On Christmas Eve in 1818, the organ in St. Nicholas Church would not play, so the organist, Franz Gruber set to music a poem written by a young priest Josef Mohr and the choir first performed Silent Night at Midnight mass accompanied only on a guitar. Told through an historical perspective, the reader learns about the famine, the poverty, the war.
The illustrations are so nostalgic - it feels like a Christmas book from my childhood. Originally published in Switzerland, it's a timeless story. Although it takes place at a church and was written by a priest, remarkably the story isn't religious - it's about a carol. Includes biographical information.
Gorgeous and fascinating! I enjoyed reading about the history of "Silent Night." The beautiful illustrations and story captivated my imagination about what it might have looked like when this song was created so long ago. Lovely!
