated with Bruce back as Batman and Gordon back as Commissioner (including full ‘tache and glasses) with nary a Mecha-Batsuit in sight. Good - let us never speak of that again! This time around, Snyder’s turned his attention to Two-Face, one of the few famous Batman rogues he’s yet to tackle, and he’s a tough one to write - I can’t recall any great Two-Face comics.

Except Snyder’s basically done a ground-up revision of the character and it feels very flawed and contrived. He has to give Harvey so much he’s never had before to make him appear threatening now: Two-Face apparently has scads of gory info on everyone who’s anyone in Gotham as well as access to the top gangs’ cash reserves?! How…? Snyder’s Two-Face seems less like a character and more like the embodiment of the plot elements needed to make this story work.

Also, instead of being good and evil from one moment to the next, Harvey now goes through periods of good and evil. Wouldn’t he kill himself during one of his good phases after realising what he’s like when he’s Mr Hyde-ing it up? And since when is there a magic location that’ll somehow cure him!?

There’s really no part of this issue that wowed me. Batman fights a couple of B-listers, ordinary people stupidly believe that Two-Face, a known liar and crook, will make good on his cash reward and act like idiots, and what the hell is Batman holding on the cover?! That’s the most unwieldy Batarang I’ve ever seen - unless it’s bat-themed climbing gear?! I’m sure it fits real snug into his utility belt…!

The backup is even worse. Batman and Duke discover cut-up victims in a textile factory or something? There’s no story, it was just included to underline that Duke, the main character from the terrible We Are Robin series, is the new Robin who’s also black. Le sigh. Diversity is fine but can we not forget that the reason most people read superhero comics is for entertainment rather than pat themselves on the back for being PC? The backup does have a curious panel though where Batman talks about someone he once tried training and failed - and it’s not Jason Todd! Hmm…

John Romita Jr and Declan Shalvey’s art is fine, Dean White and Jordie Bellaire’s colours are better, and Scott Snyder’s no-hitter streak continues. All-Star Batman #1 is a disappointing start that tells me to trade-wait this title rather than pick up the monthlies (or bi-weeklies, whatever the daffy schedule is on this one!).

Oh well. Anyways, congrats to Declan and Jordie on their engagement!

Very good! So Snyder said a while back he's leaving batman and I was quite sad, then I saw in the previews he was writing this instead! Story wise, its very good, its setting a pretty interesting batman story, heck even I don't know where its going? I'm not really a fan of John Romita Jrs, art, but it works for this story, I still miss Capullo's art, but this will do! I will recommend this book, but only when the trade comes, because $5 for every issue? Come on DC you can do better then that!

i don't think that it'd be wrong to say that Scott Snyder's return wit All-star Batman was the most anticipated Rebirth Title and one was starting to fear whether or not the anticipation and expectation will weigh the author's story down . Good for us it didn't.

Scott Snyder had told that he's gonna try and make Two-face cool again and maybe even Surpass Joker in terms of where the Villains are ranked on basis of their respective infamy. While on the basis of the first issue it's hard to tell if that's gonna happen .

The comics was well directed as we start from the get go with Batman-wink-at-your-face-and-kick--your-ass-down action and then follow it back with events that transpired half an hour ago and later few hours ago to tell the tale of a journey that Batman is taking and he's making two-face tag-along as well, but two-face isn't going to go easy at all and he's made Batman the most wanted man in gotham .

P.s i nearly forgot to mention two things
1. the new yellow suit for Duke Thomas looks awful, i mean this is worst suit i have ever seen in a batman issue, i mean i wonder if Bruce Wayne has gone a bit broke coz that suit looks cheap

2. there's a very nice twist of a betrayal , Batman betrayed by someone closest to him and although it was a great idea ,one i never saw coming i was very sorry to see it , because that particular character is one of my favourites :(

The Comics is action packed , superbly directed and looking like becoming the best series in the rebirth . The Art of John Romita . Jr is always fun to witness and the reunion of Scott Snyder and John Romita imparts the story the beauty that it deserves, eagerly awaiting for the next issues

This may not be Snyder's best work but it is way too early to judge, given that All-Star Batman has only one issue out. DKIII was too bad for its first four issues, and issue 5 was a huge improvement.

