2014. Pregnant and alone, Dr. Quinn Allenby finds herself detained in New Orleans, tasked with obtaining footage for the finale of the Echoes from the Past series. As she delves deeper into the mystery of Madeline Besson, whose very existence seems to have been erased from history, Quinn finally gets closer to finding out the truth about her own psychic gift, and to a secret that had remained buried for over a century.
As Quinn prepares to share Madeline’s story with the world, she fails to recognize the danger she’s walking into, and helpless to stop the chain of events her inquiries have set in motion.
To write a novel was a dream of mine since I was a child. Life, my practical nature, and self-doubt got in the way, so it was decades later that an opportunity to write finally presented itself. I honestly didn't think I had what it takes to write a full-length novel, but once I faced the blank screen and my fingers touched the keyboard, everything disappeared except my characters and their surroundings, and suddenly I knew that this was what I was born to do.
Since then, I've written many books and have enjoyed some positive reviews, but sometimes, when I stop to reflect, I'm still amazed that I'm living my dream.

Dr. Quinn Allenby is pregnant. She goes from London to New Orleans to find her father who she never knew. While she is in Louisiana she dives into the mystery of Madeline Besson, whose existence seems to have been erased from history.
This series gets better and better and I can't put these books down. Irina Shapiro is a wonderful author and I am enjoying her captivating series!
Louisiana 1858: Following the sudden death of her father, fifteen year old Madeleine Besson is sent to live with his estranged family at the Arabella Plantation after his estate is sold off to pay his debts. Despite a frosty reception from her grandmother, Madeleine is welcomed by her cousin George and his pregnant wife Amelia. Grieving for her father and faced with an uncertain future, Madeleine is unprepared when long buried secrets and resentments rear their ugly head leading to tragic consequences.
Louisiana 2014: A now pregnant Quinn travels to New Orleans to meet Seth Besson and ascertain whether or not he is her father. When a DNA sample confirms that he is, Seth is keen to have a relationship with the daughter he never knew he had and introduces her to his son Brett and the rest of his family. Quinn’s desire to learn the source of her psychic gifts sees her delving into the mystery of Madeleine Besson, whose very existence has been erased from history. But what is her connection to Quinn?
The Unforgiven is the third engaging instalment of the Echoes of the Past series. Quinn’s successful search for her biological father sees her delving in to the past of an ancestor who died a couple of years prior to the American Civil War, when slavery was becoming a central source of political tension. The author has once again managed to paint an evocative picture of what life was like on a plantation. Madeleine has led a sheltered life and is terribly naive, her treatment at the hands of her family all the more abominable with an outcome that leaves the reader enraged and wanting some semblance of justice on her behalf.
Quinn’s trip to Louisiana, while pleasant and informative at first, soon sees the life of her and her unborn baby in danger when certain family secrets are unearthed. Gabe is going through a crisis of his own and omits to tell Quinn for fear of causing her stress and worry. When he decides to pay Quinn a surprise visit with Emma in tow, will he be too late?
Once again the author has managed to weave an intriguing tale of love, loss, secrets and betrayal which ultimately end in heartbreak and tragedy. By the third book, it’s easy to become emotionally invested in recurring characters and Quinn and Gabe were no exception which is a testament to the authors characterisation skills.
I received an advanced free audible copy of The Unforgiving and I am voluntarily reviewing it. Once again narrator Wendy Wolfson really outdid herself in this instalment, masterfully bringing the story and characters to life. Her use of accents was exceptional, perfectly capturing the traditional Southern/Creole drawl. I recommend this series for fans of historical fiction, dual time mysteries and psychic gifts.
This book was a really good read; the pace was a little slow but the content grew and the growing storyline is great wanting you to engage in the series. Very good read with lovely characters looking forward to reading the next!
