David Delaney has been telling stories since he was a little kid. Of course, many of those early stories were told to get him out of whatever trouble he had gotten himself into. (But if his mom is reading this, he never lied – honest.)

As an adult, David continued telling stories, but a specialized kind of story called - The Television Promo (basically the TV show version of a movie trailer). If little kid David had known that grown up David would spend his days working on hit shows such as The Simpsons, 24 and Bones he would have totally spazzed out.

Now, David continues his joy of storytelling with the Paragon Society, a supernatural thriller series wherein battle mages and shapeshifters clash with people-eating-demon-women (among other nasties) over the fate of the Human race.

Gypsy Witch
A Paragon Society Novel, Book 2
By: David Delaney
Narrated by: Matt Godfrey
This story has many things going on at the same time. The story of Lucy training Orson. A witch that agrees to make a dark blood sacrifice spell for a guy for a love spell for him. Things go terribly wrong! The two stories come together and even more action happens then! This is funny, witty, crazy, suspenseful, and unpredictable!
The narration was great! He made the dialogue, especially when Orson talks to his beast.

Wow... where to start? Like I said in my review of the first book the author is keen to take from comics, television and movies as far as tropes are concerned. If his profile on Amazon is to be believed he spends his day job writing television promos which would explain why his books feel like watching something on the CW.

Out of curiosity (and after I started to feel like this was a television show and not a book) I decided to read other reviews of this book on Goodreads and low and behold another reviewer pointed out that this was an obvious re-tread of a Buffy the Vampire episode. That reviewer was much more generous than I'm going to be. I googled said episode to find out what that reviewer was talking about, and surprise surprise the 1998 Buffy the Vampire Slayer episode of "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered" sounds amazingly identical to this story and that would explain why this book felt like I was watching a television show, instead of, you know, a book. So let's recap. The first book felt like a comic book origin story without the comics and this book feels like a television episode without the television.

The problem I'm having with these stories is that I don't really care about any of the characters. Orson is whiny half the time, or being "bold" the other half. For an eighteen year old he's got the sex drive of a 10 year-old even when he's holding his hot naked girlfriend close.

The idea that Orson was really smart before he "changed" has been completely dropped by the wayside, but somehow he can "hack" social media accounts in several hours to track someone, which is amusing if you consider how quickly Twitter trolls can track and identify somebody without ever needing to "hack" anyone's page. This implies the author wants to sound like a hip computer savvy 18 year-old but doesn't quite grasp the technical realities open to anyone with explicit knowledge of the capabilities of social media accounts.

Lucy's character could be interesting, but the author spent too little time developing her and what he did write caused her character to suffer from the same set of personality disorders Orson suffers from. When I got to the end of the story, I honestly didn't care about Lucy. Why should I, I barely know anything about her and that's how "she likes it." Right? I guess that's as good an excuse as any to not develop a character in your series. But the epilogue hints that we'll get to learn more about her! But who really cares? I don't want to have to wait for another book for a character to evolve in any regard. If that's the hook that's supposed to make me come back for more, it sucks.

The story also focused way too heavily on "Jimmy" the creepy (but not unattractive) nerd who causes all the problems in the first place. You'd think this book was about Jimmy and not the Paragon Society with how much of the story Jimmy takes up. What's funny is I actually think Jimmy was probably the best written character in this book which is sad considering that Orson is supposedly the main character. If the author had spent half as much time on Orson and Lucy as he had with Jimmy this book might not have felt so lop-sided.

The editing of this book is also very bad. The author admits on his Facebook page that he had a terrible editor for this book and has rectified the situation for further reprints and upcoming books, but no editor is going to sit David down and tell him he needs to read more books and watch less TV.

All in all, I didn't see any growth from the first book to the second. The writing style is fluff (read as not dense) and details were practically non-existent when needed and gratuitous when they weren't. Almost everything is left for you to imagine, which can be a good thing unless every girl is described as HOT and every guy is attractive (even nerdy Jimmy) it really just leaves you wading through a world of pretty people. I think out of everyone in the story only two people get described as less than attractive, one was a bad guy (shocker, right?) and the other stank and was derided as a peon.

This story was okay, but I honestly wasn't very impressed. I did finish reading it so it has that going for it. Needless to say, I doubt very much I will keep up with this series unless someone gives me the next book or I find out that the next book doesn't read like a television script. Not holding my breath for the latter.

