Rich Historical Detail Will Sweep You Away to 12th Century Scotland!

Set in Scotland, beginning in 1140, this is the story of Davina of Crailing and Domnall Fitz William. Domnall, the descendant of two kings, has been robbed of the lands and title that should have been his. He lives to regain them. And he wants to be worthy of the girl he loves, Davina. As a child, she lost her family and her home to a murdering band of cutthroats and became the ward of King David. The king would use her in a marriage bargain to secure support. But the man the king proposes is one who Davina despises.

Davina loves Domnall but circumstances will tear them apart as each is forced to pursue another path. Both Davina and Domnall are worthy characters willing to sacrifice their own plans and dreams for the good of others. Lots of action and suspense will keep you turning pages.

A well-told tale rich in history and historical detail, Valor is a welcome add to the short list of historical romances with actual history and written with an authentic feel for Scotland’s past.

I intend to read more by this author!

"Valor: Sons of Scotland" by Victoria Vane

My Thoughts...

I felt that this story "Valor" was a beautiful told story of 'Medieval Scotland' that features some very interesting characters that give the reader a good story that will keep your interest through the read. The story will give the reader quite a interesting fictional read that will feature "trials, triumphs and tragedies of some true life Highland heroes...Alexander Mac Malcolm, Malcolm AchAedh and Domnall Mac William." By the end of this excellent read the readers will find that these "men of ancient Moray who clung tightly to their Celtic heritage and played a significant role in the struggle for the destiny of Medieval Kingdom of Scotland." Now, I will stop here and only say if you like Medieval Scottish reads then you have come to the right place for "Valor" will give it to you.

The blood of kings runs in his veins and he might have to sacrifice much to regain what his family lost to other's power and greed. Domnall FitzWilliam was full of fury in the first book so I was thrilled to see him take center-stage in Valor.

Valor follows a parallel path to the first book Virtue so it could be read standalone. However, because it is a parallel book, I got much more out of it because I was already in possession of the knowledge of the events that were happening off scene dealing with Domnall's family and others and some details that were not teased out because there is an assumption the reader already knows them.

So, yes, Valor is Domnall's story along with Davina. They meet as children when she has just lost everyone in her life and he makes her a promise. Fate tears them apart as men of power manipulate their lives like pawns. Over the years, they meet a few more times with that early promise blooming into something deeper though they are kept apart. Life has been rough on both of them.

Domnall is caught between two worlds. He's a Scot, but his own father renounces his own heritage to become Norman and also gets his marriage annulled so he can marry into Norman aristocracy for power. The current Scottish king is wary of him because Domnall has a stronger claim to the throne than he with two kings as grandfathers. He must grow up hard and fast while still staying true to himself while men of power seek to make him a pawn or dead. As a man, he has the choice whether to submit, hide, or fight for his claim on Scotland while figuring out how to fulfill a long ago promise to his lady love.

Davina's life was full of sorrow and loss save for one bright spark- Domnall. And even then, he rescues her more than once, but he has no real way of ultimately saving her since she is always under the king or the prince's protection to be used for what she can bring them. She gives up hope for herself, but then learns she is now placed in a unique position to return Domnall's favor by secretly aiding him and his family.

The stark world of this time period and hardships that many endured while men of power vied for control of Scotland is well-portrayed. I felt the colorful pageantry of the medieval era as well as the various historical cultures- Scots, Normans, and even Norsemen- along with the religious elements of Celtic church, Roman church, and pagan made for wonderful setting.

In the last book, I was confused by all the players, but with this book, I remembered the connections and alliances so that I could appreciate what was going on better. There is some great intrigue and suspense, brutal action and breathtaking action with a few moments of quiet contemplation for the characters.

The romance is secondary though definitely a strong element. In fact, it does drive the actions of Domnall and Davina even if historical circumstances keep them from an easy romance and being together. For much of the story, the romance is bittersweet because they can't be together and must worry if a forced marriage will part them for good. I was rooting hard for them to finally get their chance.

And so, the Sons of Scotland series advances the situation for Domnall and Davina, Alexander and Sybilla, and so many others as they prepare for a war with Scotland as the prize and revenge against those who wronged them. This is great historical fiction and romance that anyone who loves Highlander and/or Medieval Romance should snack up first chance.