This will be the last of these I listen to. I really have to like and respect the protagonist of a novel at least a tiny bit. For someone who has such caring for the dead, Quinn has little concern for or understanding of how her actions affect others. She and Gabe have both behaved in self centered ways in the past 2 novels but this one takes the cake. Not only does she unearth crimes and sensitive issues that, if revealed, will have emotional and real world consequences for people she knows in the present but on top of this, she decides to let Rhys make an episode for the show about it all- AND ALL WITHOUT TALKING TO THOSE EFFECTED. She never even considers it in any way shape or form. And doing it without letting them know what she'd found out would have destroyed her relationships with them because they would have considered it a betrayal. And even if Quinn didn't think of it regarding these folks she is supposed to care about, then Rhys would have recognized this as a lawsuit waiting to happen.
The other thing about Quinn that really bugs me is Shapiro writes Quinn as meekly and lovingly accepting all kinds of changes in her life that Gabe asks of her. She is shown as saint-like rather than as a real human being who is going to have conflicted emotions.
And while I'm at it, something that adds to my irritation with this audio book is that the reader portrays Quinn and each main female from the past with baby doll voices. Hard to take anyone seriously when they sound so childish. In fact it's the same voice that the reader uses to portray the 4 year old! Except the 4-year old comes across as having more character and brains!
Irina Shapiro has graced us with another audiobook that has left me wanting more. Narrated by Wendy Wolfson, I listened to The Unforgiven, book three in the Echoes From The Past series nonstop since downloading it. I really wish I could tell you all the gritty details, but if you haven't paid attention and haven't picked up this series yet, I'll keep my review as spoiler free as I can.
Quinn is back on the hunt for her father, and hopefully the truth about where her gift comes from. Her clues lead her to New Orleans, Louisiana and a family that seems to welcome her with open arms. What begins as a weekend away from Gabe turns into several weeks as a new story unfolds before her eyes. Madeline is a monied young lady from Louisiana in 1858. She's adored by her father, as an only child. But when he dies and the estate is sold to pay his debts, she's sent to live at the Arabella Plantation with a grandmother she never knew and a cousin who welcomes her fully. While initially excited to learn more about the family her father never spoke of, she finds that he had been banished years before and her grandmother hates her in place of him. But no one will tell her what terrible sin he committed.
There's no record of Madeline in the history books or in the family grave. Quinn longs to know more about the young woman and uses her gift to unravel a life cut short. But her own life is turned on it's head, and as she comes to terms with her own heritage, she'll find that alligators and voodoo are not the only dangers in Nola.
I think I've said this every time I review this book...it deserves to be a TV series. The time hopping adventure Shapiro creates are completely enthralling and deserves a wider platform. I've become emotionally involved in these characters, something that usually wears off after a few books. But these have such backstories that I have to know more!
There was a small teaser in the books end that gave me hope that the series will never end. I could red about, and listen to, Quinn's adventures forever. Each story is so different and compelling, one could never get bored of her glimpses into the past. The fact that her personal life is full of wild twists and turns doesn't hurt anything either!
I highly, highly, highly recommend this book series too all book lovers, but especially those who love some mystery and history in their reads.
As with the first two I loved this book and couldn’t stop listening. I love the combination of past and present and Quinn’s ability to live the past by touching an object owned by someone deceased. I say live because that’s how it is for Quinn. She doesn’t see the past she lives it. I like that the author switched things up a little in the setting of this book. I could never get bored with the a book set in England but still I liked that she ensured we were kept interested. Family secrets were exposed, some worth murdering for. My heart was pounding for Quinn and her baby. The preview of book four had me screaming me for more
Once again Wendy Woodson is the only choice to narrator this series. She masterfully brings the stories to life
3.5* The Audible narration on this one really distracted from the story. Wish I could go back and read the physical book without Wendy Wolfson's Deep Southern-American accent ringing in my head. Also at many times Quinn's and Emma's voices were the same. I am enjoying the series and really like the way the author is developing Quinn's story. However, I struggled a bit with Quinn's decision -making, unnecessary stubbornness and her disregard for Gabe's feelings or concerns, especially in her role as a co-parent and expectant mother. There were a few points in which I genuinely disliked her. Fortunately, the book ends in a way that made me feel that she might "finally see the light" and get her priorities in order.
I know it is historically correct but I always get the ick feeling reading about an underage girl having sex with an adult and it kind of taints my enjoyment of the story
More 4.5/5. A great addition to the Echoes books. And finally, an answer to where Quinn's abilities originated. As usual, there are parallel stories - Quinn's search for her biological father and the tale from the past. Fairly well edited.
