I found this a good book. Estella is a strong heroine and also a captain of a ship of men. Her lost love somehow ends up in her ship and they reconnect over the voyage.

An entertaining story. I've just read two Dawn Brower short stories in a row, and I must say there were similarities between the two. Both enjoyable though. 4☆

Where's the Romance?

I think that short-form fiction is hard to write well. Novellas seem to suffer from one of two maladies: either they have too much story to shoehorn into the limited word real estate or the authors info-dump to bring you up to speed quickly before getting to the actual story. Unfortunately, this book suffered from the first fault. The prologue is entirely believable for a Regency story, though you might feel a bit angry toward the heroine for her choices. The bulk of the book takes place three years later, and my head was spinning trying to figure out what the heck was going on. Let's just say that much transpired in those three years that was completely illogical, and the author didn't explain it well (and even then, only in snippets of explanation here and there, not enough to make coherent sense of the story). I just found it hard to believe that a young Regency woman who was so intimidated by her guardian as to reject her true love forcibly and cruelly would then go on to somehow gather the funds to buy a ship and become the captain of a pirate ship. Even writing that sentence … makes the whole story seem so implausible, and it is! Even if I didn't have the confusion about how all that transpired, the story the author chose to tell doesn't work as a romance, at least for me. We never got to see them initially fall for each other; we didn't get to see their attraction and building romance. We weren't told much about it, let alone shown any of it. That happened even before the prologue. What's left in the bulk of the story is tantamount to a lot of bickering about the past … before they make the seemingly out-of-nowhere decision to go ahead with a future together despite that past. The bickering became quite tedious because, as a reader, I cared little about them or their romance since the author didn’t share enough about them to help me do so. This book was more confusing and annoying than enjoyable. And the narrator didn't help! I listen to a fair amount of Regency romance, and I'm shocked at the number of narrators who do not know how to pronounce the very Regency word “ton.” It actually comes from the French “le Bon Ton” and would be best pronounced with a light French accent. That rarely happens, of course. But the narrator should at least not pronounce it like a weight measure. Every time this narrator said “ton” (which was often), she pronounced it like “tuhn” the weight, not “tahn” which is at least closer to the French, even if not perfectly so.

I received a promo code for this audiobook, but that did not affect my review.

Years ago women did not always get to pick who they married for Estella this is true, her stepfather wants her to marry an old man, she doesn’t, he does nothing for her and even scares her. She has picked the man she wants, he adores her but this is not to be. If she doesn’t marry the man her stepfather picks then she will be exiled and left with no money. She has little choice her dye has been cased, but she won’t take this lying down. She must give up the man she loves, breaking his heart making him a totally different man. They both move on in different direction heartbroken one and the other not giving in to the demands, she will turn her life around and won’t let her stepfather get the upper hand. He feels sure once he sends her away it will not be long before she gives in to his demands. This is a story of love that will outlive time and how these two find their way back to each other the hard way.

The narrator does a wonderful job on narration making you feel the emotion that each character goes through. Her character voices are great, you always know who is talking and what they are feeling. There are no repeating of words, no volume changes. She delivers a delight performance that pulls you in taking you back in time to a time when life wasn’t so easy and women didn’t have choices. I really didn’t want the story to end and had trouble putting it down.

The author has a way with words, writing in a way that pulls the reader in making you apart of the story. The plot was great, her characters strong but with weakness. It was a joy to watch them overcome their issues and coming together, showing that love can last a lifetime no matter what life throws at you. I can’t wait for the next one in this series.

I received a free copy of this audiobook for an honest review.

Love Dawn Brower; she is a great, entertaining writer. The majority of her stories are historical romance, and that's one of my favorite genres.

My only question is in relation to how Estella was able to accomplish as much as she had. Given the time period and the fact that she was female, how did she manage to get a ship (yes, she found the money to afford one), but with the crew? It was uncommon having a female in a power position (unless she had a fortune and was a widow), much less a female captain. That part was kind of unbelievable. But either way, this was a good story!

As for the narrator, she had an interesting voice. There wasn't that much variety between the character voices, and I wish the pauses between sentences/paragraphs were a little longer than what they were. It's like she'd go from one sentence directly to the next with a very short pause (shorter than normal, in my opinion).

