Vinaya grew up with her face partly obscured by the books she was reading. She knew more about her favourite characters than her next door neighbours. When not reading she was writing and immersing herself in imaginary worlds.

Writing took a backseat as she pursued a career in IT, until a fateful day in December 2006. On that cold winter morning in Dallas Texas, she met with a near fatal car crash. During her lengthy recovery, from wounds of body and mind, she once again found solace in writing and picked up the pen with renewed focus.

As a dreamer, I have always wanted to write a book on Supernatural creatures, and not the one from the Bible, but the ones that are a part of Indian Folklore. The stories that our Grandma told us, the shadows lurking in the corners, keeping us from going to the washroom alone at night:P yes, I was a scared kid.

The Trickster was indeed a treat and this is some serious storytelling. The writing style was kept simple, but the plot has a certain edge to it. It is a great thriller and it slowly unfolds and occupies your mind and keeps you guessing. The story is about a girl called Diya who loses her parents in a terrible car accident. As much as she wants to believe that it was an accident, her sixth sense points towards a possible foul play. As she comes to India to visit her father’s best friend Sunny, she discovers a lot of terrible secrets about her family- both maternal and paternal side. As she finds out about her heritage and her family background, one character stands out- The Trickster/Chakwa, who kills people by exploiting their weakness. The Trickster can be anyone because it can change form, making it difficult to catch. But Diya will have to find a way to catch him, or she might end up dead. But whom can she trust?

Supernatural creatures, if placed in a plot wrongly, can tend to make the entire story look foolish. They are tricky creatures, in reality as well as literature. But the author has weaved a great story, a thriller. The characters are so relatable and easy to follow. The plot gets cluttered sometimes because there are a lot of characters, but maybe that’s just to create confusion, so we miss the real killer.

I greatly enjoyed reading this book, it was gripping and dramatic and it was a well-planned plot. Highly Recommended. especially my Indian readers. A brilliant debut.

I just loved this book. It was so interesting that I could not put it down. When I started reading this book I expected a book full of suspense, killings, supernatural elements and I found everything in between the pages of this book. Did I really find a monster or was it something else?

The main character in the book Diya loses her parents in a car crash in Boston. She receives a letter from India and she comes to meet her extended family whom she never heard of. Little did she know that she was not only coming to a loving family but also exposing herself to a danger lurking in the shadows by coming to India. Chakwa - The Master Trickster who ruined her parent's life is now in her life too. Will he succeed again and kill Diya?

The narration was good and the story telling skills if the author are impressive. Even though it was her debut novel she has written an interesting book. The one thing I did not like about the was the use of unnecessary difficult words where she could have used simpler ones. The whole book was filled with heavy vocabulary which was totally not necessary. It was a big turn off for me as I have seen many authors using this kind of vocabulary in their debut novel which they might think is cool, but it isn't.

I really loved the cover of the book. It is so intriguing and gives mysterious vibes and you might feel like giving this book a chance. The was was no doubt very interesting and can keep a reader hooked. There were many characters in the book but only few which really mattered. I think this book is a good time pass.

What I liked the most about the book was that it is almost genre bending. At the outset, you feel like it's a supernatural thriller but as you go deeper you realize it has got so many layers to it.
The characterization of the protagonist and her grief is touching. The book tackles so many layers of human emotion- grief, fear, love, loss, penance, resentment, revenge et al.
It is not just about unravelling the mask of the Chakwa but also about overcoming your own fears. It is quite a page turner and manages to keeps you on your toes till the end. The host of complex characters make the story all the more interesting.
Certainly didn't feel like I was reading a debut novel. Looking forward to more from her.

There's a difference between having a suspense thriller by putting in red herrings and fake clues like Agatha Christie and by putting in so many characters in so many relations like this book. I felt like I needed a genealogy app to just sort out who is related to who and how in the book.

Diya's parents die in an accident, and in their death departed the only family she ever had. Well at least she thought so, until a letter she received claimed otherwise.
She follows the letter- leading her to India, only to discover that mystery and death accompanied her halfway around the globe.

She's rattled with the gusts of lies lurking around her existence. The odour of death dragging her deeper into the myth of 'Chakwa- the master trickster'.

