When your over twenty books into a series it’s hard to just give it up, so you keep reading the books in the hope that they might improve.
The problem is over the last few years the author has spent most of his energies creating the ‘Kurtherian Gambit Universe’ and the original series of books has suffered. I am out of step with his many avid readers, but the quality of the books has definitely declined over the course of the series.
This book has a few little incidents that remind me of the earlier books, but the basic story is quite tedious.

Didn't work for me.

When you find an author that impresses you, it's common to seek out other stories that have been written. Occasionally that is a path to disappointment. I long ago made the mistake of reading Steven King's collection of short stories "Skeleton Crew" where his formulaic style was made manifest(he later shook up the algorithm a bit, and I limited the number of books I bought from him.) There have been other similar experiences, sometimes based on my tastes ("Black Ocean" I dislike, "Twinborn Chronicles" I love. ) and sometimes based on the growth and development of the author. This story just left me flat. I neither like or care about the characters. The amount of exposition that starts the story is painful. I rarely ever end up liking any story where the author of publisher feels the need to introduce the characters with their biographical information, species, and countries or planets, prior to telling the story. I want the storyteller to introduce the characters and their environments in an organic and natural progression, what we call world building.

Enough of what I do not like. On the positive side of the equation: the copy editing is nearly flawless, there is a good effort at character development even if I did not like the characters, there are brilliant quotes and sparkling passages that remain memorable. This first book is currently offered for free, the following books in the series are generously offered up on Amazon Prime to read for free. I loved the "witch of the federation" books and highly recommend them. My tastes are not everyone's tastes. These books are a little bit more adult language than the witch series but not grossly offensive.

Payback is a Bitch - a review by Rosemary Kenny

Bethany Anne Reynolds has a lot going on in her 190 year old life. As well as being pregnant by her vampire fiance, Michael Nacht, she's also got an alter-ego, the deadly Baba Yaga to dole out punishment to the guilty and to support the Queen Bitch against the many enemies of Earth and the new regime she is rolling out from her High Tortuga stronghold where she can commune with the Etheric needs help from Michael's brother, Stephen and his daughter Gabrielle who leads Bethany Anne's Queen's Bitches personal guard.

Where does the initial threat come from? Who are her new enemies? Does anyone know Bethany Anne and Baba Yaga are the reverse sides of the same person? Who is TOM? How does he support Bethany Anne?
Who is Addix? What role does this person play in Bethany Anne's life? How does Jacqueline transform?
Why are the Shrillexians attacking Bethany Anne's ship? What are Bethany Anne's twins called?

The action never dwindles in this epic space adventure, as thrilling battles, an epic love story, personality clashes, AI and EI beings control and support the eternal couple and their new family in this exciting new novel from the pen of Michael Anderle, that's not to be missed!

The second series featuring Bethany Anne. The only thing stopping this from 5 stars is too much logistics getting High Tortuga self sufficient.
BA and Michael are reunited in space and working on her planet High Tortuga. Some offworlder is trying to mess with it, not knowing who is in charge. Meanwhile BA is close to term in her pregnancy.
Another fun novel made better by having an enjoyable cast

Great opening for Arc 2

I'm excited to have reached this part of the series. I can't wait to see what unfolds in this Arc. Michael Anderle keeps coming with awesome stuff. I can't help but to keep reading more.

Fun and highly enjoyable read.

There are so many characters with quirks and endearing personality traits that it is hard to claim one as favorite. I'll just have to keep reading Michael Anderle's work until I can decide, I guess...

I don't think I've ever written a review that's gone past a few words or a sentence, but after finishing the book and reading the Author and Editor notes at the end, I had to, so on that note please forgive the horrid grammar going forward.

"Payback Is A Bitch", for me at least, didn't grab me by the nape of my neck and force me to stay up way to late a night or two reading cause i couldn't put it down. Instead It kept giving me puzzles to solve (even if partially) and possibilities to go over in my head that stayed with me throughout the day (and yes, kept me up at night as brains do when you're trying to sleep).
The long of it (for all that it's not that long of a paragraph)... During a horrid few days that wouldn't end that took up most of my time and thoughts this book gave me a smile when I needed it and an out both in the moment of reading and during times I would've been grumping over the days events (i.e. while laying down to sleep and in the rare moments I wasn't running around). Would/will I suggest you read this book, hell yes! Will I be buying the First Arc now (or in the morning since I need to goto bed already), DUH! Did I just look and see that the rest of the Endgame Arc is out and will be reading that before the first arc....yes.

