One of Horror's most respected authors, Iain Rob Wright is the writer of more than forty books, many of them bestsellers. A previous Kindle All-Star and a mainstay in the horror charts, he is a prolific producer of unique and original stories. From his apocalyptic saga The Gates to his claustrophobic revenge thriller ASBO, Iain writes across a broad spectrum of sub genres, creating both beloved series and standalone titles.
With work available in several languages and in audio, Iain Rob Wright is one of the fastest rising stars in horror, but when not writing he is a dedicated family man. Father to Jack and Molly, and husband to Sally, he is often seen sharing his family memories with his fans on Facebook.
The story, The Peeling, it the first story in this collection. It is a story centered around an unimaginable outbreak. However, and more importantly, it is a story also about what and who people are or become when chaos goes into overdrive and death is at every corner. Enjoy an emotional, crazy, and inspirational story that takes its readers through the events of the onset of the nastiest outbreak one can imagine. Iain Rob Wright will guide you through the good, noble, wicked, and vilest quantities that structure humanity. While readings ask yourself, what would you do if the world became infected with a flesh-eating virus? Would you be a person who panicked or one who would give your life to same those you could? I cannot honestly say what kind of person I would be in a time of such a horrific crisis, but I hope I will be like the main character, Devey.
I must admit I did not read the "Other Terrifying Tales." I just wanted to read about the Peeling. The science is horky, and there are multiple typos and broken spots in the narrative. And the evil scientist in the lab made me roll my eyes. (He was way too "BWWWWAAAAHHHHAAAAHHHHAAA" and hands-rubbing-together for me. )
I wanted to read it to dip my toes into some Iain Rob Wright. He says in the intro that the Peeling stories were written when he was less mature as a writer. It shows. But the weird+gross factor is just what I like.
Iain Rob Wright's earlier works might suffer a bit from lack of narrative and the occasional plotholes, but certainly make up for it in enthusiasm and originality.
The Peeling was originally one of Iain's earlier works and consisted of five seperate short stories that were all set in the same time period. A period where the world is in the grip of a devastating and terrifying pandemic called 'The Peeling' Iain himself claimed to be unhappy with these early stories, but I was quite impressed with both the storylines and the different characters. The first part of this book adds a new chapter to these stories and I hope it won't be the last....
Then, for desert, we are treated to some of the stories that the author wrote for his band of supporters on Patreon. Yes, my name is in the front of this book - super cool fanboy stuff - and this author deserves more fans! Head over to Patreon and pledge if you dare...!
All in all a fabulous little book and very much worthy of your hard earned cash.
I usually really like Iain Rob Wright, and I wanted to love this book...but....
Right off the bat, the editing was just awful. A couple examples I spotted in the first 12 pages of the book included:
"Me and her will be a team." "I doubt your squeamish, being a nurse, but it was a nightmare." (Note the use of your instead of you're.)
Unfortunately, the editing, or lack thereof, continued throughout the entire novel.
Then, oddly, I felt like I was reading two completely different Peeling stories. The symptoms, the modes of transportation, the length of incubation....nothing was the same from one story to the next. Even worse, it really wasn't a very interesting plague.
As for the short stories after The Peeling, apparently, a mother can lose a finger and just go about her day...no medical attention required. Oh, and a character can go from being a man named Jay to a woman named Jayne in just a few pages...no explanation given.
Can't lie though, I found myself laughing out loud at the description of the plane and the pilot in the story Chicken Boy, but all the references about vaccines not causing autism, I really could have done without.
WOW I really enjoyed The Peeling - Book 1 to 5 terrifying tales of horror Novellas by Iain Rob Wright.
Who would have thought a game of bingo would lead to a massive game of chance ending in hospitilastion and horrifying deaths. Nowhere is safe from this viscious virus which makes people's skin peel and shed just like snakes.
The Peeling Book 1 - Jeremy's Choice
Jeremy is a middle aged Security Guard for Never Stops News television station who would much rather be at home than in the studio. Just before his shift ends a young lady is being attacked in the studio because it looks like she is showing symtoms of the peeling.
