Necromancer: A Tale of the Last City

Rate this book
After the death of the Gods, his best friend (and horrible butler), and the love of his life, Kel Lothless has retreated into himself. Taking odd jobs here and there pays the bills but it isn’t enough to fill the void within him after such tremendous loss. However, now the God of Death has called upon him once again and with the aid of Shalinde the zombie necromancer priestess of death who has taken up residence with him Kel is put back into a life and death situation.

With the balance of power tipping precariously towards chaos in Horizon, Kel Lothless must use all of his wits and power to find the new God of War, and stop Horizon from being destroyed by raw power. What Kel doesn’t know, is that the new God of War will test him in ways he never thought possible, and force him to come face to face with his own demons.

This book is a delightful continuation of Kel Lothless' story. It feels like the author put down his pen on the first book, went and grabbed a fresh coffee, then sat back down and started writing.

The story picks up a year or so later, with Kel dealing with the losses of the first book. We have an almost new character (who was in the first book but we didn’t learn a lot about her) in this story, Shalinde who is a zombie priestess of death. She fits right in, and fills in the space for whom Kel can continue his comedic dialogue.

“I have an elaborate three part plan,” I announced.

“A three part plan?” she asked.

“No, an elaborate three part plan,” I replied.

“And your elaborate three part plan begins with you sitting at the table drinking your coffee?” she asked.

“Yes, that is the elaborate first part of my elaborate three part plan.” (68)

She has a wonderful personality that we get to know, and I *think* I’ve put the puzzle together about her, but that’s part of the fun.

It’s up to Kel to save the day again, and while this story does flow a little better to get to the climax, it doesn’t seem as exciting as the first story in that regard. That being said, as a stand alone adventure this one is a great read. I would recommend reading the first book just so you know the background of the characters and Kel’s motivation; reading it as a stand alone would open too many questions. And I assume since the ending of this book has Kel and his crew about to go on another quest, the same will be said for the next book.

The really good news about this novel over the first one is the editing issues are greatly reduced. There’s still a couple of issues here and there, but this can be expected from an independent author. I will say that I hope Sarachman becomes a bit more famous so he can afford a better layout artist. Some of the random tabbing and margin issues made me twitch.

All in all, another great read. I can’t wait for book three.