With each passing moment the myth breathes reality. Her worst nightmare surrounding her.
Will she fight it? Will she he able to defeat it? Or, will she breathe her last the same way her parents did.

The author has brewed an incredible plot, providing you with enough information needed to keep you thrilled and at the same time engulfed.
You'll find your thoughts postulating the next few pages.

The plot is defined in all extremity, yet that detailing is so nicely penned that not for a second you'll feel that you're mislead or dragged into knowing too much about what isn't needed.

The characterization could have been a bit diluted, it engages your thoughts away from the plot.

After losing her parents in a car accident, Diya Mathur’s world collapses. Left all alone in Boston with no family, Diya has nowhere to go until a letter arrives from India. Diya suddenly finds her long lost family, one that she was unaware about since she thought her parents are orphans. While contemplating if she should go to India to meet this unfamiliar family, some mysterious occurrences force Diya to believe that her parents were murdered and it wasn’t an accident.

Diya travels to India to meet the family from her paternal side and suddenly feels at home. She finds solace in this new family but still finds it hard to believe that her parents died in an accident. Sudden pile up of dead bodies from mysterious deaths around her, her sixth sense points to some foul play and starts digging up the past that reveals Chakwa – The Master Trickster, who won’t stop until he kills Diya too.

Stories revolving around supernatural entities have been a part of my childhood. My grandma used to narrate such stories to me so that I won’t stay up late till night. Much to my surprise, Vinaya Bhagat convinced me that supernatural entities exist through her book. The plot is well thought of and very convincing. The story unfolds at a pace that gives you enough time to contemplate the next action and you wait with a heart racing speed when the Chakwa will be revealed and will Diya survive or meet the ungrateful death, just like her parents.

The supporting characters played a major part in the pace of the story. How Diya discovers her parent’s family and travels overseas to meet them, how the death of a sneaky neighbor next door moves her and she finds her own path of discover the death of her parents and how she finds solace in her new found love. Each and every character had a part to play and the story unfolded in the blink of an eye.

The Trickster has the power to trick you in believing that supernatural entities exist and by the time I finished this, I was fully convinced someone was watching me.

When I requested the book Trickster from the Author Vinaya Bhagat, I didn’t know what I was laying my hands on. I thought it to be a story on Supernatural beings. The stories we latch onto the moment we hear it from our Grandparents. But (a big, bold BUT) was I wrong? Oh Yes! I was in for a Big surprise!

Publication Date: February 20th, 2018

Publisher: Harper Collins India

Page Count: 240 pages

Opening Sentence: "Manu realized that they had been tricked, but it was too late."

I don’t know what I want to talk about – the Characters or the fact that I was scared to my wits, which is by the is a very rare sight to see. The goriness of the story and the fact that most of the chapter ended in a cliffhanger is what made the book unputdownable.

What should I talk about? Characters or the Book? Let’s start with the Book.
The book Trickster lives up to its name, very tricky and keeps you on the edge until the last page. Trickster is a story of Diya, whose parents are killed in an unnatural horrific car accident (or so Diya thought). While mourning her Parents, she gets a letter from India, shattering her belief that she knew everything about her parents and their horrific past India. She comes to India to know more about her parents family and unravel the dark secret that had forced her parents to flee and hide in America. But in the process of finding more about her parents, she unravels the horror of the legend of Chakwa - The Master Trickster. Chakwa is a Trickster, who plays with the mind of people, causing chaos and death in its wake...

Will Diya be able to defeat The Master Trickster in its own game or get tricked and succumb?

Now the Characters
Let’s talk about Diya first. Diya’s character is like any other girl, more humane and very well developed. The instant connection readers form with the 'The protagonist' is what sets the entire mood of the book. There were a few characters who were able to lighten up the mood of the gorrishness of the book. Author Vinaya Bhagat introduced a lot of characters throughout the book, most of them were smoothly gelled into the story but a few characters were kind of thrown into the story causing a bit of confusion.

The Book has many intrinsic layers to it, woven smoothly into the story. Even though being a debut book, the narration is par with the majority of Indian writers. Author Vinaya has put in a lot of effort and done a thorough job of researching the story. A single misstep and the story could have gone awry.