The short and sweet... Do you like Sci-Fi, Read the book. Do you like being made to think, Read the book. Do you like good books, Read the book. Basically, Read the book.

My thanks to the Author, Editor, and team.
~DG~

(a quick after thought I'm adding on after posting this, this is the first night I could stay up late and I spent the entire time finishing this book and writing this, and totally not showing my love or new addiction for this book/series/writer. Had I read this during a normal week in my life I can confidently say I would've been up till 2am to finish or get as far as I could.)
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

5 K’rilleck Tasted Good If You Steamed Them Stars

Payback Is A Bitch is the first book in The Kurtherian Endgame series by Michael Anderle.

What a fantastic start to the new/continuation series for Bethany Anne and Michael’s reunion and mission to track down the remaining Kurtherians aligned with the Seven ideology.

We were given some pretty interesting insights into the world they are building on Devon. How they plan to shape it and build it up. And then the potential to transition, what they hope will work, to Earth in the future. Once their Kurtherian hunt is concluded of course. Then there’s the mysteries ADAM and TOM set up at the end of last book. We finally discover TOM’s secret: In his language Pilot and Priest are similar. They guide. His has made it his mission to guide Bethany Anne, hold her back from ‘Ascension’, as she has unknowingly done for him. And expressed how utterly painful and difficult the task will be for the both of them.

Michael still isn’t shining to his true potential, yet again in these pages. The little bits dedicated to his fascination in hunting down a dinosaur type creature, and barbecuing it, were hilarious and entertaining.

There is still ADAM’s mystery left in the air. That’s he’s gaining power, and therefore has some new abilities he’s hiding from his host. And that Uleq, one of the three behind the failed takeover of Devon is still lose and on the run. Not the least of obstacles in their path to finding him: that they believe it was Imon who died instead. He appears to be more of mastermind than to be expected. So I’m going to assume he’ll be a GIANT roadblock in the success of the retired Empress’ current efforts. We shall see.

Great as always

The mainline stories from Death Becomes Her on are all great reads with the biggest weakness being the forced 'creative cursing' which is virtually all pure pottymouth or low grade elementary school stuff.
The side stories to the BA mains are great to good.
The space stories are okay to great
The post-BA Earth stories are okay except for the Dark Messiah arc which actually fall under the main stories. The biggest problem here comes from after all the buildup and hype over the WWDE, it appears to become a crutch with a WWDE 2.0, WWDE 3.0, etc. to lead off the next big series that repeat the main story with its own mini-BA....but unlike the real deal fails miserably to make any lasting change.
The biggest weakness in the entire shared universe is anything by Craig Martelle, the author of the Nomad and now Bad Company series. The Nomad character in any other author's work is a strong likable character, but in Martelle's he is an abused spouse and shows the psychological stigmas of one the longer he is with Char, who is a bad and incompetent parody of BA, instead of the pale imitations found in the other side series. She is arrogant, virtually always wrong in her public humiliations of Nomad and acts like an abusive spouse. I don't know what Martelle does for Michael Anderle, but it sucks badly that the entire Bad Company series with some my favorite mainline characters with the series I most anticipated got trashed by handing to Martelle's mishandling.

It was wonderful to be back with Bethany Anne, and Michael, plus all of the gang.

This book had so much going on, and it was wonderful to see how they were preparing High Tortuga to be a brilliant planet for humanity - or those following BA and Michael, anyway - to live on!

Reading about all my favourite characters really made me want to have more, and so I'm really glad that Michael Anderle continued on with them.

This book is number 22 of the original Bethany Anne books, in the Kurtherian Gambit arc, but it's also number 1 of the Kurtherian Endgame arc, too, so it shows just how popular a character she is.

I'm so totally the opposite of Bethany Anne, but would love to be like her, so I guess there must be many thousands more people just like me, who read her books, and put ourselves - imagined to be just like her - in her place!

I'm just really glad that I've loved the other new series that have started in this arc of Expansion, or I'd be sitting here, totally sad at having to leave Bethany Anne, with her darling new twin babies, and her rather dishy hubby!

So, for the next book on my reading list, it's back to book three of the Ascension Myths: Called!