If Capullo had drawn this, the issue would get a higher reading. Nope, Romita Jr's art isn't bad, it just takes a bit of time to adjust. But I too wish that some issue or issues would bring back the dynamic Snyder -Capullo duo.

The writing style is no doubt Snyder's, with nice-to-know facts drizzled all over the pages. And I would love to see how he handles Two-Face and other Batman characters.

Batman not in the dark Gotham is also a refreshing sight to see. Farm scenes and colors are usually associated with Superman so Batman literally out in the field is gonna be interesting.

Duke is quite a charming character and I know he's going to do great things. His yellow palette costume with a helmet tells you that he is Robin and at the same time he's not.

And yeah, I want to see what that enormous Batarang is for.

What... the fuck was this? I'm sorry, but I expected better than... what this gave me considering Snyder's New 52 Batman run. The art was confusing, the story (if you can call it that) was so... i don't even know, but I stopped reading after like five pages. I'm taking this off of my pull list for sure. Maybe once this arc is over, I'll put it back. The only like I liked was Duke's costume.

'All-Star Batman #1' by Scott Snyder with art by John Romita Jr. is the beginning of a series where the villains of Batman are reimagined. In this issue, it's Two-Face.

The issue starts with Batman on the run, and two hired killers, Firefly and Killer Moth out to catch him. We then flashback to recent time, 22 minutes earlier to a scene that will be referenced later in the issue. Then we get a flashback two hours before that. There has been an acid rain attack on Gotham and Batman is about to enact a crazy plan with Two-Face. Most of the rest of the issue cuts between Batman and Two-Face on the run and people trying to catch Batman.

The flashback within a flashback within a flashback was an interesting device. I loved an unusual choice of weapon that Batman makes at one point. The art is just brilliant. I like the look of this Batman. He's got substance to the way he looks. This is a man who has trained and is not going to go down easy. Two-Face is a great character and how he is portrayed here is good.

I received a review copy of this issue from DC Entertainment and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this comic book.

I was relieved that this "didn't suck" as a friend and I were joking was the conservative level that we wanted to set our expectations. Actually, it was a pretty good start, and I don't think that it could really be terrible with Scott Snyder writing and the "all-star" cast of artists involved.

In Snyder Batman style, there's a little bit of camp, a little bit of serious, and great action, which is what I'm generally looking for in my superhero comics. I can't explain it particularly well, but the beginning of this title was somewhat jarring to read, because this is Batman intentionally outside of Gotham, and so much of Batman is rooted in Batman reflecting Gotham and vice versa.

This slightly expanded-length issue was a little choppy between the flashbacks and two storylines, but I can forgive that, since we got more pages ;)

This issue was definitely an intriguing start to me, with allusions to Alfred's secrets (Who doesn't love Alfred?), and the eventual reveal of what Lark-not-Robin's primary (bad pun) color/trait is.

I was really looking forward to this new run of All-Star Batman by Snyder. I have rather mixed feelings on this first issue, even though I mainly enjoyed it. Basically, Two-Face has multiple personalities in this issue . The good side of Two-Face contacts Batman to help him get to a destination that will allow Batman to destroy the bad face of Two-Face. The bad side of Two-Face however, puts out a bounty on freeing Two-Face from Batman's custody and killing Batman. It is a ridiculous sum of money so everyone is now trying to kill Batman. It is fun and the art by Romita Jr. was a style I've never seen on Batman, but it wasn't amazing. I'm curious to see what it goes though.

Batman must escort Two-Face to a location hundreds of miles from Gotham in order to find out information harmful to many people (good and bad). Sounds simple, but then this would be short story. Two-Face offers millions to whomever frees him. Similar in nature to the S.W.A.T. movie from a few years ago. Now everyone is after Batman, super-villains, gangsters/mob, and everyday people looking to make instant millions. Batman tried the Bat-Plane, but oops, someone had inside info (Alfred?). Now he is on the run!

