Oh my! This is by far my favorite of this series!!
I couldn't wait for Jos and Ilyan to find their way back to each other. I mean I must have been at least in the same state as Jos or even worse!
Also, this book sent me back to memory lane, all the way down to the first moment Jos saw him, the anger I felt when I realised that he was her soulmate and not the one she thought she loved, the butterflies I felt when he dressed up and took her out and they danced, when she fully accepted him and when he braided her hair, the silent tear when she discovered he was missing-possibly dead, the relentless quest to find him, his own struggle to keep alive and find that particular person that was ingrained deep in his body, soul and memory... all of it!

Warning, spoilers:
I was really disappointed with this book. 😢

Actually, my disappointment goes back to the way Crown of Cinders ended, because Sain seemed to die so easily and it all felt a little confusing with Joclyn finding out her true identity and that she had to die (what happened after that? Who found her? Did she take months to come back or was it instant? How did that work?) and there was so much chaos going on, and then with the fight with Ilyan and Ovailia, you just assumed both died in the cave.

Then, with no warning whatsoever, the next chapter comes & Joclyn’s on the beach in France, there’s no explanation like ‘x years later’, you’re just thrown into the future unexpectedly, and she discovered that Ilyan is alive. Book ends. Ok, no worries, there’s one book left and that made me excited to read it!

So even though I was frustrated with how the final showdown happened in Crown of Cinders and how the loose ends were kind of sloppily tied up, I was so excited to see that A- Ilyan was indeed still alive and B- to find out what was going to happen after they rescued him because so much had happened in the world with the Vily escaping, and I wanted confirmation that Ovailia and Sain truly were dead, etc. I just needed better clarification and closure to this story spread out in over 8 previous books.

In this book, “Ilyan”, I expected there to be a lot of interaction regarding these characters, at the least letting us know what was going on with Joclyn while Ilyan was imprisoned for 15 years! There’s none til the very very end. By the time I reached half way through the book and realized I was still only on year 8 of Ilyan’s imprisonment, I knew the whole book was going to be about his imprisonment. I was very frustrated.

Not only was it so hard to read because it went through 15 years of torture of this once powerful King, which was heartbreaking and dark to read, but also, the plot dragged on. I found myself skimming through a lot because reading about his torture and as the reader knowing who he is and what he could do, it was beyond frustrating and unenjoyable to read. Like ok, enough already, just move this along.

I wished that the author would’ve first of all, not have dragged out those 15 years- skip over most of it while still giving us the info that he was tortured and what they wanted from him without making us endure the entire book with it.

Secondly, if she would’ve done what she did in all the other books and switched back and forth between Ilyan and Joclyn’s perspectives it would’ve broken up the slow/maddening feeling of Ilyan’s imprisonment and we could’ve seen what Joclyn and Wyn and Ryland were up to all those years and how they were trying to put things back together. What happened with Joclyn appointing Ryland as King, etc. any info on confirming Sain’s and Ovalia’s deaths. I did see at the end of the book that there’s a spin off series that may seem to address this, but it would’ve been appreciated in some aspect within this story.

I feel like if the author would’ve had maybe the first third or even half at most of the book be about Ilyan’s torture and him regaining his memory and powers, speeding us along through those fifteen years, that would’ve been more than sufficient, then have it pick up where the last book left off with Joclyn and Ryland rescuing him. I wanted more reunion scenes with all of the characters, I wanted to see his people apologize for the way they treated hi m and Joclyn with the Sain thing. I wanted their vindication.

Speaking of that, I also didn’t like Ilyan not taking his Kingly role back. I know he probably needed a little time after all of that torture, but HE is the King and Joclyn should be Queen- she’s the freaking Silny, the origin of magic! All of those magical races should be falling over themselves in apology for how they mistreated her and should be honoring and serving her, so I’m not excited about this direction and Joclyn and Ilyan taking a backseat in this world, and not excited about Mira possibly becoming Queen if Ryland stays King and their relationship develops into the direction it seems to be going in.

Also, the biggest thing of all that bugged me was why did Joclyn never have any sight visions of what was happening to Ilyan all of those years?? I guessed that their bond was broken when she “died”, but if he was alive somewhere, you would think she’d have some sort of sight about it? This would’ve been interesting to read what was happening with her all that time, as I mentioned earlier.

