Dino Wars

Rate this book
If the asteroid that killed dinosaurs 65 million years ago had been half as big, only dinosaurs in the Americas would have died. Mammals would have evolved without dinosaurs on South America Island until a land bridge connected it with North America, three million years ago. The smartest raptor, troodon, grew twice as big above the Arctic Circle because harsh conditions rewarded intelligence. Their descendants may have ruled the world when modern humans first encountered dinosaurs in North America.

This epic fantasy thriller is what a world war between people and smart raptors may look like. Fifteen million raptors from Asia invade the Americas and orphan a precocious boy, who devotes himself to their extermination. He needs friends to take the fight to the enemy, but his obsession with avenging his parents blinds him to his closest friend, while traitors within his own family ally with raptors to replace him at the top of the food chain. It’ll take all his wit to save his loved ones from the raptor army marching to eat him.

Dino Wars by Brent Reilly is a book I won on Goodreads Giveaway. It is an interesting read where dinosaurs evolved along with man and dinos too developed higher brain function. It is about a war against man and dinosaurs. Many wars. Someone wrote this would be a good book for kids- NOT! Not only it is gory but there is a lot of things in here that kids do not need to hear, example... in one scene the humans are going to retreat and someone yells, "Sodomy attack". I don't think kids need to read this. It was interesting but the characters were not well developed, rather flat, and I couldn't really tell you much about the world other than that dinos lived there too. No world building at all.

Great for Kids!
An epic creative thrilling and adventurous story – which is interestingly enough focused on the idea of if Dinosaurs were still alive today, and smarter, how will humans deal with them. Kit has devoted himself to exterminate these men eating Raptors, but his journey is long, challenging and difficult as these monsters are on the move to kill his family. The story is different, kids will surely fall in love with Kit, his funny and smart character. The author’s research on Dino surely shows up and adds up to make this informative too and creativity and future thought make it captivating.

I won this in a goodreads drawing.

Evolved Dinosaurs are trying to invade the land of the humans, and only a kid with a knack for killing dinos can stop them.

Pretty lame. No characterization, no tension, not even much of a plot.

Dino-mite!!!

This is not only a book, it is an epic adventure. I did not want it to end. Kit started a war at the age of 8. He died at 108 years old. The century he lived was not devoted to war, but it took war to make peace. I have never read a book like this before...just blew me away! If you like action and adventure, read this book. If you don't... well sit up there and wonder what you are missing. Your loss

‘Against thousands leaving, one raptor came to ask for him by name. Kit climbed the wall and saw a familiar face.’

Florida author Brent Reilly bounces onto the sci-fi fantasy scene with five books to his credit already. Brent is a multi-talented movie star handsome young man whose father was a magazine editor so he comes by his talent honestly. But Brent lived in Colombia for a time, is bi-lingual Spanish, has a Masters degree in counseling, is a husband and father and has owned an indoor bounce house, auto repair center, and computer training school. His creative goal: to entertain with his wildly imaginative novels whose characters are like real people, with backgrounds and motives, who must act consistently with their personalities. From his provided bio as well as from the manner in which he writes, the reader can sense that this is a talent worth following!

As in other of his popular novels Brent serves the reader an appetizer with a Preface before the curtain opens on scene one: ‘60,000 years B.C. The old historian struggled up the stage. Thousands of tribal leaders surrounded him in the circular auditorium to hear plans for surviving the raptor invasion. A million visitors flooded Canal City, the most fortified settlement in the Americas. A hushed silence greeted the orator. "For the first time in 65,000 years, a dinosaur from Asia has crossed into Alaska." This was not news. It's why so many traveled to Panama for the first Transcontinental Congress in centuries. "Given the historic nature of this event, we should review our history before discussing our response. We need perspective, as much as information. "Our oldest myths agree humans lived in South America without dinosaurs. Adventurers moved north by boat and came back to tell stories of herbivores as big as mountains, carnivores taller than trees, and talking raptors as smart as people. Over millions of years, a tougher environment made Northerners taller and smarter. They invented writing, math, astronomy, the solar calendar, fire-starting, and the wheel. They trained horses, eagles, and direwolves to fight a never-ending war against smart raptors. "Then, 3 million years ago, a land bridge connected North and South America, so they built a fort, on the very ground we stand on. It stood for thousands of years, until a raptor army used giant sauropods to crush our barriers. Raptors then wiped out everyone in South America. Northerners fled to nearby islands, but we know Southerners have no descendants because cave drawings show them to be shorter, wider, and hairier. “After losing the 1st War, our ancestors dug a wide canal, just north of us, because raptors are lousy shipwrights. They have two finger-like claws and a thumb, so our best guess is they lack the dexterity to make quality tools. After the canal, it took us a million years to kill every raptor in South America. Humans grew even taller and smarter from winning the 2nd War. Over another million years, we took everything east of the Rocky Mountains and spent millennia fortifying the Colorado River to the Sea of Cortez.’