The book has a very interesting storyline. The Book is not at all a light read. It tricks you, confounds you into believing that you are reading a Paranormal genre, BUT NO!!! It’s more than that. The story draws you into the world of horror filled sleepless nights. However much you try to not read the book, but it holds you into its death grip until you know the answers to all the questions you had. I know, Creepy right?

Quote: Fear was a currency that led only to Bankruptcy.

Recommendations!
The Trickster is a kind of read that provides full of entertainment. It’s definitely a recommended read for the fans of Horror, Thriller, and Supernatural genre. It’s a brilliant book with a refreshing vibe of beautiful mountainside freshness that surrounds the story.

"I received a review copy of this book from the author in exchange of an honest review.

After reading Vinaya Bhagat's Trickster I realized, that perhaps I've finally found the Indian mix of Sidney Sheldon and Dan Brown.

When I sat down to read this book, or even when I received this book, I had expected it to be a supernatural thriller. (Well, that was all that I could deduce from the amazingly beautiful review.) But this book was so much more than that.

Trickster is the story of Diya Mathur, a recently orphaned girl, who suddenly finds out that there were secrets her parents were hiding from her, secrets and things she never really expected to find out about them. Then arrives a mysterious letter from India and in enters an Indian family her father was really close to, but Diya had never known about.

Wondering if this is the right thing to do or not, or whether the family is really who they claim to be, she takes a trip to India to meet this so-called family of hers only to find out things about her parents and her parents' families that she could never fathom.

And of course there is the tale of Chakwa, the master trickster. The spooky tale of the Chakwa that kept me awake and scared of the confines of my own room for a good many nights. It isn't so hard to guess what the reason behind that is. Well of course, Bhagat's beautiful writing style. Add to that the interesting concept and story behind this book, and the mixed outcome was nothing but enchanting.

The opening scene of this fast-paced novel, in itself left me spell-bound. By the time I read the first few chapters, I was hooked. With no guts to put the book down, I wanted to unravel this mystery as soon as possible, and yet, I didn't want the book to end.

One thing that I didn't like about it was perhaps the presence of too many characters. They were far too many and some didn't have any significance to the story at all. Not to forget the twisted story of Diya's ancestors.

Then again, there was the climax. Damn, that climax was so shocking that for a second, I just couldn't believe it actually happened. But, you know, it was actually a plausible one. Now, I won't reveal Bhagat's secret here and tell you what it was about. (I'm mean that way!)

One thing that I can say, though, with complete honesty after reading the book is that Bhagat is bound to win hearts with it. I await more books to read and review from her. (*hugs and kisses*)

I read this book during Halloween and i think it was the best time for such a spooky book. This is story of Diya who is newly - orphaned. She thinks she is absolutely alone when she gets a letter from an indian family claiming to be her parents relatives. When she visits them, so many secrets become revealed changing her life entirely. The Chakwa- whose terror doesn't let her sleep, haunts her at every step. She gets to know the reality and finds her true love. Her life turns upside down. This book has everything needed to thrill you and you will turn your pages as quickly as your stomach will allow. There is a combination of so many emotions- love & betrayal, bravery & cowardice, scenic beauty & spooky forests and so much more. The characterisation was a bit complex but thats an important aspect of a thriller.

I'm reading a mystery thriller after a long time, and I should say that I really enjoyed the book, especially towards the end. The book is paced slightly unevenly, even turning mushy at times. There are also a couple of chapters with a barrage of characters, which was confusing. But I did sit past midnight to finish the second half in one go, and I would most likely re-read the book, both of which are, for me, indications of a great book. The story lives up to the expectation of its title.

Trickster is Vinaya Bhagat’s first novel - a suspense-filled page turner with a host of characters and darkness.

It is about a girl named Diya Mathur, who loses her parents in a strange accident, and moves to India for the summer to unravel certain secrets about her parent’s family. However, her dreams and her relatives are haunted by a mysterious figure called the Chakwa - the master trickster.

Does the Chakwa exist or is it a figment of their collective imaginations? If there is no Chakwa, then who is responsible for the series of murders that follows Diya wherever she goes? Can Diya escape the monster that lurks in the shadows?

