From the writer of Ghost Hunter, Little Women with Big Guns and Krakenstein vs. Koalatron comes an unforgettable excursion into the depths of the unknown. Loaded end to end with chills, this terrifying narrative is loosely based on accounts of encounters with the legendary Pukwudgie, a cryptozoological "myth" originating in Massachusetts' mysterious Bridgewater Triangle. Transplanting the action to his familiar Midwestern environs, writer Kevin Candela takes the reader on a hair-raising excursion into a shadowy world that exists in plain sight right beside our own, sending the tale's narrator deep into a frozen marsh in mid-January in search of the diminutive yet incredibly frightening entity. When he finally discovers the truth, both he--and the reader--will never be the same again.

** I received this audiobook in exchange for a honest review**

the sound quality of this audiobook was great. I had no issues with it. Gary Bennett read it and he did fantastic. I bumped my rating up 1 star just for him. He has a very lovely voice.

The story, however, was no so great. Kevin moves into this house to capture a cryptozoological creature then tortures it and gets pissed when it fights back. ugh. what the hell did you expect would happen dude?! In the description the author says it's a Pukwudgie but they never call it that in the book, only Imp which had me picturing it as the imps in world of warcraft lol!
With all this being said, I would still give the author another try.

A surprisingly decent short story here by Kevin Candela. I wasn’t sure how this would go down, but I fancied something quick to listen to and gave it a whirl and was pleasantly surprised.

The narrator did a relatively good job, but his voices for anyone but the main character were too weak and even when the main character was meant to be yelling something his voice was too weak and quiet. It was like he recorded the narration at home and didn’t want to wake the baby!

The story though, really was quite a treat.
So the main character lives in a small town in, I want to Massachusetts? Where there is a local legend of an Imp that terrorises people a bit. Think a reason to not let the kids out after dark, that sort of deal.
Our main guy decides he is going to head out to catch this creature, and prove the legend true. He heads out into the marsh, finds where the creature would live and then heads back out again the next day with better supplies with which to catch it.
Upon catching it, he heads back home and, struggling with the reality of the thing, takes to the beers. He comes round and realises it’s time to do something about the creature (which begins comically throwing its poop at him, cheeky monkey style). Our man takes the creature to the basement to save his living room (poop is bad for your feng shui), and shuts the cage down there so he can get some shut eye and a clear head.
The next morning the creature has escaped the cage, and basement, and the only sign is a small disc of lint by the front door. He pops it in a jar and calls his crazy mate from work.
Said mate comes over to see the enigma for himself and sends our main man out for beers as payment for his helping out. Once returned with good said beers, our guy fins his work mate standing in the basement brandishing 2 screwdrivers and a manic grin on his face. After a quick bit of gory horror, our main man decided enough is enough and takes the Imp back to it’s home where we are greeted with a strange and unexpected little twist in the tale (which I will leave for you to experience).

A great little tale which flows nicely!

If I rate on writing I’d give it more stars.
This is the story of a person devoid of empathy. Aside from the drunken idea it would be cool to catch a myth, I saw not point to why he insisted on capturing the imp.
“I shook the cage a couple of times and watched it slide around on the sheet metal floor. I shook it a little harder, and watched Impy flop around like a corpse. My nerve was coming back and .... I shook cage even harder, hard enough to bang Impy off the cage bars a few times... just to keep it unconscious, you know.” And all this after he ruined one of its eyes! At this point I was hoping for a miraculous escape and a deep well deserved bite to the man in retaliation from the poor Imp. When it did retaliate the guy got angry at it and got more aggressive.

I must say, this behaviour towards another living thing repulses me, it’s like the kid with a magnifying glass chasing ants. I had a hard time reading about this man’s actions and finishing the book. However, I wondered where the story was headed and I’d agreed to review it, so I trugged on. There is a conclusion to the story and I think the result had to do with the guy’s lack of empathy.

This is the first book I’ve read/listened to by this author. I would not say this was a poorly written book so I would be willing to listen to another by this author.

This is the first book I’ve listened to by this narrator (Garry Bennett) and I would listen to another. There were few characters in this short story so not many distinct voices were needed, but he did well bringing this story to life.

There are no explicit sex scenes, excessive violence or swearing.

This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this unbiased, voluntary review.

I listened to the audiobook by Gary Bennett.

This book may have been the strangest thing I have ever listened to. I’m still not sure if it was brilliant or if I’m still recovering from shock.

The short story was written well, but not impressive. I definitely felt that the confused and scared average joe of a protagonist was written as he should be. Impy seemed to be whatever the author wanted, had random powers, and was a disgusting and hated creature. All in all, the story was well written and didn’t try to be something it wasn’t.

Gary Bennett was an okay performer. When he was talking (except at the end), I felt my mind wandering and finding it hard to pay attention. I contribute this to Bennett’s monotone voice and smooth delivery. But when I was focused, I throughly enjoyed listening to him.

I had requested and received audiobook version of this book for free from the narrator, in exchange for an unbiased review.

This is a 2 hour long, well paced horror story. Even though the main character isn't likable and I didn't root for him to win. The "monster" here was a little confusing. Still, once the stake was established, it was a thrilling ride. The story isn't rushed and plays out at a comfortable pace. At the end, I would say it was an alright story. Nothing very memorable but just alright.

Gary Bennett's narration was the best part of the book. His voice kept the tension built and kept me invested in it.

This was a difficult book to rate. I really liked the beginning and end. There was only one section I didn't like and that was a bit in the middle of the story that took place in the home. I hate giving anything away so I keep it intentionally vague.

It was an inventive story that seemed older than it was. For most of it, I got the impression of an Ambrose Bierce era tale which I loved. If I could take out the middle of the story I would have given it a 4*.

This is a dark story that dives right into the swampy world of myth and cryptozoology, and that's a world that fascinates me. Gary Bennett really did a great job with the narration of this rather wild tale... he made me believe it was the truth he was relating to me!
If you like Dark Fantasy with a touch of Horror, and you dare to step into the swamp, then this short story is exactly what you need!

A short tale of a man who has a run in with an urban (rural?) legend. The story is entertaining as his cynicism changes to disbelief and then the irrational as things go from the bad to worse. The narrator does a good job portraying the protagonists fraying state of mind, and the tale is a good one, and a short read/listen.

Got a couple of hours to listen/read? Check it out.

...”Screw this! I hightailed it back to the house so fast, I beat the hell out of myself, slipping and sliding .... I was four deep in a six pack before I was calm enough ....”

The suspense, horror, and the unknown kept me glued to listen to this ‘til the end.
It was a delightful little book of terror, climaxing and ending before I was read to let go.

I would have liked a little bit more about the creatures at the end, but overall satisfying and good literature!