My thanks to the author for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

New to me author!!

This is my first book by Victoria Vane and the second in the Sons of Scotland series. It is easily a stand alone, though I do believe the first book may overlap in a spot or two.

I really enjoyed this book. I like how it started out with two ten year olds lost in their own ways in this Medieval world and slowly worked it's way up until they were fully grown adults. They love and HEA went through so many hardships until they were able to be together. I find myself gasping at the unfairness of it all. While Davina and Domnall annoyed me quite a few times, I had to remind myself of the time that they lived in different times and did the best they could with their circumstances.

I thought Victoria's writing was nicely descriptive and easy to read. After finishing Valor I immediately went back and bought Virtue and I am really looking forward to reading Vengeance later this year.

A sweeping saga that captures the essence of 1100's Scotland and the turmoil that challenged so many. Can you imagine your home being overtaken and everyone killed but you somehow escaped? Such was the terror of Davina of Crailing when she was a young child. Raiders came in killed everyone and Davina managed to escape and hide. Domnall Fitz William was travelling with his father and they came upon Crailing. Seeing everyone murdered and nothing left in the keep it appeared there was no survivors. But he found Davina and a bond was formed with them as children. Davina becomes a ward of the King and Domnall strives to find his place being the descendant of two kings but born a bastard. This is an amazing story of how two souls are separated for long periods of time but always seem to come back together. There is also a struggle for dominance as that was the way of life during this period of time. Domnall grows up striving to regain his lost lands and be in his rightful place due to his heritage. Victoria Vane is a master of taking the reader through history and making it become real. I fell in love with the characters and at different times did not want to turn the page for fear of what would happen! Skillfully plotted with all the twist and turns you are carried forward in the story. What I really enjoyed and which is hard to accomplish for an author, is that the characters in the first book "Virtue" where actually going through their story simultaneously. Although it did not spend a lot of time on Alex and Sybylla, it all pulled together nicely with the timeline. Prepare to be mesmerized and turning the page as fast as you can to get to the conclusion. I am still thinking about this story, just as I did the first book and know I will for awhile. To me that is a story that was well written and thought provoking and will find a place in my stack of to be read again books. Well done Victoria Vane! Now for the next tale in this amazing series!

I was a bit lost on the characters but when Sybilla and Alexander were mentioned, I realized that this is Domnall's history and some of the events happened simultaneously with that of the first book.

As usual, it's an enjoyable read, and it made me really wonder about Scotland's history. One thing is consistent through the years, and that is political intrigue and the royal court.

I will not attempt to summarise the story, as the blurb does it better than I ever could, because a lot happens in VALOR. VALOR is the second book in the Sons of Scotland series, a sweeping saga of valiant Scots determined to take back what is rightfully theirs and still manage to fall in love. VALOR works splendidly as a standalone, however those who have read VIRTUE, the previous instalment get to know what had happened to Sibylla and Alexander, as the stories for both novels take place concurrently.

Victoria Vane’s thorough and very impressive research provides a solid historical foundation to Domnall and Davina’s romance. Although I consider VALOR owes more to historical fiction than historical romance, the thread that binds the fabric of the narrative is the romance within the historical context. Domnall and Davina are truly star-crossed lovers, as they are kept apart for most of the novel, due to the turbulence that still prevailed in Scotland in the middle of the twelfth century. Those are not mere pebbles that Domnall and Davina encounter on the road to romance, they are veritable boulders.

Ms. Vane’s lush descriptions bring medieval Scotland to life, her prose is absolutely gorgeous, flawless and refined, and this linguist couldn’t be more delighted as Ms. Vane preserves the flavour of the language, as well as the terminology used at the time, and still keeps the dialogues flowing, lively and easy to read. VALOR has action, adventures, battles, and political machinations galore, plot twists that are sure to keep you on your toes, and some memorable defence tactics. Medieval Scotland actually makes the era we live in appear rather sedate and safe, but true love will always prevail.

I received this book from the authors for an honest review.

This is the 2nd story of the series. I loved the first book so when Victoria asked if I wanted an ARC of this book, I jumped!!!

This is the story of Domnall and Davina…the story goes from when they were 10-year olds through adulthood.

