In a unique collaboration, The Breast Cancer Fund, the American Cancer Society, and the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation invited artists and writers across the nation who had faced breast cancer to submit their work. The result is Art.Rage.Us., a riveting book of art, fiction, poetry, and prose, and a bold testimony to the courage of women who face the disease. At turns stirring, humorous, heartrending, introspective, stark, and defiant, the pieces in Art.Rage.Us. have the power to comfort, provoke, and transform. For each of the 75 artists, the impulse to transform her experience of breast cancer through creative expression was an integral part of the search for healing. Together their work forms a inspiring statement about the healing power of art.
As a survivor, I could really relate to this powerful book. I had to take it in small doses, as it made me cry sometimes. I rejoice that women can express their feelings through creativity and touch other lives. Things are more talked about now than they were in 1998 when this came out. At first I wondered why they called it "RAGE...?" not "a little mad." I too have felt like a wild animal was biting at my breast. The book touched me in a way that no self-help or medical "get over it" book could. It gave me permission to have strong feelings and find an outlet for them.
A art book dedicated to women who have had this awful disease. It is a vast collection of art, photography and articles about breast cancer. It is not for the feint of heart. I keep it hidden in my bookcase next to my bed, away from my daughters' eyes. I will show it to them as they get older.
