Housemates #6

Pretty in Pink

Rate this book
Ryan isn't looking for a relationship with a guy--and Johnny isn't looking for a relationship at all.

Ryan's always been attracted to tall, leggy blondes--normally of the female variety. When Johnny catches his eye at a party, Ryan's interest is piqued even though he's never been with a guy before. The attraction is mutual, and the amazing night that follows opens Ryan's eyes to his bisexuality.

Experience has taught Johnny that love hurts. Staying single is safer, and there's no need for complicated relationships when hooking up is easy. When he moves in next door to Ryan, they're both interested in picking up where they left off, and it seems like an ideal arrangement: convenient, mutually satisfying, and with no strings attached.

Despite their best intentions to keep things casual, they develop an emotional connection alongside the physical one. Both begin to want more from the relationship but are afraid to admit it. If they're going to work things out, they need to start being honest--first with themselves, and then with each other.

I am the biggest Jay Northcote fan girl. I ADORE his work, and he is the nicest man on the planet. But I didn't love this book. And, damn it, that makes me sad because this series has been a blast to read.

While I liked seeing the MCs from the other books and appreciated the alternating POV and hot (and I mean SERIOUSLY SCORCHING) sex, I needed:

- Stronger character development

- More communication (These guys were the WORST at skirting around emotions and making stupid assumptions.)

- I love you (Nope, those words were never uttered on page.)

I could have overlooked all that, however, had it not been for the breaking of the Unwritten Rule of Romance Novels.

I'm not going to spoil this for anyone, but suffice it to say:

1. I threw a hissy fit at 62% because FUCK NO.
2. 62% was not the end of it.
3. Johnny is an idiot.

Ever since Johnny was introduced in the previous book I couldn't wait to get my hands on him,so to speak.Get ready because this one is HOT!

Ryan is straight, although he is definitely a bit bi curious. He's totally into tall, leggy blondes so when he sees a girl(he thinks) at a party he's more than interested. When said blonde turns out to be a guy he's not really put off.Johnny definitely hits the spot for him.

Johnny is JUST my type of character *swoons*(more of that later). He's all about the casual hook ups,the last thing he's looking for is anything remotely serious.

One night for them both to get what they want and move on.....no strings....perfect,right?

Except things are about to get a whole lot complicated when they find themselves as neighbours. They agree to a sex only thing with Johnny scared of commitment and Ryan coming to terms with his attraction to Johnny....

But are their limits about to be tested,in the worst way?

What I absolutely loved,

-Johnny (no surprise really).Long blonde hair, skin tight jeans, killer boots, guy liner, and the cherry on top....pink lace boy shorts.I don't think a more perfect character could have been created for me.And he's flirtatious And sexy.

-Ryan,I wasn't sure at the start but I ended up really liking his character.I loved how the Author dealt with his bi curious side,he wasn't constantly berating himself about the fact he might be gay.

-Sex scenes are unbelievably hot and there's a LOT of them.

Issues I had,

-the lack of communication between these two drove me absolutely crazy.

-I know they'd agreed to a sex only thing but apart from one drink together all they did was have sex,I just wanted a little bit more development between them.

Overall,I enjoyed this and the writing is on point as usual from this Author.

Jay Northcote's latest books were a little too fluffy for my tastes, so I really loved Pretty in Pink's extra tension and edginess.

I can see why this might be a polarising book. If you like your MCs to not have sex with other people, Johhny's behaviour might bother you. Honestly, I loved him and I don't believe he did something wrong. I'll explain later.

This book gets so many things right.

The sloppy start of a relationship. OMG relationships that start in college, especially queer ones, can be a complete an utter MESS! Especially those that include an almost closeted bisexual and an out and proud femme guy who only does hook ups.

Progression from fuck buddies to boyfriends. I felt that the transition from "lets meet only to have sex" to "I'm starting to care" to "hooking up with others lost its appeal" to "I only want you", came very naturally.

Exploring/coming to terms with one's bisexuality. I will never judge a character who is just coming to terms with his sexuality unless he does irrevocable damage. It matters not wether his background is supportive or not. Not in the world we live in. Ryan acted like an asshole several times, but he redeemed himself.

Consistent characterization. I think that Northcote did a very good job bringing these characters together without giving them a personality transplant. Spoilers ahead, it's your fault if you open the spoiler tags.

