MiNRS #3

MiNRS 3

Rate this book
The action-packed conclusion to the MiNRS space adventure series, which School Library Journal praised for keeping readers “on the edge of their seats.”

We do what we do best. Run. Hide. Survive.

The children of Perses must return to Earth. They defeated Major Kirk Thatcher on their adopted planet, but his evil plans are still unfolding. People need to know the truth.

Christopher has a video of Thatcher killing an injured grinder in cold blood. If they can show that to the people of Earth, they might just turn the tide. The MiNRs need to bear witness.

A transport ship might get them back home, or it might send them spinning off into the deepest recesses of space. Is it worth the risk?

Cracks begin to appear in the group. Darcy refuses to leave Perses, the only home she’s ever known. And Pavel’s mistrust of the grinders threatens to destroy them all.

Once again, Christopher has to make tough choices, choices that will cost them dearly. And even when things seem to be going well, there are hidden dangers. A strange noise on their transport ship signals the return of their worst nightmare. And the Earth they left years before is not the Earth they will return to now.

Can Christopher and his friends win the race to reveal the truth? Or will they escape one dangerous planet for one far worse?

I was thrilled to finally receive my copy of MINRS3 from my order. And because life got busy, I started reading it when I went to bed. Not a good thing to do when the story is so action packed and you wanted to find out if they got out of that predicament! Yes, there is violence and death. Not always something you want younger readers to experience, but I liked that everything wasn't always fluffy with unrealistic magical escapes. The evil character Thatcher embodies all that is rotten in a person who is in power and who can manipulate the governing systems to gain more personal power. I truly hated him! The young people in this book lost so much from their lives (family, friends, home) but held onto what was left of their dignity and didn't sink as low as Thatcher. Fantastic final book in this series. Highly recommend it (the entire series). And don't forget to read the Acknowledgments. Teachers; (Grade 7 +) the book(s) and the final Acknowledgement, could be a great opening to a fantastic discussion in your classroom.

Imagine trying to survive your whole life when your parents have died. Then imagine that you did all of that on a far away planet with enemies wanting you dead. Now you must leave this planet and go back to Earth, where doom awaits. What will you do? MiNRS3 by Kevin Sylvester is a book about 6 children who must fly back to Earth with barely any supplies and try to convince the whole Earth that they are not enemies but how will they do it if the real enemies have already convinced Earth that they are good? This book talks about how the kids manage to find places to hide, get food and water and survive. I really liked this book. It has lots of action and adventure. I would rate this book 4.5 stars out of 5 and I would recommend this book to anyone who likes action and adventure.

I have been eagerly anticipating the conclusion of Kevin Sylvester’s amazing series MINRS, the story set in a dystopian future where humans have run out of natural resources on Earth and begin “The Great Mission” to mine for resources on other planets, in this case the planet Perses. In the first two installments of the series, we follow Chris and Elena and a group of children who were living on Perses with their families who were all part of the mining colony. When the planet is attacked, all the adults perish, leaving only the children to fight the attackers, making some horrible discoveries along the way. In this last installment, Chris, Elena and the remaining MINRS are on their way back to Earth to finish what they started on Perses, to reveal the truth and bring an end to the fighting and the persecution of others.

Given the current political climate in the United States, I really felt like MINRS3 was the book to share today. Kevin Sylvester has masterfully brought the MiNRS fight to a close. There was no sugar coating in the conclusion and right up until the end you are left on the edge of your seat, not knowing the fate of the MINRS and the grinders. This story is one with child soldiers at its centre. In any war, people die but it’s so much more tragic when those people are children, forced into a fight. The MINRS are heroic, never backing down, even when the fight seems hopeless. It’s a tragically inspiring story for all of the young people out their who are finding their voices and who want to fight for change and fight for love. It’s a story that will inspire them to keep up the fight even if the bad guys win because when you fight for love then, as so eloquently put by the author, “Love might lose, but it still makes the world a better place.” Kevin Sylvester dedicated this book to “The types of people who read the acknowledgments” I felt like he was speaking right to me as the acknowledgements at the end of the book are my favourite thing to read. I love finding out what went into the making of a book and the people who helped bring it into the world. Do yourself a favour and read the acknowledgments at the end of this book. In fact, if you do nothing else, pick up this book and read what he has to say. In our current political climate, it will certainly speak to you and your children.

Did Not Finish Almost Half of the Way Through

I had reached the point where I was feeling like my oxygen was getting low as I was traveling through the story. They were close to their destination and it felt like the tipping point was about to happen. Do you know what the tipping point is? It's when something truly bad happens to the characters and you have to put the book down for a moment to just *breathe* and think to yourself "how will they ever survive this?" I could feel it coming. I was thinking to myself of all of the atrocious things that would happen and I stopped.

I just stopped reading.

I understand that it's pretend. I know that it's not real. I couldn't handle it. I didn't want to wade through the trauma that was about to happen. I enjoyed the other books in the series. I'm sure that this will turn out well in the end. I had tried on and off to make it through this but I gave myself permission to quit.

MiNRS 3 is a bit of a departure from the first two with more of a race than a battle mentality and a completely different set of landscapes. As in the other books there is no shortage of death and injury and kids with greater moral compasses than most adults I know. The conclusion occurred a little abruptly with a couple plot twists that were a little too tidy. And I wasn't as fond of some of the personal dynamics. We saw a character move from a bit irritating in book 1 to a full-on villain and I'm still confused as to the scapegoating of Christopher by Darcy and his corresponding adoration. It didn't resonate.

But, it was interesting and I'm glad I finished them up. Definitely good reads for adventure-minded tweens. Maybe not always their moms although I did enjoy it. I just needed to put on my middle-school child filter!

Overall a nice conclusion, but I had some nitpicks. 1) There were several stretch-science-until-it-breaks moments. 2) Thatcher's cardboard villain antics became tiresome by the end. 3) A don't-blink-or-you'll miss-it conclusion wrapped up the revolution awful fast. Still a fun dystopian series, I'd just hoped for a stronger finish.

Terror, tribulation and determination are the themes in this amazing series. It is sad that greed continues to plague mankind no matter where they live. Several life lessons are taught in this series - friendship is vital, knowledge is vital, caring about others is vital. This series will keep you on the edge of your seats, from beginning to end!

Aah, I love this so much! It’s the perfect way to end the trilogy!
That’s basically all I have to say about this one 😅

Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go cry myself to sleep because most of my favorite characters are dead.

This book was going along fine when it dropped 3 curse words from the middle of the book to the ending. It used damn twice and hell once.

Stunning, literally. I've never read another book, another series, in which my chest constricted while reading it, and it's been a long time since I read a book start to finish in one sitting.

I was not a huge fan of this one, but I also didn't read the other books in the series. So perhaps I was missing crucial plot points.