Even if she didn’t get all of the intel of where he was in a sight, it would’ve been cool if the narrative perspectives changed from Ilyan to her and showed her getting glimpses of Ilyan alive somewhere being tortured and her trying to find him. And what she and Ry, etc, were doing to put the world back together.

She restored Ilyan’s magic somehow when they touch at the end and their bond is reconnected and they can read each other’s minds, but then that still doesn’t explain why their bond was broken to begin with? If it broke when she died, then wouldn’t they have to be ‘rebonded’ to restore their connection? That didn’t happen, he just touched his scarred hand to her and it restored his magic and their bond. Maybe I just missed out on an explanation, it just seemed confusing. The point was, I feel like she, as the Silny, the origin of magic, should’ve/would’ve known he was alive and would’ve had some kind of sight about it. I don’t like that fifteen years passed and it took mortals and snail mail for the Most Powerful to find her man.

I’m not trying to be too critical, I thoroughly enjoyed this series, these characters, especially the first four books. Rebecca Ethington is an incredible writer and world-builder, I absolutely fell in love with these characters.

But I would say all of the books, especially the later books, need an editing overhaul. A lot of grammatical errors and typos, as well as I think books five and six could be edited into one book. They felt slow, like there was a lot of excess info on minor characters lives so long ago, too much detail that I wasn’t interested in, and the plot felt stunted with a lot of repeats of previous scenes from previous books (sometimes word for word), just from another character’s perspective.

I’m going to read The King of Imdalind series, hopefully I like it and don’t get frustrated with Ryland being King instead of Ilyan. I still highly recommend this series.

Intense Mystery

This book really sets up for the last book in a very satisfying way. It doesn't give up too much, just keeps moving you along thinking you know everything, but then quietly turns it all on its ear. I am way excited for the last book in the series.

Perfect companion to The Imdalind Series! Ilyan by Rebecca Ethington is the conclusion fans of the series have been waiting for. Not only that it sets up the new spinoff series, making me even more excited than I already was. At the end of Crown of Cinders, readers are left wondering what happened during the years Ilyan was missing. Where was he? What happened to him? What was going on that Jocelyn couldn’t find him? This book answers those questions.

Ilyan is not the same person I knew and loved from the original series. He is lost, almost like a young child, and frustrated that his memory is gone. Becoming known as Jan Kowalski, Ilyan struggles to grasp to the few memories that filter in. He tries to decipher what they mean and clings to the few clues he receives. There is one theme to his memories though and that’s a woman whom he loved deeply. Tortured and beaten, Ilyan slips into comas for years at a time, while his magic slowly heals him.

The book revolves around Ilyan and his missing memories but also around the events taking place in the world outside the hospital. He catches glimpses of it on the news, and his nurse also filters information to him. The world isn’t how it should be. After the dome and vily escaped into the world, chaos erupted and the world fell into war. It’s a dystopian mixed with the urban fantasy I’ve come to love from Ethington. While the first part of the book was slow moving as Ilyan tried to remember who he was and learned to control his magic, the second half more than made up for it.

Overall I really enjoyed Ilyan. I found myself horrified at what my beloved character went through and rooting for him to remember Jocelyn. Every memory was perfect. Some are familiar but from Ilyan’s perspective (which I LOVED) and some were new. What made this book great though was how it sets up the new series. It introduces the villain, the dystopian-like world post-Sain/Edmond, and why Ilyan has stepped down from his role. For anyone that loves the series this is a must read!

A Spark of Vengeance by Rebecca Ethington is the first in a new spin-off Imdalind series about Ryland Krul. I’ll admit I was equal parts excited and nervous for this book. Ryland was my favorite character at the beginning of the Imdalind series and by the end I was heartbroken for and terrified of him.

A Spark of Vengeance picks up three years after the end of Crown of Cinders. Ryland is now Jos’s second in command. Ilyan is missing, presumed dead and she has become the rightful queen of Imdalind. At first I really wasn’t sure how this would work. Ry went from loving Jos to trying to kill her to being completely crazy thanks to Edmund. However I love how Ethington handles this. Told exclusively from Ry’s POV, you get to understand his thought process and his daily struggles. My heart broke all over again for this boy, now man.

