High Season by Jessica Whitman is a 2016 Forever Romance publication. I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

While sports and romance always seem to go well together, I have to admit I would never have thought of centering a romance novel around the sport of Polo. I know absolutely nothing about the sport, except it is played while riding a horse, and can be dangerous.

I have to admit my curiosity was peaked, and decided to do a quick internet search about Polo and Nacho Figueras, who is backing this romance series. Well, let me tell you, this guy is the very definition of handsome!! Whew!

But, how does his romance series fare?

Specially trained veterinarian, Georgia, gets a call from an old friend, begging her to visit him in Florida. Needing a brief change of scenery, Georgia accepts the invitation, but soon finds her skills are valuable among the elite Polo players and the ponies they ride. She is offered a job working with the horses, an experience of a lifetime, and she readily accepts. But, things are not as charming and glamorous as they appear on the surface, and Georgia’s attraction to Alejandro Del Campo has her behaving in ways she never would have imagined.

Alejandro Del Campo’s entire life revolves around Polo. It is his mistress, the most important thing in the world to him, except for his beautiful teenage daughter.

But, when Alejandro meets Georgia, he finds she commands his attention in ways no other woman ever has. He even offers her a job, but his strict policy about dating employees means the relationship must remain professional at all times.

Okay, so I am going to have to find a channel that televises Polo! I’ve never given this sport a lot of thought, but now I’m seriously interested in it. This book is like an ode to the sport, and the fondness for the game flows through it almost as much of a love story as is the romance.

Compared to other contemporary romance novels, this one is on par, nothing especially unique, except the featured sport and the setting. However, all the added details concerning the training and care of the ponies and about Polo as a sport made the story unique, and really held my interest.

There is a mild soap opera flavor to the story, with some backstabbing and maneuvering, but this only added a little more tension to the story, which it needed from time to time. But, the conflict between Georgia and Alejandro was a little bland, throughout much of the book, with Georgia experiencing more issues with the secondary characters, instead.

Georgia and Alejandro’s chemistry is touch and go, but I loved the timing because I enjoy a big buildup to the romance.

Alejandro is a complicated character in some ways, and I didn’t always understand his reasoning in some areas, but he is portrayed as a conflicted man, with a lot of complex issues on his mind, and I liked his humanity, which made him seem much more authentic than some romance heroes.

Georgia’s character didn’t quite have the same growth, and I wish she had been a little more assertive at times, instead of just giving up and accepting her loss. But, at least she isn’t a drama queen and the angst levels stayed in an acceptable range.

The ending was just a little abrupt and I would have liked a more passionate conclusion, perhaps more spoken declarations, but it was still a sweet, conclusion, and Alejandro’s gesture is pretty big, proving how far he has come and how far he is willing to go to prove his commitment to Georgia.

Overall, this first book sets a solid foundation for the series, and I am already feeling excited about book two!

Tierärztin Georgia kommt durch ihren guten Freund Billy nach Wellington/Florida. Hier trifft sie auf Alejandro, der der älteste Sohn des Del-Campo-Clans ist, einer sehr reichen und mächtigen Familie. Außerdem ist Alejandro Polospieler. Als es Georgia gelingt, bei einem wichtigen Polospiel eines der Pferde aus Alejandros Reitstall zu retten, wird Georgia befristet als Tierärztin für den Del-Campo-Clan eingestellt. Dem zweiten Tierarzt Gustavo, der bereits seit vielen Jahren für die Familie arbeitet, gefällt das überhaupt nicht. Auch anderen ist Georgia ein Dorn im Auge, aber Alejandro ist von der jungen Tierärztin sehr angetan. Zwischen den beiden knistert es von Anfang an, doch beide wollen eigentlich nur auf beruflicher Ebene miteinander zu tun haben...

Mein Leseeindruck:

Die ganze Geschichte basiert eigentlich auf einem nicht unbekannten Thema: armes Mädchen trifft reichen und gutaussehenden Mann, beide verlieben sich ineinander, kämpfen gegen ihre Gefühle, und am Ende gibt es natürlich trotzdem ein Happy End. Ich glaube, das ist nicht zu viel verraten, denn die Story ist schon reichlich vorhersehbar.

Das meine ich noch nicht einmal negativ, denn auch vorhersehbare Geschichten können sehr schön und mitreißend sein.

Bei dieser Story hat mir allerdings das gewisse Etwas gefehlt. Es plätscherte ein bisschen zu sehr vor sich hin. Ein paar überraschende Wendungen wären schön gewesen oder einfach ein bisschen mehr Gefühl. An Emotionen hat es mir hier nämlich leider gefehlt. Natürlich gibt es jede Menge Emotionen in der Geschichte, aber sie kamen bei mir nicht an. Ich habe nicht mit Georgia oder Alejandro mitfühlen können. Ich habe das "Knistern" zwischen ihnen nur gelesen, nicht gefühlt.

Trotzdem aber hatte das Buch auch etwas, das mich dennoch hat immer weiterlesen lassen. Den Gedanken, die Story abzubrechen, hatte ich trotz aller Oberflächlichkeit nicht.

Das Buch hat sich auch recht schnell und flüssig lesen lassen. Zum einen ist der Schreibstil recht einfach gehalten, zum anderen sind die Kapitel teilweise sehr kurz. Ich lese immer gerne von Kapitel zu Kapitel, und wenn die einzelnen Abschnitte so kurz wie hier sind, dann verleitet mich das immer dazu, doch noch ein Kapitel mehr zu lesen.

Obwohl dieser Auftakt der Reihe mich nicht begeistert hat, sondern eher ein gutes Durchschnittsbuch für mich ist, werde ich aber dennoch den nächsten Band lesen, in dem es um Alejandros Bruder Sebastian gehen wird.

Glamour – Treachery – Romance

This is what the reader is promised and that is exactly what I got, all wrapped in the deliciously enticing character of Alejandro Del Campo.

