In a deep-sea station, Tazia Nerif has found her life's work as an engineer, keeping things running smoothly. But she wants nothing more than to break down the barrier of silence between her and her telekinetic Psy station commander . . .
Timeline: Early on in the series, specific time unspecified.
This story can be found in the short story anthology Wild Embrace.
I've been writing as long as I can remember and all of my stories always held a thread of romance (even when I was writing about a prince who could shoot lasers out of his eyes). I love creating unique characters, love giving them happy endings and I even love the voices in my head. There's no other job I would rather be doing. In September 2002, when I got the call that Silhouette Desire wanted to buy my first book, Desert Warrior, it was a dream come true. I hope to continue living the dream until I keel over of old age on my keyboard.
I was born in Fiji and raised in New Zealand. I also spent three years living and working in Japan, during which time I took the chance to travel around Asia. I’m back in New Zealand now, but I’m always plotting new trips. If you’d like to see some of my travel snapshots, have a look at the Travel Diary page (updated every month).
So far, I've worked as a lawyer, a librarian, a candy factory general hand, a bank temp and an English teacher and not necessarily in that order. Some might call that inconsistency but I call it grist for the writer's mill.
I love every book in which a Psy male learns to love either a human or a Changeling. Every time he learns to let go and he basically tries not to demolish things and not kill his partner, I cannot stop laughing. And usually all the Psy males are gorgeous, cool and virgins. This story was definitely another win for me.
A sweet little star crossed lovers tale with a happy ending. Tazia is a human who risked her family's love for a future outside of her village. Stefan is a Psy telekenetic of huge power. She is drawn to him but to her he seems completely unmoved by her. Then when she needs someone to lean on, he's there for her. They have a month together to learn so much more than they every expected. I just loved this story. The ending was perfect.
Wow this novella packed an emotional punch and a satisfying love story in it. I loved it and it made me cry. Tazia (h) is a human engineer in a deep sea station and Stefan (H) is the Psy commander of the station. Tazia feels that her family has disowned her because she chose to pursue something outside of her culture and Stefan is a Psy with faults due to a childhood trauma. We get both of their backgrounds and the slow build of them developing a relationship while on a month long required leave when Stefan asks Tazia if she would like to help him rescue and rebuild in an earthquake affected area.
I loved the way they showed care for each other, opened up and were vulnerable with the other, and I genuinely felt their love. I really liked the resolution to Tazia's hurt with her family and even though she and Stefan have to hide their relationship at the end, there's the hope that the world is changing (since this is early in the series). For that reason, I wasn't even disappointed that there wasn't an extended epilogue. No ow/om drama and dual virgins; this was more fade to black with minimal detail.
This one occurs after Visions of Heat. It pairs Stefan a Psy and Tazia a human. Silence hasn’t fallen yet, so for a Psy to feel is a death sentence.
This little novella gives us a peek into Alaris the deep sea station where all three races work together, but most of the story is topside. I liked that we got to see a Human/Psy paring. We haven’t had much of the human element in the series.
Stefan the Tk Psy who spends most of the year in a deep sea station has been mentioned a few times during the Psy-Changeling series, and his novella did not disappoint! I loved his story with Tazia, the human engineer who works alongside him in the deep sea station.
There was so much tenderness and empathy between them, it made my heart ache. Even though Stefan had been conditioned to not feel, he gave strong “he loves quietly but surely” vibes.
Este si me gustó más es un relato pequeño entre un psi y una humana algo que no habíamos visto, todo en general de el relato se me hizo novedoso desde en donde se conocen, sus historias y como terminan, espero verlos después 🤭🥹
Reread: upgrading this to 5 stars. I really love this story. It gave me all the feels, including a few tears, even the second time around. Probably my favorite novella of the series.
4 stars. I loved this story! It was extremely well done for a novella, I wish it was longer so I could get more time with this sweet couple.
This was my favorite story in the Psy-changling world BY FAR. It may have been shorter, but it packed a punch. I shed a few tears and really hope I'll be seeing more of Stephan and Tazia in the future.
This was very different from the first two books - it's a human and Psy pairing for one, which really changed the dynamic. Not a mating situation but two people who've worked side by side for years. In addition, the Psy was a man for the first time and I don't know why, but for me that really changed the feel. And, significantly, there is no sex until basically the end and, for me, the way the fell in love without the sexual interactions was even better.
I loved the characters and the depth of their experience and growth, despite being a shorter story. I fell hard for them both and I will be very sad if we don't get more of them down the line.
I am so glad I was able to listen to this story, as Angela Dawe always does an incredible job bringing stories to life. She probably added a lot to my love of both these characters.
I'm so glad I decided to read the short stories along with the main books in this readalong.
Perfect, amazing, 100/10. Seriously, I'm calling it-these 2 are the cutest, everyone else can go home. Stefan is 1000x better than any other guy this series, or most series for that matter, has produced. And so is Tazia. And so is their courtship! Seriously teeth-rottingly cute. When he told her he sometimes lied to her about grease on her face just so he could talk to her-I was nearly in tears. Worthless adorable dorks, both of them, and I love them for it. My only criticism is that it didn't go on forever.
Stars: 3 / 5 My Recommendation: Another good novella that would give the readers a glimpse into the Psy-Changeling world, filled with Psy, Changeling and Humans, who are living together, ruled by Psy but the other two races making the playing field even. Of course there is romance, passion, war, friendship, loyalties and betrayals along the line.
Echo of Silence is the seventh novella in the long running Psy-Changeling Series by Nalini Singh, published in August of 2016, as part of Wild Embrace anthology. The primary plot revolves around Stefan Berg - a Tk-Psy working as station commander of Alaris Deep Sea Station - and Tazia "Tazi" Nerif - an engineer at the same station.
