"One dead wife is a tragedy. Two is a pattern."

Eulalie Park knows that when a woman is murdered, her husband is always the number-one suspect. But what do you do when that husband is also your client?

Someone pushed Emma Egger off a five-story balcony. Her husband had motive and opportunity. But he is the one who will take Eulalie off the case if she investigates too closely.

As she walks a delicate line between doing her job and keeping her client happy, Eulalie realizes there is someone out there who will do anything to stop her from getting too close to the truth.

I was Hooked after reading the first in the series, Hacked. Energetic and compelling story as Eulalie Park uses her smarts and gymnastic ability to reach parts others cannot. Set in an Indian Ocean island, with a varied cast of characters.

I read this book as book 3. The next book in a series you started for the PopSugar Reading Challenge. I reviewed the first in the series as my book published in 2018, and was really glad that both have been published this year so far.

Just like with Hacked, the first in the series, this book was easy to read, engaging and entertaining. As cozy mysteries, both books are wonderfully accessible and gentle to read.

That does not mean, however, that this books is simple in construct or crime. There is still the sense of mystery and wanting to work out who did what to whom and why. Snyckers keeps you going; there are enough exciting scenes between the friendships and family politics (all filled with love and familiarity) to whizz the story along.

By the end of the book I felt like I had been on a wonderful adventure with people I knew and liked.

I will certainly keep reading each book as it comes out as I am more and more interested in the characters and their relationships, but also like the way the crimes are solved. Perfect cozy mystery really.

These stories have a sweet fairytale quality, with a wonderful female heroine who overcomes all kinds of prejudice to shine in her life and work. Great travel reading for me as I criss-cross snowy Canada.

This particular story also challenges patriarchy - albeit in a relatively understated way. At least it names what is going on in a family business that reserves all the power and opportunities for the male line. What is sad is now much this toxic environment actually manifests amongst the women who are dispossessed by the patriarchy.

I gave the first book in this series 5 stars, but now I wish I hadn't because this one was even better! Snyckers has created an unusual cast of characters - with a slightly psychic PI and a Chief of Police with Aspergers - but at the same time delivers a totally satisfying whodunit. SA writing at its best.

I love this series so much. It is so cosy and addictive and Eulalie makes for a great, spunky lead.

Gripping

A gripping read. I fancy the pace of the series, not too much action, just good, old-fashioned detective work. And I like that she works well with the police.