Clueless as she was about the rules, and impossible as polo was to follow, she found herself completely absorbed.

I couldn’t get enough of this poor girl meets hunky, rich, hot, famous polo player and falls in love.

Georgia is a Vet. She has grown up around horses and helps her dad out on his farm. She’s still hurting over her mother leaving them 15 years ago to pursue a more glamorous life.
Georgia’s best friend, Billy, asks her to come and ok his latest love. He tells her she could do with a short break from the farm and do some partying with the glamorous polo set in Wellington, Florida. Georgia reluctantly decides to go as Billy has always been there for her.

Georgia is introduced to Alejandro, one of Argentina’s top polo players, at a promotional event and immediately sparks fly but it’s not all plain sailing and there is plenty of misunderstanding and competition for Georgia to contend with. Alejandro is a broken man. He is trying to deal with the death of his wife, his brother’s indolence, his mother’s disapproval and his daughter’s detachment. Can a simple country vet mend his broken heart or is she out of her depth.

The story is told from both Alejandro’s and Georgia’s POV. I loved the stark differences between their lives but also the many parallels that came up throughout the story.
We get to see two sides of Georgia, the awkward and out of her depth country girl when she is around the polo set and the confident in charge vet when she is doing her job. Billy is a great addition as the flippant best friend bringing some fun moments and light heartedness to the story.

This story is about more than polo and sex. It’s about family and the deep struggles against loss and trying to hold together when you are hurting.

I challenge you to read this story and not fall in love with Alejandro!

This is a well-written romance novel which I thoroughly enjoyed. Loved the characters, loved the setting, loved the horses, loved the background of the world of professional polo playing. I give it a rating of 4.5★s.

I think the collaboration between Nacho Figueras and a professional writer, Jessica Whitman, works well. The story is a good one, albeit a conventional romance tale, but Whitman's writing skill elevates it above the usual.

Recently I watched a TV documentary which featured a couple of those gated communities in Florida, full of billionaires, huge mansions, designer clothes, diamond jewellery and plastic surgery. I think this book captures the glamour and the falseness of the lifestyle very well.

I really liked Georgia and Alejandro. Our hero and heroine are well-developed characters and most of the minor players are nicely drawn. It really helps to have the cast of characters well-written, as it allows the reader to invest more in the relationship which at the core of this sometimes steamy romance. Full credit to Whitman for pacing the escalating romance at a slow burn, which kept my attention throughout.

» MEINE MEINUNG «
Diese Geschichte ist mir lediglich durch eine Empfehlung via eMail aufgefallen; ich hatte diese Neuerscheinung tatsächlich gar nicht auf dem Schirm und war umso überraschter, dass sich der Klappentext so extrem gut und ganz nach meinem Geschmack anhört. Also habe ich prompt zugeschlagen, das Buch angefordert und es sogar bekommen; worüber ich mich sehr gefreut habe - vielen lieben Dank noch einmal an den Blanvalet-Verlag ♥ Es lag dann auch gar nicht lange hier, bevor ich es mir geschnappt und im herrlichsten Sonnenschein auf dem Balkon verschlungen habe. Doch war es wirklich so gut, wie ich es mir erhofft hatte? Das und vieles mehr erfahrt ihr jetzt:

Alles beginnt zu einem sehr geschickt gewählten Zeitpunkt; nämlich direkt mitten im Leben und im Alltag unserer Protagonistin Georgia. Das hatte den klaren Vorteil, dass ich sie als völlig normalen, bodenständigen Menschen kennen lernte und dann erst, mit ihr gemeinsam, in dieses luxuriöses Leben des Del Campo Clans hinein geworfen wurde. Ich liebe solch "ruhige" Einstiege, bin ein großer Fan davon, und was mich ebenfalls positiv stimmte war der Perspektiv-Wechsel, der schon sehr früh begonnen wird. Wir lernen nämlich nicht nur Georgia kennen, sondern auch Alejandro, der einen so unglaublich anderen Lebensstil pflegt als Georgia. Dieser Kontrast wird noch viel deutlicher, eben weil sie sich nicht kennen, weil sie an zwei völlig unterschiedlichen Orten leben. Ein großartiger Einstieg, der mich voll und ganz von sich überzeugte und meine Leselust und meine Neugier nochmal ordentlich antrieb.

Georgia ist eine unheimlich sympathische und vor allen Dingen glaubhafte Persönlichkeit. Sie wurde so bodenständig dargestellt, so authentisch, dass ich manchmal das Gefühl hatte, sie würde mich bei der Hand nehmen und durch die Geschichte führen. Sie verkörperte einfach alles, was ich mir von einer guten Protagonistin wünsche und ich hab sie schon während des Einstieg tief ins Herz geschlossen, sodass ich problemlos mit ihr mitfiebern, mitfühlen und mitleiden konnte. Bis zum Ende hin konnte ich so gut wie all ihre Entscheidungen und Gedankengäng voll und ganz nachvollziehen und habe rein gar nichts, wirklich nichts auszusetzen.
Alejandro hingegen war nicht ganz mein Fall, zumindest was das Optische anbelangt - aber das schiebe ich eindeutig auf meinen persönlichen Geschmack. Ich fand ihn einfach nicht wirklich attraktiv dargestellt, eher wie ein schmieriger, reicher Macho; doch gleichzeitig überzeugte er mich charakterlich wieder total. Denn obwohl manches total auf reichen Snob hindeutete, trug er sein Herz definitiv am rechten Fleck und ist sicher ein wunderbarer Wegbegleiter im echten Leben - denn genau dem scheint Alejandro entsprungen: dem Reallife. Auch er war sehr authentisch und glaubwürdig, sehr realistisch und eingehend beschrieben. Und auch meine Sympathie zu ihm wuchs mit jeder Seite. Ich bin froh, dass wir noch zueinander gefunden haben und ich ihn wirklich mochte am Schluss; das hätte dem Buch auch wesentlich schlechter bekommen können, wäre das nicht der Fall gewesen.
Alle anderen Figuren gefielen mir größtenteils ebenfalls gut.. Es gab einige, die ich einfach nicht ausstehen konnte; aber damit erfüllten sie auch voll und ganz ihren Zweck. Andere wiederum sind selbst jetzt noch immer präsent in meinen Gedächtnis - so zum Beispiel Valentina ♥