Quinn is still on her quest to find her biological father. Her last known candidate is Seth Besson of New Orleans, Louisiana. Despite Gabe's reservations, Quinn travel to Louisiana alone. Gabe is tied up with his job and keeping Emma in school. Quinn meets Seth, who is surprisingly accepting of her reason for meeting with him. He readily agrees to her DNA request, and they patiently await results. Meanwhile, Gabe is still in England, facing several family crises alone. He decides to keep things to himself, thinking to spare Quinn from worry. When Gabe is finally able to meet Quinn in New Orleans, will it be too late?
In the past, Madeline has just been left an orphan at 15. Everything and everyone she knows is upended in one tragic night. Sent to live with a family she didn't even know existed, she is adrift in heartbreak and uncertainty. Why didn't she know about her family? Why does her grandmother hate her so? Within months of her arrival, she finds herself taken advantage of, naively falling in love, and then with child. She is then packed off to a cabin to await her child with only her Mammy for company. When she finds a discarded button, truths begin to reveal themselves and none of them are very good.
How is Madeline's life tied to Quinn's? What do they have in common? And how will the tragedies of the past bleed into the present?
Once again, Ms. Shapiro weaves an intriguing and heartbreaking story of secrets, love, heartbreak, and loss. Against that, Quinn and Gabe remain true and committed - loving each other, Emma, and their unborn child. And, Echoes is picked up for another season, so more tales are sure to be unearthed. Enjoy!
This series is absolutely captivating! This book follows archaeologist, Dr. Quinn Allenby, as she tracks down her biological father...in New Orleans, LA. The pregnant, and soon to be married, Quinn has narrowed her search to Seth Besson, owner of a trucking company and a descendant of a wealthy plantation owner. Seth does not have the special gift like Quinn, that allows her to see into the past by touching an object from that era...so from whom did she inherit this gift? A special fan, that once belonged to her great grandmother, is the only remaining artifact from the pre-civil war era. What Quinn discovers will blow you away and just may be the cause of her own demise. Meanwhile, fiance' Gabe is dealing with his own set of life changing events back in the UK.
WOW!! Another incredible historical novel ... I mean, who can resist a dual time line that includes Louisiana and all that it's famous for - cultures, foods, swamps and family traditions - then, mix in a little genealogy and some voodoo ... it was SURE to get my attention. As our heroine Dr. Quinn Allenby continues her mission to find out who her biological father is ... and maybe solve the mystery of her psychic gift ... she travels to New Orleans. Her search is very productive, but in doing so, she has uncovered a problem that someone wants to keep hidden!! Also the last chapter is MIND-BLOWING!!!!
A really good listen and the narrator manages to capture your imagination with the words and lures you into the story quite nicely. You like the characters, intrigue and the unique ability that Quinn has that helps her in her unique journey. Now, if you haven't, check out the first two books in the series, and she's a new author to you,I'd check them out, because your going to want to catch up. Think that's exactly what I'm going to do to. So when you get a chance to either read the book or listen to the audio version, pick up a copy and enjoy.
3,5/5 Here again we follow two stories, one in the present and one in the past through Quinn's visions.
The story in the present is half Quinn finding and connecting with her father and his family, and half her fiancé's sudden family problems. I must say it was just an okay read until something happens to Quinn I didn't expect (and she didn't either). Well, family is rarely rainbow and sunshine, but some people take matters too far. The story in the past - about Quinn's ancestors - was much more interesting, and even if I suspected a part of it, I was still shocked by the whole.
I so enjoyed reading the history of Quinn’s family. Irina Shapiro brings her characters to life so vividly that I can’t wait to see what’s next. Each book in the series has been better than the previous one. The betrayal of Brett was so unexpected that I cried for Quinn and truly expected her to be left behind with Madeline. I recommend this book and the whole series to anyone looking for a great story with romance, intrigue and suspense with a bit of detective work mixed all together.
