My Way chronicles the life and times of Indian Test cricketer M.L. Jaisimha. The late legend influenced generations of cricketers from Sunil Gavaskar to VVS Laxman and was a hero to many, such as Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella.
Apart from being South zone captain, Indian team Manager, National selector, TV commentator and newspaper columnist, Jaisimha was virtually brand ambassador of the Charminar Challenge series, the corporate world’s pioneering effort in cricket sponsorship following India’s triumph in the 1983 Prudential/World Cup.
The biography is built on anecdotes recounted by greats such as Gavaskar, Laxman, Mansur Ali Khan of Pataudi, Ajit Wadekar, B.S. Chandrasekhar, Salim Durrani, Budhi Kunderan, Abbas Ali Baig and others.
As Times of India’s Guest Editor during his recent Delhi visit, Nadella approved publication of a feature on Jaisimha. Content for Avijit Ghosh’s article was sourced from My Way
My way- the biography of M L Jaisimha by A Joseph Anthony and Jayanthi Jaisimha is biography which connects the reader immediately because the reader can identify himself with his lovely cricket story. Initially a sportsman has to join games from his early years. Jaisimha got the opportunity of learning cricket in the cricket filed in his bunglow. Later he played for his Mohalla named MCC and played the game up to college, State level. He got noticed by BCCI and was selected for England tour then dropped and called to replace injured B S Chandrashekhar at Australia. Later selected for West Indies tour. Important learning points for readers are struggle for player is get noticed then maintain form by delivering results in national level tournaments. If dropped, then he should take in sportsman spirit. Jaisimha got the opportunity to be selector of the Indian team. In this responsibility he succeeded by meticulously planning. Next he was deputed as Manager of Indian team visiting Ceylon. For this responsibility, he has said that it is quite difficult. The allowance provided by Government was spent on meeting the press in a conference. His personal love story, narrated by his wife Jayanthi is moving and touches the heart. It is a worth reading book. More team managers should scribe their experiences so that the Sports Ministry can prepare dos and donts for international sports tours. It is a must read for all.
M.L. Jaisimha, a cricketing genius, had a charming energy, lived by his rules and stayed positive till the end. He was before my time but this book is a great recount to introduce him to me.