Oops!

I thought I was reading the first book in the life of a new author, ha! But I guess 22nd isn't that bad.
This Michael Anderle guy is good, and I say this from the perspective of time. I now live just up the road from where Bob Heinlein was born and I've read everything he put out faster than he wrote it. And Dr. Asimov, and Andre Norton (such a sweet lady), and John D. McDonald.
Based on this book, which made reference to actions and adventures in his universe I haven't experienced, Mr. Anderle has that muscle.
Oops, again. The review.
Expect to visit more aliens then you've experienced outside of the Skywalker universe. Vampires in "science fiction"? And weres, and AI's, and EI's and ....
This is a great read. Do yourself a favor - 'cause I ain't giving nothing away.
For me, it will be back to the beginning of this trip, 22 books before.

What A Trip!!

From a pregnant Bethany Ann to building a new world on the planet formally known as Devon, the New adventures of Bethany Ann with the resently returned Michael is a non stop exciting journey. With most of the old friends from the previous Bethany Ann series are just as fun and exciting to read about as ever. The dialog had me laughing out loud and the action kept me glued to my seat. Looking forward to the next addition to this series. Highly recommend reading the first series, the Kurtherian Gambit, first for maximum enjoyment. But if you want to start with this one or it's been awhile since reading the first KG series, there are plenty of hints that manage not to pull the story down. And as always, the author's notes are the icing on the cake!

I love this book. I wonder what is going to happen next. I think that if this had previously happened. People would have been like The Queen Bitch and The Archangel are having kids... (O.O) they are reproducing.... Some where in some forgotten base there would be a red strobe light going off with sirens saying "RED ALERT, RED ALERT. EVACUATION COMMENCING. THE SPAWN HAVE BEEN CONCIEVED! GET THE HELL OFF PLANET! THE MONSTER DUO HAVE SPAWNED EVACUATE IMMEDIATELY!" Sadly the people on Devon didn't quite get the message.. Especially one particular guy who they hunted down.. Poor poor poor dumb bastard.

I wonder if the series talking about an Ava is her daughter.. If so, can't wait to read it ^_^

interesting start to another Bethany Anne story arc

Part of the appeal of Anderle's work is his epilogue's, let's get that said right at the start. He and the author's he works with are passionate about their craft, and it shows both in their writing and their own author's notes. I applaud Michael for his prolific writing, of interesting stories and fascinating characters, but also for finding a passion which has obviously struck a chord with readers and other authors. Way to go LMBPN!!!!!
Kids for Michael and Bethany Anne! Protective parents. Interactions with AI's, EI's, politically incorrect statements and "how to deal with them." This series promises to be interesting.

This is not cool. Not Cool! Mr. Michael, how can you act like this is the beginning of a new series. Obviously it is not. And the beginning was just a information dump. I felt like, what is going on when I was half way into the book. I could see how If I knew the characters the book would have been better. But geez dude. Too much, too, much for a first book. I felt like I missed the first month in taking chemistry for the first time. You never will get it all but if you're smart you will get the gist and probably pass. And that is how I felt reading this book. I eventually understood what was going on. But I still don't understand it all. And I don't feel like I will unless I read the other series. This book made me angry.

Wonderful reunion!

I loved Michael's trek across the world, taking care of business and searching for a way to Bethany Anne. Lots of adventures, but my goal was to get them reunited. Finally. When I started this series I knew I was rereading the first four books of TKG. I got hung up waiting for the next book, thinking a year from that time. Now I have read the 21, the rise of magic, the academy, Frank's stories, Valerie's adventures,
And heaven knows all the branches I am just discovering.
Break time then onward with Endgame2 plus book 2 of Valerie.....plus the next Valerie's Elite collection. I stopped to await one book and it seems the books bred like were-bunnies. 😂

Thank you!

I just am not ready to say goodbye to all these people! Thank you for continuing BA and Michael’s story.
The twins were certainly a big surprise. I totally enjoyed the labor room scene. Lol. And after Bethany Anne had that dream and decided to go after Michael I thought she would leave the babes there. I was glad though when she decided they would go with their mama. I imagine they will grow up to kick ass and take names just like their parents.
I loved the small piece of information that Tom dropped on her at the end of the book. And now I can’t wait to see what Adam’s bombshell is going to be!
As I said earlier, I know I am late coming to this party…and I am so glad I found it!