I couldn't rate this one star because I finished it. This was such a huge drop from the first book. While the first book did have problems, it wasn't nearly as bad as this one. I am now going to commence my ranting review.

I thought there was some good things in the first book so I assumed the second book would build off the first book right? Nope. I was expecting to read more about the Ollphiest. More about what his powers are, how he is able to do the things he is able to do, and his reason for being. That didn't happen. Whatever we learned in the first book is as far as it went. There was nothing new about Orson's powers. The next thing I was expecting was to hear about Orson's mission to weed out the Cabal in the society. That didn't happen either. What about the relationship between Orson and Elise's father? Nope, nothing. There had to be something about Tommy and Kyle then right? They tried to kill him in the first book and I just know that they are planning something. Again, nope. Except for having Orson as a character in the book, this story had nothing to do with what happened in the first book. I can't even say this is Orson's story. The majority of the book was told from Jimmy's point of view. This must mean that Jimmy is some important figure in the supernatural world then right? Nope. Jimmy is a nobody.

It has been a month since Elise has left town and Orson is training with Lucy and Wyatt. Despite being able to kick everyone's ass in the first book, during training he keeps getting his ass handed to him. Lisa takes Orson on a mission to recruit a possible magic user at Stanford University, where some weird magical disturbances have been occuring. How does Jimmy fit in? He is a smart socially awkward sophmore who can't get a date. His friend takes him to a gypsy witch and he asks for a love spell. The spell is only supposed to affect one person, except something goes wrong and it affects every woman except the one that he wants. I read another review that compared this story to an episode of buffy the vampire slayer where all the women fall for Xander after the spell goes wrong. That reviewer was right. This story was exactly the same.

The list of things I found wrong with this book is long:

Pop culture references: Orson is 18 years old, yet he makes references to buffy the vampire slayer, star wars and friends. For friends and buffy, he would have been 5 years old when those shows went off the air. Those references don't make any sense for an 18 year old kid in 2018.

Jimmy's narration - First I hated him as a character. I don't know why it was important to hear his point of view. He was whiny, egotistical and just not very interesting. I also couldn't tell whose point of view his story was told from. It sounded like first person but every sentence started with his name. Jimmy thought this and Jimmy felt that. It was really weird. Was he using the third person when describing himself in the first person? Sort of felt like that Seinfeld episode where the guy spoke about himself in the third person. That guy's name was Jimmy too!

Lucy - Part of the reason I liked the first book was the interaction between Orson and Elise or Orson with his aunt, or Orson with Elise's parents. Pretty much Orson's only interactions in this book is with Lucy and their interactions were lacking. Lucy is not a very well developed character. Whenever Orson tries to ask her questions she has a fit about how she doesn't like to talk about her past. It is very hard to like a character that refuses to tell you anything about them.

Elise - She was hardly in this story

The society's secret - Orson was in trouble in the first book because a youtube video showed up which may have endangered the secret of magic. It was a huge deal. Then in this book, they have at least 3 massive battles in the open

Orson- He went from an 5'10 average looking, average fit guy in the first book to a massive 6'5 or greater massive man that could give the rock a run for his money. It has only been a month since everything has happened. I thought there should have been more made out of his new body and how he was dealing with it. It was mentioned a couple of times but I thought there was a big wasted opportunity to explore this more.

Overall a huge disappointment. I will not be continuing the series.

Sometimes when I am struggling with a book, I come onto Goodreads to look through reviews to see if other people are having the same issues that I am, or if it's just me. That happened to me at the 25% mark of this book and incidentally, it's where I decided to part ways with this series.

I really enjoyed the first one despite the breakneck pace because it felt like the author was doing his best to set up the world, the overarching story, and the stakes. I, therefore, picked up this one excited to follow on with that and I just never felt like I was getting it. It almost felt like it had taken a step back, devolving Orson's character progression so that they could build him up again. Then there was another storyline that involved an unhealthy, obsessive, stalker-like character and love potions and I asked myself, what the hell am I reading?

By far the biggest strength of the first book was Orson's relationships with Elise, her parents, his auntie, and his friends. Those relationships added an element of fun and depth to the story that kept me smiling throughout the novel and helped ground the narrative. Those relationships are missing here and that's a shame.

I, therefore, came here on Goodreads and soon found out that this is just how this book goes. Looking ahead to the synopsis and book reviews of other novels in this series, I came to the realisation that I'm going to bow out of this series early. It feels to me like it isn't going to follow through with the promises made in the first book, or if it does, it's going to do that in a format and pacing style that doesn't gel with me as a reader.