Kink! Three words...Pink lacy boyshorts! Also, Ryan is an arseman. He really, really is.

The resolution. Both guys had a lot of insecurities and personal stuff to work out. Johnny had been badly hurt by a boyfriend in the past and Ryan was still not comfortable with coming out. So instead of talking, they kept to themselves, unwilling to open up. I liked how it all played out.

College (queer) life. I loved this part and how all characters from previous books made an appearance.

Would I like more relationship? Definitely. I would have also liked more talk and less sex. But this whole story felt more like the beginning of a relationship and how Johhny and Riley had to fight with their own insecurities to be able to share parts of themselves. And the ending gave me all the reassurance that Johnny and Ryan are going to have a glorious HEA.

I know some of you have been waiting a while for Johnny and Ryan's story. Here it is at last!

I think this book is fairly typical of the series, so hopefully if you enjoyed the other Housemates books, you'll like this one too :)

The story:
The blurb says it all.

The positives:
- the sex scenes are incredibly hot and creative, and there are plenty of them!
- the main characters are portrayed with faults, doubts, fears, and missteps
- the secondary characters are great
- alternating viewpoint

The negatives:
- Ryan is conflicted and uncomfortable by his bisexuality, but his insecurity isn’t in synch with his confidence in the bedroom. I preferred the latter.
- Johnny has a subservient trait in his personality, not in the good sense. I can’t really get a grasp on it. My impression is that they aren’t/won’t be equals in the relationship.
- No romance development: Ryan and Johnny have insane chemistry, but barely talk, I just can’t see where the emotional connection comes from.
- No communication, no honesty.

Generally, I enjoy Jay Northcote's books. His books are usually a great blend of sweet and sexy and while Pretty In Pink packed plenty of sexiness the sweetness was somewhat lacking.

The book starts off with a bang. Bi-curious Ryan spots Johnny right away at a party and is instantly attracted. He's always had a thing for blonde androgynous men and decides to go for it. Afterwards, things are left as a one night stand, but things change to "fuck buddies" when they become neighbors. Aaaand it just goes downhill from here for me.

Why? Here we go:

1. Aside from talking the first night, they hooked up; these two don't have any get to know each other conversations. They meet up and have sex, and that's it. Aside from chemistry in the sack, I didn't get any connection between them. There was zero relationship development.

2. The lack of communication. I LOATHE when the ENTIRE plot of the book is based on characters not talking. It drives me nuts.

3. Then the broken cardinal romance rule that was broken.

This next part is a big spoiler so read at your own risk, and keep in mind this is a personal opinion/preference.

4. I'm going to mention lack of communication again because it pissed me off this much.

I wish this series hadn't ended on such a sour note and I hate to give JN such a low rating, but there wasn't much that I liked about this book. I'm sorry.

1.5 Stars.

The first thing I want to say is that sleep is overrat-- *yawning* Ok it's not, and that's why now I'm sleepy and blaming Jay Northcote and my decision to start this story before bed!

The entire night I was in a constant battle of "ok I need to sleep now" versus "oh come on one more page? How long could it take?". It turns out it can take all night! I couldn't stop reading until I reached the last page and it's the first time I'm glad that a story I liked this much wasn't any longer as I was at least able to catch a couple hours of sleep before I had to get up again.

"Pretty in Pink" is book #6 in the "Housemates" series but it can be read as a complete standalone. Characters from previous book are present here but their stories never come in discussion and there is no drama from them. They are just supporting characters to the main couple so you would be able to follow the story just fine even if this is your first "Housemates" book.

I can't pick a favorite character as both Ryan and Johnny were amazing. Each had his issues but nothing too heavy. They started a casual arrangement that suited both of them, but in the end nothing went according to plan as they realised their hearts didn't want to follow the rules they had set early on.

One of the first rules they had settled on when they decided to begin a casual relationship was that they wouldn't be exclusive. Their feelings changed pretty quickly after that but neither wanted to renegotiate that point for fear of what the other might want. So, Johnny, in an effort to distance himself from Ryan once he realised he was in too deep, decided to make use of that rule. I don't think it was cheating and it didn't bother me, but that might not be the case for some readers. I didn't have an issue with it because there was no sneaking around, the scene was not on page and we got Johnny's thoughts about it and how he felt about doing it.

