When a midnight murder comes to Allport, Barb is observed conducting one of her “Correction Events” nearby. The police want to question the Grammar Nazi, and Retta insists the only way to save Barb’s reputation is to solve the crime before her secret activities are revealed to the whole town. The victim was a newcomer to Allport who was engaged to marry a local businessman’s attractive but spoiled daughter. Retta finds Frannie Habedank particularly irritating, since the younger woman commands the attention of just about any man who comes near her. Perhaps rightly and perhaps not, Retta is convinced Frannie killed her fiancé.As the Sleuth Sisters probe the mystery, they learn that Frannie’s father wasn’t completely happy with his prospective son-in-law. Many back in his home town considered Steve Deline a “slug,” and even the man’s own brother hasn’t got much good to say about him. It’s difficult to eliminate any suspect, but who would take violent action and end his life with a blunt metal object? On a different case the sisters uncover a puppy mill, which results in the seizure of two dozen neglected and pitiful dogs. Faye’s whole-hearted plunge into helping with their recovery means she’s distracted from other events. As Faye re-homes dogs and Barb frets about being exposed as the Grammar Nazi, Retta wrestles with a question of her own. She has a life-changing decision to make by the end of the year, and it’s already December. She’d like some advice, but when everyone she knows is involved, where can a woman get objective input?Though personal issues get in the way, the sisters know that when the situation takes a perilous turn, they can count on each other. Combine resources. Stand together. Sister power!
Maggie Pill is Peg Herring, but younger and much cooler.
Maggie and her husband love to travel to places they've never seen before, where they often hike and walk all day with a "Let's see where this leads us" approach.
In Peril, Plots, and Puppies by Maggie Pill, told from the various perspectives of the three sisters who make up the Smart Detective Agency, Barb goes out one night on one of her secret "correction events" in which she fixes the grammar of public signs. While finishing up, she hears a muffled sound and hurries away. The next day, she is startled to learn from her sister Faye that a murder took place the previous night and the body dumped a few hours later in the alley next to where Barb had just been. Soon, word has spread all over town that the "Grammar Nazi" killed the man. Barb faces a particular dilemma when Frannie Habedank, fiancée of Steve Deline, the murdered man, tries to hire the Smart Detective Agency to locate the Grammar Nazi and thus Steve's killer.

Barb, Faye, and Retta are plunged into another adventure, or should I say adventures. In each, there are unique and dangers, both human and canine. The sisters exposed the cruelty of a man who ran a puppy mill, helping to bring him to justice and find forever homes for the neglected and abused dogs that were rescued. When a man known for playing cruel pranks on women and weaker boys and men is found dead in an alley, an eye witness claims the murderer is the Grammer Nazi. The Grammer Nazi, whose identity is unknown, goes around correcting grammatically incorrect signage in the middle of the night. The sisters investigate the background of the murdered man at the insistence of the man's fiancée. As they uncover aspects of the murder, they come close to dangers that may very well end their own lives. Will revealed secrets lead to the end of sister's close relationship? Do the rescued dogs also rescue people?
Sister power! Barb, Faye, and Retta definitely have Sister Power! I love the fact these ladies have a realistic relationship. While they may argue, may drive each other crazy. their love always shines through. I enjoy the way the stories in this series are told from each sister's unique perspective. It allows the reader to really know each sister.
As always, there are twists and turns that kept me turning the pages to see what will happen next. Faye surprised me when she gave Karma a helping hand! Go, Faye!
My only complaint is I think this may be the last book in the series. The last Correction Event has taken place. Retta may be moving to Arizona. I hate to see the Sleuth Sisters end but...
If you enjoy stories with mature characters, I strongly urge you to read the entire Sleuth Sisters series. I've truly enjoyed this series.
A detective agency run by three middle-aged sisters run a detective agency in their small town in Lower Michigan. They solve murders, get in trouble, and may be harboring a grammar ninja. This is the sixth book in this cozy mystery series, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. When an engagement ends in the prospective groom’s death, the sisters are asked to help with the investigation. The bride-to-be believes the police are after her and wants the Sleuth Sisters to find someone who was seen by a witness. These sisters and their men are also dog lovers and rescue animals. Baby Boomers and those who love animals will surely enjoy these books. The narrator in the audiobook I listened to does a great job keeping the voices original.
Really loved the book, there was an interesting combination of stories going on. The puppy mill, the murder of a real cad and the sleuth sisters ongoing relationship, don't want to spoil anything. I really like how the author really gets it, the difficulty of relationships and how women of a certain age are perceived.
Really enjoy this series about 3 middle age sisters and their work solving crimes while working in their Detective agency. They get discounted because of being woman and older but them prove theirselves every time.
I just LOVE this series! From the beginning to the end it's a page turner with these three very different sisters. Still can't make up my mind which one I like best so I think I'll stick to all of them as favorites! Can't wait for the next one!!
I so enjoy this series. Maggie Pills spins a tale combining love, family, and enough good over evil to keep the pages turning. Cannot wait to start the next Sleuth Sisters adventure. Must say I will miss the Grammar Nazi.
I can always trust Maggie Pill to provide a wonderful mystery with my old friends the sleuth sisters. This one too. If anything it's better than the earlier ones.
I love this series . The sleuth sisters always find an interesting case to solve . I didn't know who did it until the very end . In each book I learn more about Barb, Faye and Retta.
I loved this edition of the Sleuth Sisters. Great subplots and side characters. Some of our favorites return and Barb's secret occupation comes into play. A great read.
