The Beckett Cypher collection of novels begins with The Case – Book 1,a contemporary criminal investigation, layered with romance, love, intrigue, friendship, family, corruption, and choices. The Case begins when undercover operative Shane Beckett is contracted by the Carson City Sheriff to investigate a crime family syndicate, and the syndicate’s links to drug cartels and politicians.

Shane is quickly swept up in two murders, as he falls deeply in love with the woman of his dreams, in the middle of the investigation. But just as he comes to realize that The Case is far more complex than he could have imagined, and he himself becomes a target for assassination, he also learns his new love and her family are far more than they first appeared. As he enters the depths of the underworld, Shane becomes entangled with people responsible for his parents’ murders, an unknown assassin, warring drug cartels, and a shadow government.

Shane must quickly make complex and difficult choices as The Case drags in additional people, more danger, building intrigue, and a passionate love he had never known possible. He struggles to maintain control of The Case and his life, as he identifies a barrage of people and motives. Shane finally discovers he can’t begin to unravel these mysteries until he finds the key that will unlock the past – The Beckett Cypher.

The overall storyline of this book good, but it was more about romance and multiple love stories than it was about investigation and intrigue.

Well done Dan!

Really hard to put down! I was wondering when and where the brother would come into the story so I had a hunch it was him secretly helping his brother. Can't wait for the next book!

A secret criminal organization that has been around for decades is the target of a group of people who have lost a lot because of this organization.

I enjoyed this book quite a bit. It gave a lot of detail about the characters and their connection to each other be it friend or foe. Plenty of surprises and twists. The book got away from the case towards the end and focused more on personal relationships which I didn't like so much. It seemed like it was done to stretch the story to the next book imo. Overall a really good read and I'm looking forward to the next book. I would definitely recommend this book to someone who like crime thrillers.

This is not a complete story , just an elaborate setup for the next book ,( & the next & the next ...). Ridiculously long descriptions of food & drinks , it's fancy coffee cfs , & even worse sex scenes. I think the author should try writing cookbooks , maybe. Overly complicated " heist" type story without the payoff. At one point one of the females in the story , tall, slim, model beautiful actually wished her CD breasts were a size smaller ! Save yourself.

The case

Mr. Cunningham I have to agree with the negative reviews on this book. I had to skip pages just to get back to the plot. Too much description on what they ate, love scenes etc. You claim you want to stimulate our imagination but there was too much unnecessary people, words that drew you away from the story. I really believe you can eventually be a good writer. Could not make myself read the second book. Best of luck.

A must read

I originally started with book #2, but quickly stopped & purchased #1 so I could understand who all the characters were. I'm glad I did. Mr. Cunningham is an excellent writer who writes like a pro. This book is one that you cannot put down & when you do, you find yourself not only thinking about the story, but barely biding your time until you can get back into it.

Why I gave 4 stars

Actually I probably should have given it five stars because I really enjoyed the book . I just wasn't ready for it to end the way it did, but it was a very good read I highly recommend it

Read over half of it, couldn’t handle any more, like a fantasy love story way to much every one loved everyone, other than all that the story would of been good, but this books not for me. Get me back to Jack Reacher.

Too much talk...

And not enough action especially in the first half of the book.
Also, the writer needs to learn the difference between subjective vs. objective use of "I".
However, enough good to keep me interested to the end and to read the next book.