Their entire relationship progressed quickly but somehow it didn't feel rushed. They were pretty open about everything regarding their sex life, talking about fantasies and making them come true, discussing what they wanted and what they liked. Their problem with communication came into play only when it had to do about talking about their feelings.

The cover as you can see is amazing and the story is even more so! I think the guy in the cover is Johnny and that's more or less how I was picturing him. As for Ryan, he had a more indefinite image in my mind. A big, strong guy with a calmness to him who didn't talk a lot.

A casual relationship that turns into more is one of my favorite tropes, so I read a lot of those stories. This book just became one of my favorites! Usually, even though the arrangement is pretty clear from the start, the characters still spend time together just hanging out or doing stuff together in general and don't just limit their interaction in the bedroom as they had agreed on.

In this case though, the MCs actually stuck to what they had agreed on. They only met for sex. That was the only thing they did together. And that effort to stay detached is the reason I liked this story so much! Even with sticking to their arrangement, they still ended up developing feelings. The situation still got messy. And they still ended up together!

Highly recommended!

Last book in the series and I am so sad its over! I have loved every book in this series, they have all been four stars (the only reason they havent been five is because they are all such short books/novellas that could have had more) I could barely pick a favorite because I really did enjoy them all. This whole series has made me feel like I am in college again, the talk about living with roommates and studying just took me back it was fun to read. Definitely an enjoyable series and this one was really good too, this one was one of the longer books of the series but still could have easily used more pages, but still overall enjoyable.

Well, well, well, this was sticky. Most of Jay’s books are messy, in the best possible way, but this was double-sticky. Or triple-sticky? Let’s see, we have, lots of spunk, a bit of (emotional) goo and some controversial notions. Jumping right to the latter…what exactly is it that has some people’s panties in a twist? Sex with multiple partners. And no, it’s not a poly relationship.
I had better back up to the beginning…Ryan is out at the club celebrating a mates birthday when he spies a gorgeous someone across the room. He is instantly attracted to Johnny. Surprise of the night, he didn’t realize Johnny was a man. Which is a bit unsettling because Ryan has lived a heterosexual life until now. Although he’s put slightly off kilter, he doesn’t deny his initial reaction and pounces at the opportunity to open his mind (and body) to a night with the beautiful blond that pushes all his buttons. Johnny is…sex on legs. He has no qualms with Ryan’s experimentation and plans on giving him a night to remember. And remember he does. From a distance. They part ways and both assume it’s over. Until they become neighbors. There’s nothing like trying to forget something that continues to dangle in front of your face. They can’t deny or stem their raging attraction to one another. However, neither one is prepared to make any commitments. Which leads to….sex with other people. And normally, I’m not a fan. Cheating is a sure way to leave me with a foul book mouth. But…that doesn’t happen here. Promise.

What's to like: I was tickled pink that the gang is in full effect. I loved having them all return, even if some appearances were brief. One of my favorite things about a series with multiple couples is when they all check in. It’s comforting knowing they are all marvelous and happy. And still together! We know most of the secondary cast (bonus!) but the new faces were all wonderful. I was thrilled we had a chance to meet Ryan’s family. Can I just tell you how much I adored Johnny? Johnny embraces his beauty and doesn’t restrict himself to any boxes. Tight pants, lined eyes, and hidden lace are just a few of his finer points. Emotions run hot and the sex is hotter. Prepare for some fancy foot work, as they both put up a good fight. But rest assured, they figure things out. Luckily, the housemates aren’t known for keeping their opinions to themselves and butt in to everyone’s business. I just love them all to pieces but what really shines here is facing your greatest fears.

What's to love: I loved both of the guys but what I enjoyed most was the genuine progression of their relationship. A drunken evening drives them together in a sexy smash and starts a chain of events. It’s not easy, it’s not always pleasant, but it’s always real. Ryan is struggling with not only fresh self-awareness and acceptance but the fears that accompany his new path. Johnny puts on a good front but he’s secretly fighting his own internal war. He does most everything…and does it well. But the one thing he doesn’t do is love. His heart is his and his alone. Ryan threatens to shatter his walls and he’s scared. Fear shows itself in many ways. For Johnny, his feeble attempts to pretend he’s unaffected include shagging other men. Which of course hurts him and hurts Ryan. Igniting next link in the chain to clink into the picture…decisions. They both must decide what they want. Does Ryan want to declare to the world what his heart desires? Can Johnny admit he’s ready to let a very special someone into his fiercely guarded heart? Well, I can certainly tell you I’m glad I had the privilege of finding out.