Der Stil war irgendwie anders - und auch wenn es jetzt blöd klingt in einer Rezension: ich kann nicht sagen, was den Stil so vom Rest abgehoben hat. Einerseits hatte ich doch das Gefühl, dass man manchmal gespürt hat, dass sich ein männlicher Autor hinter dem Buch verbirgt, gleichzeitig fand ich die emotionalen Passagen und die "heißen" (Erklärung, warum in Anführungszeichen, folgt im nächsten Abschnitt) Szenen wieder sehr eingehend und gefühlvoll dargestellt; was wiederum für eine Frau spricht. (womit ich jetzt nicht sagen will, dass Männer das nicht schreiben können). Jedenfalls habe ich einige Zeilen gebraucht, bis ich einen richtigen Lesefluss hatte, doch kaum war die Hürde überwunden, konnte ich mich stiltechnisch total fallen lassen. Die Beschreibungen waren sehr detaillreich, sehr bildhaft und somit zauberten sie ein klares Bild vor mein inneres Auge. Und die Tatsache, dass die Kapitel jeweils zwischen Alejandro's und Georgia's Sicht wechselten, spielten meinem positiven Eindruck zum Stil und zur Aufmachung nur noch mehr in die Karten.

Die Idee sowie der Story-Ablauf hätte ich absolut großartig gefunden, wenn denn der Klappentext nicht ganz anderes versprochen hätte. Dieses Buch war ein herrlich erfrischendes, klischeehaftes Drama vor einem tollen Setting. Das Leben der Schönen und Reichen wurde sehr authentisch dargestellt; ja genau so wie ich es mir immer vorstelle. Die Geschichte rund um Georgia und Alejandro war total schön in Szene gesetzt; nicht zu aufgesetzt, aber die Unterschiede der beiden Umfelder waren regelrecht greifbar und es war ein regelrechter Genuss, zu sehen, wie sie sich jeweils in das andere eingliederten und dabei nicht nur auf eine Hürde stießen, sondern gleich auf mehrere. Man spürte in jeder Zeile, wie sehr der Autor das Polospielen liebt und dass meine absoluten Lieblingstiere hier die Hauptrolle spielen, erfreute mich natürlich umso mehr. Laut Klappentext hätte ich aber eindeutig mehr Erotik erwartet. Schon allein der Satz "Doch Alejandro ist kein Mann, der ein Nein akzeptiert" sagt doch aus, dass es hier heiß hergehen wird und auch etwas derber werden könnte - nichts da. Ich habe dieses "heiß" oben ganz bewusst in Anführungszeichen gesetzt, weil ich einfach schon so viel anderes gelesen habe, was mich im Erotikbereich mehr begeistern konnte. In gewisser Weise war es einfach schmalzig und wenn es denn mal zu einer Sex-Szene kam, was nicht besonders oft der Fall war, war es eher ruhig, beinahe Blümchen-mäßig. Ich hoffe, ihr versteht, was ich damit ausdrücken will. Ansonsten waren die Twists gut gesetzt und gut durchdacht, gut in Szene gesetzt. Sie brachten Spannung in die Storyline, wenngleich manches auch wieder etwas vorhersehbar war; was ja aber nicht zwingend immer schlecht sein muss; ich fieberte jedenfalls trotzdem ordentlich mit.

Da ich beim letzten Abschnitt auch schon auf die Umsetzung eingegangen bin, wird dieser hier etwas kürzer. Ich denke, jedem sollte klar sein, dass man gerade im Bereich der Liebesgeschichten, New,- oder Young Adult und allem, was in diese Genre fällt, nicht mit temporeicher Spannung rechnen sollte. So war es hier natürlich auch; doch das schöne an diesen Büchern sind einfach die Emotionen, die bei passenden Charakteren auf den Leser übertragen werden; und dank Georgia war mir das hier problemlos möglich. So fieberte ich, wie gesagt, wirklich mit und fühlte mich mitgerissen und gefesselt. Das Ende bot sogar dann noch ein kleines Highlight, das sich durchaus als temporeich und actiongeladen beschreiben lässt.

» FAZIT «
Dieser erste Band der Wellington-Saga konnte mich leider nicht komplett von sich überzeugen, was aber schlicht und ergreifend an meiner Erwartungshaltung lag. Hätte ich von vorn herein gewusst, dass ich mich mehr auf ein Drama bzw. eine komplizierte Liebesgeschichte einlasse, würde meine Bewertung sicher ein wenig anders ausfallen. Jedenfalls traf ich trotz allem auf sehr liebenswerte Figuren, eine traumhafte Kulisse, jede Menge Infos rund um meine liebsten Tiere und auf einen tollen Schluss, der noch jede Menge Potential für Band 2 bietet; den ich übrigens unbedingt lesen muss.

Ich vergebe 3.5 von 5 möglichen Sternen und freue mich bereits jetzt sehr auf Band 2 dieser Trilogie. :) Lest es ruhig, geht aber bitte mit anderen Erwartungen dran, als ich - das wird euch einiges erleichtern.

Irgendwo pendelt sich dieses Buch bei 3,5 oder 4 Sternen ein. Absolut solide, nichts unglaublich krass fesselndes, aber dennoch für Liebhaber von Gossip Girl, Pferdesport und New Adult absolut eine Leseemofehlung. Ich könnte mir vorstellen dass die Geschichten der Geschwister in Teil 2 &3 der Trilogie mehr meinen Nerv treffen werden (:

Not a good romance story. But ok for learning about polo players and their horses.