I'm really glad I kept going with this series. This was my favorite so far. There are a lot of twists i didn't see coming. However when Quinn was stuck in the tomb with a fully charged cell phone why didn't she simply change her outgoing message to reveal her location? She knew people were going to call and you don't need a signal to change your voice message. Otherwise I truly loved it!!! I've already moved on to the next in the series.

This series has it all - history, romance, intrigue, fantasy, and so much more. The story draws you in, and the characters are so relatable that you can't help feeling like you know them. Besides the current day storyline, reading the historical chapters is fascinating as well. It's as if a door to the past has been opened and you are allowed to peek through. This is definitely a 'not to be missed' series!
Audio book Review Book 3 in the series. This series is fantastic. In this one it will have you glued to the story from the very beginning till the very end . You will wonder what will happen next . How the past is coming through to the future. Some secrets are told in this one that will explain some incident in book 2 . How will the family take them them bringing the secrets out in the open .
The performance of Wendy was good. Her voice is strong, steady and clear
Irina Shapiro is One of the best authers of historical romance. She doesnt just write a story. She creates a time travel portal to a different time in historie. Its like you can smell and feel the place She takes you to. I WAS in NOLA. I WAS on that plantation. I was in the swamps. I get so caught up in her books, that I forget where I am and what I do. These books are so heartbreaking and desperat and sad. That if not for the parts of Quins life. This would be so so sad. I Really love it.
Quinn tracks her own family to New Orleans. This book has a wealth of complex family relationship problems for the archeologist who has item touch past remembering gifts. where did the gift come from is the guestion? The author does a great job experiencing New Orleans past and present. eighteen fifty eight was the perfect choice for this time adventure, right before the greatest upheaval of the nineteenth century.
Quinn's search for her ancestors starts with her biological father and the author takes her readers on a complicated trail of deception, pain and death. I found book 3 to be very engaging especially as Madeline 's story unfolded through her fan, once belonging to her mother but I'm used with an incredible tale. As usual, Quinn's psychic gifts reveal an incredible family history that threatens her safety.
Another home run! Irina just keeps them coming. Only problem is having to wait for the next one! I can't stand these reviewers who tell the whole darn story in their reviews. Irina is in my top 5 authors, and that says a lot, that is HUGE, as I am a voracious reader. Thank you so much for this series Irina, hopefully, they will continue for many years to come!
Another amazing book in this series. Wonderfully crafted with characters that are realistic, scary, and fascinating. Past and present play like dancing couples parting and coming together to create a rhythm that spans time. Quinn learns of her family line and its unexpected but plausible. Well written and memorable.
This is a fantastic series. I love the mystery and intrigue of this. Its told in past and present. Once I started to listen I could not out it down. Its definitely a page turner. Theres lots of twists and turns, its like putting a puzzle together and as you listen you put the puzzle together. This is more than a five star read. I definitely recommend. Shauna Joesten
Audible This series was a gift from the author. And I highly enjoy it. I'm looking forward to the rest of the series. I am surprised that she would not discuss her findings with her biological father before committing to doing the Program. It is not only her story, she might want to give him a heads up.
Quinn the famous archeologist with the gift of seeing into the past has gone to New Orleans and has found her biological father and half brother. Through the gift of a fan that belonged to her ancestor she discovers the treachery of the past as she grapples with the treachery of the present.
I have read the first 3 books in this series. The first 2 were okay but not great. I am more interested in the modern story than the historical ones. I guess that is because you already know that the character s died badly from the very start of the book. This one tied the history with the modern tale so interestingly.
What a gift Irina has to craft the stories she tells. I love how long her books are the characters she crafts and the story lines. She must be an interesting person to know. I wish her a long prolific career so that she can entrance me with many more hours of entertainment as I travel the paths she so talently weaves.
The story continues about Quinn in her psychic abilities and her search for her family . You know there's always going to be a murder mystery involved but goes a little further . Glad there's another book coming .
I have enjoyed these first three books Very much. I like the two story lines in each, gives you more depth. I really like all the characters in these books. Am counting the days till the 4th one.
Decent book, definitely need to read from Book 1 onwards to make sense of the entire novel series. Found a lot of grammatical & spelling errors - not sure if that had to do with the ebook version
