I know now why my mother raved about this book and why she loved to re-read it. Ms Yoder Ackerman takes us deeply into adventure in Africa, and we savor it with her (not consuming it, but savoring....). Disaster lurks at each moment, beginning with the price demanded by the ticket agent in the airport and continuing with the big adjustments required to marry and live the first year together with Robby, the reason for Ms Ackerman's flight to the other side of the world.

What helps Ms Ackerman at each moment is her honesty and determination: "I'll need the courage, strength and sense of humor (asked for by Anne Morrow Lindbergh as she approached marriage to Charles), but I do expect to be happy. And I WILL be happy."

I'm right there in each scene, whether it's a bar on the border, nearly hidden by tall grasses, or being feverish between crisp, cool sheets in a delicately floral bedroom. I'm entranced by how a breeze can be "indolent" and a plane can "gulp up a crowd." Lots of lively words to tuck into my memory album.

Best of all, this is my first cousin, and, even though she lives on the other side of the country from me, we are friends on Facebook, and I get to read Ms Ackerman's comments on the adventures she and Robby still have.