The plot of this book is fairly simple at first glance. Ry and the survivors of Sain’s war are looking for Chosen (those bitten by the infected Vily) in order to save them and teach them to use their new found powers. Joclyn is the only one that can heal them properly from the infected magic. At the beginning of the book Ry and Thom are attacked while looking for these Chosen. Now there is suspicion that Ovailia, who they thought was dead, is planning an attack on them.

Wyn and Ry travel to London to investigate and things get hairy. I personally like the plot of this series more than Imdalind I think (and that’s saying a lot!). There’s more magic, more history about the people of Imdalind, just more everything. I love seeing my favorite characters in a new light and new situations. And I LOVE the dystopian element of this series as it is set after the fall of Prague.

Overall I really enjoyed this book. Ryland has his hands full and I cannot wait to see where Ethington takes his character. His character has a lot of growing to do still and there are many things ahead of him that will test and try him. I can’t wait 😀

Finally done with this book. I skimmed most of it (20%-90%) because it felt like the story dragged on. I wished I had gotten the aftermath/200 years later. There was nearly not enough Ilyan and Joclyn. Also, the ending with Kaye was so short and unsatisfying. I wanted the reunion and for Kaye to be introduced to Ilyan’s family. In the epilogue they don’t mention her but I would like to imagine she might have had some major impact in helping in some way.

Maybe the point of this book was to make it feel like I was supposed to go through this fifteen years of torture and pain and loss with Ilyan but I just had no motivation to finish this book. Also, I wish that the memories of Ovailia had been sprinkled into the other books to have made her more likable. Her sacrifice would have felt more emotional, I think.

I wish I could get through more of the Imdalind world but the entire series didn’t do it for me. I am glad I finished the series and I will miss Ilyan and Joclyn.

Finally! I have somekind of sense of closure from this series.
But I wish there were more to it.. more of their future .. kids or anything . An epilogue would be nice! But still better then the ending of the last book

So this was a hard book to get thru. Watching Ilyan deal with trying to figure out who and what he is all while being experimented on was difficult. Its hard to see a character you have come to love go thru something like that. I think that Ethington did a good job at portraying the fact that there are time jumps and Ilyan is disoriented most of the time. However, at times it was hard to keep up with what was going on and how much time had passed. I am content with the ending of the book and loved **SPOILER** seeing them back together.

I did have small problem with the certain plot holes in the story that honestly, started the last book… how did Jos escape her death. How does Ilyan get back to normal with his magic. I felt that things during the 15 year gap were left unanswered. I know this is the end of their story and I am left with some questions I wish had been answered within the story. Overall I am glad to see what happened to Ilyan during the gap – just wish I got to see what happened to Jos and everyone else as well ( yes I know this was a book about him – but with getting use to having multiple POV in story it was strange to only see one side of things)

"PERFECTION" is the first word that comes to my mind when describing this Book. Rebecca Ethington wrote another EXCEPTIONAL BOOK ! ! ! ! !

This Series has been one of my all time favorites. I thought Crown of Cinders was the last book in this series, just as I'm sure everyone else whom has read the Series thought as well... But "NO" REBECCA heard her fans, listened to our out pouring of love for these characters and surprisingly gave us all such a WONDERFUL gift of another book in this series !!!!! I'm solo appreciative I could cry. Because , I mean WOW, there just aren't enough words to explain how grateful I am to her. This book was phenomenal, I was on the edge of seat reading it, I couldn't put it down until I absorbed every word. I cried with Jocelyn and ilyan. It was written Beautifully, every single chapter. What a brilliant mind Rebecca Ethington has, to write such Amazing characters that you fall in love with, I laughed, I cried and I felt like I was in the same room with all of them, like a fly on the wall. If your looking for a new series to read by an excellent author, look no futher. This is it !!!

Good enough - could have been better

I liked this book. The ending of the previous book left me unsatisfied and wondering what was going to happen after. I enjoyed reading from Ilyans point of view in this book and seeing how the aftermath of his fight with Ovailia affected him. However, some areas of the book dragged on a little longer than I would have liked, such as talking about the SSU and government and the torture and dangerous SSU situations were rather repetitive.