A TV studio network phone-in programme by the name of Never Stops News stated that four million people have been affected throughout UK and over ten times that amount worldwide and numbers are on the rise. This is known as a global pandemic and the peeling, someone is hiding the real numbers and there is a fifty fifty chance of surviving and one hundred percent of dying.
The Peeling Book 2 - The Stadium
A group of survivors seek refuge inside a stadium and they hear news that the peeling is subsiding and there may be hope for a brighter future until they encounter a group of soldiers who are hell bent on surviving too that they make it a priority to get inside and try to obliterate the survivors.
The Peeling Book 3 - Warriors
Two different sectors of the armed forces, the SAS and Brititsh Army Infantry fight to the death as one side has gone to the devil and the other still have hope, empathy and compassion for their fellowman. One side wants to infiltrate survivors who are trying to survive in a supermarket in order to overthrow them and reside there themselves.
The Peeling Book 4 - Patient Zero
Patient Zero has been incarcerated in a secure unit underground since he was a baby and now he has reached middle age. He has only a television showing newsreels for company and has been used as a pin cushion by the scientists and doctors within the facility. Patient Zero was found as a baby in Wales, hence his name Welsh and is immune to the virus and likened to the the Messiah. The facility is a tight run ship and there is no chance of escape or is there?
The Peeling Book 5 - The Lights
A group of survivors hold up in a hotel when they spot a green blinking light in the sky. They worry in case it may be a nuke, global warming caused by the methane gas emitted from the dead or even aliens as the light comes down in the surrounding woods.
Something is coming for them which is even deadlier than the peeling/plague and is about to wipe out humanity not with a bang but a whimper.
Plus Short story collection
EHLLF - A one parent family consisting of Mother, daughter Mia aged seven, son Tim aged five are tucked up in bed on Christmas Eve when Mia hears a loud clang coming from downstairs, so she informs her Mother who goes downstairs to investigate and Mia and Tim follow her. They are both so excited to see that Santa has been and delivered all their presents. Something behind the presents catches Mia's eye and she pulls out an elf. This elf is not the kind to bring Christmas cheer to their household in more ways than one as they are all about to find out.
VLOG Life - Lance and his friend Tom are professional pranksters who both make their living pulling pranks at the expense of their victims. Lance holds the purse strings and lives life in the fast lane. When a he is found out for his dishonesty Lance is held to account and a camera never lies.
HEIRLOOMS - A young couple, Andy and Tammy move into a very old house which was a snip of a price and included everything that was left by the widow who had lived there and most of the contents were antique. The thing is that when re-decorating they will find what dreadful secrets the house was to give up.
THE EAGLE AND THE WOLF - Manius Furia a Centurian Commander of an ancient Roman army and loyal to Rome. He led his men into unknown terrortory to scout the area and they were known as the Cloaked Eagles. Unbeknown to them an unholy terror was about to be unleased and a fight to the death for Manius and his men was to occur.
CHICKEN BOY - This is a hilarious insight into the lives of Iain, his wife Sal, Mother-in-law, son, Jack and daughter Molly, when they went on holiday to Portugal. Jack gets the dreaded chicken pox and Iain describes the hilarity as he conjures up caricatures.
THE WITNESS - Someone is watching a young Mother with her son playing in a park and the Witness knows it won't be long before he follows them both to McDonalds where this poor single Mother will feed her son a McDonalds Happy meal for the very last time as the Grim Reaper always gets what he came for in the end.
THE BOB SAGA - PART 1: M IS FOR MATTY BOB is hilarious as Iain has a fantasy of a fan named Matty-Bob who also starred in Chicken Boy. Matty-Bob is hell bent on having a piece of his favourite author in more ways than one and the ensuing comedy chase is out of this world.
REVENGE - Part 2 Iain and his family move to a new address in order to ensure they never have to set eyes on Matty-Bob again but Iain and his family are in for a big surprise. Another hilarious and menacing tale.
Fantastic collection of stories, 90% horror, 10% hilarity.
It is somewhat rare to find a short story collection where you like every single story, but this was one for me.
The Peeling 2018: 5 stars If the men who have seen all manner of horrible things are freaked out, you know that things are really bad. This story is intense and absolutely terrifying from beginning to end.

