Jim Cartwright is commander of Cartwright’s Cavaliers, one of Earth’s storied Four Horsemen mercenary companies. He’s not your typical merc commander. He’s overweight and, at 20 years old, he’s the youngest person to ever take the reins. After a series of successful contracts, though, Jim’s brought the Cavaliers back from the brink of financial ruin.
Having discovered a functioning Raknar—a 20,000-year-old, 100-foot-tall war machine left from another era—Jim was able to use it to win a decisive battle. But now Jim wants more. Lots more.
He knows there must be more Raknar out in the galaxy, and he’s determined to find them. Follow along with Jim and his partner, Splunk, a member of the enigmatic race known as Fae, as they search the galaxy for more Raknar. Before it’s too late.
I obtained this story through the Kindle Unlimited program. I was highly gratified to discover it is a short read, because that is what I was looking for.
The artwork is radically different from the other entries in the 4HU series. This cover is, for lack of a better word, almost a cartoon, compared to the realism of the other books. The artist is Mika Gruszka. Kind of a nice way to set-off this sub-set from the others, I think,
"So, sport, how did you wind up owning that planetoid, anyway?" That's the first question this story answers.
If all you want is pure space opera, you likely want a longer book. However, what makes this different is that it goes into the back story a bit more, and we get to see Jim and Splunk work out their relationship, as well as see Jim in the midst of his transition from Fat Boy to Fighter/ Leader of Fighters. And that's the more important question.
Good action, good character development, lots of fun, and a quick read
This is a first chapter in an on-going story Mark is writing primarily for his Patreon patrons. It's set after Cartwright's Cavaliers, and presumably before Winged Hussars (or at least, A Firey Sunset)
Jim buys an old base near Karma station. It's been there for over 2000 years, but it's been disused for a long time. He and Splunk explore the base in his CASPer, surviving several booby traps along the way. He eventually makes it into the Central control area to be confronted by a robot that is armed to the teeth, and wanting to destroy him. Making a run for it, he manages to get as far as the main hangar space, and tells his ship to open fire, venting the atmosphere, and the robot with it. It turns out the base was originally built for Raknars, and Jim has plans...

Another great story by Mark. We get see Jim Cartwright rising to the occasion again. He deals with the unexpected much better than many. Not what is expected from the fat kid. We also see jim starting to shine a a commander, though he is still learning.
Read this story. Read Cartwright cavaliers. Read all of the four horseman books.
Good story. Finally, a story with a fat man as lead. There is nothing wrong with us, except more comes in (as calories) than what goes out. Don't wait, fat boys, it only gets harder to lose weight the older you get. Somewhere I read, I wish more things were as easy as getting fat was.
Another good tale from the Four Horsemen Universe! However it's too short and the cover makes it look like a children's book! I would have missed this if I wasn't following the author otherwise keep em coming!
Way to short for its price, coul be a $ to € conversion thing with our local taxes. Way to short to satisfy my need for full blown books! Fun read, as the 5 stars show ;-)
I enjoyed this story very much. It was a bit short for me. Was just getting not the story when it ended. Am glad there are more of Jim’s story coming. Will start #2 now.