Domnall was the son of 2 kings and the rightful heir to the throne. His grandfather, The current King, annulled his parent’s marriage which leaves him untitled annnnnnd viewed as a BASTARD!! Gasp! He has made it his life long goal to avenge his rightful lands. Along the way to his father, he finds a slaughtered family who’s only remaining member is a young girl.

Davina is the daughter of a knight. Her entire family was murdered, and she was saved by Domnall. She finds herself living as a ward of the King but because she does have lands, the king can decide who she is to marry when she is old enough.

Domnall and Davina have some lessons to learn about trust, the court and family. Their love story is so very enthralling. There is mystery and deceit along the way for the couple

The king’s grandson Domnall Fitz William is robbed of his rightful inheritance when his grandfather the King has his parent’s marriage annulled. When Domnall is ten years old he’s taken to live with his father who disowned, but he desperately spends time seeking his father’s approval. On their journey to his father’s holding they discover a heinous crime has happened at Crailing and the only survivor is the knight’s daughter, Davina of Crailing.
She lost everything she loved, her father, brother and her home. Davina the titled young lady with land becomes the ward of the King to marry off as he see fit when she becomes of age. It’s in the Kings court where both Domnall and Davina discover that every word and action can cost someone their life or freedom.
Davina and Domnall lives are intricately entangled in this story of young love. They are separated for long periods of time, but they always seem to come back together and find each other. The plots in this story are complex and fast paced filled with intrigue, murder and mayhem as these two wounded souls discover a way to love one another and find their HEA!!! This is my honest opinions after I voluntarily read a copy of this book that was provided to me with no requirements for a review.

Valor tells the stories of Domnall Mac Williams of Kilmuir and Davina of Crailing. I did not read the first book in this series but this book holds its own as a stand-alone. I found the writing to be rich and easy to read. While this book is the standard story of this genre I liked the twists and turns Victoria Vane skillfully used in her storytelling. It was interesting enough to keep my mind off the traffic we negotiated on a long car trip and I was able to read it in a day. I felt the characters were well developed and enjoyed how the back stories to them were written.I liked the balance she used as she moved through the story. I was a bit disappointed at how the story was ended. It seems rushed as if she wanted to write on but had to end it and add an epilogue. All in all I recommend this book. It will be a nice book to read as you sit on the beach or as a mind escape to a time before filled with intrigue and plotting. I will probably buy the first book in the series now as those characters are a part of this book and I would like to learn more about their story. I also look forward to the next book in this series. I was sent an advanced copy of this book to read and review. All opinions are my own and not influenced by receiving an ARC.

This is book two in The Son's of Scotland Series and for me, so far, is the most intense. This story gives us the inside information of Domnall Fitz William's past. He is descendant of two kings but left to be viewed as a bastard. There is definitely a turbulent history that goes along side his journey at every turn. Since he was a child he vowed to reclaim his mother's family land. Along his life journey has been one constant, Davina of Crailing. She has inbedded herself in his life since he found her as a child. Domnall will have to make tough decisions and figure out what is important.

Davina is the daughter of a knight who has suffered since one horrible day in her childhood when she loses everything. A boy helps her and he is the only one she trusts. She becomes a ward off the King. Her life is far from what she thought it would be.

There is so much history, corruption and intrigue surrounding these two. Can love possibly bloom and continue to be cultivated in this environment?

I look forward to the conclusion of this entire intrigue in book three. Hopefully, it will come out soon.

This story begins with two children, Davina and Domnall, who meet as both are separated from their families forever, each from a different set of circumstances. She is the daughter of a respected knight, he the bastard son of an heir to a throne. As a result of being thrown together, they form a bond of friendship that grows through several years into an intense love for each other. Set against the background of the battle for that throne in medieval Scotland, this tale is filled with intrigue, murder, action, and romance. It is the second book in this series and it is a page turner!
These two young lovers face what seems an insurmountable series of events that serve to keep them apart and their love continues to survive. The plot itself is fascinating for historical romance fans, and the characters are interesting and colorful. I read it wondering about the ‘stories’ of several of them, which I hope are forthcoming.
I recommend this book to readers who enjoy historical romance with intrigue and action with their hea. I read this as an arc which affected my review in no way at all.