First of all let me just say, that it is extremely refreshing to have the opportunity to read Indian writing that is something other than the extremely highbrow (Rushdie, Ghosh, etc.) and the Chetan Bhagats, Durjoy Dattas and Ravinder Singhs of this world.

This is a light read, but still draws you in and keeps you engaged till the very last page. Diya’s character is well-developed and isn’t stereotypically western or NRI, which as someone who has spent a lot of time between both sides of the world, I very much appreciate.

My only two critiques are very minor: one - there are a lot of characters who get introduced at the same time, and sometimes it’s a bit difficult to keep track of who is who. I would have loved a family tree as a reminder! The second is that although Bhagat has done a really great job of describing the setting, but sometimes she flips from one place to the next so quickly that we don’t know that the character is now standing inside or outside. Then again I’m easily confused so it could just be me!

That said, however, these are small things that were only a slight distraction. This is a fantastic and engaging debut, and I can’t wait to see what’s next from her.

It is an amazing page turner with an unexpected twist at the end. Apart from that I liked the vocabulary. The variety of words used to describe each situation is very good.

Trickster took me to a world of memories and fantasies. A thrilling experience of Chakwa the master Trickster is beautifully portrayed. Diya and her companions were haunting me for some time. Really liked the mountain settings, unspoken romantic moments and the chilling nights. The suspense was very well kept until the end. Vinaya is a promise to Indian English literature.

Firstly, I thank the author for giving me an opportunity to review such an awesome (yes, I mean the etymological meaning!) work of thriller fiction. Or should I say, Horror-Thriller fiction?

Trickster is a “one-of-a-kind” thriller novel, that will pin you down with sheer excitement and anxiety, leaving you breathless every moment. From the very beginning, I was impressed by the way the author initiated the story and carried on the narrative with near-flawlessness.

Another thing that I truly loved about the book was that this was the first time I’ve come across a lead female protagonist who is at the centre of the horror-thriller plot. In my seventh book review, which was of the thriller book Agniputr, I had talked about the (stereo)typical conventions that exist in thriller writing. And, trust me, Trickster is one of those very few books in Indian English Literature that has successfully disintegrated the conventional norms of writing a thriller fiction. No wonder why I loved it so much!

Thirdly, I was overwhelmed by the plot itself. Unique. Creative. Innovative. And Intelligent. The plot was woven extremely well, kudos to the author for such a great work! The plot was original and genuine, has depth within it, and also has the ability of having the reader hooked on to the book till the last page. And those cliffhangers…yes, those freakishly horrifying cliffhangers…I adore them all!

The characters were equally well-constructed. In fact, I felt that the author has not ignored even the smallest of the characters, and has devoted them her undivided attention throughout the book. That was very splendid indeed.

Finally, I was glad to cone across such a book, where the simple and coherent language is invested with elements of horror, suspense, and thrill. Now that’s something you don’t see everyday! I was further more elated to realise that the author has excellently conveyed profound emotions and feelings that surge within the deep recesses of the human mind in such a way as if it were a piece of cake. Believe me, that ain’t an easy task! The depiction of traumatic emotions and depressive feelings, followed by the sense of epiphany in some instances, were superbly expressed, leaving behind almost no room for error.

Yes, I loved this book altogether. I can’t thank the author enough for letting me have an opportunity to read such a great horror-thriller book.

I've not expected anything else other than a supernatural novel when I received this book. But NO. There's so much more in this book. This is the first time I've read anything like this.

The book from the very first page held my attention and I just felt damn uncomfortable when I stopped reading for a single minute. It has a certain thrill which won't allow anyone to put this book down and do other things. The book is full of twists and turns. It'll not only scare you, it'll also make you feel anxious of the happenings. It gave me goosebumps many a times. The sacry scenes are written with such precision, that it never made me feel over the top which most of the horror stories do.

During our childhood we've came across a lots and lots of supernatural characters and we all were scared hearing of them. But I've never imagined such a concept can be taken in writing a book in modern time and never make it look like an impossible tale. The author's creative mind made it look like a real story happening in front of my eyes. The intellegince with which she has built the plot is also truly notable.