We can sense Brent’s depth of perception in the knowledge of his time living in South America as he develops this reasonable and startling epic. As he summarizes the plot, ‘If the asteroid that killed non-avian dinosaurs, 65 million years ago, had been half as big, only dinosaurs in the Americas would have died. Mammals would have evolved in South America Island without dinos, until a land bridge connected it with North America, 3 million years ago. The smartest raptor, troodon, had an opposable thumb and grew twice as big above the Arctic Circle (as in Texas) because harsh conditions rewarded intelligence. Given 65 million more years to become smarter, their descendants may have ruled the world when modern humans first encountered dinosaurs in North America. This epic fantasy thriller, in the tradition of Jurassic Park and Lord of the Rings, is what a world war between people and smart raptors may look like. Twice as tall and several times as heavy as man, 15 million raptors invading the Americas from Asia orphan a precocious boy who devotes himself to the extermination of these man-eaters in this fast-paced action adventure. He must make friends and allies to take the fight to the enemy. But his obsession with avenging his parents blinds him to his closest friend and traitors within his own family ally with raptors to replace Kit at the top of the food chain. It’ll take all his wit to save his loved ones from the raptor army marching to kill him.’

In this book ‘for all ages’ once again a child is the hero – young Kit – and Brent’s use of children as heroes is endearing to all. There are so many fine aspects to his writing that attempting to list them would take pages. Suffice it to say that ‘all of a sudden’ we have a master story entertainer – and welcome to the literary world!

Dino Wars is a saga based on a war between humans and the raptors (dinosaurs). The time frame is set thousands of years ago and here the raptors are shown as intelligent creatures who can engage in systematic attack and knows how to camouflage themselves to hide from humanity. The book is gory, adventurous and mixed with history. The old time has all the modern names of continents and cities intake to avoid any type of confusion.
The first few pages were a bit boring and confusing as the author Brent Reilly hoarded us with information. However, the beauty of the story started developing as soon as the initial ground work was laid and soon enough we got to know that a mere boy of 8 years of age is going to be our hero. Reilly produces some extremely terrible scenes like the first battle where kit loses both his parents. The tragic description of their death where the raptors opened up the mother's womb to spill out the fetus is both heart wrenching and grim.
Reilly equips his heroes with some special quality. Here Kit is a great climber and could climb any place with ease and swiftness. He is also an expert with slings and could fight a war with the help of sling and lead pellets.
The book has many exciting moments and the war seems to go on for infinity. The book could be read to children with parental guidance and boys specifically would love the story.

Brent Reilly takes the fear created by Jurassic Park a step closer as millions of raptors organize armies to defeat humans. Dino Wars have been raging for thousands of years. Each year the humans monitor depths of rivers, height of glaciers, and where the raptors are congregating to decipher when and where they will attack again. As an eight year old boy, Kit Taca has perfected the use of a sling to prevent boredom on his father’s ship. Little did they know this skill would win one battle after another and his observation of the enemy allowed him to predict their next move. He was able to climb high enough to stay out of the raptors reach while killing or injuring them. He became known as Death to the dinosaurs.

I enjoy the action Brent Reilly puts in all his novels. There is so much in the books I often wonder what else could happen and I am not even half way through the story. I have notice Reilly is a champion of improving human condition through clean water, safe places to live, and education; he often has his main characters heroes of those who cannot help themselves.

Brent Reilly, having recently read the over-the-top ‘Deadly Wands’ I was excited to read this new entry of his work and I was left in awe, another masterpiece.
First, I’m not a fan of dinosaurs, yes I had seen the Jurassic Park film series but it’s nothing out of the ordinary, dinosaurs are just the cause of destruction for those movies so I was a little off about this book, but thank God I still give it a try.
Dinosaurs did not extinct, they stay on Earth and they evolve into another smart species among the many inhabiting our planet, there has been an ongoing war between humans and dinosaurs for a long time, but that is coming to an end. Words fell short when it comes to describe this; an epic tale is rising, and for one person, this war will only bring peace for his loved ones and the world.
You definitely don’t want to miss this book, this is an epic tale, it can easily compares with adventures as big as The Lord of The Rings or more, you will never see dinosaurs in such approach, a truly amazing work.

Parts of this book were pretty funny, and while it wasn't a bad read, the outcome was never in doubt after the first few pages. This made the story more of a drag than anything else. It's not a bad story, it's just entirely too obvious the outcome, so the story really doesn't tell us anything we don't already know, so the most entertainment value you can get out of it is the insults, which admittedly some of them were pretty amusing, but the fight scenes were just more of the same, and
most of the other developments were kind of just slapped on as an afterthought is what it seemed like to me. So, although the story was fairly decent, I don't really recommend it unless you just like to read about distruction on a massive scale, because other than the amusing yelled insults, there's really not enough here to make it worth the time it took to read it in my opinion. I'd happily skip this one, and go read another book with more depth to the storyline, and way more character development.