So Much History! Valor by Victoria Vane is the 2nd book in The Sons of Scotland series. There is so much history in this book that I can’t even imagine the research that went in to it. The descriptions are so detailed and you cannot help but to picture them in your mind. This is a really sad story but I feel that is was the true way of life back in 1140 A. D. This story has deceit, battles, enemies, kindness, devotion, abduction, murder, evil, good, knights, kings, princes, princesses, Normans, Highlanders, family love, dungeons, prisoners, training, hunting, injustice, separation, bastards, madness, trial by wager, treason, love and so much more. If you like history as much as I do than this book is for you.
Travel back to 1140 A. D. Scotland with Domnall Mac Williams of Kilmuir and Davina of Crailing.

This is the second book in the series. While you could read either book on its own, you need to read this one after the other when reading both.
Our story starts when our characters are only children and covers many traumatic years for both of them. Our hero has the blood of kings running through his veins but has been pushed aside by politics. Being in close contact with a the royal family is not an easy life. Every word and action can cost someone their life or freedom. How can two young people go against the wishes of the most powerful in the land?
An intriguing adventure.

The only survivor of a devastating attack on her family, Davina becomes a Ward of the Court. Domnall, having rescued Davina as a child, falls in love and vows to marry her and her only. As they mature into adults, their life is once again manipulated by those with an evil agenda. Davina and Domnall are torn apart and believe that they will never see each other again. But, fate has a different agenda. The magic is the way in which it occurs. A very well written book for this series.

This second book in the Sons of Scotland series continues the broad sweep of Scottish history. Following the story of Domnall, a potential heir to the throne of Scotland and the woman he met as a child, Davina. Whether together or apart, their love story transcends all the danger and strife they must overcome to be together.
More of an historical tale than a romance, Victoria Vane does an amazing job of providing an inside look at the many factions scheming for the crown. While we do not know who will eventually win the throne yet it gives the reader something to look forward to in a future book.

Great story

Victoria
Vane writes another great story! I thought this was a sequel to her first book. It is but not really but kinda.
This story started when Davina was nine and Domnal was ten.
Events happen some good, some bad and one really bad.
Telling the story does not do justice to how Victoria Vane has written this story. It needs to be read!!

An enduring love

From the age of ten when Davina was rescued, there has been a special bond with Domnal. Through many years and few times together their love endures during conflict between Scotts and Norman. A lot of political history with romance.

Davina & Domnall’s story is filled with betrayal, hopes, dreams, the frailty of the human spirit, and reality. We are not always given an easy life but learning to make the most of what we have been given, and looking for the positives that encourage contentment, are important life lessons. These characters present strength even when they feel inadequacies, the have the depth to contemplate their issues and come up with resolutions to work to their advantage. This is an excellently written story and a plot filled with realistic details, not only in the societal demands of the time, but historical details which help place you in that time period as an observer, to feel the frustrations, fear, customs and repercussions of actions. Well thought out and planned strategies vs rash actions fueled by anger. Love perseveres but definitely takes its lumps along the way.

After reading the first book in the Sons of Scotland series, Virtue, I very much looked forward to this second book and Victoria Vane did not disappoint! My heart ached for what Davina and Domnall had to go through before their HEA and their story kept my interest the whole way through. The research that went into this book is very obvious and not only do you get a love story, you also learn so much about the political upheaval that went on in those times. Ms. Vane deserves high praises for this book!!

Valor by Victoria Vane is medieval romance. This book does have a lot of ancestry mentions in it, which may be confusing for some people. Ms. Vane has delivered a book that is well-written. I liked the characters and seeing how they develop as time passes. Davina is orphaned and her home burned when Domnall discovers her hiding. Domnall was declared a bastard when the king ruled his parents marriage null and his father disowned him. Domnall and Davina's story stretches over many years and is loaded with drama, angst, humor, sex, action and suspense. I enjoyed reading Valor and look forward to reading more from Victoria Vane in the future. Valor is book 2 of the Sons of Scotland Series but can be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.

Confusing

I read first book and realized to really get to the end I would have to buy the second one. They are not free standing. by the time I was halve through the second one, there were so many characters involved, I had to go back and forth on various occasions which takes away from the enjoyment. I expected more. Camelia