I did love Kaye and her mother. Her mother wasn't as much of a remember-able character, but it talked about her enough to know she cared for Ilyan and did not fear him as the other people did, even sympathizing when he was tortured. I liked how Kaye was always around and Ilyan could physically see how the time had gone by as he was in a coma, years passing as she grows old.

I liked this book, I would rate it a 3.7 stars out of 5

Pros:
Ilyans point of view
Kaye's friendship and loyalty
Ilyan's memory of Joclyn, depicting how he feels about her and the memories they have together

Cons:
Slightly Repetitive
Not much about Ilyan and Joclyn's future (Kids, etc.)
Drags on in some areas

Is love stronger than anything?

When the King of Imdalind is dead, or at least thought to be dead, life moves forward. While in a hospital in Kiev, Ilyan is tortured for something he doesn't even remember he has. His magic! He makes a good friend, Kaye, and they work together to escape the hell they live in. While all of the torture and sleeping happens, one thing remains. Jocelyn! Our King knows he can't give any information about Jos to these abusive people. They may torture her for her magic, as they have this man. The man with no memories of what it is he's actually protecting. Just the knowledge that his soul needs Jocelyn safe.

Will our King be able to find his memories? Will he survive the torture? Will the two soul mates heal each other? If these are questions you want answered? Read Ilyan! It's a must read for fans of the Imdalind series.

Out of all the characters in this series I must say Ilyan is my absolute favourite! He never wavers, he knows what needs to be done and he sticks to his convictions.

I couldn’t get enough of this book-there were a couple in the series that I was unsure about-but this one is definitely top 3 of the series! When I had to stop reading and actually work all I thought was abut Ilyan and what was he going to do and how.

The setting was amazing, the detail so crystal clear and my heart just kept reaching out for the characters. I can not boast about this book more! So happy to have read it!!

The end...

I can’t believe I finished this Imdalind series! I was eager to finish this series cuz these books had me in all the feels! I loved it, I hated it. Back & forth & I had a hard time making up my mind about it. This story had everything. Big time Romance, Soap opera Drama that had me angry, sad, & happy, and Awesome Magical Adventure. I complained about the characters alot but after finally finishing this series I say that I loved it. I won’t read it again but I won’t forget it. Highly recommend if your that person that likes a hot mess story!

A wonderful conclusion to the series

A little strange having been the complete focus of Ilyan, but needed. It brought home now much the whole story line/world created by the series is a delicate and varied range of hardship/destruction with love and healing.
This book did seem a bit rushed "to press" as there were a large number of word errors, most likely from a word processor program and overlooked as the mind corrects words without conscious thought to the error in hard format.

WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD!!!

This book was a slight disappointment. It was boring and basically just repeated itself over and over. The only part of the book that I enjoyed was the end, when Ilyan and Joclyn were reunited. I really think Rebecca Ethington lost her touch with this last book. I really enjoyed the previous books, but this book didn't make me feel anything like the other books did, and it also made me want to get the book finished more.
I definitely don't recommend this book as much as the other books.

Love this series

I have waited for this book for a long time. I read it in one day, I just couldn't put it down. The things that Iilyan went through were horrible and all the years that passed. I think what he went through was bad but I would like to know what the others were going through also. I loved the story

Good story, needs better editing

The story is great and a good ending to the series, but editing errors completely distracted me from the story. If it got another run through of editing it would be a better read. I’m easily distracted by poor grammar and this book has tons. If that doesn’t bother you, then you’ll love the story.

I wasn’t a fan of this book. I thought it dragged. And I found myself scanning parts instead of reading. I am a huge fan of the Imdalind series. I just didn’t feel like this book went with the style of the other books. Not my favorite book.

It's not my usual type of genre however I was bored so bought the first book.....after that one I was a goner! Kept it up til I got to the end and I tell you it sucked me in! Not many series do that to me. So kudos on a story well done!

Meh. Kinda let me down with this one.

I hate to say this because I was in love with this whole series but this final book was a bit of a bore.
Things dragged on in ways that were extremely annoying. It took me forever to finish, because I just couldn’t get into it like the others. I gave 3 stars because overall I like the major parts...just not how long it took to get to them.

NO. The same theme of pain and torture for another book. Just no. The only good thing was discovering Ilyan was alive and then everything at the end. Everything else was awful, depressing and not worth it. I love these characters and all I want is for them to get some happy...
