Marriages may be made in heaven but they are certainly enjoyed and endured here. They are an amalgamation of culture, customs, cuisines and people. In India, where these aspects change every 100 kms, the equation of marriage becomes complex. A girl conditioned to a certain culture is put in a completely new culture after marriage. I was no different. I, a Maharashtrian, chose to marry a Bengali from only a few 1000 kms away from where I had lived so far. What ensued was a roller coaster ride of interesting incidents and amusing moments. Cross-connection is an auto-biographical account of these anecdotes that happened in this Marathi-Bengali marriage.
Cross Connection is inspired by the life of the author. The marriage in India is a big festivity. It is not a union between two people but the two families. Cross Connection is the story of a two clan, religion, and culture comes under one roof when two people fell in love with each other and take a step forward, marriage.
It is a memoir of personal experience of author’s life, includes marriage, parenting and more. The story is written in a light mood with sweet and spicy encounters of her life. The story has a lot of scope in terms of narration. It is filled with quirky humor and challenges she faced in coming to terms with her new life in completely different culture. Deepali has been writing and contributing to publications and that reflects in her writing this book.
It is a light-hearted and quick read. An enjoyable, interesting and nicely written story of two cultures of rosogolla and puran poli.
Taking a light hearted view of an inter-caste marriage in India is a rather bold feat. And that's where Deepali Joshi Adhikary lets out the secret ...don't take yourself too seriously ! This account of her married life (or any interest caste married life ) is light and fluffy like a well made omelette and leaves you feeling very satisfied like warm daal- chawal with ghee. The situations here would be familiar to the married and single alike and will leave a genuine smile on your face. I have only one grouse ...it's too short and leaves you wanting more. Confident, non judgmental and very matter-of-fact... Deepali Joshi Adhikary is definitely a promising upcoming author and I am going to watch out for the next one!
This book beautifully depicts the life of a Marathi girl (author) who is married into a Bengali family. She falls in love with a person who is the exact opposite of her 'dream boy' image and belongs to a culture that is an alien concept for her. The author has covered every aspect of this marriage, the positives and the negatives; conflicts over food choices, language issues, day to day compatibility, and the love that remains the same after all those differences.
The book is written in a positive light. It is not one of those documentaries where the differences are ridiculed to create a humour element, or where problems are given all the attention to create a story that can be gossiped around.
She has emphasized on how both the parties have tried to adjust with each other. Little compromises and a lot of acceptance, it is beautiful how things can turn out to be when two families belonging to different cultures decide to adopt each other's practices to create a beautiful fusion.
A chapter is dedicated to her son where she explains how he has decided to put this classical mix to his favour as and when required. The author has used real life incidents to make her point, and these incidents are nothing less than sweet comic stories that will remind you of your own similar experiences.
I enjoyed reading this one, it left me smiling like a fool. A perfect feel good book is what it is. If you want a short read that will lighten up your heart, this is the one you are looking for.
Mix two cultures, languages, way of living and top that with two main people along with the related people and their extended families and what do you get? A melting pot of bubbling hot Bollywood material story that can’t keep you off from laughing.
And from this cauldron you can either escape or are confounded with the identity notions for life.
Cross Connection: Of Culture, Clan & Cuisine by Deepali Joshi Adhikary is a well packed, delectable story about a home that’s rebuilt with the coming in of daughter-in-law and how the differences in culture make up for an interesting memoir. A Maharashtrian bride enters the Bengali household but wait… right from the time the marriage preparations start, the glaring differences crop up in the minutest of the decisions. How do they cope with this as two families? And then later on how does the bride bridge the gap? Read the ebook to reveal into the experiences of conflicting frames of living.
My favourite incident in the book is the one involving the fish. Yeah it’s a fishy tale and it goes like this…..
“According to the Bengali tradition, a fish is sacred. During weddings, an exchange of fish between the groom and the bride’s family is considered auspicious. But what do you do when the bride’s family likes fish only in fish tanks and not on their plates? “ The verdict? Go for it! It is a fast paced read and quite enjoyable! While you tuck in the imagery of poshto and poran puri in your mind, this one is quite a delightful read.
The only hitch is... wanted it to be longer... maybe a sequel on the way?
Cross Connection is inspired by the real life of the author, where a Maharashtrian bride enters a Bengali household. The premise itself is interesting and the author has penned it down with a light-hearted note. It is a short read where a reader gets to know how a girl falls in love with a boy that is exactly opposite to what she would have desired in her dreams. The differences in the culture continue to make way in their day to day lives after marriage, but at the end of the day, the author focusses on the fact that a few adjustments from both the end is the key to a happy future.