Two Argentine brothers (Alejandro and Sebastian) are in Florida during the polo season.

Georgia is a vet in upper state New York. Her best friend Billy invites her to spend a week with him going to polo games and parties. When Alejandro and Georgia see each other at a party there is an immediate attraction.

The romance story was disappointing. It was obvious that the author made an outline, put in reasons for the couple to be apart, and then filled in the words. The things the characters said and did were predictable - nothing was unusual or special. It felt like TV writing. Most of the book used inaccurate assumptions to keep the couple apart. Most of the story is about A’s and G’s angst and grief about being apart from each other. The reasons were not interesting - described in Spoilers below.

The biggest thing missing was dialogue. Right after reading “High Season” (HS) I read “Level UP” (LU) by Cathy Yardley. Boy what a difference. It was like night and day. If you read LU right after reading HS, you’ll see the difference - how dialogue makes characters come alive.

In HS there was too much telling, not enough showing.

There were about seven sex scenes. There was very little detail and not enough dialogue - mostly about body parts touching. I did not feel anything.

Keeping the couple apart:
A and G kiss. They like each other. Then A’s daughter comes up and says something to A. G immediately assumes A is dating the daughter. So G leaves and has all this mental anguish and turmoil because she is attracted to a man who is dating another woman (wrong). Of course A doesn’t tell G “This is my daughter.”

A and G accidentally run into each other at night and have sex. Immediately after, A says that should never have happened. G assumes it is because he has a relationship with the other woman (the daughter). The author gives no reason for A to stay away, but spends a bunch of time with A telling himself he needs to stay away from Georgia - for no reason that I could see.

Then A hires G for six weeks to replace a vet on the team. Now A uses that as his reason for staying away from G. Of course he can’t resist her. They have sex again and he has all this torment saying he is her boss he should not do that. Of course G loves him and has angst because he won’t be with her.

Then G’s ex boyfriend arrives to talk to G. She tells him she does not love him. He cries so she comforts him. A sees this and has more angst thinking G has another man in her life. So A is colder to G than before and avoids her, causing G more confusion and angst.


The Ending:
The end was empty and abrupt. There was the big separation. They grieve for each other. Then all of a sudden he comes to her, apologizes, kisses her, and it’s over. The author does not show how or why A changed his mind. The author “tells” that they found each other again. That’s it. It’s over. The next book in the series opens by saying that A and G are married. The proposal and getting married were not told or shown in the first book.

What to say about this book? It was as full of cliched character types and predictable plot twists as any Lifetime or Hallmark Channel television movie. And yet, as with those movies, sometimes you put one on in the background while you're folding laundry or doing your nails. And even though it's cheesy and the writing is bad and the acting lackluster, you keep watching anyway instead of flipping over to TCM the way you know you should. That's what this book was like.

A wonderful mix of Dallas and Dynasty - only with horses. I enjoyed every minute with it. Georgia is a fantastic young woman, Cricket a bitch and Billy the perfect gay friend. Figueras has a colorful, a bit old fashioned writing-style and knows how to use words. This novel is from the very first page great entertainment, diversified and written with a huge variety of words. Absolutely beautiful.

Two months ago, I would have told you VERY VERY firmly that sports contemporaries were not my thing. Not at all. Now I have to say that they are, but the list of sports I’m into is very very VERY narrow- figure skating and uh, polo apparently. Look, there are horses and there are white pants. I’m a simple girl.

This is the first book in a series presented by Nacho Figueras, one of the world’s best polo players and face of Ralph Laurens’ polo line, which take place in the rich and fabulous world of elite polo players.

The best part, for me, was that Whitman understands that her audience may need a quick primer on how polo works, and explains things like why polo ponies are called ponies, even though they are not actually ponies, and how a match is structured, and those traditions we plebs only know about because of the polo match in Pretty Woman. She explains the important bits, but doesn’t get bogged down in the minutiae.

Whitman also knows her horses, and the horses have personality and quirks and one of them has a BFF companion horse and that’s how that works sometimes.

The ending wraps up kind of fast, and involves lugging a couple of horses cross country only to, presumably, turn around and go home, which is RUDE and not that good for the horses.

This was a sweet romance and had complex families and also sorts of mild angst and horses and I liked it a LOT. There are two more books in the series, and I’m excited to read those. There’s dudes in polo pants, and also ponies.

Endlich komme ich mal wieder dazu eine Rezension zu schreiben. Und dann auch noch über so ein Buch...
Denn auch wenn Liebesromane und Sport oft Hand in Hand gehen, wäre ich wohl nie auf die Idee gekommen, ein Buch über Polo zu schreiben. Aber genau diese "neue Richtung" hat mich neugierig auf dieses Buch gemacht. Und ja, ganz vielleicht auch dass das Buch zusammen mit einen echten Polospieler (denn natürlich musste ich Nacho Figueras erst einmal googeln) geschrieben wurde. Und ich kann euch jetzt schon sagen, ich wurde wirklich positiv überrascht.
Georgia, eine kluge junge Tierärztin, hat so gar nichts mit dem Glamour-Welt und dem Jetset von Wellington zu tun. Aber genau dorthin nach Florida unternimmt sie - nach ein wenig Überredung - zusammen mit ihrem besten Freund einen Kurztrip. Ein ganzes Wochenende voller Champagner, Sonne und Polospielen stehen ihr bevor. Doch womit sie nicht gerechnet hätte ist Alejandro Del Campo. Der älteste Sohn des Del-Campo-Clans und Kapitän eines Polosteams wirft schon bei der ersten Begegnung ein Auge auf Georgia. Doch eine seine wichtigsten Regeln ist es, nie etwas mit einer Mitarbeiterin anfangen. Und nach einem Zwischenfall braucht Alejandro dringend eine neue Tierärztin für seine Ponys. Doch kann er der Versuchung widerstehen?