Great book for teens who love dinosaurs or science fiction.

Dino Wars by Brent Reilly is an interesting twist on sci envy fiction. If it didn’t take place thousands of years ago, I would compare it to Jurassic Park. So the time frame is new, the story/plot maybe not so much. I’m not going to lie, unless you’re very interested in the “history” of dinosaurs, the preface may put you to sleep. I’m pretty sure I dozed off a time or two. But I stuck with it. The story basically covers a way between dinosaurs and humans. The main human being an eight year old kid named Kit who pretty much saves humanity by taking on the dinosaurs. I think younger teens who are into science fiction or dinosaurs or maybe even older teens who are into science fiction or dinosaurs would really enjoy this book. It’s well written. There are some exciting parts that keep you turning pages. I’d probably read more from Brent Reilly, it was a good book.

“Dino Wars” is Brent Reilly’s fantastic interpretation of what would have happened had the asteroid that destroyed all of dinosaur kind had only been half the side. Reilly explores all of the possibilities of evolution within what dinosaurs could have become based on their geographical locations and the knowledge of how geography actually changed. These little changes would have led to evolution and actual dying out of entire species due to lack of adaptability or actual increases in intelligence in order to survive. This book is very reminiscent of “Jurassic Park,” but more so in a way that feels more war like, instead of being a race for survival. There is a bit more than just the running and trying to survive, however, and I think that is what makes the book more than just some black and white, fear driven story, so it is definitely a good book to read.

I keep reading the books from Brent Reilly and it always amazes me his ability to start a novel that had everything to be the same as the stories he’s inspired by and turn them into his own.
This time we have a story clearly inspired by Jurassic Park, only in here raptors were not extinguished at all and have been evolving for the past 65 million years and are in a war with humans over who can rule the Earth. It’s an interesting premise to think how a smart dinosaur could have evolved and what role would it have in today’s world. It’s mainly a story of survival with some great action moments. The first chapters were a bit boring as we encountered loads of information, but that piece is important in order to not get lost in the new universe the author has created. Great piece of storytelling.

Dino Wars by Brent Reilly has such a unique premise that it is interesting for kids and adults as well. Suppose some dinosaurs survived, what would the world be like today, and what would mankind look like? This is truly about the fight for survival, not only among the dinosaurs, but for man. There is a good mix here of history, some gore, (which the kids will like), and a lot of adventure. The characters are fun to read and learn about, and you totally root for them to win. Kind of written in the same vein as Jurrassic Park, but a lot lighter on the scientific aspect, this is a fun book, where you suspend all of your current beliefs and just enjoy the ride. Vivid details really make the scenes stand out, and help to flesh out the book. Highly recommend for an interesting journey into the world of dinosaurs, great for kids with some adult supervision.

Dino Wars is reminiscent of Jurassic Park but it has a rich history as well as battle for survival with some dinosaurs that have only gained intelligence as the years have gone by. I loved the main character Kit- a mere 8-year-old boy who would be the hero of the tale. Kit's parents are tragically killed by these "smart" dinosaurs that have evolved rather than become extinct. The details of the deaths are quite gory, and there are some other scenes that are explicit as well. I do like the added touch of history- it provides a good back ground for what actually happened. Dinosaurs did not become extinct but have morphed in deadly, intelligent creatures. This is an excellent battle of survival for humans vs. these creatures and I was impressed.

A fantasy story of the battle between humans and dinosaurs

This is a well written story of a battle for survival of the human race. Raptors have grown in intelligence and can hide and fight with a viscious efficiency. The hero of the story is 8 year old Kit who sees his parents killed by raptors and takes up the journey to save the people and defeat the threat. This is a fun and creative story with good character development and an exciting storyline. Follow Kit and his journey, see if his wits and slingshot will be enough to win the battle. A fun read that will be enjoyed by all. Root for this young boy as the battle rages on.

Interesting concept - gory details

I really like the premise of this book as it is something completely different than what I’ve seen before. The author sets up a story where not all of the dinosaurs were killed when asteroids hit the Earth. The dinosaurs are way smarter than what they are given credit for and an epic battle begins.
As many of the other reviewers stated, the first few pages are super boring as the author lays everything out and the battles are written in incredibly gory details (which I am not a fan of).
But this book will entertain some people as the concept alone is unique.

Not my cup of tea, but it may be yours.

This book wasn't what I was expecting. It wasn't bad, but it certainly isn't my usual genre either. This book will appeal to sci-fi readers with a love of war tactics.