Psy-Changeling series focuses on three races living side-by-side on Earth - The icy Psy who rule the world struggling with fall of Silence; the Changelings with natural mental barriers to fight the Psy invasion; and the Humans having decided to level the playing field. The series takes the readers through the downfall of Psy, their drawbacks, why all three races are needed for survival of each other, and above all finding mates across races thus disintegrating the walls further.
In continuing with the series that intrigued when I picked it's spin-off, Psy-Changeling Trinity Series, here is my take on the next novella in the parent series. This time Nalini takes us back to the beginning of the series, by setting the plot in 2079 right after the events in the second book Visions of Heat.
In Shards of Hope, Nalini had concluded this arc of the Psy-Changeling series with a promise of four cute novellas along with one big plot of all the ensemble. We read and enjoyed the ensemble in Allegiance of Honor (https://inspirethoughts.livejournal.c...). Now on to the fun novellas that were published later in the same year as the big plot.
We heard about Stefan Berg first in Shield of Winter, but we came to know that he has a human mate in the previous book Allegiance of Honor. I was wondering if Nalini would tell his story, and so was a pleasant surprise when it was the first novella in this anthology.
Stefan Berg works as a station commander of Alaris Deep Sea Station, a Tk-Psy who had been trained hard but rejected. When Tazia Nerif joins his station, he cannot help but give in to the cracks happening with his Silence. But Tazia has her own past that she needs to connect to before she can take on Stefan.
It is a very small but sweet story of love between a Psy and a human, at a time when such mingling was frowned upon, when a Psy couldn’t break Silence, when a Human couldn’t bind to a Psy. A sort of forbidden love story that Stefan and Tazia get as a surprise for them, that they cherish and make the readers root for them through the falling of Silence.
No major surprises or battles other than what our lead characters face with each other with the plot. Simple, straight and very very charming with a bit of insight into the Psy world.
Like her other series', there is romance and passion in the plot with hidden humor that lightens the plot. She has very less of repeat paraphrasing and hardly any sub-plots or inconsequential details that she normally leaves though.
Another sweet little tale that gives the readers more insight into of this fantastic series. A good novella that would definitely intrigue the readers to pick up the series.

"Echo der Stille" ist eine Novelle aus der "Psy Changeling" Reihe von Autorin Nalini Singh. Man sollte sie nach dem 2. Band lesen.
This was short, but beautiful and heart-warming. Stefan and Tazia were adorable together.
"As she wrapped a more feminine scarf around her head in a gentler style, leaving her mouth and nose visible for now, he told her he found her beautiful. And looking into his eyes, she felt that way. “No grease streaks for once,” she said, nervous.
“I have a confession.” He rose from the bed. “I only used to say that to have an excuse to speak to you. Sometimes you didn’t have grease on your face. I lied.”"
So in re reading this I realized it is not completely a stand alone. White we don’t see Stefan again, sigh, he in mentioned in Shield of Winter by both Judd and Vasic.
This story is a complete stand alone story and it has rocketed to the top of my list.
Tazia is a human working with Stefan a Psy, and there is chemistry plus. This book is a pure romance and contains a lot of humor. I loved it.
I love love loved this. Stefan and Tazi were so perfect. I can't for the love of God understand how Ms. Singh can do so much with the characters in 30 pages. Other authors don't do it in 300, but this little tale was absolutely amazing. Thank you so much!
A bit of a different story to the rest of the series so far - with a human/psy paring. I liked the idea of an underwater station filled with a mixture of human, changelings and Psy, all working together. I enjoyed the characters and their story and for once i actually think the short story format actually worked really well, since the characters storyline was explained, worked through and finished in a very nice way.
All in all a nice story and that is well told and interesting, with good characters.
This was a really interesting story with 2 characters I really liked (but are completely separate from the characters we normally see in the series). I really liked seeing them get together and it ended in a HEA but they do have to hide their relationship because silence is still the rule. I do hope that we get to see more of them later to see how they managed and how things change once silence isn't an issue. :D
I really liked Tazia and Stefan makes me cry with his history. I do have some Feelings about how Tazia makes some comments that come across as “you’ll find the right man one day” near the beginning that felt erasive of ace/aro and lesbian identities, but other than that I really enjoyed this short story. I wish there was more cuz I really liked these characters and especially loved seeing Tazia reconnect with her family.
Reread March 2022: this novella is so good and knowing more about Silence and the PsyNet, I love revisiting Tazia and Stefan, especially as there are several mentions of Stefan in later books as it relates to his bond with Tazia in the Net. Much better as a reread than I remember it being first time.
In the deep-sea station Alaris, Tazia Nerif has found her life's work as an engineer. She keeps the station running and even though she is shut out from her blood realtives, she found a new family in the staion she calls her home. But when Tazia and her Psy commander Stefan volunteer at a catastrophic earth-quake sit, unexpected passion and feeling bubble up and neither of them are able to ignore it.
A cute and sweet story of a relationship between a Psy and a human before Silence was dropped. Actually it was really insightful, considering Stefan actually took quite a risk falling in love with Tazia. I would definitely recommend this, as this little romance is not that complicated and super sweet and cute.
Wow! This story was absolutely beautiful. It’s one of the best love stories I’ve ever read and I need more of Tazia and Stefan’s story!
I loved everything about this novella. I loved that Tazia respected her beliefs and values and stayed true to them. My heart broke for her that she chose to follow her dreams instead of being the dutiful daughter and following her father’s plans for her life. Stefan is an emotionless telekinetic psy, but found himself drawn to Tazia the instant they met a year earlier. A forbidden love with deadly consequences. Is it worth the risk?