"Was Georgia allerdings betraf, war er egoistisch. Obwohl er genau wusste, dass er sich in ihrer beider Interesse lieber von ihr fernhalten sollte, sah er sich dazu außerstande."

Georgia war mal wieder keine leichte Protagonistin für mich. Wie ihr sicher wisst, habe ich immer wieder ein Problem mit den weiblichen Heldinnen meiner Bücher. Entweder finde ich sie nervig (und das kommt leider öfter vor als ich es mir wünschen würde) oder ich habe ein Problem damit, eine Verbindung zu ihnen aufzubauen. Und Georgia gehörte leider in die zweite Kategorie. Denn obwohl ich sie nicht wirklich nervig fand, etwas anstrengend vielleicht, aber das sind wir Frauen nun mal ab und zu, hat es lange gedauert, bis ich einen Draht zu ihr fand. Vor allem weil sie sich kaum weiterentwickelt und sich zu oft einfach geschlagen gibt. Sie hätte ruhig mehr für das kämpfen können was sie will.
Alejandro hingegen war wieder mal ein männlicher Protagonist, den ich schnell ins Herz geschlossen habe. Und das obwohl er oft reserviert erschienen ist. Er ist ein mächtiger Mann, dessen Leben sich eigentlich ausschließlich um Polo dreht. Es ist einfach das wichtigste für ihn, bis vielleicht auf seine pubertierende Tochter. Doch Georgia schafft es irgendwie, dass er sie bemerkt. Und ab da verändert er sich immer mehr. Wird weicher und liebenswürdiger. Doch wie es sich für einen echten argentinischen Mann gehört, ist er auch heißblütig. Und diese Mischung machte ihn für mich ziemlich perfekt.
Die Chemie zwischen Georgia & Alejandro war sehr prickelnd. Denn obwohl sie, wenn sie sich dann mal etwas näher gekommen sind, meistens gleich wieder unterbrochen wurden, spürte man die Verbindung zwischen ihnen. Was mir persönlich immer sehr wichtig in einem Liebesroman ist und ein absoluter Pluspunkt für diese Geschichte darstellt.
Dennoch gibt es zwei Kritikpunkte, über die ich einfach sprechen muss. Zum einen ist es, leider Gottes, die Liebesgeschichte. Denn da Die Wellington Saga - Versuchung oft wie eine kleine Telenovela daherkam, bliebt die eigentliche Liebesgeschichte manchmal zu sehr auf der Strecke und wurde zu sehr in den Hintergrund gedrängt. Und zum anderen ist es da Ende der Story. Verdammt, was war das für ein bescheuertes Ende?! Das kam so abrupt und wurde in nicht mal 10 Seiten abgehandelt. Mein geliebtes Happy-End kam deswegen eher lauwarm daher. Schade!

"Wenn man dort draußen auf dem Feld ist, wenn alles so abläuft, wie es soll, dann ist es, als ob du und das Pony eins seid. Du kannst nicht sagen, wo du endest und wo das Pferd beginnt."

Etwas muss ich noch los werden....Heilige Scheiße, wieso war mir nicht bekannt, wie heiß Polo ist?! Ich habe diesem Sport nie sonderliche Beachtung geschenkt. Aber dieses Buch ist so etwas wie eine Ode an Polo. Und wie sehr Nacho Figueras diesen Sport liebt, merkt man dadurch sofort. Es ist wirklich wunderschön beschreiben, kraftvoll und sexy, und macht einen ganz besonderen Reiz in diesem Buch aus.
Alles in allem ist Versuchung ein gelungener Auftakt der Wellington Saga. Ich hatte das Buch innerhalb ein paar Stunden komplett gelesen, so flüssig war es geschrieben, und kann Band 2 wirklich kaum noch abwarten.

I loved High Season!!!
Riveting, entrancing, a little bit racy, a little bit sweet all rolled into one glorious sporting package.
Sweet and lovely country vet Georgia Fellowes gets thrown into the glamorous and elite world of polo courtesy of her best friend and his need for relationship advice. A world filled with money, luxury, gorgeous thoroughbreds and equally gorgeous men. Amongst this powerful set of people she meets Alejandro – from a truly thoroughbred family line of polo royalty, he and his family and team need to win the seasons biggest tournament or their business might be done and dusted. Doing everything he can to ensure that he is at the top of his game and avoiding all distractions he really doesn’t need the complication of the sweet pretty diversion, doctore Fellowes.
I must admit that I did not expect to like this book as I am not usually a fan of books centred around sport, but this book had me from page 1 and I absolutely loved it.
Rippling with sexual tension and sparks from the get go. Alejandro is the perfect mix of broody and brash, with a bit of wounded heart thrown in for good measure. Georgia is a breath of fresh air in a world filled with such plastic vapid women who seek nothing more than the thrill of the chase and a fat bank book. I love that she made him buy Sugar for Temper. That was adorable. I was surprised to find that his family knew who her mother was and knew, more importantly, where she was.
I was a little mad at Alejandro for how he acted before arriving at the hospital, even though I understand his fears, it was a little cruel and heartless. I love that Valentina tells him to go get her papi. Touchingly tender and sweet at the end.
I devoured this book and my only complaint is that it ended. I want more of Georgia and Alejandro. Thank you Allen & Unwin for introducing me to an addictive new series but now I have a small problem… I need book 2… I have to find out what happens next in the Del Campo camp. Help a girl out. Hurry up and release the next instalment.

"Versuchung", der erste Band der "Wellington"-Saga von Nacho Figueras, wurde mir vom Verlag empfohlen und konnte direkt mein Interesse wecken, sodass ich mich sehr auf die Geschichte gefreut habe. Hier habe ich mir eine interessante und prickelnde Liebesgeschichte erhofft, aber leider nicht bekommen, denn die Geschichte war oftmals viel zu klischeehaft und kitschig, sodass mir sehr schnell der Spaß an der Geschichte verloren ging.