Beware of: Uhh, sex with other people? But…it’s off page and it’s only importance is forcing feelings to be faced and freed. Prepare for some hardcore, in your face sexual discovery. Jay excels at opening Pandora’s box.

This book is for: Northcote fans and Housemate fans….as long as you are able to recognize the power of this couple lies with their hearts, not just their bodies. Ohh, and you might want to grab a fan, you’re gonna need one!

**almost forgot one teeny weeny sidenote: Jay if you're listening.....Pleeeeease stop letting the boys share toothbrushes!?! I cringe and ewwww every single time. :/

I really like Jay Northcote and have thoroughly enjoyed this series so far. (And I particularly loved the previous book!)
I am sorry to say that this latest instalment in the Housemates series didn't grab me as much as the books before.

This comes down mainly to the fact that I didn't feel the emotional connection between Johnny and Ryan (although they connected plenty in other ways *g* - and yes, the kink was a nice addition, but vastly underdeveloped) By the end of the book I know basically nothing about Johnny, apart that he works in Top Man and that he had a bad relationship before (and even that was skimmed over). There are marginally more details about Ryan, but all in all I would have been happy to exchange some sex scenes for more depth in characterization and a more intriguing plot - the makings for that are certainly there.

It is a pleasant enough book, but not my favourite in the series.

3.5 Stars!

Rounding up to 4 on this one, but I'll be honest, it's mostly because of the heat factor.

In truth there wasn't a lot of actual romance development. But I did start to see some feelings develop from their physical attraction the sex. I think.

And yeah, a conversation or two would have helped.

But I liked it.

4.5*

The toilet cubicle conversation absolutely made this book, it was genius and oh so very British (I've been there myself having this type of serious discussion so many times!)

Anyone who's been following my reviews for any length of time knows how much of a fan of this author I am and I have to say, Pretty in Pink was right up my street.

So why didn't this one get the full 5*? Mostly because of the miscommunication to be honest. Jay has such a deft hand with plotting and with crafting low angsty narratives that it surprised me when there was the big fuck up. Now, don't get me wrong, it absolutely made sense in the story, it's just one of my pet peeves is all!

However, having said that, the "putting it right" scene, as mentioned in my opening paragraph, more than made up for it!

This book is also steaming hot with a side order of light kink and some dirty talk and that was also seriously good. I completely believed Ryan's exploration of his attraction to Johnny and of his own bisexuality and awakening of a different side of his character.

The sex scenes were powerfully emotive, even when both guys thought they were only hooking up, and I loved reading them slowly get more entwined.

The ending and epilogue are ace and Garrett Leigh has once again produced a cover which perfectly captures an element of what's to be found inside.

This review, my rating and how I feel make no sense to me.

Really.

There was something about this book. I couldn't put it down. No really, I was reading at every second I could and most of those seconds were not made for reading time! I was captivated by it.

And I should not have been.

I don't think these two, aside from their first "date", had one single conversation about anything other than their next hook up time. I'm not kidding. There was like no getting to know you at all.

Makes you kind of wonder how I loved their relationship right? I mean, it wasn't really a relationship at all but somehow it was.

Because I feel like it was a relationship, where Johnny goes in this book to me was so wrong. But for some reason it didn't ruin the story for me or feel all that wrong even though my brain screamed wrong.

What the fuck? No really. I should have thrown the book out the window.

I didn't. I kept reading because I couldn't not read it and I really, really liked the book.

Makes no sense.

3.5 Stars.......

I’m a big fan of Jay Northcote and the Housemates series. I started reading this book and thought, “YES!” It was all working for me. The set-up: straight boy drools over androgynous beauty and goes for it. The sex: super hot...role play, manties, loss of cherries. The men agreed to keep it casual, no strings attached. Fine. As a reader, I know where this is headed.

What I didn’t expect was the lack of character development. How can these two men get attached after a few casual encounters when they both swear that’s all it is? Even in their private ruminating we are not privy to the idea that it’s anything more than hot, convenient sex. Until suddenly it’s not.