Another thing it does is it switches between first and third-person for different characters, and that is a writing format that has always annoyed me. I hold the belief that the point of a first-person story is to put you into a single character's head and to tell the story through their eyes. Therefore, switching to another character in third-person pulls you out of the story, and that's never a good thing.

As a stand-alone book, it's 3-stars because I don't think the story was all that solid and it couldn't keep me interested until the end of the novel. As the second book in a series, it loses another star because it felt like a step backwards.

First one was good but...

Spoilers:
Barely any Elyse in the book, a billion chapters of Jimmy who somehow managed to be both boring and crazy, this book just wasn't as interesting as the first one. I really like the world, but there wasn't much progression in this book and I didn't care about any of the chapters from Jimmy's perspective. Lucy is fun, but underutilized in my opinion.

Couldn’t figure out why this book felt familiar… then it hit me … 1998 Buffy the Vampire Slayer episode of
"Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered" is identical to this story. plagiarism?????

This series came up free on my kindle app, so despite the appalling editing (that even as someone who is hugely dyslexic can pick up), the one dimensional characters and the lack of any description except to say the female characters are “hot” … I’m going to read the rest of the series out of morbid curiosity to see how bad it can get.

This book series is definitely going downhill!

For something that started as an excellent series it quickly spiraled downward. The first book started off excellent but had a serious down ending. In this book the main character becomes more of a sideline to the story than actually doing anything meaningful to advance the characters story. In fact the true main character of this story was really the villain because it spent more time dealing with the villains motivations and actions then with what should’ve been the main character. The battle mage was so rude and belligerent she should’ve been shot in the head I was actually hoping that would happen by the end of the story. Well I have tried with two books but the storyline is spiraling into stupidity so I’m giving up on this book series. Maybe the author would do something better and maybe I’ll look at his other stuff but the storyline is a dead end to me.

There is a character that is a depiction of a complete and utter piece of filth. Garbage in every way as a person. And this author wanted you to spend at least a third of this book with it. I get that maybe some people like spending time getting to know horrible people. I cant begin to understand why. But still I understand.. And that is why I am not swearing at the author. Anywhere but in my head anyway...

This one was

Not as good as the first. Our MC was portrayed as being some powerful being and then became somewhat of an idiot in this book. I found his fight scenes more than a little frustrating and ended up skimming past them as his behaviour was just not believable. The author broke the rules of the world she created by being inconsistent with Orsen.

Good paragon Society second installment

I am enjoying this series i stumbled upon and how it continues to integrate the characters we met in Orson’s origin story. This story follows Orson as he continues his Society training with Lucy and Wyatt. The Society leaders inform Lucy of reports of abnormal magical use in the Stanford university area and Orson finally gets the opportunity to go with Lucy on what should be a normal recruitment run. ...only when are things ever normal when Orson the Ollphiest is involved?! =) The team stumbles upon many events along the way while searching for the magic user causing the abnormalities while also dealing with the fallout of some college students playing with dangerous magic.

The addition of several new characters of Dahlia, Tinkerbelle the Gypsy Witch, James and Maddie was well developed in that you got to know enough of each of the respective characters for them to be believable working parts of this story while not being too overwhelmed with the introduction of so many new people. As with the last book this one does have quite a few typos throughout, but the story is engaging enough to remain immersed in the action without the grammatical problems causing too much distraction.

This is the second book in the Paragon Society Novel .

This was a decent read although this one gave me a different feel than the last one I wasn't so into this book as much as the first book and frankly I don't know how I feel about Lucy . I'm not that sympathetic towards her I mean she's more likable in this one but she still can be a arrogant bitch and that was her downfall . Maybe after I read her back story I'll feel better about her character . As for this crazy Kid who has become power hungry I'm not feeling him either I get how he feels that he's not being taken seriously and that some people don't have to put as much effort as he does and it's not fair or that he doesn't get the credit that he deserves . But I have absolutely no sympathy for him because he'd rather take the easy way out not only is he delusional but he's willing to commit a major crime in order to get what he thinks he's entitled to he's gonna seriously mess himself up . And Orson really didn't have that big a role in this book which is not fine because I'm only reading this series because of him .

It's the second book in the series and we are most familiar with the characters. So let's jump into a part of the story. Here comes the warning for those who have yet to read the first novel.

Stop right here or you might get spoilers.

