Less a biography than a meditation on Whitman's most productive period. I especially appreciated the sensitive way that Zweig writes about Whitman's homosexuality and its relationship to his poetic development. I enjoyed the book with the glaring exception of the final paragraph which just really goes off in a wild direction any editor should know isn't the note any book wants to end on.