Enter miscommunication trope. Oh how I hate you! The lack of communication only served to further stifle character development or depth.

Sure, a truth blurted out of a drunken mouth served to fix everything between our lovers, but by then I was still annoyed at the damned trope. So yes, HEA for our previously straight man, now bisexual and his pretty femme lover.

I expected more, but got so much less. At least the sex was good, and this book started with a scorching hook up between the two.

🔥🔥🔥WARNING 🔥🔥🔥
Danger of spontaneous fires

This little novel is HOT. Whooey. Smokin'.

IMHO this one really borders the line between erotica and romance. I would need more character development to call it a solid romance. I was left wanting in that respect. I wanted so much more angst from both characters. So much more conflict and internal turmoil.

However, the Housemates series is a short, spicy collection of NA guys discovering their sexuality. In that respect, none of these books disappoint.

I like some of these books better than others, but it's a simple matter of taste. I appreciate the variety that the author brings us with each individual book in the series.

Lots of discovering, and new feelings, plus hot sexiness !
Some British students were having a party, when Ryan saw a beauty across the room, but upon a closer look, it's a man. A tall, pretty man that he can't look away from.

One thing led to another and androgynous Johnny, goes home with Chemistry major, Ryan. The first time M/M sex for Ryan was enlightening, and one night isn't enough. It took Johnny to make Ryan act on his hidden desires.

I liked Ryan's honesty with friends, but he kept Johnny from his folks. These two are terrific together,
and the sexy times are frequent and lively, intense, erotic, deep and sensual, dirty, messy and breathtaking.

Johnny is afraid to be hurt again, and Ryan is in new territory, but both are guilty of not communicating, and it becomes a mess.
A story of new life-changing discoveries, hope, and happiness. But, what about the pink undies?
ENJOY !

I typically enjoy JN but I feel as though this book was rushed. We don't really get to know the characters beside their hookup and I didn't really understand how they fell in love with the little information they had about each other.

The lace panties scene was hot, that deserves a star of it's own.

This arrangement was only supposed to be about sex...

Remember Sid's flatmate, Johnny? The long blond hair guy with feminine look and black Kohl from previous book?

Yes! This is his story! And I've been dying to read his story since his appearance had stole my attention at Ben's birthday party.

I have special fond with feminine looking guy, and that's why I've been attract to him since his first appearance. So that's why I'm so excited when he finally has his own book.

It was hot and sexy reading and a bit emotional because I have this constant urge to slapped both Johnny and Ryan for being so 'stupid'. They NEED to learn how to communicate and didn't fall to their own false assumptions. Many says that they 'hate' Johnny for his stupidity, for letting Ryan "used' him like that, but IMO Johnny has his own reason and I want to hug him so many times. As for Ryan? I want to slapped him so many times for being so selfish and idiot!!
But I must admit that this miscommunication part was actually the best part that make this story emotional enough to read.

I think I must give the credit to Ewan, Sid & Ben for being there when both Ryan and Johnny need someone to help them cleared their mind.

Young, fresh and hot. That's what I like from Jay Northcote's, The Housemates series. If a series can be so addictive, this series is one of it!

Even it's said that this book can be read as stand alone because it has new characters, but still I suggest you to read ALL previous books in this series so you didn't missed and/or confused with the other housemates members that make their 'cameo' in this book like Ewan & Dev, Sid & Ben and Mac & Jez from the others book.

And I recommended ALL book in this series to read!

Warning : this book come with D.R.I.P warning (Don't Read in Public) caused by sexy guyliner with tight skinny jeans & boots, sexy pink lacey panties and the MC's that have this bum-fetish like ME!

'Pretty in Pink' started off great, but then just sort of fizzled out.

I liked both Ryan and Johnny. Ryan may struggle with his new-found bisexuality, but he treats Johnny with respect and doesn't try to suppress his feelings.

Johnny is unapologetic about who he is and what he wants in life. He's out and proud, and refuses to let anyone bring him down. I was rooting for him from the start!

The two men are very different, but there's a connection that draws them together.

At first, the connection is purely physical. Jay Northcote really brought the heat in this book! From the first time the two hook up, they're hot, hot, hot.

I couldn't wait to watch Ryan and Johnny fall in love.