An sich mag ich Liebesromane ganz gerne und habe auch nichts dagegen, wenn man sich an den typischen Klischees bedient, dennoch war es mir hier eindeutig zu viel, sodass ich viel zu oft den Kopf geschüttelt habe und das Buch immer wieder zur Seite legen musste, da ich immer weniger Lust auf die Geschichte hatte.

Dies liegt auch mit am Schreibstil, denn dieser ist doch sehr einfach gehalten und bringt nur wenig Anspruch mit sich. Die Charaktere bleiben trotz eigentlich guter Ausarbeitung blass und die Dialoge sind oftmals unfreiwillig komisch, sodass für mich hier vieles nicht zusammen passen wollte.

Dies ist auch der Grund, weshalb ich das Buch letztendlich nach etwas mehr als dreihundert Seiten abgebrochen habe. Manchmal soll es wohl einfach nicht sein.

This is a very easy and enjoyable novel to read that you almost feel compelled to read until you finish! Romance, exotic locations and an interesting and captivating story with engaging characters. Just finished and am looking forwarding to reading the next two in The Polo Season series as the drama obviously continues.
Highly recommended read if you enjoy chick-lit romance with a touch of erotica and high society tensions and conflicts as polo is surely only a game for the rich and famous.

Georgia is a vet specializing in horses. She is invited by her friend to go to polo matches in Florida. She sees that one of the polo ponies is not walking right and she unconventionally stops the match. Alejandro, owner of the horse, realizes she is right and asks her to be the assistant vet for his team. Neither wants to get involved with someone they work with but attraction has other ideas.

I enjoyed this story. I liked the glimpse into high society and the polo lifestyle. I liked Georgia and Alejandro. Both had baggage. They needed to learn to communicate better. Alejandro learns the price of his hanging onto his baggage when he almost loses Georgia and his daughter. I liked the secondary characters. They are an interesting mix. I'm looking forward to getting better insight into them in the next books of the series.

High season was my introduction into sexually explicit content.

Thanks to my grandma.

As to how this could happen, one must know that in German the adult and new adult romance titles have the most beautiful covers one can imagine. So, when one day my grandma took me to the bookshop and told me I could pick anything I liked, of course 12-year-old me chose the prettiest book I could find. And because my grandma trusted me (which obviously was a mistake), she didn’t look closely before buying it for me.

It’s safe to say my mom was furious when she found out a couple years later.

But for my part, High season sparked my love for romance novels and for that I am immensely grateful! (Even though, I really was too young to read it back then.)

I received a copy of High Season through Goodreads Giveaways.

The novel was more enjoyable than I thought it would be starting out. The central romance followed a quite conventional formula of high profile yet mysterious male falls for a quiet small town girl, and the turns weren't difficult to foresee. Despite this, I was constantly entertained by the action and kept wanting to read more. The inclusion of polo and the politics and culture surrounding it were very welcome additions and set the book apart from similar pulp fiction.

Meinung
Wow, was war ich gespannt auf diesen Roman! Ich mochte scho das Cover sehr gerne und der Klappentext hat mich auch schnell überzeugt! Es war klar,dass ich diesen Roman lesen muss und tja, was soll ich sagen/schreiben, ich LIEBE es!

Ich habe dieses Buch an einem Tag ja regelrecht verschlungen, so gefesselt war ich von der Geschichte!
Der Einstieg in die Geschichte fiel mir relativ leicht. Man kommt schnell in die Geschichte rein und je mehr ich von Alejandro und Georgia gelesen habe, desto schneller war klar, so schnell kann und werde ich dieses Buch nicht mehr zur Seite legen können!

Die Geschichte ist einmal etwas anderes. Ich wusste vor diesem Buch beispielsweise fast nichts über Polo. Nun, nach dem Buch kenne ich mich sogar etwas aus mit der Art und Weise, wie ma das erfolgreich spielt!
Nacho Figueras, der hier neben Jessica Whitman, der Autor ist, ist selbst ja ein professioneller und bekannter Polospieler, der es wirklich gut schafft, einem Leser diese fremde Welt und alles was dazu gehört, näher zu bringen!
Das gefiel mir wirklich gut. Auch über die eingesetzten Pferde erfährt man einiges, und man bekommt einen guten Blick in diese fremde Welt voller Pferde und reichen Menschen, die sich um Geld keine Sorgen zu machen brauchen!

Unsere zwei Proganoisten hier mochte ich auch sooo gerne! Schon nach wenigen Seiten habe ich Georgia in mein Herz geschlossen und mit Alejandro ging es mir auch ähnlich. Alejandro ist mega reich und blieb trotzdem bodenständig und normal, was keine Selbstverständlichkeit ist, in einer solchen Welt, wo Geld keine Rolle mehr spielt! Georgia ist das genaue Gegenteil. Sie muss sie über Geld Sorgen machen und führt ein sehr bescheidenes Leben, trotzdem ist sie nicht unglücklich und lebt ihr Leben einfach. Beide passen perfekt zusammen und ergänzen sich auch super!

Fazit
Für mich ganz klar die perfekte Sommerlektüre 2017!
Ich freue mich schon sehr auf die zwei Folgebände die im Juli und im September 2017 erscheinen!
Ein absolutes must-read für Alle, die gerne eine schöne Liebesgeschichte lesen wollen, vor einer schönen Kulisse!

Gemeinsam mit der Autorin Jessia Whitman setzte das Model und der Polo-Liebhaber Ignacio Figueras die Idee der Wellington-Saga in einem Roman um.
Als die Tierärztin Georgia gemeinsam mit einem Freund zu einem Polospiel anreist, trifft sie dabei auf Alejandro Del Campo, dessen Familiendynastie und Polo-Mannschaft für Reichtum und Macht steht. Eine Welt, die für Georgia so unnahbar erscheint. Als jedoch ihre Hilfe als Tierärztin gebraucht wird, willigt sie ein zu bleiben und weckt dabei zunehmend das Interesse von Alejandro...