You meet Warwick in book 1 of the series and at the end, Garrick was concern about his friend. Donovan was seriously hurt by Estella. Estella had to hurt him because of her stepfather, but it tears at her heart. This event has colored Donovan life and drink has been his medicine. The author did a great job of showing the reader that fate will not be denied. That love wins out. Love the part when Donovan is tied to a bed and he did not seem that the reason was believed and he was a bit amused. You can just see it in your mind this is another engaging and wonderful book by Dawn Brower. There is so much in the book that I could write a book about it, but I think you will enjoy it more if left in the dark. I did receive a free copy of this book and voluntarily chose to review it.

I loved this regency era romance, especially because of the strong heroine. She is no damsel in distress, and when her stepfather leaves her with no means of support, she takes control of her own life as a ...smuggler. Definitely not an approved occupation for a lady! She meets up with the man whose heart she once broke when he ends up drunk on her ship. The fire is still there, but they need to learn to trust each other if they are to find lasting love. This is an entertaining story with action, danger, love, delightful hero and heroine, and a wicked stepfather.

3.5 stars. It's a cute story and a short read. I would have loved to give it four stars. Unfortunately, there were things I just couldn't overlook. A female captain? I don't believe it. Sailors were always superstitious and believed that females on board brought bad luck. And talking about the ship. First we learn that she won it in a card game. Later she says she bought it. Also, she puts on a dress once they reach her cabin. Right after they decide to go to London she says she needs to put on a dress. I know most readers won't mind little discrepancies and therefore will love this book. It just wasn't right for me.

An entertaining read, Estella, inspite of being forced to separate from her beloved suitor, was determined to find him when she came into her inheritance. She found an unusual way to survive. Donovan, Viscount Warwick had always led a charmed life and was a popular man with the ladies, however when the love of his life, left he was desolate. I did enjoy this story but wished it could have been longer, as it seemed a little rushed at the end. I received a copy via Booksprout and have voluntarily reviewed it. Lady Estella Simms has been forced to leave home by her step father so she turns to snuggling in order to survive. Donovan Turned Viscount of Warwick had his heart broken by Lady Estella three years ago and he has turned to brandy to drown his sorrow. One night on a drunken binge he finds himself on a ship owned by none other Lady Estella. Where will this all lead for Donovan and Estella?

This is romantic, entertaining and amusing. Donovan is determined and sweet. Estella is strong, stubborn and brave. They fell in love then were separated by her stepfather. 3 years later they themselves together again. Donovan is very forgiving, but it's not exactly smooth sailing. Both characters are likable and sweet, and the storyline is entertaining.

Her evil stepfather forces her to leave home. Nothing to call hers she has no choice but to adopt a trade that helps her survive. Smuggling. She broke his heart and he turned to drinking to take his pain away. He gets drunk again and ends up with her in a very unusual position. Now trouble comes knocking and with that they must mend the hurt. It is exciting, fun, hot, emotional, surprising and so much more. I was given a review copy by booksprout and voluntarily review it.

This is the 3rd book I’ve read written by Dawn Brower; she has done a great job at writing a good book. I can’t wait to read more of her books.

The story line caught my attention at the very beginning and kept me interested throughout the entire book.

I loved the chemistry between Estella & Donovan.

This is an entertaining and enjoyable quick read. A fun , if somewhat unrealistic plot keeps your attention well. I liked the chemistry that Donovan and Estella shared. With their painful shared past hanging between them and more drama on the horizon, this couple has quite a away to go before they can get that HEA. This is the second story in the "Ever Beloved" series. It's a stand alone story but has some connected characters. Donovan is in the first story and you can tell he is struggling with something in the first story. In this story you find out what has him suffering. I loved Donovan and Estella's story! It's a heart warming story with an evil stepdad. I enjoyed the story-line and characters.

this is the second book in this series and is a fantastic read by one of my favorite Regency authors. She is forced to leave by her stepfather and Donovon ends up on the same boat. Heartwarmingly Romantic!
Dawn Brower always delivers a warm, interesting, entertaining and easy to read story and that is why I love her books so much.
I listened to Eleanor Katz reading it in an audiobook and she did so very well, adding a little 'something' to make it extra special.
I listened to a copy of the audiobook and my review above is given voluntarily and is unbiased.