Orson is now in training to assist the Paragon Society in covering up paranormal happenings such as those caused by him. The second book is not far from the first timewise. Orson, Lucy, and Wyatt are now training together and becoming a team. In the beginning, Orson just could not see working with others. But now Lucy has won him over. Lucy is a powerful mage and helps to bring out the mean in the Ollpheist. Wyatt who has one incredible power is proving to be quite a teammate as well.
Its when Lucy proposes to go out for a recruiting run that she jinxes the whole thing by saying "recruiting runs are easy". Well, that's all it took. Now the team is in deep trouble and we get to see Trolls, Ogres, and Witches. I tell you its a fun read.

Totally Freaking Amazing🙌

I feel so blessed to have found this Author and his amazing stories! I love the characters, Orson, of course is funny and his inner dialogue with The Ollphiest is hysterical. I really need to sign up for the Author's newsletter though because it was only due to my searching my favorite Authors from time to time to see if they've released a new book that I found this one! If you are looking for a book that will grip you at the beginning, hold you throughout and leave you laughing and totally immersed in a different world, then this entertaining series is for you! You will NOT be disappointed in this selection at all, I am in love with this series and can't wait to continue the journey👏

Much like the last book it's good for a distracting bit of UF.
Narration and sound mixing are both done well.

This story picks up with Orson training with Lucy and Wyatt; Orson is still a stereotypical pigheaded dude but also overwhelmed by main character powerboosts.

This time Lucy and Orson are sent on a mission; we also frequently get another perspective of a non paragon who is introduced to a magic dabbler via his lab partner.... I don't want to say anything to spoil it but (inserting line breaks for a minor spoiler to soemthing that happens in first few chapters)

Part of what kicks off a lot of the shenanigans is when someone who's on the nerdy dejected insecure side with delusions of grandeur has a love spell go nuclear.

Good addition to this series, but I wonder what happens next

I liked that Orson was able to get things done, due to his natural abilities as the Ollphiest, but wasn’t suddenly some kind of super capable spec ops ninja while still in training.

I do feel like there were a lot of unanswered questions at the end of this book. Was Janice connected with the Cabal? Was she just a red herring in the story for the Society to focus on? Was the timing of Jimmy’s spell really the catalyst for all of the portals? Who was the blood mage Orson and Elyse encountered? I just felt that a lot of things were misdirection in this story without anyone picking up on the fact.

W sumie mogę streścić książkę tak:
- więcej gołych i napalonych lasek
- więcej potworów i demonów
- więcej mordobicia
- więcej magii
A wszystko okraszone żartami nawiązującymi do Harrego Pottera, Super Hero i Star Wars.

Mayhem, witchy style!

The story was full on following a few set of characters simultaneously and their actions and decisions culminated in a massive mayhem in Stamford University. The magical society needs to cover it up after they deal with it all.
There are a ton of action, magic, evil wannabe witches and a ton of other supernatural beings.
It is supposed to be read as part of a series but I read as a stand alone because of a reading challenge 📚
Free audio book included in catalogue plus Audible + KU, the 2 don't sync.

And the fun read continues

It's a great read and the story is just as fun as the last time ,I like how you get to read the different points of views from the different characters and the way they get along and joke around even when all hell breaks loose, I ended up hating the Jimmy guy and if you read the story you'll understand why , give the book a read you'll love it ,great series and I can't wait to read the next book

A not so simple mission

Orson is still learning about his new abilities and the Paragon society but that is about to change when a simple recurring trip turns into something way more complex than expected. Written with plenty of comic and movie references, this story well appeal to all of us fantasy nerds as it tells the tale of both good and bad nerds while showing a good luck at the "it isn't my fault, I am a victim too" mentality that surrounds our society.

Bad Witch

I enjoyed this second book in this series. The characters are interesting but it would be nice to get more character building without waiting for everyone to have their own book. The story was fast paced and exciting. It kept me up too late on a work night! I look forward to the next book in the series.

Keep it up

Well I'm enjoying the series. I wasn't sure about Lucy at first but I like her and thought WTH when she got shot. Hopefully since the next book is titled Lucy that means she will live. Still I'm also waiting for Orson to control his beast and become the true powerhouse he should be

excellent. until the end. apparently women deriding, mocking, and abusing men until they snap is perfectly fine then the poor guy is vilified for essentially ignorantly buying a product whereas the creator of the product is not material... very much disappointed. the strung together causality at the end is very weak and not credible. basically an ice cream sundae with a turd on top.