Now coming to he characters, another unique feature of this book is a female protagonist in a horror-thriller tale. It's really unconventional in today's time. The obsession of male protagonists in every thriller book is just becoming jarring with every passing day. Diya's vulnerability yet hunger for truth to Ronie's eagerness to help Diya everything is very prominent throughout the book. All the other side characters were also built cunningly and I kept  guessing about the next happenings till the last page.

Lastly, I want to thank the author @vinayabhagat for sending me the book.  Wish you all the very best for your upcoming books!

4.5/5. Guys please read this book. It's an exceptional horror-thriller. And you'll not get this kind of books easily nowadays. Once again It's a MUST READ.

Name- Trickster
Author- Vinaya Bhagat
Genre- Thriller, Fiction
Pages- 240

Vinaya Bhagat has written several short stories but her debut novel, Trickster, proves that she is definitely a promising novelist too. The fast- paced thriller is a must read for those who enjoy this genre.

The protagonist Diya Mathur is left all-alone, in a foreign land to deal with her life and problems when her parents are killed in a car accident. Just when she has started accepting this fact, she receives a mysterious letter, all the way from India, from her father's family, that she never knew existed. A desire for family makes Diya go to India and unfold the truth of her father's family. But her time in India entangles her into more secrets- about her mother, her family and the terror of the demon Chakwa. If it wasn't for Ronnie, his father's friend's son, Diya would have to deal with all this by herself.

The opening scene itself promised a page-turner ahead. The writing is so engaging that it keeps you on the edge, till you reach the end, which I must mention is difficult to guess. The ever-growing fear in Diya's life is so aptly described that the reader feels it. The descriptions are detailed but not dragged which is a great thing about the book. The book has way too many characters which made it difficult for me to keep a track of each one, only to make me realise that many of them could have been eliminated. The descriptive writing creates a beautiful imagery of every scene and situation. It is a book which you won't want to stop before finishing.

Thank you @vinayabhagat for providing me the review copy in exchange for an honest review.

The story begins when Diya’s parents are killed by the “Chakwa” in what appears to be a car crash. Diya continues to live in her parents’ house but it appears that a mysterious entity is out to get Diya as well. Diya remembers her father telling her a story in childhood about the “Chakwa”, i.e. a trickster who can take any form he desires, animal or human.
Though Diya was told that her parents had no family, she receives a letter from India from her father’s relatives inviting her to visit them. Diya flies to India in order to find out more about her family.
She is warmly welcomed by Sunny Varghese and his family and learns that they were her father’s adoptive family. Sunny’s son Ronnie becomes a special friend to her specially when mysterious events continue to take place and deaths keep happening.
Diya meets her grandfather and much of her father’s family history becomes known to her. She then tries to find her mother’s family.
It is apparent to Diya that someone is trying to kill her, but is it the “Chakwa” or is it a human killer?
Diya manages to find her mother’s relatives and spends some days with them. It is when she is staying there that more supernatural events take place.
The story is definitely very interesting. The author has skilfully built up the climax in a way that the reader is wondering who the real “Chakwa” is. It is only at the very end that the identity of the “Chakwa” is revealed. I recommend “Trickster” as an extremely gripping suspense thriller.

Synopsis : Diya loses her parents in an accident and now, she is all alone in this big bad world. Out of the blues, a mysterious letter arrives from India. Suddenly, Diya has a chance at being part of a family again. But, moving from Boston to India will bring her closer to the place where horror of Chakwa - the Master Trickster - first started.

Trickster is a supernatural thriller and turned out to be really different from most books of this genre. I wasn't a fan of Supernatural Thrillers before I read Trickster. Chakwa - The demon - The Master Trickster won't let you sleep before you complete this book. The book got a little spooky for me at times but, Bhagat's writing style is commendable. Her keen observation and attention to subtle details of characters and her peeks into the nature are hard to miss. She definitely paints a picture in your mind by playing with your imagination. Undoubtedly, She is going to be the Sidney Sheldon of India. The storyline is well thought-out with the most unexpected plot twists. Vinaya plays with our 'fear of the unknown' and presents to us Chakwa who is straight out of our nightmares. Overall, it's an amazing book to binge read this weekend.

Are you a person who love being glued to a book in a way that you forgot your dinner and didn't brush 'yesterday night' and now you are about to miss the morning brushing time?