But unfortunately, that never really happened. Their interactions with each other are limited to them hooking up. And while readers are told that the Johnny and Ryan begin developing feelings for one another, I didn't get it. The relationship development is minimal.

And while I understand where both men were coming from, the lack of communication and hot-and-cold routine got old.

However, I did like the big finale. Considering that the two barely communicated throughout the book, it was nice to see them finally admit to each other what they wanted.

Overall, this was an okay read for me. The sex was hot, but I needed more romance/relationship development to really buy Ryan and Johnny as a long-term couple.

I have been thinking about this series a lot and what I found is I love the way Jay lays out each relationship and shows us the reader a new side of understanding.

Ryan’s awakening of his sexual orientation is a beautiful thing. He isn’t always confident (who I ask is?), he questions himself a lot. But here is what I love he still goes for it.

Johnny is so understanding (for the most part) he gets that not everyone knows exactly what they like right away. I liked that he didn’t put pressure on Ryan and that he does go with the flow. Maybe that is because he was hurt in the past. But it shaped who he is now and how he deals with situations.

I hate that they hurt because they didn’t communicate but that in the end they worked it out.

I truly love, love and this is just another reason to fall in love with more characters.

Hamish Long is top NOTCH! I love his voice so freaking much. More Hamish please.

I quite enjoyed it!

One of my favorites in the housemate series, real and messy and frustrating in a good way. Made me want to revisit the other couples’ stories too.

I loved this series, they were low on the angst and sweet but not too sappy, it suits my current reading mood. I enjoyed all of them so I was looking forward to this book. Unfortunately, it didn't live up to my expectation. I didn't enjoy this one like how I enjoyed the previous books. I love possessive MCs so I was a bit bothered when Johnny slept with someone while his connection with Ryan was being built and I was expecting Ryan to do something but he stayed silent. But on the plus side there were plenty of steamy moments and they were HOT, I loved the mild medical kink! It was easy to read, as always, so it was still enjoyable.

I really liked the first bit. I liked the chemistry between Ryan and Johnny.

Things I didn't like:

-Johnny not wanting to be in a relationship because he was burned by love once in the past.
-I hated the doctor roleplaying scene, super squicky for me.
-The POV alternated with each chapter, except for chapters 15, 16 & 17, where the POV switched halfway through the chapter and I find it annoying when authors switch up the POV structure so late in a book.
-What we've got here is failure to communicate. Johnny and Ryan each assumed that the other just wanted something casual and were both to proud to actually discuss anything, which is always a terrible plot driver.
-Jay Northcote seems to love having all her MCs be verse. So, of course we get the declaration of feelings followed by bottoming for the first time. Which drives me nuts. Nothing says 'I love you' like taking a dick up the ass, apparently.
-I would have preferred if things had been more drawn out, as opposed to all happening within the span of two weeks.

I am always on board for a new Jay Northcote, especially a Housemates book. This one also features Johnny and I have craved his story since we met him. Unfortunately, this one fell short for me...even with the pink lace panties.

If you have read the other Housemates books, this one felt fairly consistent with the series...until it wasn't. It was super hot, no doubt, but there was a distinct lack of relationship exploration and a lack in sweetness between the MCs.
Don't get me wrong, neither one of these guys is bad. They are both nice guys, in their own way, and struggling with their intense attraction to each other. They handle it in different ways but where they mesh is in their lack of communication! Oh, the communication woes between these two! If they are ever going to make it they will need to open up and have some honest conversations! And maybe a date or two since they really only go on one semi-date. Most of the book is spent with them in bed having sex without much going on outside of that. When I say nothing much outside of that I mean it - come and run.
The story felt more like a lengthy one night stand (week-long stand), where it is bad form to talk about futures, desires, families, *feelings* or even have a lengthy snuggle rather than the start of a lasting relationship.
I love Jay's books and I am sad this one didn't work for me. I am hoping to catch more of these two and see them on solid ground in the future installments of this series. Or maybe a check in with them?

I like this series so much I pre ordered this book even though I knew it would be up on Kindle Unlimited.

Sadly, it wasn't my favorite in the series by a bit. While I liked Johnny's character a great deal, Ryan needs to grow more for me.

The romance is very insular and more about each hero's backstory and other relationships (though Johnny does have a great bestie) would have made this a richer read.

A solid enjoyable New Adult romance none the less.
