An adorable new character is introduced, some baseball is played and our hero overextends himself preparing for his agricultural high school's fall festival. It's slow, it's gentle, but it's consistently good.

Love the new puppy. It’s so precious! I love his name, too!

The horse stuff is really cool. Reminds me of my horse phase lol. It was depicted quite well!!

Ahhh this author’s sense of humor is so fun. I always enjoy reading her stuff because it has the best combination of storytelling, comic relief, and emotions.

You know a series is doing something right when it gets me to laugh out loud like a manic hyena, and this volume did that at least twice, perhaps three times.

I have to say that I feel like volume 5 was a bit more upbeat in its chapters than volume 4, but there's still a nice balance of the more serious elements in the story with that of the humor and the fun. A lot of the focus is initially on the acquisition of the new puppy known as "Vice Prez", if you couldn't tell from the cover, but There is additionally a big build-up to a festival that I assume we'll get in volume 6, and I can't wait to see how that turns out!

Perhaps it's a fair sign of how much I love this series that I don't have much more to say that isn't mindless gushing so far; I'm genuinely so happy to have returned to it and read this volume, and I can't wait to pick up the next one!

I adore this volume! It’s mostly about horses! Such precious souls!

But other than that, this volume is about learning about your limits, insecurities, teamwork, and dealing with disappointment. Not everything in life is going to go your way. Sometimes your approach is wrong, sometimes the odds are against you, sometimes you just need to work harder, and sometimes you need to work less.

This series has 15 volumes.

Hachiken finds a dog during the school clean up and they decide to keep it to guard the stables. But Hachiken has a lot to learn about training a dog, so he does what he does best and studies. The students at Ezo Ag are gearing up for the big festival they put on, and Hachiken's great ability to be responsible and unable to say no may mean he's overcommitted himself...just a bit. He's also trying to learn how to jump in equestrian club but can't seem to make his horse cooperate.

That summary just dusts the main topics. As is typical at a high school, there's a lot of side stuff going on with various characters from baseball to topics covered in classes to interpersonal stuff. This continues to be a very enjoyable series with a few laugh out loud moments. Hachiken really needs to learn to say no, and hopefully he now realizes that. I love how the illustrator does stuff to Hachiken's face and body to communicate his emotions. It is hilarious. Recommended for those who enjoy contemporary high school stories and farm life stories.

Notes on content: 3-4 minor swear words. Someone accuses a guy and girl of having a sexual relationship but he's totally jumping to conclusions and they shut him down quickly. There's a rectal exam of a cow but it is tactfully/scientifically talked about. One person gets stepped on by an animal, a fall from a horse, and a slip and fall all occur, none result in serious injury.

It’s campus cleanup time again, and Hachiken can’t help but make another discovery to occupy his time (and resources). Fortunately, Tokiwa (of all people) has a solution for one of the recurring costs. After a middle school career dedicated to studying only—with no extracurriculars, Hachiken has found himself wearing a great many hats in high school. Will the school’s upcoming festival spell the end of the “guy who can’t say no?” While this is not a sports manga, Arakawa sensei and her assistants prove up to the task of depicting the power and tension in baseball and the grace and athleticism of equestrian competitions. There really doesn’t seem to be anything she can’t draw, and draw beautifully!

It’s campus cleanup time again and Hachiken finds a puppy in the trash heap! After cleaning him off, the pup becomes the unofficial mascot and guide dog for the equation club, “Vice Prez.” Later, the students go see the baseball team compete and cheer on Komaba’s pitching. Then, it’s time to plan for the Ag Festival, and the equestrian team wants to do something to showcase how cool horses are. Hachiken can’t get his horse, Chestnut, to jump, even though other riders can. He must learn a valuable lesson about himself as a rider. While he trying to get the equestrian event up and running, he overcommits to other groups’ festival offerings. The man who won’t say no must learn, or he’ll never get in the practice with Chestnut that he needs to become a great jumper!

This volume has some valuable lessons about over committing oneself. It’s easy to do when you want to help everyone, or if you feel passionate about all of the undertakings, but there aren’t enough hours in the day sometimes! Hachiken is learning a lot about agriculture, but he's learning even more about himself.

Sara's Rating: 9/10
Suitability Level: Grades 7-12

I LOVE Silver Spoon! It's just such a feel good manga and really wholesome.

In this volume, Hachiken finds a stray dog while doing a campus clean-up and decides that they need to keep him. Hachiken has such a tender heart and it's a joy to see how he always ends up in these messes!

Meanwhile, the Equestrian club needs to find a way to wow everyone at the local festival and get more club members.

More fun reading with this Hokkaido ag school series’s mix of quirky coming of age drama, cozy rural life, and a surprisingly detailed depiction of the nuances of the agricultural careers/lifestyles being prepared for.

Notable events this time include the new arrival of a puppy and getting him settled on campus, more baseball games, Hachiken’s continued uncertainty about the romantic status of his crush, his insecurity over struggling to jump his strong-willed horse Dot Brows, and comically overcommitting/overexerting himself in preparation for the upcoming school festival.

Many marvelous things in this one! I love Vice President, and that when his friends are troubled Hachiken has to figure out how to be available to help without taking it on himself to Fix Everything, and the way everyone at the school works so hard, and the new batch of pigs and how everyone is thinking and talking about the ethics around it even when before they took it for granted, and the horses, and family responsibilities vs. individual passions... I am glad there is lots more to come!

"Even when you start something on a whim, the more you keep at it, the more ambitious you become." Unfortunately, Hachiken has become a little too interested in horseback riding in this installment for my taste, but it looks like he's going to get back into managing the brick oven by the next book. Hopefully we get to see more of the puppy and the romance as the story continues as well.

Sometimes saying no is ok, sometimes saying i need help is ok too.

This was a good volume. I binge read the series however so I am not sure which events were specifically tied to this volume. See first few volumes and volume 7 for my general feelings on the series so far.

The Academy gets a dog, prepares for a festival, and Hachiken makes his first jump atop a horse.

This series is adorable - all the characters are likeable while not perfect. I enjoy seeing Hachiken try new things and grow as a person.

The really great thing about this manga is that it takes its sweet time to get through things. That might sound negative, but in reality, it's nice to get to enjoy the sights. It's the difference between a plane and a bus. The plane gets you there faster, but the bus lets you enjoy the ride.

There's a cute puppy, and that's exactly what I needed to see. I could also relate to wanting to do so many activities you tire yourself out. But that's why I like reading about Hachiken -- he means well and tries so hard. I'm glad he has so many friends around to help out and root for.

This is a more fun volume than it is dramatic. We see slow development in characters and a few entertaining moments but it feels like its building up to something more. Given the creator's other works, we know there will be a delivery on all the elements being laid out before us.