Loved it!

I have such a love/hate relationship with this series. I spend all this time waiting impatiently for the next adventure and then, here it is! So, do I pace myself, savouring each word and making the book last, at least a few days? No, I do not. My book downloaded at 9:02 pm and here it is, 1:55 am and I want the next book NOW. Every week I seem to start at the beginning of the series, rereading all 21, now 22 of them. Sorry, but you seem to have created a monster here, so please get the next one out soon. This series is going to be even better than the first because Bethany Anne and Michael are together again.

Let me first say that I love this series and anxiously await each new installment. That said, this is the first book in the series that I found disappointing, partially because I was expecting so much more in terms of stories around Michael getting adjusted to space, etc. and integrating into the greater group dynamics and partially because I got tired of the lengthy dialogue on how a government and society should function. Felt too much like a soapbox to me and kind of reminded me of one of those examples you see in a textbook where the answer is always a whole number, despite that rarely being the case in real life.

Great read that once you start you will not want to put it down

THE KURTHERIAN ENDGAME™ BOOK 1 by MICHAEL ANDERLE is one awesome book. It has it all adventure, escapism, fun, mystery, action, vampires,  werewolves, werebear and beautiful women (opps im sorry Bethany Anne I forgot. It won’t happen again.) Spaceships, great weapons and awesome fight scenes.
It even has TOM and Adam. I can’t tell you about them because BA would really get me. (100 pushups with her standing on my back in high heels is not my idea of a pleasant workout.)A
Each book can stand alone but is best read in order to really enjoy them.

Everyone Loves BA and Michael

Of course it's a solid 5 star rating!
This was an awesome addition to The Kurtherian series. It's book 1 of the KE series and a great start. Anyone who's been following the KG series will love this addition and there's more of all the characters you love with new additions. The action is still there, the humor, and the love. Yes I said love. There's more romantic moments in this book than I remember from the KG series but I'm not complaining.
AND the convention in November??? Heck Yeah!
Can't wait till the next installment to this.

I have never read a Bethany Anne book I didn't like!

I loved reading about Bethany Anne and Michael together again. The only reasons I gave 4 instead of 5 stars were two things: One, I feel a little cheated that there wasn't more description of what happens after they get to the delivery room. You set up a great scenario (I don't want to spoil things for anyone) that you didn't capitalize on. Two, I felt a little overloaded with all the detailed world planning. Otherwise it was great as usual!

I first started The Kurtherian series a little over two years ago. When all the little different spin offs started I started reading them as well. It became too many for me to keep up with and didn't really allow me time to read much of anything else so I stopped on the entire series. This is the first one in the series I've read in a very long time and I intend to read the rest in this series but I'll stay away from the spin offs.

I do really like this series though and it was good to get back in touch with Bethany Anne!

The more times you read these stories the more they grow on you.

I did it again, I didn't leave a review on this book any of the previous reads (3,4,5?).
I can only offer in my defense that by the time this one came out the author was involved in so many other enthralling tales that I just had to go straight to the next one, TKG related or not.
Also these books absolutely demand you read them in a close to possible in one sitting it's usually the wee hours of the morning when I finish so there's no ergs left to do anything else but sleep.

Like a reunion with old friends.

I’ve been eagerly anticipating this book, it was worth the wait, it was like visiting with old friends, miss the series. Need more books would be a and crew excellent. I’m glad the author is pursuing more of Bethany Ann’s abilities with her powers, she should be able to do all the things Michael can do because she has been super enhanced even beyond what Michael is. Keep the books coming can’t wait for the rest of the adventure.

A Pregnant Queen Bitch Rules With Emotion

Bethany Anne is pregnant with Michael's child. He soon learns that living with her and comforting her produces collateral damage to him. Fortunately he heals quickly. As usual, I like the action, wisecracking humor, and love in the book. The moral of the story is don't endanger the offspring of the two most powerful Vampires in the Universe. It is hazard to your health. I look forward to the next book.

Page turning new Arc

With peace a small step away i was quite surprised how much I enjoyed this story as setting up a new world and settling down is as expected with BA and Michael a lot harder than it is for most. Helping merge previous ARCs and characters was always going to be a challenge but keeping some light interactions and an interesting new problem made this a worthy page turner and yet another series that i shall follow with avid interest.
