Is Jessica Wakefield losing her touch? Usually, she can wrap any guy around her little finger. But Devon Whitelaw, the sexy new guy in town, won't give her the time of day. Of course, his coldness makes him even more intriguing. Jessica swears she'll make him hers. In fact, she'll crush anybody who dares stand in her way...including her own twin!
When Devon becomes Elizabeth's new chemistry lab partner, she can't help but notice how good looking he is. Who wouldn't? Still, she only has eyes for her longtime boyfriend, Todd Wilkins. But the more time Elizabeth spends with Devon, the more impressed she is by his brilliant mind. In comparison, Todd seems...well, sort of ordinary. Will Todd be history when Devon goes after Elizabeth's heart?
Francine Paula Pascal was an American author best known for her Sweet Valley series of young adult novels. Sweet Valley High, the backbone of the collection, was made into a television series, which led to several spin-offs, including The Unicorn Club and Sweet Valley University. Although most of these books were published in the 1980s and 1990s, they remained so popular that several titles were re-released decades later.
I hate Devon - he’s a duck and I’m not just saying that because I know what happens in Jessica’s secret diary uni edition- but the books are so much more fun now. I honestly don’t know why anyone’s surprised Elizabeth’s cheating on Todd, she was like legit almost engaged to a prince in the last one. She’s literally cheated on Todd like a lot. But the lead up to earthquake is already epic and there’s some books I’ve never read before coming up
Technically i read a couple of pages yesterday and then continued today, so i TECHNICALLY began reading it the 7th and finished it the 8th, but that was only 3 to 4 pages the 7th but… Anywho —
I would actually like to give it a 3.72, but felt rather generous today. It landed on a very cliché cliffhanger hAhaA.
My aunt had a collection of books and told me i could take whatever i would like to read. There were a lot of children books and some classics — but then! She said it was some romances there (but my mom told me I couldn’t pick those, even though i sort of, kind of… did. However i have read much, MUCH more heavy NA romances… but… This was fluffy and for the age of 12 and up) and it intrigued me.
Sweet valley high, (which apparently almost everyone from my mom’s have read when they grew up) was just lying on the shelf collection dust. I found some of the books in the series, but they were just random books from the series. I found the nr. 138 - nr. 60 - nr. 13 etc, etc… I read this in one day. It’s a easy and a SURPRISINGLY fun ya book. For me, it didn’t have to be for the ages of 12 and up, but it varies from person to person.
OK. So the review. Ehm… It was fun, I really enjoyed it! I get why the people thinks these twins are interesting. I myself am a twin - well not an identical twin, but there were certain parts which i related to! And i like that. I consider myself like Elizabeth, (WHICH i really like in this book, hey! I would’ve gotten Todd and Devon!) my sister is definitely Jessica haha.
WOOOO! This is the first book i read in this series, kinda funny how it was also the last one hihihi… TOOODDDD!! If you don’t know, I AM IN LOVE WITH TODD HEWITT!!! Not this Todd in this book, but the one in chaos walking!!! So if i see anyone with the name Todd - I am immediately interested, intrigued, whatever!
This Todd in this book was VERY SWEET! And i would NEVER cheat on him like Elizabeth! That’s the one thing we do not have in common. Devon?? I liked him. (IN THE BEGINNING) HE LITERALLY SAID: FORGET YOUR BOYFRIEND - YOU AND I ARE MEANT FOR EACH OTHER, DO NOT THINK OF OTHER PEOPLES FEELINGS, YOU ARE THE ONLY ONE WHO MATTER. CHOSE ME. Blah blah blah… ANNOYING!
In conclusion: I liked it, will probably try to find the next books in this trilogy on my kindle, don’t think i need to have them in… like… physical copies hehe.
(I found a typo once, got very excited that i found my first typo in a book lol.)
I loved this series growing up. Returning to it as an adult is like checking in on old friends, and I enjoy the characters and the closed little universe of it. The plots can be hit or miss, and in general I prefer the adventure/horror ones-- you know, the ones that could never in a million years happen to an actual person. Not that this in any way resembles real life, and it concerns me a little how much I thought it did as a kid. These are less like high school students than fully formed adults running around, scheming, and creating problems for each other, but I think that's part of the appeal. Actual high school is pretty much a drag.
The author does a nice job setting Devon up as the sexy, mysterious outsider. While we fully expect him to fall for Jessica (and so does Jessica), it turns out he has more chemistry with his lab partner, Elizabeth. I don't remember if I had a preference as a kid in this Elizabeth/Todd/Devon/Jessica love square, but I don't have one now. Elizabeth tends to be set up as the innocent angel opposite Jessica's deviousness, but she's just as jealous and manipulative as her sister. Meanwhile, Devon is trying to steal someone else's girlfriend. My overall feeling was that they're all pretty terrible people, and they deserve what they get. Their drama is a little much for me as an adult, but it's a fun break from my heavier reading.
I review regularly at brightbeautifulthings.tumblr.com.
Bunny boiler Jess is back trying desperately to get new boy at SVH Devon Whitelaw (one of my favourite characters) to notice her - like every guy she's met he's the cutest guy she's ever seen, but of course, he only has eyes for Liz which causes jealous harpy Jess to put in an appearance! Naturally it doesn't take long for Liz to cheat on Todd yet again. Liz and Jess really annoy me at times in these books - how they even ended up with friends and boyfriends is beyond me.
This Sweet Valley High book really disappointed me. The characters are going out of character somehow and just don't seem like how they did at the start. The series is getting really disappointing.