Batman meets mad max fury road in this crazy road trip tale of batman taking Two Face on a cross country road trip to escape a bounty put on him by two face which forces batman to escape Gotham to ensure the safety of the city. Fun seeing scott Snyder back on the character that made him famous comic writer. Back in the saddle and ready for another wicked adventure taking him and batman out of their regular environment. Can't wait to see what happens next.

"Batman has always been a character who demands your best"~Scott Snyder

Surprise! I know I've said I only plan on reading and reviewing Tom King's series for Batman, but I decided to mix it up and add this other Bat-title on the rundown because why not? It's no secret at this point that I'm a Snyder loyalist, I must admit, and I'm very pleased that he is still writing Batman to this day and within a story premise that may prove to be less gritty and more entertaining and fun than what I'm used to from Snyder's writing and interpretation of the character. I don't think Snyder can give up Batsy that easy hence this off-beat series which promises road trips in line with a different villain to focus on for every character-centric arc. I'm down with that because Batman has the best rogues' gallery ever and I want to be reminded once more what makes them great in the first place. For this first issue, we have Harvey Dent, more notoriously known as Two-Face.

I'm reviewing a single issue, in case you didn't realize that the covers I featured above for this review are the variant colors for the first issue. It's my new thing now. I plan on posting all covers for an issue just to compare them side-by-side.

With the talents of John Romita Jr., Dean White and Danny Miki for pencils, inks and colors respectively, the first issue for All Star Batman entitled My Worst Enemy has been a mixed bag of awesome potentials and sporadic moments that baffled me all throughout. Visually speaking, it was a feast for the eyes. Everything looked vibrant and dynamic for every page, which definitely made the pacing more engaging and very action-oriented in spite of how much of Snyder's writing in general (including his dialogue) suffers expository indulgence. I definitely liked the opening sequence at the diner with Firefly and Killer Moth's attack on Batman. There was something endearingly Western about the entire tone and setting of that opener which I appreciated.

Otherwise, it's an uneven issue overall, but I blame it mostly on the needless time skips and flashbacks. As soon as I finished reading, I decided to re-read again but this time by following a more chronological sequence---and it made more sense! So I can only imagine that choosing a flashback device was just a gimmicky move for Snyder and co. which he isn't above doing, really. Still, when he had used that before in his own Batman flagship run, it was more cohesive. Here for All Star Batman, it just felt sloppy. That is my first complaint about the narrative for this issue. If Snyder just stuck to a linear progression, this issue would have been fine. Still, it didn't take away from the intriguing premise concerning Batman and Two-Face.

Now I've always found Bruce Wayne and Harvey Dent's relationship to be layered and poignant, and I also have every confidence that Snyder can deliver some emotionally resonant punches later on as this arc progresses. One of the most interesting revelations in this issue is the fact that Two-Face is color blind in his left eye. There's a metaphor about it that's poetic. Batman's decision to bring Dent/Two-Face upstate somewhere to help restore his sanity should provide readers some twisted and amusing road-trip shenanigans, especially since Dent is making it unreasonably difficult for Batsy to do this. As it turns out, Dent has garnered more connections in the criminal underworld which also made him privy with everyone's business. This enables him to emotionally blackmail people into stopping Batman's mission to go upstate and free Dent from captivity by announcing he can reveal everyone's secrets for all the public to know. I think that's the basic gist of it. That explains why even simple civilians like the ones at the diner impeded Batman's escape with Dent. Before we go on, here's a cool panel of Batsy stalking the fields:

And now for my second complaint which might be a small nitpick: what is up with Duke Thomas, really? I don't want to jump into the bandwagon of Not Giving New Characters A Chance, but what has he done to deserve such a crucial role for the Rebirth Batman storyline anyway? I don't think he has earned his place beside Batman nor has he really grown and developed into a character I can honestly say is one I will actively root for from this point on. Correct me if I'm wrong but was he also the one who helped Bruce Wayne remember who he was back in Superheavy arc when his entire identity had been erased? How the hell did a complete stranger manage to do that? I might be misremembering a few details because I've been away for so long, but Duke Thomas certainly left no impression on me while I was reading Endgame or Bloom. But he's here now and I just have to get on with it? Look, all we're told is that he's just a good kid who is capable of becoming a part of Batman's crusade, and yet the readers are not shown as to WHY and HOW that is the case. He just shows up in Rebirth issue one day and accepts Batman's offer to become 'something better' than Robin. Excuse me, but what in the name of Mary Poppins' frock does that even mean, 'something better'?