Die Wellington-Saga weckte mit einer interessanten Thematik und wundervollen Covern mein Interesse.
Ein vielversprechender Einstieg für die Tierärztin vom Lande und dem ältesten Sohn der mächtigen Del Campo-Familie.
Eine Liebesgeschichte verpackt in einem interessantem Umfeld mit einem altbekanntem Klischee – schöne Mittelständlerin trifft auf sexy und reichen Mann.
Die Protagonisten sind sympathisch, allerdings blieben die Haupt- sowie Nebenprotagonisten etwas blass. Die Ansätze sind gut, jedoch fehlt ihnen eine gewisse Tiefe.
Vor allem von Alejandro war ich enttäuscht, für mich war gerade aus seinem Charakter noch mehr herauszuholen. Der angekündigte Sturm, mit dem er Georgia in seine Welt zieht und der so vieles versprach, blieb aus.

Eine nette Liebesgeschichte, die jedoch im Verlauf die Liebe und Romantik aus den Augen verliert.
Immer wieder werden Konfliktsituation aufgebaut, verpuffen jedoch genauso schnell wie sie aufgekommen sind.
Ein Effekt, der auf Dauer die Stimmung trübt.
Trotz so mancher fehlender Spannung ließen die kurzen und knackigen Kapitel ein schnelles Vorankommen zu.
Außerdem bezaubert die Kulisse von Wellington mit einem angenehmen ländlichen und sommerlichen Feeling.
Der Schreibstil ist angenehm, obwohl manche Ausdrücke etwas altbacken klangen – das mag jedoch auch an der Übersetzung liegen.

Das Ende kam für mich unerwartet und in Anbetracht des gelegentlichen distanzierten Verhaltens der Protagonisten, sogar ein wenig schnell und überraschend. Es wirkte eher, als müsse man zum Abschluss kommen...

„Die Wellington Saga – Versuchung“ ist eine nette Liebesgeschichte, die sich so mancher Klischees bedient und dabei noch jede Menge Luft nach oben lässt.
Für einen ruhigen Leseabend ist dieses Buch aber trotzdem gut geeignet!

Ich vergebe daher gute 3 von 5 Sterne.

Mir hat diese Geschichte wirklich gut gefallen, auch wenn ihr etwas mehr Tiefe und Spannung gut getan hätte. So, war es für mich eine sehr unterhaltsame Liebesgeschichte, mit prickelnder aufbauender Erotik, welche aber erst recht spät ins Detail ging. Alles wurde im Sichtwechsel erzählt , der immer wieder mitten im Kapitel vorkam. Dies empfand ich nicht als störend. Alles wurde sehr flüssig erzählt und genau beschrieben. Manche Beschreibungen hätten aber ruhig etwas kürzer ausfallen können, trotzdem war es nicht langatmig. Auch das Thema Pferde und Polo spielen eine große Role, was immer wieder zur Sprache kommt.

Beide Protagonisten mochte ich sehr gerne und fühlte mit Ihnen. Dies fiel mir nicht besonders schwer, da die Gefühle trotz etwas zu wenig Tiefe gut rübergebracht wurden, Beide kommen aus zwei verschiedenen Welten, passen aber dennoch sehr gut zusammen. Denn so unähnlich sind sie sich dann doch nicht. Beide haben noch mit der eigenen Vergangenheit und ihrem Leben zu kämpfen.
Ich mag solche Familiensagen sehr gerne, somit begegnet man nicht nur der Familie, ihren Geheimnissen und Freunden, sondern begegnet auch Protagonisten, die es nicht nur gut meinen und hinterhältig sind. Dies gab der Geschichte zwar etwas Spannung, aber etwas mehr davon hätte nicht geschadet.

Ich kann diese Geschichte trotz etwas zu wenig Tiefe und Spannung wirklich empfehlen, denn mir gefiel sie trotzdem sehr gut und ich empfand es, als einen gelungenen Auftakt . Nur war mir das Ende etwas zu kurz gefasst und ein Epilog hätte mir gut gefallen. Vor allem, da der nächste Band um andere Protagonisten geht, worauf ich mich wirklich freue.

Though this first novel in The Polo Season series is set in a world of utter opulence. Its author is careful to temper said grandeur with very down-to-earth and approachable characters, and a plot spotlighting the universal search of one heart for its corresponding beat.
In the case of Alejandro Del Campo and Georgia Fellows. Theirs is a love which is both complimented and hampered by their love for the noble horses to whom they are both master and servant.

When what was as simple getaway to Florida compliments of her best friend Billy, turns into the opportunity of a lifetime for Georgia. After her quick action and keen eye leads her to diagnose a hidden ailment in Alejandro's prized mare McKenzie.

The bounty that accompanies Georgia's new role as the Del Campo's number 2 vet, comes with quite the price. The man that has stolen her her heart. The undeniable intensity of their attraction to each other, when juxtaposed against their shared respect for decorum and duty, makes for a natural tension that makes the reader anticipate interaction between Georgia and Alejandro on even the most mundane levels.

You can rest assured however, that when these two forces of nature come together; the results will be earth-shattering. The perfect blend of all things emotional and carnal. The love scenes between Alejandro and his lady are the stuff of romantic dreams.

The heat burning its way through the pages of this read burns just as hot outside the bubble of our lovebirds' desire than in. With Georgia meeting opposition at every turn. Whether it be the cold shoulder and blatant disrespect of her direct superior, Gus. Or, the sharp tongue and distrust of Alejandro's teen daughter, Valentina. The drama just keeps coming for Georgia. But then again...so does Alejandro.