Do you love reading a thriller novel and resolve the mysteries before the author unveils them?

Do you love the author challenging you when you put on your 'Mr. Holmes' cap?

Then,

Vinaya's Trickster is definitely the one for you.

Diya suddenly losses her parents and is left alone to fight the world until a mysterious letter reveals she is not really all alone. She moves to India and the plot continues smoothly and more interestingly as new characters and new revelations come out.
Characters that you can relate to enhances the story line, adds layers to the plot and brings out a well woven story that I am sure you are going to enjoy till the end. Description of characters/locations gives enough details to the reader to visualize the whole story & doesn't bore you at any point.

A must read, this one, which for sure will keep you fight 'Chakwa' along with Diya till the end,

And,

Keep guessing!!! :-)

It has been a very long time since I read a book this fast. Page after page the author kept me hooked and curious. Diya's story begins in Boston with the death of both her parents in an "accident" and takes Diya and the reader on a rollercoaster ride filled with thrills. What I liked most about this novel is the subtle way the author builds up fear in Diya's mind and the reader's mind. The descriptions are beautiful. In one passage where Diya is hiding from the villain I loved the following lines. "Her mouth felt dry and the cold air hurt her teeth. A sharp stone stuck into her thigh through the thin fabric of her jeans. Diya repressed a shudder as something crawled up her arm, to her shoulder and cheek." When I was reading this part my hand involuntarily went to my cheek as if to brush away the creepy crawly. A wonderful achievement by the author to make you live in the book.

Vinaya Bhagat is a master storyteller, in Trickster she has created complex and relatable characters. I fell in love with her characters and not just the protagonist Diya. I loved the character of the grandmother Elizabeth and the complexity of her emotions that the author has conveyed through delicate brush stroke sentences like "I may not have given birth to him but that never stood between us.". To me this one sentence speaks so much about the thread of parental love in all its forms that the author has beautifully woven through the book. Kudos to Vinaya Bhagat for an amazing novel that to me spans genres

A very skillfully written psychological thriller that really plays mind games with you. The author has really managed to build the atmosphere where you don’t know whom the main character Diya Mathur should trust. Then she has built some of the scariest episodes in the book that make you terrified and that is without any blood or gore in sight, that takes a good command on the story and language. Sample this paragraph from the chapter called Resort: In the dim glow of the few lights that were on, the opulent house was alive with shadows, ready to pounce. Soft rustles and hisses, creaks and ticks kept them company as they moved through the labyrinthine house.

I fell in love with the story which is amazing but what I enjoyed most was the beautiful writing. Each of them are gems on their own. I have underlined so many sentences in this book :) some of my favorite are -
1) Elizabeth placed her hands on her knees and got up. Her bones creaked like unoiled hinges.
2) The empty house huddled under the leaden winter sky like a hibernating animal.
3) They leave were turning brown, beginning to rot, like flame-seared flesh.
4) Did fragrance sow seeds of desire, she wondered?

I am completely blown over by the novel Trickster written by debut author Vinaya Bhagat. The characters in the book are so real they could be your neighbors or friends. Bhagat has woven the thrilling plot with description of the place where the story unfolds and it is almost real, almost like you are there in the mountains looking down at the mist filled valleys. If that is not enough the ending has been so carefully crafted and when it is revealed it is a shock but also feels natural. A powerhouse debut

I had read so many reviews on Instagram and goodreads about this book that I was sure it would be a great book to read. I raced through the first few chapters as the story is so fast paced and keeps the reader curious, this was expected. What I did not expect was the beauty of the writing, the lucid flow and descriptions of the world inside a character's heart and the world outside. After the initial sprint I slowed down and read a little slower enjoying the story and the writing both. I want to congratulate the writer Vinaya Bhagat for an extremely well written book.

I thoroughly enjoyed the novel Trickster by Vinaya Bhagat. It is fast paced with relatable characters. But what I liked most about the book is that there are so many layers to the story and each layer reveals a different truth. What I admired most about the writer was the way she revealed these secrets like a Russian doll where you think you have seen the last of it and it opens and there is another doll inside it and so on. Each chapter of the book revealed something important and that too in a very lucid language. A big thumbs up!
