SYRIZA: The Failure of the Populist Promise

This book studies the rollercoaster first year in office of the Coalition of the Radical Left (SYRIZA), which for many Europeans constituted the hope for a different Europe, beyond austerity and national egocentrism. Through a collection of sharp and short articles and interviews that critically chronicle the rapid rise of SYRIZA, the author argues that SYRIZA is not so much a new European phenomenon, but rather a rejuvenated form of an old Greek phenomenon, left populism, which overpromises and seldom delivers. By putting the phenomenon of SYRIZA within a broader Greek and European context, in which political extremism and populism are increasingly threatening liberal democracy, Mudde argues that Greece is neither a new Weimar Germany nor the future of Europe. As SYRIZA has failed to bring the change it promised, the only remaining question now is whether it can establish itself in the Greek party system. This book will be of use to students and scholars interested in Greek politics, comparative politics, populism, and extremism.

Πολύ ενδιαφέρον ανάγνωσμα, που αποτελείται από άρθρα που έγραψε ο συγγραφέας για το λαϊκισμό, την εξέλιξη και την άνοδό του στην ελληνική περίπτωση, συνεντεύξεις που έδωσε σε ελληνικά μέσα και κείμενα που εξηγούν τη θεωρητική βάση της ανάλυσής του και προσφέρουν μια εισαγωγή στη σύνθετη σχέση ανάμεσα στη φιλελεύθερη δημοκρατία και το λαϊκισμό. Το μεγάλο πλεονέκτημα και μειονέκτημα του βιβλίου ταυτίζονται και είναι η οπτική γωνία του συγγραφέα, που ζει μακριά από την Ελλάδα και την αντιμετωπίζει σαν μια ακόμη μελέτη περίπτωσης. Από τη μία, η απόσταση αυτή προσφέρει μια πιο καθαρή και αντικειμενική εικόνα για την Ελλάδα και βοηθάει να γίνουν σκέψεις που λόγω στεγανών και πολιτικής τοποθέτησης αρνούμαστε να κάνουμε. Από την άλλη, υπάρχουν αδυναμίες κυρίως στην πρόσληψη του ιστορικοκοινωνικού πλαισίου (σταδιακή εξέλιξη της δημοκρατικοποίησης στην Ελλάδα, αντίληψη για τη βία στην κοινωνία μας κτλ.).

Θὰ ἔπρεπε νὰ λέμε εὐχαριστῶ καί ποὺ ἀσχολήθηκε αὐτὸ τὸ μεγαθήριο ὁ Cas Mudde τόσο σοβαρὰ μὲ τὸ ΣΥΡΙΖΑ. Βλέπω ὅτι κάποιοι, σωστὰ νομίζω, σχολίασαν πὼς ὁ Cas Mudde δὲν ξέρει τὴν Ἑλλάδα. Γιὰ ἐμένα that's not a bug, that's a feature. Εἶναι ἐξαιρετικὰ σπάνιο νὰ βρῇ κανεῖς ἀνάλυσι τῆς ἑλληνικῆς πραγματικότητας -γιὰ ὁποιοδήποτε θέμα- μέσα ἀπὸ τὰ μάτια ἑνὸς ἐξωτερικοῦ παρατηρητή.