This is the perfect read for those who long to be swept away by heart stopping romance, tossed about by the seas of fate, and rescued by true love...on a horse, of course.

„Die Versuchung“ ist der erste Teil der Wellington Saga von Autor Nacho Figueras. Dieser entführt uns in die Welt der Schönen und Reichen, sowie in die Welt des Polosports.
Mir hat der Klappentext sehr gut gefallen und ich dachte, mit einer Pferdegeschichte und einem hübschen Mann, kann man nichts falsch machen und so war ich sehr neugierig auf diese Geschichte.
Nach Beendigung des Buches kann ich sagen, dass mir die Geschichte sehr gut gefallen hat. Der Autor erzählt uns, wie Georgia plötzlich in den Sog des Del Campo Clans gezogen wird. Sie wird von Alejandro angeheuert, um die Polopferde zu betreuen. Die Idee hat mir recht gut gefallen. Es wurden auch vom Autor diverse Probleme eingebaut, die Georgia erwarten, die aber wirklich sehr passend zur Handlung gewirkt haben. Ich sage nur Intrigen.
Die Liebesgeschichte zwischen Alejandro und Georgia hat mir gefallen und ich fand es irgendwie süß, wie langsam es gerade Alejandro angehen hat lassen. Er hat nämlich auch noch mit einigen Dingen aus der Vergangenheit zu tun, die er zuerst verarbeiten will. Die erotischen Szenen wurden romantisch erzählt und man hat richtig gemerkt, wie es zwischen den beiden knistert. Bin hier schon gespannt, ob es in der Fortsetzung mehr zur Sachen gehen wird.
Natürlich gab es jetzt von den Ereignissen her nicht vieles, was wirklich eine Neuerung ist. Aber ich fand die Geschichte dennoch sehr ansprechend.
Die Erzählungen und Ausschnitte über das Polospiel haben mir gut gefallen, denn für mich war diese Sportart neu. Persönlich hätte ich mir aber noch tiefere Einblicke gewünscht, denn es wurde mehr um die Arbeit im Hintergrund erzählt.
Georgia fand ich richtig toll, denn sie wirkt so ursprünglich. Sie ging ja nach dem Studium wieder nach Hause zu ihrem Vater, damit sie ihn unterstützen kann. Es könnte aber auch mit ihrer Vergangenheit zu tun haben, denn vielleicht wollte sie den Vater nicht alleine lassen. Ich finde diese Tat hat sie sehr sympathisch gemacht.
Alejandro wird hingegen eher als Lebemensch dargestellt, der reich ist und der sich alles nehmen kann, was er will. Allerdings hat auch er noch Geheimnisse.
Zusätzlich zu den beiden gibt es noch sehr authentische Nebencharaktere, die mir recht gut gefallen haben.
Der Schreibstil hat mir gut gefallen. Die Geschichte fliegt nur so dahin und ich konnte mich sofort in die Handlung einfühlen. Sehr schön.
Der Autor erzählt uns das Geschehen in wechselnder Perspektive von Georgia und Alejandro.
Das Cover finde ich wieder absolut genial, denn obwohl es sehr dezent und edel wird, hat es noch zusätzlich einen schönen schimmernden Effekt.
Fazit:
5 von 5 Sterne. Klare Kauf – und Leseempfehlung. Ich freue mich schon sehr auf die Fortsetzung

Wasn't sure what to expect when I received a copy of this as it's been a while since i've read anything similar, Jilly Cooper and the like!, but I found it so easy to read and so difficult to put down once I'd started on it that reading it flew by and I loved every single minute of it and am now itching to read more!!

It focuses on the glamorous world of Polo. Alejandro and Sebastian are brothers and the stars of the Polo world and their lives are so removed from reality at times it seems hard to comprehend. But Alejandro has faced tragedy fairly recently with the loss of his wife, and bringing up his teenage daughter alone has also added to his problems, so he has thrown himself more into the sport and that is his only focus. It's all about winning and continuing the family tradition for being the best.

Meanwhile, Georgia is struggling to provide for her father and herself and their various animals on their smallholding so when she is given the opportunity through her friend to join the polo set as their vet, it's an opportunity she can't turn down. And her life gets thrown upside down with the world she is about to enter, and the people she meets! From one extreme to the other!

Loved the glamour and the behind the scenes look at the world of Polo, and the cast of characters all had their good, and bad, points that kept me gripped with wondering where the story would go next. It's the kind of book you an imagine being made into a TV series now - ooh would love to see Aiden Turner as Alejandro! - and the steamy scenes just added to the mix to make this one of the hottest books I've read so far! LOVED IT!!

A fun read that had me finishing the book in one sitting! I just loved the characters, the polo world was fascinating, and the story had a wonderful pace – which is why I never put the book down once I started it!

Georgia and Alejandro were such great characters. Georgia is down to earth and real, definitely not someone who comes from money or privilege, but can hold her own around both. Alejandro is broody, moody, and seems to have forgotten what it is to have fun. He’s still reeling from the loss of his wife and is buried under the responsibility of running the family business now that his father has passed. Even though both Georgia and Alejandro fight the attraction between them, you just know that some things can’t be denied…and it was so much fun watching Alejandro lose his cool when it came to Georgia. I also loved that Georgia always seemed to know what Alejandro needed…and how he could never quite seem to resist her.

I also loved the other characters in this book. The entire Del Campo family was great and I’m looking forward to both Sebastian’s and Antonia’s book to find out more about them. The other supporting characters added a lot of depth and color to the story, from Georgia’s best friend Billy and his boyfriend Beau, to Alejandro’s mother, and of course the mean rich girl Cricket who wants Alejandro for herself. All of these characters and the few plot turns/twists really helped to shape Georgia and Alejandro’s story.

Overall this was a great read that I really enjoyed – perfect for a day at the beach or a rainy day!