First of all, that's very rude and an outright disservice for what all each Robin stood for as Batman's partner that went beyond being his underage sidekick. I know Duke Thomas must soon play an important role later on since all this hype about his character makes me believe that this will be the case, but can we all calm the fuck down and desist telling readers so early that he is 'something better' than Robin? That's a shitty thing to say about a character who has been a part of the Batman mythos for a very long time. I also don't think Snyder is giving his original character a fair fighting chance to prove himself as one day becoming awesome with his own making by just declaring him as someone above the Robin title already. Let Duke Thomas grow and develop as a hero I want to root for, much like Peter J. Tomasi did when he wrote Damian Wayne.

And yes, I still maintain that I am a Snyder loyalist but the biggest fan can also be the harshest critic. That's how much Scott Snyder as a Batman writer means so much to me; I truly want him to give his best for a character like Batman who deserves it the most, and so I would point out things I feel he must work on to improve his story for All Star Batman. I only want him to succeed.

There's also a backup story called The Cursed Wheel whose pencils and colors I actually prefer more than Romita Jr.'s work, surprisingly enough. I don't have much to say about this story yet since it's in its initial stages, and also because Duke Thomas is here again and I'm still pretty salty about this character for now. Anyway, I have only the highest hopes for All Star Batman. There are weaknesses here to overcome for the narrative's approach but I can't wait to read more of the next issues to see how Snyder will improve upon this debut issue. I'm certain he has more surprises up his sleeve! Like a chainsaw-wielding Batsy!

I love what Snyder did with Batman in New 52 and I was a little bit sad that he's not going to continue writing it, but after I've seen this, I was excited. I still kinda miss Greg Capullo's art, but Romita Jr. did a great job (even though I'm not a huge fan of his previous work). It was fast paced, packed with interesting things and it made me really excited for whatever comes next. Definitely worth your time!

Not sold on the art but this gritty take on the dark knight is very strong. I'm almost at the point of dropping a few issues just to eliminate some of the clunky ones. Scott Synder had an impressive run with Batman during the hit and largely missing 52 series, he threw the rule book out and messed with convention. I'm loving this new series and I hope he takes a Batman mythology much like miller did with Dark Knight Returns. This series is off to a cracking Start

Excellent!!!

This is an excellent start to a new way of telling Batman. The mood of the story seems much bigger than Batman Rebirth. It feels like older Batman stories. If you are a fan of Batman you do not want to miss this.

Snyder made Batman a top title during the new52, and this continuity-light series starts as an ''All Star'' line title should, With an all star writer and artist (Romita Jr. at main story, Declan Shalvey at backup tale) grabbing the interest of the reader with familiar characters in a setting were all bets are off. My only complain is that Romita Jr. is not my top choice as an artist for this, but he manage to draw in a way that I at least can get a sense of the action.

This is a good jumping on point for people who would like to start reading montly issues (knowing this will be a limited series down the road) of the dark knight with the best of the bunch in the industry, and kind of the parrallel of All Star Superman we wished Miller and Lee's (unfinished) volume some years ago should have been.

I really enjoyed this, but then I always was a sucker for JRjr's art.
The story is essentially an extended chase/fight scene as Batman and Two-Face go on a little road trip away from Gotham, mayhem ensues of course, as nearly every costumed mercenary in the DC universe turns up to take a turn at disposing of our hero.

Simple, direct, but exciting plot, great art, lovely colours and some nice dialogue "hrm" make this a clear winner for me, more please.

Firstly, the timeline constantly jumping around is annoying and felt the same about the Game of Thrones book series. There's some action and some "good guy" stuff going on, but I don't really see much that makes this guy very batman-like except for the gadgets. Alfred even less so. There's an extortion scheme going on, but not really in any particularly interesting way. It's kind of a muddled mess for me. The Snickers ad at the beginning is brilliant though.