This collection from Iain Rob Wright features several stories about 'The Peeling', as is obvious from the title, but there are other stories included too. Firstly, there are a lot of different takes on the story of 'The Peeling', a life ending infection that literally peels the skin from anyone infected, and how it effects people from different walks of life. I enjoyed the different perspectives which made all the stories, and the world they're set in, feel much more alive to me. Secondly, and somewhat surprisingly are the inclusion of some literally laugh out loud moments of some of the other stories such as 'Chicken Boy'. I had to stop reading one night for fear of waking my sleeping wife with my laughter! As a fan of Iain Rob Wrights horror stories it was nice to see this side to his writing. Is there no end to his writing talent? Don't worry though because there are horror elements to these funnier tales too.
I have one small criticism of the book overall though and that's the spelling mistakes that crop up far more frequently than you'd expect from such an accomplished author. That said, don't miss out on this wonderful collection though as the positives far, far out weigh the negative.
A great collection of horror and some humour in places.
The Peeling, in my opinion, highlights the question as to whether the human race deserves to be saved because of the despicable acts individuals perform in the name of survival.
The extra short stories were a curious mix of nasty and humour. I laughed out loud at Chicken Boy - a clever spoof of the author's 'life'. I don't like to spoil stories for others so I will just say that each of these shorts is definitely worth reading, each thought-provoking and yet could raise a smile.
What can I say Iain Rob Wright has done it again with this brilliant book. The Peeling is really well written and makes you think about what could happen if some deadly disease was released somewhere and not contained to stop it spreading. The other stories in the collection are also well worth a read. I loved the Chicken Boy story as that was a bit of light reading and funny after the horror ones before it. Would highly recommend this book so give it a go and you won't be disappointed.
I liked the first story enough but as they continued on the same theme, I found it difficult to stay interested. The writing was good. I was thrilled to have only stumbled across one grammatical error. (Most e-books I read seem to have a dozens.) I really just couldn't get invested in the characters much after Devey.
I have read many of Iain Rob Wright’s books. I usually enjoy them quite a lot. This book must not have gone through an editor before being published. Misspelled words, singular/plural mistakes, letters left out of words, and a little blip in the story line. It was almost obnoxious reading it with all the mistakes. I would recommend almost ANY of his other books, but NOT this one.
A very entertaining collection! The stories set in the world of the peeling were especially horrific as I could vividly picture it. The humor in the final short stories was a refreshing change of pace. I really look forward to reading more by this author!
I enjoyed these 'peeling' stories. I loved reading about how the peeling affected different groups of people at different times of the deadly outbreak. Author, Iain Rob Wright, is something special.
This wasn't a bad little read considering I'm not a huge fan of short stories/novellas. It was interesting to see the very real difference between the experienced, evolved writer and the beginner.
Had to lose a star for the slightly iffy proof reading.
The stories about The Peeling are great!! I really think this author should write a whole book based on that alone. The other stories are ok but don’t hold a candle to the first few. It’s worth getting this book for that alone.
Iain never fails to deliver. I thoroughly enjoyed the silly bonus stories; Especially the internal Dialogue this man has with himself, about himself and the goid natured jabs towards a fellow author!
….. fantastic book by I.R.W. !!! (Well, except for maybe Chickenboy !!!! 🤣). The Peeling is an absolute Master Piece work of art !!!! “Perfect in every way” as Mac Davis said!!!! You can’t go wrong with this guy !!!!
Loved them all. The peeling stories are gripping and just the thought of slowly melting away but still being alive is hideous. Fantastic imagination. This book is definitely worth a read
This is an excellent updated version of The Peeling, with a significant improvement over the original version and has all the side stories included in an omnibus version. It also includes several amusing short stories. 4/5 stars
The book was good. It’s a list of short stories so there’s only so much you can do with the characters for a limited amount of time. I can’t say the opening short story was the best. In my opinion you spent a lot more time with the characters and you really feel for them.
Another good book unfortunately id already purchased the peeling books wen they first came out, enjoyed the new peeling story very much probably my favourite of the book.
